[Q] removed swype by accident!!! - Galaxy Tab Themes and Apps

can someone please help me!
the device is almost unusable without swype....
can somene please help me to get the swype files from a the xwjj7 rom?
i dont know how to do it... im one of those 'noobs' im hearing about..
what do i do? how do i do it?
i have tried to download variouos other swype apks but they just forceclose...
andd i tried the beta, but they dont support the tablet screen size..
please help!

An easier method for you would be to perform a Factory Reset.
This will load up the stored ROM file which amongst everything else will load the necessary Swype data files.

i tried that
but it didnt
i still only have the samsung keyboard
but no swype
is this a bug? that it doesnt restore swype??
when factory reseting it says
all USER data will be deleted but not system files
isnt that a little dumb?

Mmmm... I've looked into this and yes you are right.
In Android a Factory Reset aka Hard reset resets the phone back to what it was before you installed anything.
However,, if you changed any system files, rom, custom animations, battery bar, deleted bloat ware, or changed any files on the phone, they do not get put back. You need to flash the phone.
So, it would appear your options are again to see if you can either get hold of the two missing files and re-install or use Odin and a copy of the ROM image (samfirmwares.com)

No it won't - /system is usually read-only unless you root, so it "assumes" that /system has been untouched and does nothing with it.

Yes Dave, I've just realized it was a rooted phone and we were talking of system files.

If you are unfamiliar with mounting RFS files, I'd suggest you download MoDaCo's ROM from here as it is a zip file.
You can then extract the /system/app/Swype.apk and /system/lib/libSwypeCore.so from the zip file and push them to the appropriate directories on your Tab.
Regards,
Dave

modaco swype is small you going to waste your time
download ultra iso . find the tar for your rom. extract the factoryfs and open with ultra iso and then remove what you need

Some people actually prefer the smaller Swype - even in landscape mode!
MoDaCo Beta 2, which should be released today, has the full res Swype according to the change log.

It's interesting that there is so much controversy regarding the different swype versions. It seems to be a fashion vs function argument, fullscreen swype definitely looks better when you're looking at it on the screen, unfortunately in landscape it is useless for actually swyping as the keys are too far apart, thus the smaller keyed version. That being said it really is very easy to push, or copy using Root Explorer, whatever version you prefer to the tab as mentioned above.

I can Swype perfectly fine using the fullscreen one. Maybe the smaller one so that's it's under your right thumb (or left, if you're cool) instead of in the middle

Default launcher, and app removal...

Just a few quick questions that I had trouble finding answers to.
1. Easy way to set the default launcher to launcher.apk, even if rosie is removed it still shows up after flashing rom?...
2. When I unzip a rom, remove apk's, resign, and flash, many of the apk's I had removed still show up. Rosie, sprint nfl, default music, htc contacts, etc. Anyone know why this is? Tried with several different roms and wiped excessively. Still seem to be several app's I cannot remove without adb'ing after flash...
Thanks in advance

Aah sorry I missed that. It could be that the apps you're attempting to remove that are being left-over are in /system/app... because wiping Data doesn't remove them from there.

Thanks, strange, shouldn't it format system/app on flash? Anyone tell me how I might accomplish that?
Actually now that I think about it, even if I adb rm, and flash a rom with the apk's removed, they still show up.
Wow... I have no idea then Nevermind, scratch that! DO you have an ext partition or Apps2SD installed? That would be the culprit!!!!!

nope, weird right? think I got sprint nfl out by default finally. Still got Rosie, music, people...
default im won't go away either, or weather.
Screw it, i'll just make a .bat, what a pain...
Well I think I found my problem, not sure how to fix it tho if anyone can lead me in the right direction. I've been using fresh pre-kitchen to sign zips. Seems no matter what I put in the update-script before I sign it with pre-kitchen this is all I have in there afterword...
show_progress 0.1 0
copy_dir PACKAGE:system SYSTEM:
show_progress 0.1 10
So obviously it's not formatting system. or doing anything but copying "system". I can also try to edit/replace the update-script after I sign the zip but that gives me a "E:/Wrong Digest .../update-script E:Verification failed" error when I attempt to flash.
All I'm trying to do is add a data folder to damagecontrol2.07.2, remove some apps, rosie, add a new taskbar, and lockscreen.
Is there any better easy way to do this, update-script is killing me.....
Suppose I could try to sign it manually, but I'm a noob and lazy I guess, easy and quick is good. Anyone else having this sort of problem with pre-kitchen?
I already got damagecontrol running on my phone with all the things I want using a .bat, just trying to figure out how to put it all in a rom I can flash and be done with it in the future.... Thanks for any help.
I find the easiest way to sign update.zip's is to find the script somewhere around here (I have no idea... I found it like 4 months ago) that adds "Sign Zip" to your right-click context menu. If you do that, then all you have to do is pull the META-INF folder from the ROM you're basing it off of, put that next to System and boot.img in the same directory, highlight them all, zip them, and then right click and sign the zip. That's how I do stuff, and it works perfectly every time.

thanks, I'll take a look around for it.
No problem. If it helps, I'm pretty sure I found the script on a Droid forum. I'd help you look for it, but I have homework to do that involves Shakespearian soliloguy's... and Shakespeare is not one of my forte's.
Found one for linux here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538020
to bad I'm on windows at the moment, might be about time to go back to ubuntu anyway.
Anyone got one for windows for sh..s and giggles?
ahhh well I've been using winzip to zip the files, seems others have been having problems also, supposedly 7-zip works better? I'll post results in case anyone else has similar issues.
Nice! found the windows script for right click also incase anyone wants it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6232592
Yep problem was winzip. works like a charm when zipped with 7zip... tried zips from both winzip and 7zip with pre-kitchen and the script, update-script in the winzip'd files is always bare. odd. Thanks for pointing me to the script mrinehart, doesn't get easier than that.
No problem! Glad you were able to find it and get everything working

[Q] Galaxy S2, installing camera hack by potatoman

Hi all,
Apologies for such a newbie question. I can assure you I have been searching for a couple of hours trying to find the answer but have had no luck.
I have a Galaxy S2 and would like to install 'Potatomans' camera hack to record video at a higher bitrate.
I have followed steps to 'root' the phone which has worked fine but I am having trouble installing the camera hack....
Firstly, I can't rename camera.apk using 'File Expert' (Error: 'could not rename') and there is no option for me to press 'mount' in the top right. (I heard this mentioned as a solution for the problem while searching). So how do I rename camera.apk?
Secondly, When 'Potatomans' instructions say 'copy the file over to system/app' does this mean using a client like Kies or SuperOneClick? As I downloaded the .rar file on my laptop but not sure how to get it into system/app on the S2.
Many thanks,
George

Use "root explorer" to copy your original camera.Apk to a safe location then replace it with the hacked one.
or read up on ADB and use that method.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply (thanks button clicked!)
I have done that but i cannot get it to work, the icon disappears after replacing camera.apk, it has also dissapeared from the applications menu.
When i click on camera.apk (in root explorer) and select 'install' it says 'application not installed' and camera still doesnt work.
Also I have tried replacing the camera mod with the original camera which i renamed camera.apk.bak, this too doesn't work, same result as above when selecting 'install' through root explorer.
Aby ideas? Could really do with getting my camera working, even if it is just the standard one.
Hmmm..
Not entirely sure what may have gone wrong here...
Are you sure that the hacked camera.apk is compatible with the ROM your using?
As for reinstalling the original, if replacing it (after correctly renaming back to camera.apk) doesn't work then you may need to wipe/reset...
If the hacked camera.apk is compatible with your ROM then the easiest thing to do is swap these files over in the actual ROM zip itself before putting it on your SD card and flashing it.

Thanks again for the reply
I have no idea what ROM I have or whether it is compatible. looking in my phones setting it does have a number ending in KG3, I think is a ROM number I have read about on this forum?!
After backing up my images/messages using KIES, what would be the best way to wipe/reset. Does 'restoring to factory settings' using the phones menu actually reset the program files?
Alternatively should I reset it through KIES (if thats even possible).
I think I would end up messing more things up if I tried to swap the files over in the zip file! So will just leave it if its not compatible with my ROM.
I have installed a new rom (ke7) and installed the hacked camera. The camera icon disappeared again but this time the camera WILL work if i access it through the 'gallery'.
So now all I need to do is work out how to create a camera shortcut onto the homescreen and app menu. Any ideas???

I remember downloading this and saving it when I still had the SK4G. It works great, just replace the update.zip on the / of your sdcard to use. Click the THANKS button if you D/L'ed/Used/Referred To/So on...
Just because of the nature of this mod, I cannot and will not be held responsible for any mishaps to your devices and or any of its accessories (SDCards) that in this weird world of ours may just happen. This should not discourage you to use it, just saying.. You break it, You fix/replace it.

Make sure you guys are extracting the the zip and putting the extracted recovery into the system/bin, not the whole zip.
You can also use the search and find where I reposted sduvicks fakeflash utility. It will install CWM for you.

replace the update.zip on the /root of the SD. No Odin required. Rename to update.zip, and place it straight on your SD.
That did not work until after I rooted it using RageAgainstTheCage
Re-upped by me here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?hn5ikyt6xpn8d9x
After doing that, then it allows the update.zip to work without failing signature check.
EDIT: Then I also used SuperOneClick to shell-root.

Ok guys the actual problem here is that there is a file missing that you need to push through to your "/system/bin" folder in your SK's root directory.
The missing file is the custom "recovery" binary file that krylon360 created. After doing so, either by ADB pushing the file or copy pasting it with a root file manager, you may boot into recovery then run the 'reinstall packages' command in the stock recovery. This in turn loads the new recovery.....
ALWAYS CHECK YOUR MOUNTS IN CUSTOM RECOVERY. It will save you an accidental pain in the ass. Trust me.
Mounts should look as follows:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-unmount /cache
-mount /data
-mount /sdcard (this sometimes says it is mounted-- not important)
-unmount /system (MOST IMPORTANT. IF IT DOES NOT READ AS THIS SAYS- THEN FIX THAT AND MOUNT IT BEFORE ANY BACKUPS OR WIPES. YOU WILL GET STUCK IN THE SCRIPT)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I will see if I can host the file in my Dropbox. As for the help, it is available in many older posts already. But a hitting that thanks button couldn't hurt ;D

I would like to say thanks to you all helping out with this. My lack of signing in here has to do with me not even having an Android-powered device anymore. This update.zip will wipe your /cache and /data/dalvik-cache and /preload/symlink/system/app's automagically.
Keep calm as it is extracting and be patient on reboot and enjoy...
This is entire /framework, /system/app and /preload/symlinks only, nothing removed so file size is beefy at 405MB. Also included Books and Videos .apk's from CSC in case they weren't already there.

I have downloaded your Rom and had a look it it before to flash. I saw that there is no /lib, no /bin, no /xbin and no /etc folders.
Is it intentional? Without the jb libs some apps like let's say Google now won't work. Not that I am a fan of Google but I mean, are you sure that it's ok to flash this Rom?
You are supposed to flash OVER stock ROM. Quite simple really. It is not intended to be a stand alone ROM. I maybe should have made that more clear, edited OP now. Thanks.
Some people think there is slight improvement by deodex/zipalign,
It does help theming/mods, as .odex editing is a pain, I have tried tab UI Mod using odex and it doesnt work, However after deodex I can mod things like Tab UI fairly easy.
Thats the main reason I deodexed these this time, I had to have Tab UI.
I see, so I will have too download stock jb first.
Ok, I 'll do it tomorrow and then I'll report here, because now I'm busy with other stuff.
Thanks for deodexing the Rom, it will save me some time!
Works fine. Thank you.

I am rooted. Actually I found a way to do it, I just unzipped your Rom, removed what I didn't need, then repacked it and flashed it.
But in the preload/Internal_SdCard/Samsung folder there are many other unnecessary files like images, sounds and video.
How can I delete them? Because all together they weight like 90 mb..
If youre rooted, grab a real file explorer like root explorer mount system r/w and just delete
Otherwise you might try adb or even terminal, but I suggest a file explorer.
Agree, they are total dead weight.

Strange, my every day file explorer can delete files in data and system but didn't manage to mount rw preload. So I followed your advice and used another one. And I deleted everything of course.
Thanks!
Apart from that the Rom is nice, much better than ics. I had to remove the usual bloatware, more than 150 apks, but that's another story
installed p6210 version on my p6211 and i got once freez, maybe cuz cpu was really in use (downloading, surfing in net) hmm how u think, i will write if this happen again. anyway thanks kris i hope u will build multi window mod too good luck
If the guys over at TAB 2 forums (current WIP) make any progress and have good info/documentation, I'll give it a shot.
Really liking PA (4.2.2) though

[Q] Help? Accidently deleted People APK?

Hey guys,
I think I accidentally deleted the people system APK?! I can no longer save contacts. Wondering what the best way to fix this issue would be without flashing back to stock rom. I am currently rooted and running stock 4.4.2 KK, but I have made a lot of MODS and am running the Galaxy Gear Manager for my watch which is a huge process to get running that I don't want to have to repeat.
Any help is mucho appreciated!!!
If you can find the apk somewhere install that. Otherwise flash the system.img from the factory image.

No, it'll reinstall all the system files. If you modified any of them you'll lose that but I doubt you modified any. This will only work if your bootloader is unlocked. If it isn't then you'll lose everything unlocking it.

Do you still need help with this? It's not that difficult to just pull the app and move it into the right system folder. Once you do that, change permissions to match the other apps, and reboot, you should be back to normal. I'll post the apk if you need it.

No problem. I'll have it uploaded in a bit. It's just the People / Contacts apk, right? And you're odexed or deodexed?

You can pretty much just download any ROM available, extract the Contacts.apk file (I think its in system/priv-app/) and put it on your device.

Yes, the People/contacts apk, and I am still stock, just rooted and have an unlocked bootloader, so odexed, I believe.

I tried that with one of the apk's I found, but I couldn't get it to work. I may have gotten a corrupt file though.
Here's a flashable zip in attachment (wipe Dalvik cache just in case) for Contacts.apk (with the .odex file)...
You still have ContactsProvider.apk?

He might not be in a situation where he can download a large file like a complete rom. He did mention being at work. Anyway, these should work:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/9903887/Apps/Contacts.apk
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/9903887/Apps/Contacts.odex
If you are deodexed, let me know, and don't use just the apk ^ there or it will force close constantly.
Just use a file manager that has root access (ES File Manager is a good, free choice, if you don't have another) and move the app and odex file to:
/system/priv-app
Make sure to change the permissions. The 3 Read options should be checked and the first Write option. If you aren't sure, just read the permissions of another app in that folder and match it. Then just reboot and should be back to normal.

Awesome!, thanks. The only thing I see in my app/system directory that pertains to contacts is the "GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk" I will be attempting to get this fixed when I get home in a couple hours.

You need to change the permissions. If you didnt do that, then it wont work. es0tericcha0s explained it in his last post

Dropped those 2 files into the correct /system/priv-app, changed permissions, still nothing? What am I missing?
