[Q] Trick WP7 to use Data connection as Wi-fi(larger marketplace downloads) ? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Trying to see if this is possable....
What I would like to do, is make my WP7 device see my Data Connection as a Wi-Fi connection to download larger apps from the Marketplace when I am away from home or away from a wi-fi connection. Something that could be turned on and off.
Is this even possable ?
I hate the fact because I am on the road I can't buy a new App because of it's size, even tho I am on a full 5 bar 3G connection.....
Thoughts ?

My guess is that there is a throttling bit set in the registry for the Zune app for when not on wifi - I just can't seem to find it.

There's a value which appears to control this limit specified a file in \My Documents\Zune\PimentoCache\Keepers. The files there are downloaded to the phone based on your carrier and OEM, but they can be temporarily replaced (this is how my OEM Marketplace XAPs work).

Are you saying that what I am looking for IS possable ?
If so where do I get started with this ?
I'd love something that could go in the Settings menu to enable a 50mb limit or something, that I can turn off when I am done.

You'll need to interop unlock and/or root your phone so you can browse/edit the registry.

Now that this thread is back open.. I would like to see if it's possable to get to the bottom of this.
What my dream is here... A little app that is in the Settings that will allow you to change your settings to allow the limit to extend to 50-100mb for a short time. This will allow users to download a larger App from the marketplace.
One of my biggest hates on WP7 is when I am on the road (not at home or by a wi-fi network), I can not BUY a new app because of it's size limits.
Has anyone tried this ? And do you need root access on your device for an app to be able to change this setting (by just flipping a switch) ?
Thanks !

Check this thread for more details that might be useful.

I had the same issue and the solution to it is to edit the xml files LKG_MOConfig.xml and Downloaded_MOConfig.xml located at /My Documents/Zune/PimentoCache/Keepers. The download limit is set to 20 and can be edited to a higher value. I recently downloaded an 80 MB file through my 3G network. The only downside it seems is the files get replaced by the OS in every few days. To get round that I have made the files read-only and testing it. Will let you know how it goes.
And yes it will require a rooted or a fully unlocked phone.
Thanks to ken52787 for figuring out the files and his thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1602691

You don't need full unlock, just interop_unlock with a file browser.

I'd remove these files. These are only valid for T-Mobile and my guess is it'll cause some problems if someone tries to buy apps with them on another network.
If someone can't figure out how to edit the xml themselves and change a single number, they probably shouldn't be messing with this to begin with.

Can these be put in a XAP ?

Good point, had a brain fart & didn;'t think these files might be courier dependent, files removed...

Actually, I'd really appreciate it if multiple people (different carriers in particular, I already have the OEMs) posted their PimentoCache XML files. I'm working on an app that will allow people to easily switch their Marketplace settings (OEM, MO, max download size, etc.).

GDTD - Let me get these files off my Verizon Trophy and I will post so you can add to your xap. I'm off for work so it may not be until later today.

Here are the VZW files. I already edited them for 200MB download limit.

Do large download sizes put people off?

(EDIT: Apologies, the thread title should have stated this is relevant to the market(s))
I'm considering creating a series of applications, some of which contain a database of images thus making the final apk size quite large.
Does large file sizes for reference programs (when the user knows there will be a large amount of data involved) put them off downloading it or do people prefer having things pulled from a host? (or even having a small app size but then asking the user to install xx MB to there SD card?)
I suppose the best option would be to have an option for both.. but just want to know what other dev's have done in this situation.
(P.S - First post.. lurked here for a while but mainly been at modaco )
Whats puts me off is when I want to buy a program and I know I will not be able to test it within 15 minutes because of the extra files needed after the install.
I'm not paying for something I can't test out, blame stupid Google for their 15 minutes refund policy.
i don't really like large size file
why not pull the images from the interweb when the app opens?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
It depends on what you mean by "large."
I don't want to spend time downloading an app that is a few hundred megs.
If it is only a few megs, I don't think of it as large though.
I'll also add that I don't want to download an app to find that I have to download more things to use it. If it is pulling data from a host, I don't want to experience any delays at all.
Thanks for the responses but I think I ended up answering my own question in the first post - have the option for both.
The best option from a dev point of view is downloading the extra files first, then the reliability and speed of hosting isn't as much of an issue as people won't need to access these on demand.
As I'm typing this post a 4th option has also become apparent - download all the text data in the beginning and for each entry you can pull the image manually.
Some of the apps are most useful on the go (Think: Wine lists/database), making using their mobile data compulsory would put people off I think.
Thanks for the advice
P.S By large I mean less than 70mb, which I'd say is quite large for a phone app)

[Q] Hiding an app from windowsphone.com marketplace

Hello guys,
Do you think that is possible to hide an app from being visible on queries on the windowsphone.com marketplace but keep it visible on searches trough the phone?
I am not considering the case of private/public betas
Well, there are private stores, such as the business stores and such, which are invite-only. Then there's "private" stores like the OEM stores and such, where some phones can see that store but it's not normally reachable from another phone or the website.
I don't know of any other such option. What's the use case?
Well, I don't want to get into the matter too much, since it is not a problem (and I don't want to talk about piracy)
but there is an app in the Italian marketplace developed by my carrier, which app isn't obviously available outside the Italian marketplace.
I was able to download it and install it by searching for it through the phone marketplace. But the same app isn't visible on the windowsphone.com marketplace.
When I search for it I get as a suggestion, on the auto-complete list, the name of the app. But then as soon as I open it, the page says that it couldn't find the app.
It is really intriguing.
Maybe they just opened their own exclusive store.
(But my phone is branded to another carrier, Vodafone Italy). So how does my phone get access to such marketplace?
So my Carrier's marketplace name is TIMIT
I was able to access it with Phone7Market and some trial and error
Possibly bad data
I would not rule out a small error in the database behind the Marketplace as the reason for this phenomenon.
I personally had several cases where I checked the Marketplace with IE on my PC for interesting apps among the daily new apps, and when I clicked on the link to the publisher in the app description to see who made that app and check whether that publisher made other apps as well, I got an error message "no such publisher".
I think this "small data error" theory really is as probable as some hidden Marketplace feature that so far noboby knows the details about...
Mobile Operators (MOs, or carriers) can have their own private stores just like OEMs. I actually know where the files the control this on your phone are located, and they can be modified or overwritten (my OEM Marketplace XAPs replace the OEM ones). Items from MO or OEM stores don't appear in the "public" views of the Marketplace, such as the website.
But how is it possible that I can access my MO private marketplace by using a phone branded by another carrier?
I understand that it is just a string to edit in the registry, but can they do it over the air? or the phone isn't smart enough to change it, like it changes MMS and APN settings by changing SIM card?
Thanks
Do *NOT* change the registry to do this! I'm not even sure if that would work short-term, and long-term it would mess up your phone (break the Marketplace and all apps installed from it until you hard-reset).
There are a couple of apps that will safely change the MOMarketplace. They are similar to my OEM Marketplace XAPs, except they work as actual apps that you install and then make a selection in (requires root-unlock). One of them even allows you to lock the file read-only so the phone doesn't overwrite it with its branded one.
Thanks,
I don't want to change or edit the registry.
I just wanted to know how it works:
my question was:
how is it possible that I can access my TIM ITALIA private marketplace since I am using a VODAFONE ITALY branded phone?
Apparently is not a registry key. There should be something on the SIM Card,
unless LG's app "Network configurator" changes that key according to the SIM Card insert.
Where did you read that I want to change that registry key?

unlock my omnia w

i want to sync pdf files to my phone..i am a medical student..my ebooks are as large as 200-250mb..so i cant email them to myself and redownload..i tried Tappin, remote drive and other apps from marketplace..but nothing seem to work out..please help me..i am not too much into hacking unless its absolutely necessary..now i think its necessary..i read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=917423
and came to know that i need to deploy touchXplorer to my device but could not do that without unlocks..
I wanted to know:
1.how to unlock my omnia w with these details:
OS version:7.10.8773.98
Firmware revision number:2424.12.04.3
Hardware revision number:23.15.0.8
Radio software version:0424.12.3.1
Radio hardware version:0.0.0.900
Bootloader version:6.4.25.0
Chip SOC version:0.74.2.1
(I think this much details are enough)
2.If at all I unlock it does it void my warranty??
3.If yes, is there any way to relock my phone so that i can get back my warranty??
4.If at all I brick my phone in the middle of some unlocking process, is there any way to restore it completely to factory defaults??
I read that there are currantly no methods to sync pdfs over usb connection without any unlocks..if i am wrong and if anyone of you know how it can be done, please teach me..i really don't want to go through all these tedious unlocking procedures(unless its necessary)..
Thanks in advance
The easiest way to unlock a Samsung WP7 device is WindowBreak, which is easy, free, and far from tedious... except that your firmware version is too new to use it (you would need to be on *.11.11.04 or earlier, I think... KK4 worked, but KK7 didn't, and your current version definitely won't). If you've had your phone since last year, you could try just restoring to a backup made prior to installing an update on you phone - you'd lose changes to the phone since then, but if it's old enough you'd get WindowBreak-compatible firmware back.
The second easiest way is to use the official developer unlock. This doesn't allow you to install high-privilege apps, though.
However, in your case, I think that neither approach is the right one (and TouchXplorer wouldn't run on your phone anyhow; it's HTC-only. There are other file browsers like WP7 Root Tools that you would use instead). First of all, I'm not at all sure that the PDF Reader app on WP7 can open a 200MB file; that's 40% of the RAM in most of these phones, and I've seen the app chug badly on much smaller files. However, if you're determined to give it a try, here's one option that may work:
First, upload the file to SkyDrive (Microsoft's "cloud" storage). I don't know what the limit on individual file sizes is, but the storage cap is something like 7GB so that should be fine.
Second, install the SkyDrive app on your phone (it's free), or just browse to the SkyDrive site using the phone's browser.
Third, open the PDF. It will take a long time to download (make sure you're on WiFi) but the browser will definitely open it in Adobe Reader directly, and I think the SkyDrive app will too.
Alternatively, upload the file to any other web site that you can, and download it from there using the phone's web browser.
Many PDF ebooks have DRM on them. I can't promise that the Adobe Reader app for WP7 is even capable of opening those, regardless of size...

Anything we need to do about the latest WPA2 vulnerabilities that were found?

This is the story I'm referring to for those who haven't heard yet.
I just got my Note 8 on Saturday and did get a carrier update later in the day, not sure if it was related to this. Anyone have any info on what we need to do or are we waiting for AT&T/Samsung to release a patch?
From the link:
As a result, all Android versions higher than 6.0 are also affected by the attack, and hence can be tricked into installing an all-zero encryption key. The new attack works by injecting a forged message 1, with the same ANonce as used in the original message 1, before forwarding the retransmitted message 3 to the victim. In each case, the attacker can force a targeted device to re-install an already-in-use shared key, downgrading the key.

This will require an update from Samsung. Not holding my breath on that happening anytime this year.
Avoid public wifi like the plague. Even after the patch I'd stay away from it.
Also this includes turning on your hotspot in public. At least until a patch is pushed out.
That will keep you safe for about 6 months until the next bug is discovered. It's the nature of IT security.
One thing that is a great idea and an awesome feature on Samsung is the "Secure Folder" app.
You can use it to store pictures, files, apps, etc. They are encrypted by the KNOX container and require a pin or password to open the secure folder.
If you move let's say, your private pictures, your banking app, and any sensation files (eg credit cards, ID, passport, etc) into the app even if your phone gets compromised you should be okay.
*as a disclaimer I work in ISO for a fortune 100 company. More than will to offer any advice about protecting your phone, computer, wifi etc.
Thanks I didn't think about using the Secure Folder. I just moved (not copied) a photo into there to test it but the photo still shows up in the gallery, yet I don't see it when browsing for it from within the Secure Folder.
When something is within this folder, can it still be accessed from outside the app or do you always need to open the app, type in the password and then access it? Like could I still attach photos from there easily into a message/email or do I need to go in there, move them out of the folder, attach them, them move them back? Hope that makes sense.

No if it moved correctly it should be hidden unless you are in the secure folder.

Hacked Galaxy S10e

Hi Everyone
I'm assume my phone been hacked or cloned I'm not sure what's the right word for it but I need help to find out If I'm right or I'm just being paranoid.
Galaxy S10e SM-GF970F
Phone status Official
One UI version 3.0
Android version 11
I find in my battery usage my secure folder using 381 MB of data what I hardly use, , 324 MB Foreground, 57 MB background.
In the secure folder checking wi-fi data usage , on the bottom has "something" named 15010286 what used 5,41 kb data in the past week..
Some of my setting are changing, like I had swithed off the option to show up the letter or number when I typing passwords etc.
When I checking battery usage in settings, I scrolling down and after couple seconds its jump up the top again.
My question would be: any program what would find the program what the intruder used?
How can be sure if Im hacked or how can I clean my phone??
Thanks
Sounds less like a hacker and more like just a buggy phone xD. This behaviour is in fact strange but I would doubt that this is a hacker. Maybe you've downloaded some cracked apks from the internet and accidentally downloaded malware.
Maybe this isn't the best way but try this:
Go to device care, device security (or something similar) and scan your phone. If there is an obvious malware the scan will detect it. if not, I cannot help you.
Personally I store everything on my sd card so I would just do a factory reset. Idk about you.
Thanks for the reply.
I have SOPHOS "antieverything" on my phone, the only app what didn't come from google play was the latest Vanced.
Device care/device security shows no malware.
I have 100 GB data on my phone, my SD card encrypted, same as my phone. Any advice what is the easiest way to save all those pictures and videos before I factory reset my phone? Preferably direct to an USB as most likely my PC and home network hacked too.
Thanks
