Does anybody know how to increase the mms size limit on the captivate? I'd like to increase it to at least 1MB
I don't know if that can be done.
When I attach a video/pic (Clearly over 1mb) it automaticly compresses it to send

I kno mikeymike moved the limit up to 600kb for the serendipity rom but I am not sure how he did it or how high is possible. Just letting you kno it can be done...
After some googling I came up with 600 kb being the highest AT&T can handle.
I set it higher than that (like 1mb) and things never got past "Sending...".

I'm was trying to send a video that's maybe 400kb, and it wouldn't go. I know I can download handcent or chomp and change the setting in there but I like the stock sms app and would like to keep that. 600kb is all they can handle if they recently changed their settings. Back in August I had a windows mobile device which I tweaked to allow over 1mb to be sent and it allowed me. My daughter is starting to walk and I took a small video to send my mom that is about 400kb and it won't go. MikeyMike, can you instruct me on how to increase mine or is it something highly involved. I tried doing it yesterday but after moving the new mms.apk in, it fc'd, so I had to go back to the original from the rom.
Thanks for your help.
Mms.apk\res\xml\mms_config.xml
Code:
<int name="maxMessageSize">614400</int>
That's 600kb.

I tried what MickeyMike suggested and it fc's after i put it back into system/app. I open the file from 7zip and edit it from within, then just save the file, that way i don't have to repackage.

You've got to decompile it with APK Manager.
Sent from my Captivate.

I tried a few of the ROMs here on my Tilt already. I noticed on a couple of them that the sending size for the MMS was set at the old 300Kb limit. I often send stuff that is right at the 600Kb limit and want to keep that limit.
I noticed on a few of the cooked ROMs the limit was 300Kb, and I couldn't figure out a way to change it, even going through configuration and settings.
So, my questions are as follows (and, yes I did search)-
Is there a way to change it that I'm just not seeing (short of maybe a regedit?)?
What ROM are you running, and what is your sending limit? (this is the one I came up with no answer at all for when searching)
Could this have to do with a particular MMS install .cab file? (similarly I didn't see an answer for this one. Lots of cab links, but no specs on the limit)
Thanks!
EDIT: Dangit, I put this in the wrong forum. I meant to put it in the Kaiser forum.

By "short of a regedit" do you mean you DON'T want to edit the registry? You may find a cab for ARCSoft or whatever MMS client you're using that has the larger sending size limit. But it would probably be quicker to just change it manually by editing the registry. Check this post for the Hermes, most likely it will work on the Kaiser also.

@over2land: I have been wondering about this also!
@hotmail: Thanks for your reply - I changed registry items per your post in the Hermes thread and now have 600 limit. I didn't find any registry keys with title of Wap1SendLimit_x - so I just changed the SendLimit keys, and also changed the ReceiveLimit keys, and Voila! good to go!

If regedit is the only way to do it, I'll do that. Right now I'm back on the ATT OE ROM and radio, since I'm on ATT, it works for me. I get the 600Kb limit. But, the cooked ROMs are typically faster and have more storage, so at some point I'll end up going back to a cooked ROM.
I was hoping that there was some setting going through the phone's UI that I could change. Even though I've regedited every phone I've had, I'm not 100% on regediting this one just yet.
I am using ARCsoft... I was hoping to avoid having to DL every .cab I can find for that limit. I was figuring if people posted their cabs or thier ROMs with the 600Kb limit, then someone like myself who didn't want to necessarily reg edit the phone would have some recourse.
I think I have a cab that's got the 600k mod in it. if you want it, let me know.

I'm guessing the 3mb limit does not apply to AT&T's network? Or do they support a 3mb file going out?

Not sure about ATT but I installed this cab and went into the MMS settings and changed the limit to 3mb but I've only sent out a 1mb file or so over the Tmobile network. Works good

is there any app or any way to make your mms space to be bigger? i tried sending ringtones and the biggest size it would let me send is like 236kb which was like 16 seconds of it sometimes it didn't even let me send 10 seconds.....
Bump..... Id like to know to
I belive it depends on the carrier. This MMS size restriction is set by the service provider and nothing in the phone can change it. Sad... but fact..
I know T_Mobile can send/receive files up to 300 in size
windows mobile u can adjust it to send up to 1.2m..... so it has to be possible with the g1
WM up to 1.2M?!?!
I had/has a dash with WM and since i have T-Mobile i could only hack it up to 300
What phone did/do you use?

Its possible I have a wing and dash. They both can send up to 1.2Mb by doing a regedit (registry edit).
So it may be the Android OS holding us back
Maybe i was thinking of receiving a file bigger then 300
I dont know my head hurts from following a few threads today.
Maybe it is Android that someone needs to explore.
well in my older phone that i had i sent one once that was 1.6mb it was a nokia 6133 so i think it is possible to make send a larger size but it doesnt let me
yep this is determined by the network so although the phone might support it doesnt mean the file will send over the network.
but i dont think it even goes to the network because when i try to attach it a pop up message comes up saying i cant send that file but if lets me send the same types of files if its 360kb or smaller
After updatng to the new rom, half of my ringtones stop working.
After a 1 hour conversation on the phone with HTC... I figured out that the ringtones that were working were under 300K. I then took the ringtones that were not working, and decreased their file size to under 300K and they started working again... ( I think the agent is taking credit for my discovery... - but who cares)
Anyway, looks like ATT decreased the 600 K limit to 300 K for custom ringtones...
Now to find a fix for it...
If you know how to edit the registry, here is the thing to edit.
Code:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds]
FileSizeLimit"="300000"
As you can see, it's set to 300k. Just change the "300000" to your desired limit.
http://mikefordmustang.com/downloads/NoRingtoneLimit.cab
enjoy.
Awesome! Thanks
300K, What are they thinking? Locking people into buying their ringtones, I guess.
Started the thread in case some others run into this, Issues can get lost in the longer threads.
The guys over at HTC were like, Wow, 300K.
Trying to see if this is possable....
What I would like to do, is make my WP7 device see my Data Connection as a Wi-Fi connection to download larger apps from the Marketplace when I am away from home or away from a wi-fi connection. Something that could be turned on and off.
Is this even possable ?
I hate the fact because I am on the road I can't buy a new App because of it's size, even tho I am on a full 5 bar 3G connection.....
Thoughts ?
My guess is that there is a throttling bit set in the registry for the Zune app for when not on wifi - I just can't seem to find it.
There's a value which appears to control this limit specified a file in \My Documents\Zune\PimentoCache\Keepers. The files there are downloaded to the phone based on your carrier and OEM, but they can be temporarily replaced (this is how my OEM Marketplace XAPs work).

Are you saying that what I am looking for IS possable ?
If so where do I get started with this ?
I'd love something that could go in the Settings menu to enable a 50mb limit or something, that I can turn off when I am done.
You'll need to interop unlock and/or root your phone so you can browse/edit the registry.

Now that this thread is back open.. I would like to see if it's possable to get to the bottom of this.
What my dream is here... A little app that is in the Settings that will allow you to change your settings to allow the limit to extend to 50-100mb for a short time. This will allow users to download a larger App from the marketplace.
One of my biggest hates on WP7 is when I am on the road (not at home or by a wi-fi network), I can not BUY a new app because of it's size limits.
Has anyone tried this ? And do you need root access on your device for an app to be able to change this setting (by just flipping a switch) ?
Thanks !
Check this thread for more details that might be useful.

I had the same issue and the solution to it is to edit the xml files LKG_MOConfig.xml and Downloaded_MOConfig.xml located at /My Documents/Zune/PimentoCache/Keepers. The download limit is set to 20 and can be edited to a higher value. I recently downloaded an 80 MB file through my 3G network. The only downside it seems is the files get replaced by the OS in every few days. To get round that I have made the files read-only and testing it. Will let you know how it goes.
And yes it will require a rooted or a fully unlocked phone.
Thanks to ken52787 for figuring out the files and his thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1602691
You don't need full unlock, just interop_unlock with a file browser.

I'd remove these files. These are only valid for T-Mobile and my guess is it'll cause some problems if someone tries to buy apps with them on another network.
If someone can't figure out how to edit the xml themselves and change a single number, they probably shouldn't be messing with this to begin with.
Can these be put in a XAP ?

Good point, had a brain fart & didn;'t think these files might be courier dependent, files removed...
Actually, I'd really appreciate it if multiple people (different carriers in particular, I already have the OEMs) posted their PimentoCache XML files. I'm working on an app that will allow people to easily switch their Marketplace settings (OEM, MO, max download size, etc.).
GDTD - Let me get these files off my Verizon Trophy and I will post so you can add to your xap. I'm off for work so it may not be until later today.
Here are the VZW files. I already edited them for 200MB download limit.

Hi there. About 5 days back I posted up a question over on the other forum section asking if there was any way to do this and never got any replies. I decided to go searching and found an awesome XDA user called tomascus who in the past has modified other device cameras and some of the Xperia Z range cameras to increase bitrates when recording. He was nice enough to modify the 4K camera APK for me and I wanted to share it with anyone else who has been looking for the same thing as I was. Remember to thank him if you see him around!
There are two files now three files.
The first is;
SuperVideoCamera-xxhdpi-release.apk
This is the file you want if all you need is the 4K bitrate increase. It's set to record [email protected] 80mbps.
To use it copy the file using a file explorer with root access to the
system/priv-app/SuperVideoCamera-xxhdpi-release folder and give it the permissions 644.
I would strongly suggest you rename the original rather than overwriting it or deleting it just in case something doesn't work or you want to go back to normal.
Clear the camera app's data/cache and restart then you should be good to go.
The second file is just a modified media-profiles.xml
You don't need this unless you also want to modify the bitrates of [email protected] and [email protected]
The APK above will change the 4K bitrate without needing this file.
You can use just this file on it's own and not the APK above if you don't want to change the 4K recording but want the increased 1080 and 720.
To use this one, copy the file to the system/etc folder and give it permissions 644 and reboot.
Again, I really think you should rename the original rather than overwriting it for the option of changing back.
I set the bitrates as;
[email protected]= 54mbps
[email protected]= 24mbps
These settings also apply to recordings taken using the Timeshift camera feature.
The third file is SemcCameraUI-generic-xxhdpi-release.apk
This one will modify just the [email protected] 60FPS bitrate up to 54mbps
To use it do the same as the first file and copy it using a file explorer with root access to the
system/priv-app/SemcCameraUI-generic-xxhdpi-release folder and give it the permissions 644.
Rename the original rather than overwriting it or deleting it just in case something doesn't work or you want to go back to normal.
Clear the camera app's data/cache and restart then you should be good to go.
As far as I have tested everything worked fine. Please let me know if you have any problems and I'll try fix them.
I've added copies of the original files on the next page in case anyone ever needs them.
Thanks for the input , I installed the apk and file.xml and I have not noticed improvement in video quality. What I have noticed is that the videos take up a lot more storage space than before ...
Thanks for the feedback. I've not done much testing of it myself yet. I've had time to playback one 4K recording I took on my 4K TV vs. A couple of other ones I'd taken before the mod and the new one does look slightly more crisp. The two videos are in different conditions so it could be the lighting. I'll need to take some before and after shots of the same thing and see how it looks.
The 720 and 1080, I agree, I can't see much of a difference except slightly more dark "noise" and a larger file size. It could be a limitation of the hardware or something. Perhaps it tells it to capture more and it tries - but it just can't.
It definitely needs more testing and more feedback from anyone else who wants to try it would be greatly appreciated.
Could other things also be incorporated like some manual unlocked controls ? Or maybe ISO control in 23 MP too? Some of the features from the other camera based thread for the xperias ?
I'm pretty sure I saw something like that for an old xperia camera and there was an xposed module for the z2 that unlocked the 20mpx in certain modes so I assume these things are possible. I'm not a developer in any way though and have no idea how to do that to be honest.
I've learned some stuff so far messing about with this about how to decompile and look through the code but that sounds like a job for someone who knows what they are doing

I've had a quick look at that APK from over there and all I've really been able to see is the ISO names and values. I could change the values but as I don't really know what I'm doing I don't know where I'd begin to enable ISO control at 23mpx. There's nothing simple I can see like "change this to enable it"
This is why devs get paid the big bucks and I'm definitely in over my head.
Maybe send off a PM to xswxm and ask him if he could mod the camera for you.

OK so after a lot more messing around it seems there is a bitrate point at which there is no longer an increase in notable quality of the video but the file sizes still get bigger as you keep increasing the bitrate. 54 mbps to my eye seems to be a good maximum for 1080p and I couldn't see any real increase of quality after 22mbps on 720p. 54 1080p might even be too high still. I'd be interested to know what other people see in terms of quality.

You need to mount the folder as read/write instead of read only or you can't make any changes inside it. Going by what you described you never tried to rename the files you were going to replace first which would give you the same error too and which I would advise you to do too
You'll be glad you didn't overwrite them if you want to change back at some point.

Just in case you never kept the old ones and want them back later
