[TEST]Battery Tests on Stock Galaxy S - Captivate General

First of all full credit goes out to sapiensbryan for giving me permission to post this from his blog.
I'm putting up here for everyone's information because I think this could be of use to us. There was only one link to one of the battery test videos on YouTube that I saw on XDA but not the complete test results or graph I am posting here, if I'm wrong I'm sure somebody will let me know.
I think a lot of us have forgotten or never knew how our phones battery reacted under these situations when it was running completely stock. I never had all this info and basically only knew how long my phone lasted on a charge.
Now we have a reference point as to how our modded ROM's are compared to stock.
Thanks again bryan for the work on this

A few friends, blog readers and twitter followers asked me about the battery life of Samsung Galaxy S in the past few days. Me too was interested to know what is the battery performance under extreme usage. Besides, I’m sure potential customers would like to see some statistics so that they can stop wondering about the battery performance of Samsung Galaxy S.
Therefore, I performed 4 battery tests 5 battery tests in the past 30+ hours 40+ hours and finally we have some answers to the battery related questions. Below are the objectives of all 4 battery tests I did :-
* Test 1: Find out how long will the battery last (from 100% battery level to 0%) when connecting to an active Wifi Connection
* Test 2: Find out how long will the battery last (from 100% battery level to 0%) when connecting to an active 3G Data Connection
* Test 3: Find out how long will the battery last under continuous movie playing
* Test 4: Find out how long we need to fully charge the battery after it’s completely flat (0% battery level)
* Just added 1 more Music Playing (Test 5).

Samsung Galaxy S Battery Test Final Battery Test Results (now with Music Playing result)
General settings for all 4 tests
* Lowest brightness level
* Medium speaker volumn
* The screen is always lit throughout the tests
* Not running any screen saver
Test 1: Active Wifi Connection
* 1. Connect to an online radio via Wifi connection
* 2. Let it run until the phone switches off when the battery is depleted
Result: The phone was running for 9 hours 57 minutes before switching off itself.
Test 2: Active 3G Data Connection
* 1. Connect to an online radio via 3G Data connection
* 2. Let it run until the phone switches off when the battery is depleted
Result: The phone was running for 4 hours 47 minutes before switching off itself.
Test 3: Continuous Movie Playing
* 1. Continuously play some movies using the default movie player
* 2. Let it run until the battery level reaches 10%
Result: The phone was running for 6 hours 29 minutes before the battery level reached 10%. Movie player will stop running when the battery level falls to 10%. 6 hours 29 minutes of continuous playing time is more than enough to play 3 sets of movies at normal length.
Test 4: Charging Time
* 1. Fully charge the phone using original Samsung Travel Charger after the battery was completely depleted
Result: The phone needs 3 hours 47 minutes to get fully charged after the battery was completely depleted.
Below is the video documenting all the 4 battery tests :-
YouTube Video of First Four Tests
Test 5: Continuous Music Playing
* 1. Continuously play some songs via earphone using the default music player
Result: The phone was running for 13 hours 9 minutes and we still have 39% battery level. That’s about playing 263 songs of 3 minutes long each
Below is the video documenting the Music Playing test :-
YouTube Video of Music Test
I hope the results of the above battery tests are useful and help to clear doubts regarding Samsung Galaxy S battery performance. Now at least we have an idea how will the battery perform under extreme usage. As for normal usage, the phone should be able to last for the whole day under occasional Internet surfing, email checking, photo & video shooting, viewing video and listening to songs.

Not too bad, considering the screen never turned off.

+1 it may not be a big deal to most but I thought this had some good info like the simple charging of the battery from dead to full. I don't even recall actually. And Whoah what a difference from wifi to using 3g.

Not bad...

So with the stock battery, 4g on, background data syncing on (twitter every 15 mins, fb every hour, push gmail, weather every hour) 20 mins of GPS usage, some youtube, some Words With Friends, some Angry Birds, lots of texting and tweeting, and about 45 minutes of actual talking on the phone, installing about 20 apps, and setting up about 10 of them... and its still going, no there isn't much left at all, 5%, but the battery life isn't as horrible as everyone is making it out to be. Every type of data transfer or sync or stream was done over 4g, I never turned the 4G radio off at all, never disabled background sync, any of that. I did have the "power saver" mode come on at 15%, but by that time I was already over 22 hours on the battery.
This was with Adryn kernel and BAMF 1.1 rom. SetCPU profile only for screen off, 245/245. If I can get a solid 24 hours out of a very lightly *tweaked* stock rom and kernel, I can only imagine how good it could get a few months from now.
BTW I have a pretty constant -62 db rating for LTE, which is amazing if you ask me.
Pretty awesome. I also set a setcpu for 245mhz min/max when the screen is off. But i keep messing with the phone to haveit last that long lol.
I also have mines exclusively in 4G mode. LTE is a beautiful thing. OHHH
Also...
I installed spare parts and set the animations and transitions to "fast". ive been showing my friends. This phone is "flying". everything keeps up with it too.
Glad you can. Sadly, every device is different :/ I get about 10 hours out of mine. Although, that's just an estimate. I haven't let it drop low enough to test (usually plug in ~ 50%-60%)

I had my screen set with setcpu to 245/245 but I was getting lag when trying to unlock the phone from a blank screen
Hmm, interesting enough. I can get roughly 13-15 hours out of it on a daily basis. No charge, moderate amount of surfing.

I get a tiny bit, but its nothing that really bothers me.
Setting the CPU down that low doesn't lag out all your sync'ing? I sync a ton of RSS feeds as well (like 500+ posts a day). I have facebook, gmail, and twitter sync'ing all day too.
Only android experience I have is a Hero, and it was only like 350MHz full speed, so, lol, I remember what it was like using that. Just wondering how it affects syncs.
laters
I just configured SetCPU with the screen off 245/245 profile today, been running about 5.5 hours now, been playing music for about 3, battery is down to 65%, so definitely seeing an improvement

Battery depletion, or more to the point, the battery gauge, isn't linear. I bet you get noticeably more from the bottom50% than the top.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
4g is more efficient per byte than 3g is. As in, transfering 100mb over 4g is going to use less battery than transferring 100mb over 3g. Even though second for second 4g uses more battery than 3g. As in running 4g for 5 seconds uses more battery than 3g, but you get way more done in those 5 seconds on 4g than you do on 3g.
I wouldn't turn off 4g unless I'm in a fringe area.
That's a nice battery life. I'm gonna try tweaking mine to see if I can get anything like that.
very nice tip.
Thanks

[Fix] Battery Drainage Issue, Make battery last Longer.

Battery Drainage Fix :
There is a Dialer bug in the Chacha that drains the battery, you can see this if you go to : "settings >about phone >battery >battery use". You will see it shows dialer usage at 90%+ and this is the MAIN reason your battery drains so quickly. do the following to fix the issue.
Go to : settings >sound> Disable quiet ring on pickup, Disable pocket mode and Disable flip for speaker.
Then
Go to : settings>applications>development>enable usb debugging.
Click to collapse
Now recharge your battery to the full. Should see some change.
Additionally if you want to extend your battery even further :
I would HIGHLY recommend you install these 3 widgets, they are all small and take very little space on your phones desktop, and you can toggle each of them on/off with a single click :
Wifi - On/off
Brightness Widget
Autosync-On/off
Hope this helps all the poor souls out there with battery issues. I use my phone quite often and my battery currently as it stands now :
On time since last Full Charge : 11H 56Mins 45s
Battery Level Percentage : 44%
And Im using nothing fancy, its a Stock Rom/Stock Battery with the above settings and widgets, and i mostly browse the net with opera mini, use whatsapp, google talk, check gmail, sms, O and I play some angry birds.
Hey you are right about the Dialer being a big part of the battery drain! Thanks!
Thanks! I always wondered why it was always saying "dialer" drained 90% of my battery. I always thought HTC had it twisted with Display. I have my phone flashed with CM7 right now and the battery so far has been great! about 12 hours and 70% capacity still. Normal use (4 email accounts, whatsapp, ebay, amazon, etc. no angry birds yet. lol
I will definitely let my gf know since she kept hers stock.
Thanks again!
Hi, i have this problem, dialer usage is 90%+. So i "disable quiet ring on pickup, disable pocket mode and disable flip for speaker" and "enable usb debugging", and after full charge, i don't see "dialer usage" voice in "settings >about phone >battery >battery use". but after incoming call the voice "dialer usage" come back with 93% usage! :-((( what's the problem?
Me too, but battery work fine with all options checked.
Note, on this few days usage phone is very low....(10 calls below 2 min, 30-40sms.......)

Ok, thanks, i'll check this and report possibile problems
I am using CM now but when I had stock (European 1.54) I recall that besides disabling the sensors (which, by itself didn't work), if all calls (both calling and receiving) were done with loudspeakers the bug didn't kick in...
good luck!
Missed step
Also need to go to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications >Dialer > Clear data > Restart Phone
my chacha battery is so bad
it takes 2.30 hours from 100% to 15 % !!
where is the problem ? battery or Rom ??
and how to make sure from that ???
Juice defender
well, try Juice defender - battery saver , works perfectly with my phone, kept it running from 8 to 20 hours

Don't those apps turn the phone's radio off while it's in standby though? I imagine that could cause issues for most people.
Yeah, the battery is too bad
Yeah, the chacha battery is too bad. Especially for 3G, I try to turn on Wifi all the time & the battery can take 40% longer, comparing to 3G network.
Turn off all sync services, auto screen rotation, uninstall all social network widgets & my battery can long for 36 hours.

Disabling "quiet ring on pickup", "pocket mode", and "flip for speaker" options in the sound menu also mildly helps. Just disabled sync services. Thanks!

Battery Life

Hi guys.
I was searching our forum and I couldn't find a thread like that.
At first I was unsure for the battery life as I received the phone and I have charged it like twice a day but you know. New phone and would like to have a fun with it and tested. After a month I still think a battery life isn't perfect but with my use it's satisfies me a lot.
Here is my stats after a day. If I turn on a stamina mode and turn off data transmision and wifi, battery should last another half a day or even longer.

As you can see I do not have a stamina mode on. I have no idea why that fecking phone app is the most used app. I don't call much. Like 5 calls a day that last for minute or two isn't much. Maybe that because I have data transmision on ? Even if I'm at home and using wifi.
How's your battery life look's like ?

The battery life is directly dependent on the user.
A light/moderate user will have battery backup up-to two days. While an Heavy user wouldn't.
So after all the battery of the device is nice but not upto the mark acc to me
My battery some time lasts for 2 days with Root applications like Greenify/Trickster Mod etc
I had already made a battery management thread a long time ago. This thread doesn't make any sense.
Sent from my C2104 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Greenify is very awsome...
also (for what reason ever) it saves a lot battery if you set a screenoff profile in setcpu with low frequency...
and when you avoid closing apps from ram or cache it also saves battery because cpu doesnt need to start apps again.
There is even the theory that setting performance governor saves battery because all actions are finished the fastest possible and so the phone returns to sleep earlier.
Greets
my battery lasts a day and has mostly about 30% after, and even now in holidays when i am not working and using it a lot its still enough... I am not using Data but play a lot of music (BT or headphones)

I don't know cause of it And why it keeps the phone awake

I agree with what you say, it is dependent on the user. You occasionally see people posting screenshots with 3 days battery and 50 smileys :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh: and I just think... did that person leave their phone in their pocket/on a table for 3 days? That doesn't impress anyone and it is a fake representation of the battery.
Battery details like this really help:
- screenshot of battery
- screenshot of SCREEN ON TIME
- a brief mention of usage e.g. 30 minutes per day of watching video, 3 hours internet, 1 hour gaming
- use of battery saving apps or not e.g. greenify, stamina mode, juice defender etc.
Those details really help.
Does anyone else have similar usage to me? I'm trying estimate what battery time might be normal for me.
- about 2 hours of internet every day. It's mostly news apps, read some email and a little browsing
- I don't use games on my phone much, typically 0 minutes per day
- Maybe about 15 minutes of calls per day
- I might send 10 texts per day
- I might take 2 pictures per day with the camera, no more
- Stamina mode active
Would I get more than 1 day usage?
Using BetterBatteryStats App will be really useful bro...

[Xperia Z3 D6603][5.0.2] battery life issues

Xperia Z3 D6603, stock ROM, non rooted, locked bootloader, Android 5.0.2, build 23.1.A.0.690.
Hello all, I have a huge problem with my Z3. I mean, battery life issues.
As you can see on the 2 pics, my device is running out of battery too quickly, and it heat up even for simple tasks!

Any help?
That's not normal.. it sucks. Will switch to LG G4 as soon as available.
how much of that was screen time using the battery?
About 3 or 4 hours max.. but I use it time to time. Wi-Fi and sometimes mobile data on cellular network.
Don't understand why the battery drain is so fast.
Stamina mode doesn't change a thing. Almost always on manual low brightness and I have to use my power bank (external battery) when I'm away.

I have the exact same issues, the phone was going very strong for the first 6 months (7-8 hrs SoT) and then it all went bad (3-4 hrs Max). I've tried MANY things and the issue seems to be **mainly** with Android OS and System (especially with mobile networks "staying active").
What kind of worked for me is:
Turn off "double tap to wake screen"
Delete any 3rd party alarm apps (clearly helped)
Turn off "Google Location History" in Google settings
Check for stuck sync
After doing all of this i got about +2hrs screen on time, but it all went bad again (even with them still off)... So I'm interested in your feedback and others' answers!
I'll try that. I assume Timely is a 3r party alarm apps?
Check out this pic.. battery discharging during the night and lost more than 20% by using it one hour (simple web browsing and stuff). I'm starting to hate this phone.
By the way, congrats for your 1st post

Yes I think we have the exact same problem, my phone discharges about 2-3% on airplane mode through the night. And as you said, my normal use means that I lose 10% to every 30 minutes of screen (under normal conditions).
Yes I mean Timely! it drained the battery on my phone and only showed up as a problem on Gsam and wakelock detector! i wouldn't have known otherwise, its disguised as Android OS or System!
Its very disappointing given that it was working very well before!
Stuck with the same problem.. and they boast about Xperia Z3 amazing battery life.. that device sucks. Switching to LG G4 as soon as available. Sony disappointed me, they failed me.
I use Timely to wake up because this app is well designed and I love the smart rise feature.
That said, Android says OS and screen process drains battery the most.

I think you should first try what I suggested for a day or two and see the results, should be an improvement, though I don't know how much...
I used timely for exactly the same thing, but as all google products these days, it drains the battery I'm really dissapointed with Google more than Sony, I have the same problems on all my lollipop devices (2 nexuses). Nothing Sony can do about it...
With flastool you can go back to KitKat if Lollipop doesn't perform good for you.
I have good experience with the .77 Version and still have a backup of it in twrp.
You have a very weak signal (the red color) which is draining battery.
Android OS is the Kernel.
Use better battery stats which is free here from xda.
Also check app permissions of your installed apps.
And a calibration of the battery may help.
With full auto brightness and mixed 3G/wifi browsing and listening to music via Bluetooth or headset I have 6h Display on in 2 or 3days on Lollipop.
But prerooted / debloated / tweaked Rom .690 with good signal.
I know the signal is bad and is a cause I'm my case. I was living in Germany for a few months and got around 7h over 2 days, it halved when I moved back to jordan. However it's still getting worse, noticeably since I turned off and uninstalled many things (it got better for 2 days *6hr and then went back to bad *3-4hr). But still the point is why buy a smartphone if you have to turn off everything just to get it through the day. The problem is that you get the feeling that no matter what you do with the phone it still drains (which looks like a system or app issue because it does even when I'm only using Wi-Fi or even 3/4g on full signal)...
Well there is no magic button to improve the battery life.
Yes there is, Airplane Mode.

Where can I see battery usage since last charge (the total time)?

So I am new to both the S10e and Android 10 (or 9) and I can't find where the total battery usage since the last charge is displayed. On the battery usage page there is only 2 charts which show percentages, and not time, individual times per app, not total time, and even if I were to manually add the individual times together, for each separate day, I'm still missing standby time. Googling I found that there is supposed to be a 3-dot menu button to enable full usage statistics but I can't find that either. Am I just being a noob or did Samsung decide we don't need to now the usage time since last charge?
I use GSam Battery Monitor. You can find it in the Play Store.

I will check it that app out but did Samsung really remove this basic information or Google did? I don't really like adding yet another app for something that should be there by default.
So I've been googling for the past few days and found little to no information on this issue. What makes it worse is that I don't even know if this is standard in Android 10, it's only on Samsung phones, or only on this specific model. Installing a third party app is something I am trying to avoid, but after all the useless information on the net (when you google android and battery, the results you get are either people complaining about battery life or people providing the same old useless tips for improving battery life, none of which answer my question) I've actually answered my own question. It seems the information I seek was there all along, hidden in plain sight (though not exactly what I was looking for but it's better than nothing). Check the shot below:

The second chart has the time. 0 - 4 - 8 - 12 - 16 - 20. Why it's in sections of 4, I dont know, why it's missing the key number, 24, I don't know, why they didnt bother adding just a small "h" to the scale so people can see those numbers are actually hours, I don't know. Now, this still doesn't give me the total usage since last full charge (the charge was on dec 19th) because I have yet to find a way to select multiple days, if I select the individual days, 19,20 and 21 and approximately add up the charts, I get the total time. So, 21st has about 12h (as you can see above), 20th has 24h, and 19th has about 20-30 mins there, I'd say 36-37 hours of usage since last charge. Now, why exactly they removed this tiny bit of useful information is beyond me (it's been there all the way up till Android 8, I don't about 9, and it's gone in 10, or just removed by Samsung, again still don't know if it's been removed by Google or specific to Samsung only, I don't have another non-Samsung Android 10 phone just lying around for me to check).
Maybe someone can shed some light on this issue, maybe there is a way to select multiple days in the chart so it's automatically added up, maybe it will be added back in a future patch (yeah, right).
I've seen Android 10 on Pixel 4, it shows battery usage and screen on time since last full charge, so it's just OneUI 2.0 that doesn't.
Not only they removed this, they also removed idle time and its battery usage.
This would be my last Samsung phone.

I appreciate the confirmation. At least we know it's on Samsung, not Google.
Anyone know of an app that adds the battery settings back to the quick settings? It's REALLY inconvenient to get the battery stats for this. I can't understand why Samsung removed that from quick settings.
I noticed the same issue with my S10e. This OS seems to be full of bugs and issues [emoji35]
