Hey guys,
Late last year I began experiencing the well known Captivate shutdown problem, this happened before the official acknowledgement from Samsung and AT&T. They replaced my device at my local 'AT&T Device Support Center' with little to no questions asked. My phone was stable thereafter throughout the month of December, and towards the middle of January. Since my phone was without a doubt stable, I decided to flash my rom from stock to <insert rom name here>. Several days after, I started experiencing the shutdown issue again, though less frequent than before (once or twice a week).
So I figured I'd try recalibrating my battery after reading through the various posts on these forums about improving battery life. This helped tremendously with battery efficiency, but the device would still randomly shutdown. I began to notice that the device would shutdown around a certain percentage (31-35%).
I returned to the device support center to have my phone exchanged again, but this time I spoke to someone who had experience with this matter. They told me that the device I currently have, and the one I had previously both were not affected by the shutdown defect. However they DID tell me that I've had the same battery the entire time. The replacements don't come with a new battery, they just use the battery from your former device.
They ended up replacing my battery, and I've had no issues the past week with much better battery performance.
So my thoughts coming out of this:
1. Be aware of potential battery issues caused by flashing roms.
- I think that over time, if you don't take care of your battery by doing some of the calibration techniques, you'll see terrible battery life, and quite possibly run into the same problem I did.
2. The AT&T Device Support Center will help you (at location, by phone or online).
3. If you flash your rom, it's probably a good practice to charge to full with the device OFF, wipe the battery stats in clockwork recovery, then flash your rom.
Good luck, and I hope this helps some of you with this issue.
I had a stock Captivate that was having the random shutdown issue. Maybe a few times a week. Still, it was annoying.
I called AT&T, explained my problem. They offered to replace the phone or the battery. I didn't want a refurb as my phone was less than 2 months old, so I opted for a new battery.
Since then, I have not had a single shutdown (knock on wood). So, I agree, that it's possible the battery is the culprit, not just the handset range.
AT&T is pretty good in this regard.
1. Phone swap 1
2. New battery shipped
3. Phone swap 2
4. Phone swap 3 (at this point they said if this too didn't work, they'd let me pick another device)
Just wanted to update.. I've had my new battery now for almost 3 weeks, and just today I experienced 2 shutdowns while the device was at about 50% battery life.
Going to return to the device support center again, and hopefully try to convince them to replace it with a HTC Inspire 4G.
This is BS
I just tried this am after my 2nd replacement in a week was bad out of the box.
Inspire is not available at the warranty center yet. The best android for replacement is still the captiFAIL.
I reluctantly accepted another one. I'm sure it will fail sooner our later.
Ugh... how many devices do we have to go through until the situation is made right?
does anyone elses battery smell like pickles?
My first Cappy was bought brand new from AT&T Feb 4th. It showed it was mfgr'd Dec 19, 2010. It began shutting off almost immediately.
The following Monday, I went to ATT and they replaced it with another new one. I haven't had the problem again - The new phone was built sometime around 1/27/11 so I'm hoping that they've finally fixed the issue from showing up in the future....
I was in the ATT corp store last night buying an Inspire, and the guy told me they were not replacing Captivates...sigh..im going to call customer service to try to get a replacement. My Captivate was from release date and did not start experiencing the shutdowns until December..it is usually at a high battery percentage and when the phone is cold..like if i leave it on a glass table it will 100% shutdown during sleep with the battery above 80%

Yeah mine is shutting down around the 50% battery life range.. before they replaced my battery it was shutting down in the 30-somethings. Haven't returned to the device support center yet for a replacement.
Mine started shutting down last night. Had it connected to a PC charging and the next day I put it in my pocket, and my later went for it and saw it was off. It shut down a second time tonight and when it came on battery was at 69%.
Issue started only after flashing a rom, then ODIN'n it back to stock since the battery life was very bad with the rom flash and after battery calibrating. Had been fine since purchased in November. Not what I needed after the day I had.

Mine does it randomly. I had it since April 20, and it has shutdown 3 or 4 times. Still don't know the cause of it.

Funny no one is stating their OS they are running?
The only time my phone randomly SHUT DOWN was running the leaked Gingerbread rom from LG. Stock was fine as were CM7.
Of all the roms I've tried, I've never had reboot problems or finding the phone off outside of the leaked GB.
This happened to me all the time with the stock FroYo ROM. I think it is caused when the phone runs out of free RAM (due to playing a game or running lots of widgets) I flashed CM7 with the ext4 Trinity maxmem firmware and it fixed all of these types of problems. Also, the stock battery seems to have major issues because when I replaced the battery with a third party one it fixed lots of problems with battery life and also the HDMI instantly drain the battery.
I still believe it could be a combo of questionable batteries and chargers. Purchased two the first week out. Mine started the reboot dance the first night. My wifes phone has had zero issues as has my replacement.
Probable fix
Hello,
So we’ve been working on this issue for quite a while. And have come up with a semi-practical solution. This might interest some of you, who have this issue.
Issue:
Both I and my friend opted out to purchase the new and wonderful LG g2x phone. After receiving the phones we came against a very similar issue. The cellphone unit would shutdown/turnoff during the charge [car or wall]. The shutdown would occur around 95% of battery charge. In addition the phone would get hot. After the shutdown to start the phone would require pulling the battery out of the unit and reconnecting it again, otherwise known as: Perform a battery pull.
Trials:
So after doing some research and funding out that LG is literally doing nothing about this issue, [great testament to their corporate integrity] we decided to take on this issue. At first we also believed that it is, indeed, the battery that gets heated and goes offline after reaching some temperature. After recognizing the poor quality of the battery, I’ve decided to purchase a better quality one online. No surprise really the phone would still lockup at 95% charge.
At this point I took it upon myself to resolve this issue with what resources I have available. I am an MIT student and have a high tech engineering lab available at my disposal, in addition to some free time with a winter break and all. Anyways, I pulled the phone apart and this is what I’ve discovered…
Discovery:
So inside the phone right next to the 4 connecting diodes that connect the battery to the cellphone unit are 2 semis [semiconductor hubs] that are responsible for providing battery charge information to the cellphones cpu [central processing unit] in addition theres also a line running to those semis that probably carries some sort of information [current] that the semis are also responsible for.
The first approach that we took was through the hardware, and killed that additional line and allowed the semis to only be responsible for the battery charge. The results were somewhat positive. Although the phone would freeze and glitch like crazy it would not shutdown with a subsequent necessity of pulling the battery.
We also noticed that it was the two semis that would get hot actually and lockup shutting the phone up and requiring a battery pull. The reason you need to pull the battery is because the iodes would overheat and completely glitch out, also even though the phone was now powered off there still was a current running between the battery and the phone. Only the battery pull would allow the diodes to drop the charge and reset to the position for the phone to be functional again and able to power up.
Solution:
So the idea was to find a software solution, which would free up this one line running into semis and allow them only to carry the responsibility for reporting the battery charge to the cpu. Believe it or not the first thing that came to my mind was the solution.
The app called Advance Task Killer (ATK) [available free on the market] proved to be useful. I do understand that this program is not very effective and only kills running progs in the foreground. However, that single line is also not very important to information transfer and becomes useless after you clear the cellphone’s foreground information transfer.
Basically when you run atk the line becomes inactive and you can charge the phone without any lockups. I’ve been doing that for about 10 days now. Discharging the battery to about 17% and charging it all the way up again and the phone has not yet turned off once and required a battery pull, nor has it been getting hot.
The idea is to clear the line prior to putting the phone on charge [car or wall]. So what you do is run atk few times [twice at least] then plug the phone in. this worked for both me and my boi here @ mit. After a week plus of testing we decided to release this onto the public.
We both a running stock lg g2x gingerbreads and have not tested it on any other roms, however, I suspect that it will have a similar effect on more leaner and cleaner roms like CS7.
Hope this helps those who are still struggling with this issue.
P.S.
In addition I would like to add that we did pull the battery apart in the lab and found that the stock battery was complete SHAYT! Some of the cells were cracked and overall it was just poorly manufactures. Cracked cells inside the power unit diminish its capacity to carry charge by a factor razed to n^power. Also may cause the battery to heat up during the final stages of its charge process [around 95%] due to the fact that to go the last 5% it will require higher resistance also in n^power. I suspect that in this great economy LG is cutting corners whatever place it can so there’s prolly very minimal quality control in power unit production. To those who think that they lose charge too quickly, that the battery gets too hot during charges, and possibly causing the phone to lock up: If you are using the stock battery, you may want to consider replacing it.
P.P.S.
Overall it is a hardware issue, in our opinion, that could be fixed with the use of the software, by rendering that extra line inactive for example. However, I would like to NOT compliment LG as a corporation and organization in general on their moral standing and responsibility that they carry to their customer base by doing completely nothing about this issue!
Thank You LG, I am no longer your customer.

Mine used to only shut down during phone calls. This only happened about 4 or 5 times and it got very annoying but eventually it just stopped and hasn't happened since.

I had my phone reboot during calls a few times a day after I got it. I OC'd my phone with Setcpu and was running Juicedefender. Ever since I clocked it back down and uninstalled those two apps (mind you I just got rid of them without doing any research if it was a problem really either of them cause). I'm going to get replacement batteries soon in hopes to help but it's good know a technique finally so my phone wont crap out during the night.
Seperate story kinda, I once put my phone on the charger. I placed the phone on my bed but with proper air circulation. It sat there for an hour or so. I walked over to use it and the thing was extremely hot. I pulled the battery and checked the phone. The battery was hotter then the phone so you could tell it was the thing over heating and not the phone. I put the battery back in the phone and booted and went straight to spare part's battery stats. It said the battery was overheating. So I pulled the battery and held it and the phone in front of a fan. 5 minutes later it was running cooler then any other time I looked at the battery readings (about 28c) and my phone charged fine for the rest of the night. Also yes when it did over heat the phone wouldn't turn on the first time I got to it.

i need your help in deciding if something is wrong with my sensation 4g or is it something else i am doing. the main issue is that battery life sucks. the first sensation i got also had the similar issue, and i exchanged it for the new one. but i have the same issue. i have went thru at least four cycle of draining the battery and then charging it up. also did the battery calibration. i haven't rooted the phone. just using go launcher ex instead of sense in hope of getting more battery life. so, now my question is is it just my bad luck with sensation? should i try one more time in exchanging device with t-mobile or should i go with HTC service?
will appreciate any help.
this is a detailed log of today's observation.

It is easily one of the two... Try factory reseting the phone if that has no effect, id just return for a replacement
You could also s-off your phone and look into some of the roms in your region, could also be helpful :|
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1112
With my phone personally...if i charge phone to full at 5am..its full at 7am
(Currently using Stock Rom/Kernel used ADB to pause applications runs like a champ!)
Best of luck with your issue
thanks for your reply. but why it need factory reset? i got phone just a week ago. i have installed few apps like unblock me game, juice defender, battery calibration, volume control+
(underpower speaker is another issue). , google maps, go weahter, go laucher.
the phone i have is made in china and manufacturing date is 7/2011.
s-off phone will void warranty, so i will wait till warranty period is over.

seems to me that your getting pretty much the same use from your battery that i am. i had the htc desire prior to the sensation and to be honest the battery life is comparable. i was expecting the sensation to be better battery wise but but i guess duel core is desire on speed so will use more power sucks though, i just plug phone into charger every night. don't think changing the phone is gona help.....battery life on htc is just bad. maybe buy a backup/second battery.
i will be more than happy if i have to charge phone just once a day. it drains out by 3:00 pm, then it is a real issue. That too without any long calls. i am sure, if i talk for one hour, then battery will die on spot.
the usage of today is in fact much less than some busy day. i am inside my office so have used landline/ skype for calls. if i have to be outside my office, then it gonna be a problem.
on a side note, what good alternative to sensation is there with T-mobile USA? i have seen some amazing battery life with iphone 4g and motoroal defy. and my own blackberry could go on for two days without a need to charge.

I too have been very frustrated with battery drainage. But for me, it didn't get bad until after I flashed modified ROMs. And I am not ignorant to flashing ROMs and I have done everything I can to find out the battery problem (battery calibration, bump charging, proper RIL files etc). But I can not get more than 8 hours in a day for any ROM. And these ROMs proclaim to be better on battery usage.
When I was on stock, I was getting 24 hours with moderate usage.
The thing I do not understand is that some people brag about their good battery usage and others with the same ROM are getting bad drainage. There are so many variables to battery drainage that trying to understand the problem proves difficult.
So I am just as dumbfounded as you.

How often does the mail client poll for new mail?
Do you leave your wifi on all the time? And if you do is it always connected, or just on and sometimes connected? When its on but not connected it will scan for available connections very frequently causing drain.
How is the is the mobile service in the places where you spend most of your time? If you spend a lot of time in places where the reception is poor then anytime you have no service the phone will search for service causing drain.

I am next to router all the time . As for mobile signal I usually get 3 to 4 bars. Email client is push gmail client as my company is using Google business app. Even if I dnt use the phone, it drains about 5% battery. If I use moderatly then all bets are off.
Since I have a similar battery problem and have done hours and hours of research including testing various ROMs, I think the answer to this strange behaviour (some people with good battery life, some without) is indicated by TechRadar's Sensation review:
UPDATE: We've finally managed to get our hands on a new review model of the HTC Sensation, and the good news is the battery life is definitely improved.
It seems that a combination of data-hungry applications and a slightly dodgy model caused the odd readings from before, although we're not entirely convinced the above scenario isn't one power users will face, which is why we've left it in.
But in normal use, and by that we mean sending 42 texts, spending 49 mins on the phone, watching an hour and bit of video and using the music player constantly, plus a few minutes spent using GPS to track ourselves and browsing the internet for roughly 45 mins, the battery pretty much lasted the day, although it was often in the yellow zone come 11PM.
However, what was more impressive (and a relief) was the sleep state of the HTC Sensation. Where before the phone would get very hot and start spewing out battery life in our pocket for no reason, if you leave the phone locked up for around 10-15 minutes on our new model the power consumption dropped to almost nothing.

I was going to switch to get a replacement model today since I'm still within my "grace" period, but something strange happened yesterday.
After trying out loads of different custom ROMs which all made no improvement to my terrible battery life, on Saturday I went back to the stock ROM (although the 2.3.4 version which is not yet out in Ireland), and on Saturday I suddenly had decent battery life (i.e. lasted the whole day and more)! Saturday night, still planning to return my phone on Monday (today) I switched back to the 2.3.4 stock ROM and put S-ON back on for warranty purposes. Then Sunday and today I still have the acceptable battery life of 1 or more days with light usage!
So, still have to do more research.
But simple answer:
Just get a replacement and hope you get a "working" model; otherwise, ask for a SGSII.
well, this is my second one. and i also have the same observation, after upgrade to 2.3.4 , battery life seems to have improved (OR is it just a perception? ). I have got much talked about anker battery, and just put it in. let it go thru couple of charge-discharge cycle, and then i will comment.

i have been using anker battery for last few days. looks good so far, it lasts a day. It works great with wifi, but using data on 4g (TMOUS) drains it a lot faster.
I have an Infuse that I got a little over two years ago. It started out with Froyo and I installed the official Gingerbread update after using the phone for a while. Long story short, I will need to keep it for a while yet so I can't just upgrade through my carrier (AT&T).
Here's my problem. A few months ago, I very abruptly had a battery problem. One day I had a normal recharge/discharge cycle in terms of how long the battery lasted (usually around 60% remaining when I plugged it in at night), and the next day the entire battery was drained in less than 14 hours. I typically leave it plugged in at work now, whereas before I could go for almost two days without needing to charge. Nothing changed in how much I used it. I had not installed any new programs.
I want to try to fix this phone before forking over money for a new one. Does anyone have an idea of what is going on here? Looking at my battery usage stats, "cell standby" seems to be in 1st or 2nd place for battery drain, depending on how much the screen has been on (with typical use for me, "display" is usually #1, but if I've not checked my messages or email much, that drops down to 2nd-4th place with cell standby at the top). I'm not sure if that info is of any help.
Someone told me recently that he had a similar problem with a (different) older phone, and someone had told him that some of the older technology in the towers was being phased out and the phone was draining its battery looking for a signal that wasn't as strong anymore due to there being fewer towers it could get a signal from. Is that true?
Thanks to whoever can give me any assistance. If you need more info please ask.

Lets rule out any obvious culprit by installing Wakelock Detector, and letting it run until the battery becomes low (then post the stats). There may be an app that stands out.
I have a similar issue with my current phone. It is sporadic, and I think it is a process within Android Services that came with Fly-On Mod (once a week I have bad battery but a reboot fixes it, only discovered it after installing Fly-On). Haven't bothered removing it yet because a latest ROM update seems imminent and I would rather wait for that if I'm wiping everything.
Mine went from lasting 15-18 hours to less than 10. And that's with babying it after the update because I was monitoring battery life
Yep, mine is messed up also. I have to charge it 2 times a day now where before 1 would give me plenty.
Yes, I have experienced this as well.
Its not just a Verizon thing my friend. I have read many people from different carriers complaining about that. I am with tmobile and it is really bad. Soon as I find the thread that has the way to get back to kitkat (and the time) its goodbye lollipop. Smh.
Agreed, my battery life is now atrocious. Even after a factory reset and adding apps one by one. If I get 6 hours I'm lucky.
I did a battery pull and cleared the cache. It seems to have fixed it
http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-138539/
Same problem here. I used to get close to 20 hours. Now I get 10-13 if I'm lucky. I have 2 batteries that I use now just to get a full 24 hours from the phone. I did a factory reset and cleared the cache and nothing changed. Maybe it will be fixed in the 5.1 update whenever that comes.

N915G here, rooted my phone, tweaked, tried diff ROM but still the worst bat life i had since my S3,Note2,Note3. Now downgraded to kitkat so far so good been using it just for 12hrs but i definitely can feel improvement specially in standby mode. I never thought of downgrading to Kitkat but now im loving it!

any updated resolution on this? my battery life is strange, not only do i lose power quickly, but once i'm under 40%, the phone randomly will shut itself off as if it reached 0%. i pull the battery and the SIM card, replace after 30 seconds, and then i get back to 19%. i ordered a new battery from Samsung directly (if you have any tips on cheaper batteries that still have NFC, please share) so i am going to see if that is the issue, but if not, then i will just switch back to my Note 4. i hate the lack of development for this phone, it seemed to be skipped over completely and then a straight shot to the S6/Note5.
As I just sent my Galaxy S7 back to Samsung for repairs, I had to break out my trusty red Nexus 5 again. I got it up and running with Oreo 8.1 in no time (thanks to the xda community, as always) and so far, it's holding up well for a four-and-a-half year smartphone. Only the issue why I originally replaced it still annoys me, and that's the battery.
Whenever the phone is sitting around, it barely uses any battery - it can be sitting around for over one hour, WiFi and BT on, getting notifications etc., but the battery maybe loses one percent. If I have a phone call, I maybe lose 1% every 5 minutes or so - that's still fine by me. However, as soon as I am "using" the phone and keeping the display on to read emails, text, or browse the web, the battery plummets and I can use up 10% in 10 minutes.
It almost seems like there is a hardware issue with my display causing the extreme power usage. I am on my fourth battery - the first one was replaced with one from ebay (said "original, but you never know) when it didn't last over a day anymore, that improved it for two months or so before it degraded again. Then I decided to spend 40€ on a genuine one directly ordered from LG's spare parts site, but that also only held up for four months or so - and now I'm using a battery from ebay again which has been used for maybe a month (and then sitting around, being charged occasionally), but I struggle to make it until 6 pm without recharging.
Do you have any idea what could be wrong with my phone? Could it actually be an issue with the display itself?
Thanks!
Could be the ROM that is causing the battery drain. Maybe try it on a stock ROM?
