Fun while it lasted - myTouch 4G General

Which wasn't long.
For the life of me I cannot get this phone to stay connected to 4g. I really don't want to have connection issues show up after my 30 day exchange.
Converted back to stock and exchanging for a Nexus.
Shame really, this phone is better than the Nexus, but only when it's working.

I'm going to hate myself for actually replying to this, but here goes...
so you exchanged a phone that was having trouble connecting to 4G with a phone that doesn't even have 4G? OK, have fun with that...

ever considered having the phone exchanged with another mt4g and having them set it up there?

just making sure by having problems staying connected to 4g do you mean keeping "H" service and it drops to "3G"

Did you ever consider that your phone could be defective? Try out another one before just giving up

At least you experienced 4G. I don't get 4G where I'm at. I'm currently at school and I don't even get 3G because I'm at bumblefuck.

1) so having a phone that cant connect past edge is somehow better than one that can because it says it can do 4g?
2) it wont stay on wcdma.
3) they were sold out of nexus s so I exchanged for a white mt4g and will give this one a go. If it doesnt play ball, its my last one. Im not going to join the ranks of "oh yeah im on my fifth mytouch 4g.."

To those of you who had to root using gfree, if you have trouble with 4g similar to what I've detailed, you might have a bad radio.
After exchange, with new white mytouch, I didn't need to use gfree. S=off stuck using root.sh and my antenna is running 4g strong.

When I'm back at home (philly), I usually get good connection. Around 4 Mbps. I just don't think that's a 4g speed. And I can't do anything about the speed when I'm at school.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App

Well, the second MyTouch 4g isn't lasting long. Now, when I get a lot of SMS at the same time as using Pandora, the phone restarts.
Also, light is leaking out of the bottom buttons. Pretty badly to the point where I can almost see the LED behind the buttons and the bottom left of the screen is glowing even though I have a TPU case.
The 4G problem still exists. I'm guessing it's a tower problem near my campus because it's always as soon as I get to school that the 4G just dies. So I might just leave T-Mobile.
When I had a MyTouch 3G, my connection was always strong. Sure it wasn't 4G, but I literally always had 3G in San Diego no matter where I went. I wouldn't lose 3G unless I started driving to Sacramento and once I got a hundred miles north of Los Angeles, it would drop to Edge. But in San Diego, Los Angeles, a few miles out of each city, Sacramento, Davis, Berkeley, San Fransisco, with the MyTouch 3G I always had 3G.
With this phone, I can't even be in my girlfriend's apartment (in the middle of San Diego) without losing 4G or at school.

The h you see in your status bar isn't always 4g sometimes its hdpsa or 3.5g.and as long as you see a 3 there is still a chance its 4g the only way to tell if your I'm 4g is to run a speed test.so as long as you still see 3g there is no need to complain

I'm not getting data! I don't care about the letter. It could be a 3, 3g, xyz or a smiley face for all I care. The problem is I have four full bars and the H symbol but data isn't working. It won't switch to edge unless I go into settings and change it to GSM only.
This is the second mytouch 4g doing this to me. It doesn't matter if I'm rooted or running custom or vanilla sense. It still has spotty data.

I am having the exact same issue with my MT4G. It'll show a data connection (E or H) and a strong signal, but it will do absolutely nothing. Nothing that relies on data works. And yes, I've already gotten a new SIM card, didn't fix the issue.
It goes back and forth between showing a strong connection to "limited service" and back.
This phone is going back, hopefully my replacement MT4G has the good screen and data that actually works.

[Q] Cell reception question

Can anyone tell me if the reception is any better on any of the custom roms out there. I am about to return my second phone so I dont want to go flashing a bunch of new roms just to take them off in a day or two. Im asking because if the reception is not any better I may have to get a different phone because I have no reception at all in my home area. Any advise??

bad phones
my first g2x had poor connection so bad i thought it was tmobile as i was coming from verizon. so i returned the phone. i dont have landbased internbet where i am living but the coverage map showed great 4g infact i can see the tower like 200 feet from my place. so i decided to try out the tmobile 4g hotspot figuring it wouldnt work well it did. so i went and got another g2x and this one has great signal and connection. so there are phones out there that have bad connection, so if you are getting this and you know another tmobile phone or device is working return it.
Awww this is a disappointing thread to find. I was hoping it would be a software problem thats easily fixable.
I get constant time outs on mine when browsing no matter where I am. Sometimes it will time out on a speed test 5 times in a row, them get 5Mb down and then time out 4 more times and then get 5Mb again. Its killing me. Worst thing is I bought it 2nd hand so I'm sure T-mobile will make me mail it to Samsung
edit: My reception is about -101 dBa on avg.
Was having the same problems. I call customer service and they informed me that my sim card was old and to go to the T-Mobile store and get a new one. I did and now works a lot better. They told me that there towers don't recognize older sim cards as 4g so they get spotty 4g coverage.

Nexus S 4G or keep my thunderbolt?

Hey everybody ive been thinkn bout switchn to the nexus s 4g, i currently have the thunderbolt for verizon. i know i have to switch to sprint and thats not a problem. the questions i have is should i take the plunge? hows sprints coverage? or should i just wait for the next nexus to come out? and can you all share your pros and cons of your device? thank you all in advance.
I dont have Sprint nor a Nexus s 4g, but I do have a Nexus s on T-Mobile. This is the best phone I've ever owned ... I haven't had any problems with it. Plus stock Android is amazing. I know HTC sense UI has it's pros and its cons but I take stock Android anyday.

Since I've never used a Thunderbolt, you'll have to take the following with a grain of salt. First, Verizon's coverage is much better than Sprint's coverage. Sprint's 'nationwide' coverage has next to no native coverage in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Nevada. Other areas are more sparse than Verizon as well. However, Sprint has free roaming with 3G speeds (assuming Verizon has 3G in that area). You won't get Sprint services like Sprint Navigation, TV, etc. while roaming (at least I don't think you do).
I had the nexus s 4g for about a month, but ultimately returned it. The only reason I returned it was that I did not have a signal at my workplace. My previous phones have all had pretty poor signal at my work, but the nexus was a just a little worse (enough that it wouldn't receive the majority of calls/text, whereas my older phones would get most of them). The coverage is bad there since it's basically a concrete block and I had no problems anywhere else with the nexus s. The minor things were creaky battery cover (probably just on mine and could have been fixed with a new cover) and no led notification light.
The things I liked were good battery life (even with poor signal at my work), standard google with no sprint branding at all, native hotspot feature works like google intended it to work, the size was really nice, amoled screen looked very good, and the phone was very fast in everything I did. It was also very easy to root and get superuser on (other than needing to move some of the tools in android sdk from 'platform-tools' to 'tools').
They're making a radio update. Should've waited.

The only thing you might miss is Verizons network. Me and mikeyinid both switched from the Thunderbolt and I can personally say it was the best decision I have made.

Look up the sprint map about coverage in the other hand I'll go with the nexus man stock android blows out of the water in speed , I had an evo (thunderbolt brother , practicly with a few updates ) LTE is great tho (where it works )
Ok so I had and Evo with CM7 stable but still some how had bugs , on nexus s I don't have any bugs and I don't even miss 720 p video recording , and I'm happy that I'm getting upsates straight from google , the evo got gingerbread 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 is out and I bet that's probably the last update for evo so not gtalk video chat ... btw I'm in las vegas and I switch from verizon to sprint cheaper service and in my already better service most of the time

Like mbh87 said, we both came to the NS4G from the Bolt, and while I do miss the awesome service, the Nexus makes it worth it. I have no regrets switching. If your running CM on your bolt then the switch is a no brainer Not to mention your gonna save money with sprint. Don't let them talk you into a big plan. The 69 + 10 dollar for wimax is unlimited mobile to mobile on any network... Very good deal.

hey, i was just wondering, do you have a link to that info? i haven't heard of anything about it, but would be awesome if they did.
to the op, verizon's always gonna have better general coverage than sprint, but if your area has good sprint coverage then it shouldnt really be a problem. also sprint is always gonna be generally cheaper than verizon (not to mention they'll give you a $125 bill credit if you port your verizon number over to the nexus before the end of this month).
As far as the nexus s 4g goes, man its smooth like butter the combination of hardware/software has given me almost zero lag in the UI. but your best bet is to just go test it out at the store.
and the nexus 3, shoot thats a tough call. i was gonna wait for it and not get the ns4g on contract, but im such a big fan of the nexus that im just gonna buy the nexus 3 outright when it comes out and sell this one or possibly keep both (i love it that much).

Well considering sprint has the largest voice coverage in the US, switching to Sprint isn't a bad way to go if you are looking for good voice coverage.
Verizon has better 3G coverage though, and better 4G coverage.
Overall, my only issue with the nexus s 4g (vs. my old evo) is the wifi antenna is not as good. While the bars jump around much more than the evo, I get similar performance/coverage.
If fast data speeds are very important to you, verizon is probably a better bet. If you just need data connection to grab emails, use google navigation, etc, sprint works great.

How to bypass/ignore a nearby ATT microcell?

I currently have an ATT Infuse running gingerbread infused 2.1 that gets near perfect 4g reception in my house. However, for whatever reason my downstairs ATT 3g microcell gives me 1-2 bars and blocks me from getting that 4g reception.
This problem has a been a real pain in the rear for me. My text messages never send the first try, pic txts r very unreliable, and calls tale forever to dial.
My parents refuse to get rid of this microcell because their iphones can't see the 4g reception nearby (ya and they dare to even call them iphone 4s, nice marketing technique apple) so I cannot turn this box off.
I've also noticed that only my family plan gets to see the microcell, I was wondering how to go about turning this thing on and off (for this phone only) without disrupting my parents' 3g experience.
Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like a family issue not an xda or at&t one. May I suggest move out?
:edit: On a serious note at&t 3g and 4g use the exact same towers and bands so I don't see how what you are saying is possible.
Wrong, in several cases did neither of my family's iphone 4s have any reception when my infuse had full 4g, learn more before you insult my intelligence again.

This is an easy fix buddy, The Mcell only works for phone that you add the number to authorized devices on the att.com website. Simply have your parents remove your number and you will no longer be able to access the mcell.

I am one of the people who have had a hard time getting good 4G service even though I'm in a. great 4G area. Today I noticed that if I reboot my phone in the area I wish to receive 4G service I get a super-fast 4G connection!
Now, that is great news but why can't my phone do this without a reboot? Does anyone know why this happens?
Have you tried simply turning airplane mode on/off rather than rebooting?
No, I didn't and thanks for the idea. But the phone should be able to do this on its own, right?
I have to toggle airplane mode when in a spotty 4g area. I hope a new radio will help with making a more seamless switch.

To be more specific (not sure if you know or are curious) a new radio hopefully will report greater signal for your respective area. New radios typically come with ota updates and users may notice greater data speeds and network signal.

Had the same problem too. I went to another city without 4G and came back home and tried to watch some YouTube. Noticed right away that YouTube was buffering. Initially thought that maybe Verizon was throttling me. My speed was from 0.5 to 3 Mbps max. Restarted phone and did speed test; speed went back up to 10 Mbps. That made me happy again.

Do you guys think Verizon will implement an ota update with a new radio, but also something to lock the bootloader back up?
Well we have some people who have posted the radio updates on the forums here, and I don't think they touch the bootloader (not 100% though), so assuming Verizon does push an OTA for new radios tied with a re-locked bootloader, it'd only be a matter of time before XDA figures out how to install only the radio update.

I bought 3 SGIII's and noticed right away that mine was not getting as good of 4g as my two daughters. Long story short, after 2 weeks I got an new phone with the updated VRALG. Was better but not great. Verizon Reps stated it was a known problem with som SGIII's.
Now I am running Synergy ROM and 4G is alot less problematic, even better than both my daughters most of the time. If I do have a problem I will cycle Airplane mode and it fixes it. My 2 cents
I feel like there's something wrong with my phone. The signal is week and I'm getting abysmal speeds. Like .2mb per sec downloading something. I'm also in a highly populated area where 4g seems to be strong here
Has it been like that since you got it?

If its really that bad. Its a hassle but it'll work...
Dial *#*#4626#*#* or download the "Phone Info" app shortcut, and it'll take you to the same area.
There you can select your radios, Dont mess with anything besides the drop down box with the preferred networks. Set to LTE Only, (defualt is LTE/CDMA/Evdo) when you are in LTE only mode, you should get pretty blazing fast internet. But your SMS/calling outbound and inbound wont work while this is activated.
As for an actual fix... You just need expirament with the different radios... On my Old bionic phone, i remember it was getting really spotty 4g, more than usual. A clean wipe seemed to alleviate the issue. I can't explain why it would it just did...

[Q] Samsung Infuse 4G At&t HSPA+ data working on T-mobile network.

Hey,
I was recently using my phone that i got a couple days ago ( Bought it unlocked at my local Electronics store ) and i popped in my T-mobile sim card and after 1 day I looked at my status bar, I had H+ on the top right corner. I tested it out on my browser ( I was at a park while this happened ) and the data worked fast like on a T-mobile 4g phone. But it later went away after a couple minutes. I was trying to take a picture with my other phone to prove that it wasnt photoshopped or anything but i was too late. Can someone help me on this situation? Is there a way i can keep it at HSPA+? Please don't take me as a cellular noob i repair phones and setup for plenty of people.
Thanks.

I will go back to the same neighborhood and check again. Also it happened while i was at the gym a couple hours before. Weird stuff.
Probably a bug, sometimes mine thinks it doesnt have a data connection when it actually does, or displays E (for edge) when its actually on 3g
If you catch it happening again do a speedtest - I doubt it will be 4G speeds
I would assume you were seeing an area where T-Mobile has 'refarmed' their HSPA+ network onto the 1900MHz band, which according to Samsung is possible with the hardware.:good:
Refarming makes a lot of sense. And I will definitely speed test it for sure.
