[Q] Complete newbie help!!!! - General Questions and Answers

Hi everyone,
I was about to sell my hd2 when i discovered the versatility of the device its great!!
however, after joining this site, i am at a bit of a loss....
i would love to start of with just some themes, but a lot of them require "CHT2" just wondering what that was and how i find out if i have/ how to get it.
also, what is the best and most reliable build of android as i am sure i will want to convert!! (along with the best accompanying guide, on kernels, radios etc) i have heard of darkstone, but i would really appreciate any help.
Any threads any1 can suggest would be much appreciated, and if possible i would really love to upgrade to android 2.3, but is it reliable does the marketplace still work etc. etc
sorry for being such a total newbie
any info much appreciated thanks!!!

Hi and welcome to the forum!
The HD2 is a great device and very popular. There's a huge amount of information HERE in the Leo forum which you'll want to read. I'm pretty sure that anything that can be with that phone has been covered there already.
It would be great having Android on your phone and you can do it, but you may want to explore some of the customization options for WM first. CHT is Cookies Home Tab and it allows for more modding possibilities and gives you more control over the general appearance.
I'd suggest going through any screenshot type threads to see what other people have done with their phones and try to find out what they used to do it.
Good luck and happy modding

new user looking to upgrade to WM6

Ok guys let me start by saying that i have recently purchased a M5000 which came with WM5 and i am now looking to upgrade to WM6. I have to apologise in advance as it is a new unit i am a total newb so i have a few questions.
1. Do i simply install a new ROM to upgrade?
2. If so what is considered the best version and where can it be found?
3. If i upgrade do i lose all my installed programs?
The unit is currently running with the orange side bar which i find a little annoying this is the main reason for wanting to change.
Like i say i am new so i can only apologise if my questions seem a little stupid. I have tried searching the forums for the answers but to no avail.
Many thanks in advance

2.- Tomal ROM v8.5, do a SEARCH!
3.- Yes
Please READ the Wiki!! and enjoy
Many thanks Orb. I did try doing a search but unfortunately there were no polls on the subject and there did seem to be a few different versions available so i was looking for advice. I have found all the info on the wiki so i will be giving it a bash this weekend. Appreciate your help though.

Good luck,
Cheers orb. I had already seen the that update but my dilemma was that there are several other updates available and i wasnt sure what the general feeling as to the best one was. My initial thoughts were that the tomal was the most popular due to the number of posts and posters mentioning it in their sigs.
Whats the difference between the standard and special builds?
Are there any extra system requirements for the special build?
Thanks for your help though. I know to you it must seem a little trivial but i can assure you that your help has given me the extra confidence i probably needed to undertake the update.
At this point my friend
The best recommendation is to test several! till you have the one that fits your personal needs (I have tested a lot to find mine)
And really, you have to read!
You´ll find what is the difference between
Vanilla, standard, etc ROM´s
And many many more very usefull info
You know what is my recommendation
Enjoy!
p.d. You don´t need any extra requirements for that special build

Apprenticeship

Hello,
I'm relatively new to the Android community however I'm getting really excited over it. I'm planning on getting the MyTouch 3g (HTC Magic) 32B tomorrow and I'd like to make use of it for something other than entertainment. I'd like to learn how to write applications and maybe even ROMs for android phones.
My main question is if any 'good' developer here would take me as an apprentice. I wouldn't mind doing testing and other menial jobs, however I would like to be taught how to create applications and ROMs alike.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for any help or direction given.

You can ask and learn there
Good luck,
Thank you.

Evo ROM Development Guide / Tips / Tricks

Hopefully some of the more experienced ROM devs can comment here to bring together information for myself and others like me. After all, this is XDA-Developers.
I'm new to Android but not to Java or ROM development (played with WM for years). I'd like to help but I'm not sure from where I should start here. I've got plenty of dev experience (Linux included) and am good at debugging, so I wouldn't mind donating some time to the cause. Are there any references / articles / tutorials you would recommend for getting started with Android ROMs? Perhaps some personal recommendations as far as the best way to have your primary device double as a development device or any other related tips? I don't mind flashing the phone repeatedly to test ROMs as long as I can get back to a good backup relatively quickly without having to spend hours setting up my phone all over again. I'd love to have a stable version of Froyo for our phones and hate simply waiting / depending on others to do all the work... I'd just like to help the process along, however large or small that help may be. Thank you to anyone who can provide some useful resources, my searches seem to only uncover Android application development guides.
Update:
Decad3nce has been kind enough to compile a list of resources regarding Android ROM development which can be found here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696001
(sorry, can't post direct links yet)
I'm not sure how helpful this is just yet, but there is also a thread by djunio titled "Everything You Need to Cook an EVO ROM" which contains a zip file. Inside the 300 or so MB zip file you can find all of the stock Evo img files. This thread can be found here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=686351
I am getting a blog set up for guides just like the one you are requesting. I will post about it when it's ready.
I am trying to figure stuff out myself...but no luck.
I mean I've gotten things to flash now, but they don't work yet

Really looking forward to this. Sorry this post adds no value.
I threw together a quick little resource for anyone interested in ROM development(or just on how to mod stuff).
You can find it HERE
That's a great resource, thank you so much! This is exactly the kind of information I was looking for to help me get started on Android. I played with Windows Mobile for years, then went to the Palm Pre, and now am back to my favorite forum with Android. I can quite honestly say this is by far my favorite phone yet, and I can already tell I'm going to enjoy "playing" with the Android OS much more. Thanks again for the resources, Decad3nce.
chuckhriczko, thank you in advance for the blog as well, I'm sure it will also be a great resource and look forward to it!

Not a problem, feel free to add stuff once you learn something that could be useful for other people. Everyone benefits that way.
Thank you very much. I'm new to Android and I would love to learn how make custom ROMS and remove all the crap from the Stock RUU. I dearly prefer Stock Androids directly from Google though.

Hi, welcome to the forum!
It can be massively overwhelming for new users here to know what is acheivable and what isn't, especially if you're not too familiar with the OS on the device you are using.
I would suggest getting to know the forum and learning which sections are relevant to you first. Browse around for a while and read some guides. What really helped me was to focus on the 'Post your Home Screen', screenshot type threads where people showed what they had done with their own phones. This way you can see what is acheivable and start leaning how to get there yourself.
FAQ/Guides/Wiki stickies are a good resource and are found in most of the forums.
Well for starters decide if you want to root your phone or not - read about what's that about, how does it "liberate" your device (AND YOU) from the tyranny of evil phone produces, just how badly you can break your device (the warnings), etc. After that you can begin trying different ROMs (custom firmwares) for your device, until you find the one, that suits your needs. Then learn BASH and begin writing scripts, hacking the living hell out of your device...
...or just use a custom "launcher" app, if you literally want your phone to look different. You can find some at the Market.
PS: Either way remember, the search bar is your friend. Before posting check if anybody has asked the same question - at least 95% of cases you'll find more about your problem/question, just by searching.

[Q] Desire S to Desire S Custom

Hello,
First of all congratulations to this fantastic community, I found here much useful information and always updated.
I have an HTC Desire S bought a few months, it's my first Android and I must say I'm happy with it. The e-mail applications, calendars, tasks, etc ... are fantastic and incredibly useful especially for those using lots of Google applications.
Well let's but my questions, I'd like to install a rom but as I said is my first Android so I do not understand much about it.
First of all I would like to make a full copy of what I have now if you want to come back as is. Secondly how can I do and what is the best way to install a rom on my equipment.
I apologize for the questions, but I'm not even really in the know and of course do not want to do anything wrong!
I look forward to help, thank you
Please refer to this thread. A lot of useful info are linked from there.
