Can't Seem To Root My Captivate - Captivate General

Hey guys. I flashed to I897UCJI6 (leaked 2.2) using ODIN with no problem. It didn't require root to work so I didnt root. Now I want to go back and root to remove the AT&T bloatware, but I can't seem to root.
I tried the One-Click version but it didn't reboot my phone as it indicated it should. So I decided to do it manually.
I renamed the root file to update.zip and placed it in the main directory, turned off the phone and rebooted into recovery mode. When I went to reinstall packages however it says:
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
Any ideas?

That is due to 2.2 not allowing unsigned files. There are a few threads about it. Do a search for rooting 2.2 and it will lead you to,what you want to know

You're exactly right. I'm using 3e instead of 2e. What's the best way to revert back to 2e? This kernal flashing stuff seems tricky.

I thought of using the CF-Root but my build is FROYO.UCJI6 and apparently I need to have either JPH, JPM, JPK, JP6. So I can't use it?

Have a look here. I found it by searching what I suggested you search for

In all honesty unless you love the leaked 2.2 I would just go the route of flashing a rom. I remember 2e is a bear to root correctly. It will probably end up being as much research/time to root it as to install a rom

[Q] Can't chown/mod /system/bin

i have a samsung intercept and whenever i try to flash a rom i get this error
"E:Can't chown/mod /system/bin (no such file or directory) E:Failure at line 7: set_perm_recursive 0 2000 0755 0755 SYSTEM:bin Error applying update!"
what's causing this error and is there a way to fix it?
Have you rooted your phone? Is it running stock firmware or a custom ROM? What kind of update are you trying to apply? These details are important and can help one of us solve the problem 9 times out of 10.
I need to know these things before I can give you a definitive answer. If you've modified the firmware in ANY way, chances are you'll need to reflash with a stock firmware to apply that update.
Right, sorry. I have stock everything now. I had inxanes kernel installed but I started to get audio popping so I went back to stock. I've tried installing cherry kernel but it just gets stuck at the first samsung screen.
You're in luck. http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php/1691827-Intercept-free-stock-ROMs-and-apps! that URL contains links to the ROMs plus directions for flashing them. I would use the SWUpgrade ones. Download the one that has both the ROM and recovery.
well the only one that i see that has both the rom and recovery is for sprint and i'm on VM. i will download the stock vm tar and try flashing it through swupgrade.
which custom rom would you recommend for the intercept? when i first had my phone rooted and everything i installed basicROM, but i would always get lots of force closes on apps.
well, the swupgrade doesn't work... i guess. whenever i go to flash it with swupgrade my phone just boots up normally and the patcher just stays at 0%. is it doing this because i already have the stock rom?
so i tried installing inxane's kernel and then installing the stock rom through the custom recovery that's installed. got the kernel installed no problem, but i still get the error in the OP whenever i try to install the stock rom zip i have. i restored my system backup that i have so i am back on the stock kernel and stock rom. i still have the boot image from when i had basicROM installed, but it says everything is stock in the about phone.
Power button should be the last one you press. Hold down the other 2 until it boots into recovery.

yes, i know. i get into the recovery/flash menu fine (vol down + cam + power), but whenever i plug in the usb and press start for the flashing on swupgrade, my phone just boots up normally from that screen. sorry for the confusion.
I'm downloading the firmware now. Ill post results. You may have to flash with odin
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
According to some users you need to uninstall and reinstall swupgrade then copy the .tar files from your archive into your swupgrade/models/binary folder. Then boot into recovery again and flash.

Can't install any custom roms any longer

I am lost.
I had FireFly 2.05 on my SGS (ATT US version) and was going to update to 2.1. I followed the procedure as I aways do; ODIN 1 click to stock rom, master clear, copy update.zip and rom file and reboot into recovery. This time however I get the following error
E:Can't symlink /system/xbin/su SYSTEM:bin/su
E:Failure at line 14
I checked some notes on this and found out that it might be a currupt file. So I re-downloaded FireFly2.1 again and transfered the file to the internal SD card. The outcome was the same.
Then I copied the original 2.05 version back which I know was fine and I still get the same error. Even after a full stock 1-click and master clear the above error will not go away.
Is my internal SD card messed up? Or am I missing something else?
It's running stock right now and all seems to work fine, but I cannot stand all the bloatware and other crap ATT puts on the phone and really want to try FireFly2.1.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Did you flash clockwork recovery
Did you root the phone after you flashed back to stock?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Agree with DaveyBB - sounds like you are not rooted.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You do not need to root on stock just flash clockwork with update zip
The update.zip i use is the current clockwork recovery.
I boot into the stock e2 recovery, then apply cw recovery and update the rom. Never had to root stock before when i update via cw recovery.
I will try to root stock first this time and then apply rom via recovery.
Thx

To install clockwork select reinstall packages twice
The issue is not with cw recovery. I am already in it, but the error that i get is after i click "yes apply this zip"... The script starts to format the system, data, datadata, etc. And then this error shows up after files ate copied

Have you tried re download of rom package?
My only guess is that clockwork and the rom are not working well. I would try downloading a different clockwork

Done that too.
So just to reiterate...
I had FireFly2.05 running and many other cooked Android 2.1 and 2.2 roms before this. I follow the instrution of the cooks to the 't' on how to update to the newest rom and never had any issue.
This time I downloaded FireFly2.1 and also Phoenix4.5 from the respective cooks and followed the instructions as usual. The issues does not show up until the 'copy files' part of the script is running (formating of the filesystem already passed).
All I can imagine are these:
1) The transfer from the PC to the Phone is corrupt (ruled out the download from the net as even the existing FireFly2.05 rom no longer loads)
2) The internal SD card is messes up
3) There is some configuration change I am not aware off that prevents the install of the cooked rom.
Maybe try to reformat sd through clockwork
Problem solved, kind of.
My desktop PC, which I always use to transfer the files is somehow responsible for the error I get in CWM recovery. I ended up using my laptop to transfer the ROM to the phone and it worked again.
Something is messing up the USB transfer? That seems very odd but I am glad it's not the phone that caused the issue.
If I find out what the issue is with my Desktop I will post again just in case this rather rare issue might happen to someone else.

One Question:
What method are you using to enter recovery method when you attempt to flash the rom? And what color is your recovery menu (should be green)?
(Don't go into recovery via rom manager. Try entering recovery via your advanced power menu)

I don't think he's getting into Clockwork via ROM Manager, as he's said multiple times he's using the CWM update.zip; reinstalling packages in 2e recovery to get to CWM.
He's also said he doesn't believe this to be an issue with Clockwork (and I don't either). And I'm also pretty sure we're not dealing with newbie mistakes of Android Recovery vs. Clockwork Recovery.
any chance you're leaving your usb plugged into your cappy while you're trying to flash it?

CWM won't install..

Ok, my infuse is rooted and have done GTG, odin back to stock (at different times when CWM wouldn't install)...with root and without. I have successfully rooted and had superuser install with su# updated.
Have download CWM from the market and flashed the recovery with no luck. Download the file from XDA links and put on root of sd card, with renamed "update.zip", entered 3e recovery and reinstall packages...with the following error:
E:Failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted
Yes I have tried to download it again from different source in case of bad download...
Are their any other ways to install CWM......? at a lose cause my other Infuse worked on the first try of everything....
Sorry forgot to add the (Q) didn't see it....

if you get no where,
I would do a factory reset when you are running the stock ROM under /settings/privacy/reset
Then I would try the heimdall package adam outler made.

What worked for me after Odin to stock was using SGS to flash the voodoo community kernel from froyo after that it allowed red CWM to work flawlessly and then I could flash ROMs again without issue.
Just a follow up to who ever would run into my problem:
I did return to stock using Odin and could never get CWM to flash using the app from market nor putting it on the root of the SD card. I tried GTG back to stock...with no luck getting CWM either....nor could I get Heimdall to work.
So I was able to use SGS kernel flash from the market to flash the "community kernel v8"... and get CWM.....so I don't why nothing else but the SGS flasher worked.....but I got it!!
Thanks for all the input and help fellows!
Wookspy important having the same problem i just got my infuse today i rooted and 3e recovery is installed i just keep getting the verification error when installing packages all you did was flash the kernel and it worked ?
Sorry i keep getting the errors when reinstalling packages for cwm any help would be much appreciated

[Q] error message with clockworkmod and 3e recovery install

so i poked around on the infuse 4g forums, and didn't find much relating to clockworkmod, sooo i apologize if this is repeating another thread
i have a few questions about a rooted samsung infuse 4g on at&t. i am very new to this. my phone had been having random shutdown issues, and was reverting app settings to the initial settings. i'm hoping a root can help with this.
i installed clockworkmod recovery on the device (which requires 3e recovery as well).
after placing the files in the directed spots, and while booting into recovery and selecting "reinstall packages", i got the error message "E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted." for both recovery installs.
both were in the proper place and all, i'd triple checked everything. i attempted to "backup current rom" using rom manager and got the same message. the backup file was never created.
2nd question:
if i can't fix this, would it be a bad idea to forget it and flash a rom via odin instead? i assume (optimistically) that the problem is with the install and not the phone itself.
3rd question:
i've backed up all apps and info with titanium backup, do i need to backup my current rom? (firmware version 2.2.1 kernel version 2.6.32.9 no custom rom or anything, just rooted)
Did you install 3e or clockwork recovery first? I he the same happen to me because I flashed clockwork from rom manager before I got 3e recovery taken care of. If so, uninstall rom manager, install it again and flash clockwork recovery. It worked for me.

1. You might not want to back up anything with cwm. At least, I don't. Bad things happen when you try to restore them.
Rooting won't make a difference.
Back up your contacts and your apps only.
2. you can flash with odin or heimdall. if you go odin, use h8rift's.
3. just back up the apps. no need for froyo 2.2.1. gtg's and h8rift already created the orignal image
Great, then that's taken care of. Let me see if I'm understanding correctly; if I ever need to unroot, the stock rom will be available with h8rift? Therefore, no need to backup the current rom.
2. I will try that. Do you have a preference between odin and heimdall?
Before flashing and whatnot, would it be a good idea to uninstall 3e recovery, cwm recovery, or rom manager? or all 3? If I should uninstall rom manager, would a replacement app be useful and which one?
Read my post ...top to bottom.
got it. thanks
just rebooted into recovery using rom manager. i am still getting the same error message. how can i fix this? i did not see a solution in your article, nor did i see one in the forums for the infuse 4g.

Download sgs kernel flasher and flash entropys daily driver with it. There are multiple other threads with this problem resolved. Most of the old methods dont work if you just got your infuse and it came with 2.3.6 on it, but from what I've read(yes, even though I don't have the problem I found how to resolve it) the sgs kernel flasher is the way to go.
I would help more, but if you can't read enough to figure out the process, then maybe you shouldn't. Sorry, I'm just a bit bugged by this being reposted in more than 5 new threads very recently. I'm not trying to be a ****, but everybody just needs to take it slow and read. Most problems have been solved for the most part.

[Q] Soft Bricked for the past 3 hours... need phone. Help this N00B

Last week I successfully rooted, unlocked my bootloaded and loaded the touchwiz 4.1 ROM. Because the GPS wasn't working and some other fairly bothersome glitches I decided to flash a different ROM, wanted to try CM10. Unfortuneatly, I didn't "read carefully" and just jumped in, trying to replicate my past success by following similar steps. So I booted into recovery to wipe and begin anew.
I used the native recovery, which I've now seen was a bad idea and should have used CWM but I don't know how to install CWM now because I can't load the OS. I originally used Casual to root and help me install 4.1 touchwiz on my Verizon GS3. After factory reset I attempted to install CM10 from the SD card and got the below mentioned error. My phone is stuck. I can only access the native recovery or ODIN mode (I have a mac so I can't use ODIN and Heimdall doesn't seem to want to play nice. Please help!! I need my phone for... life. I'm happy going back to stock if I need to but I'd love to run CM10.

I'd say your best bet is to get all of the ODIN parts and see if a friend has a PC with windows on it you can use for a bit. I dont know of another way.
As far as I know, you will have to flash stock image back with Odin, I don't think anything is ready for the Mac yet. I will be glad when it is, I have 1 as well.
If you don't have any other options, use Boot Camp and Odin will work fine.
