[Q] Galaxy S2, installing camera hack by potatoman - General Questions and Answers

Hi all,
Apologies for such a newbie question. I can assure you I have been searching for a couple of hours trying to find the answer but have had no luck.
I have a Galaxy S2 and would like to install 'Potatomans' camera hack to record video at a higher bitrate.
I have followed steps to 'root' the phone which has worked fine but I am having trouble installing the camera hack....
Firstly, I can't rename camera.apk using 'File Expert' (Error: 'could not rename') and there is no option for me to press 'mount' in the top right. (I heard this mentioned as a solution for the problem while searching). So how do I rename camera.apk?
Secondly, When 'Potatomans' instructions say 'copy the file over to system/app' does this mean using a client like Kies or SuperOneClick? As I downloaded the .rar file on my laptop but not sure how to get it into system/app on the S2.
Many thanks,
George

Use "root explorer" to copy your original camera.Apk to a safe location then replace it with the hacked one.
or read up on ADB and use that method.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply (thanks button clicked!)
I have done that but i cannot get it to work, the icon disappears after replacing camera.apk, it has also dissapeared from the applications menu.
When i click on camera.apk (in root explorer) and select 'install' it says 'application not installed' and camera still doesnt work.
Also I have tried replacing the camera mod with the original camera which i renamed camera.apk.bak, this too doesn't work, same result as above when selecting 'install' through root explorer.
Aby ideas? Could really do with getting my camera working, even if it is just the standard one.

Hmmm..
Not entirely sure what may have gone wrong here...
Are you sure that the hacked camera.apk is compatible with the ROM your using?
As for reinstalling the original, if replacing it (after correctly renaming back to camera.apk) doesn't work then you may need to wipe/reset...
If the hacked camera.apk is compatible with your ROM then the easiest thing to do is swap these files over in the actual ROM zip itself before putting it on your SD card and flashing it.

Thanks again for the reply
I have no idea what ROM I have or whether it is compatible. looking in my phones setting it does have a number ending in KG3, I think is a ROM number I have read about on this forum?!
After backing up my images/messages using KIES, what would be the best way to wipe/reset. Does 'restoring to factory settings' using the phones menu actually reset the program files?
Alternatively should I reset it through KIES (if thats even possible).
I think I would end up messing more things up if I tried to swap the files over in the zip file! So will just leave it if its not compatible with my ROM.

I have installed a new rom (ke7) and installed the hacked camera. The camera icon disappeared again but this time the camera WILL work if i access it through the 'gallery'.
So now all I need to do is work out how to create a camera shortcut onto the homescreen and app menu. Any ideas???

[Q] USB Debugging Widget

I have an AT&T Tab and thus need to periodically enable USB debugging to use the Side Load Wondermachine app. Stinks navigating thru the menus to enable / disable. I've searched the market but can't seem to find a widget that would handle toggling this as needed. Anyone know of one out there?
Not sure why you wouldn't just leave debugging enabled (you can always mount usb via the notification bar), but you can create a shortcut to the Development settings page using LauncherPro (the activity is under Settings->Development).
Thank you! I actually did not know you can have it selected all the time. I just tried it and it worked! I was use to have it unselected such that it would prompt me for either mass storage, Kies, or media. Since I only use it for Mass storage it works fine. Thanks again!
Why not just allow from market? Sure the options not there, but if you edit the settings.db from /dbdata/databases/provider-settings you can enable install_from_non_market.
It's what I did.

Hmm? Where exactly do you find this file? I searched via Astro File Explorer on the whole Tab and did not find this file. Would love to enable this option. Please provide additional details? Is yours also an AT&T tab? Can you provide a copy of the file?

Sorry, that wasn't the exact name - I was just guesstimating. I have the AT&T Tab.
The actual path is /dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.settings/setti
ngs.db
I'm attaching the modified file. Just replace the file that's already specified in the path above with the one I'm attaching in the zip.

Ok, bear with me as I am a noob, but I am still not seeing it. See my attached screenshot. I am not seeing anything in the dbdata folder. I searched for com.android.provider.settings and the only item that comes back happens to be in my Titanium backup directory. Not sure why there and not in a folder itself. Searching for settings.db results with nothing.
Ok, never mind I figured it out. Looks like I needed a Root Explorer app. I thought Astro or ES File Explorer would show me everything but I was wrong. Downloaded a root explorer app and now I can see the file. Will backup and replace mine and see how it goes.
Thanks
Update: Excellent this works! I actually didn't use your file as I was concerned there may be other setting that were different. I was comparing the changes and noticed that my settings file already had the change you mentioned. I remember doing this via SuperOneClick root tool; however never bothered to try it. Duh! Well it works. This now in combination with dropbox is excellent. I can simply copy the file to my dropbox folder, select and install it on the tab. Works Awesome! Thanks for mentioning this to me; probably would have never thought to try it on my own. Thanks again.

[Q] Is it ok to delete apk files after installation? Please read further.

Hi. I just found out that apk files are kept in the device after installation of the app.
I just recently downloaded a file explorer app and I found out that the apk files of the free games which I downloaded and installed from android market are kept in this folder:
/mnt/asec (I'm using Samsung Galaxy Ace)
There are individual folders for each game, and in each folder are a lib folder and the apk file. For example:
Fruit Ninja folder (which is found in mnt/asec folder) contains a lib folder and an apk file.
Fruit Slice folder (which is also found in mnt/asec folder) contains a lib folder and an apk file.
My question is, is it ok to delete these apk files? Will the games still work?
Also, can I send these apk files to someone else via bluetooth so they may download the apps without having to visit android market?
yeah you can delete the apk file after installing any app for it to still function, I do it all the time. Yes you can send the apk file to your friend so they can install it. If you're still cautious, try doing a trial run with one apk file...send it to your friend first, then delete, see if it works.
The .apk files are like setup files for windows. Once installed, you don't need the apk, especially if you are backing up with Titanium or similar backup program.
follow up question
Hi. Thanks guys.
Is everything from the android market ".apk"? Is it possible that some have a different extension? I downloaded a dictionary app, I can't be sure but I think it's a .zip file.
Thank you.
pakattack
I tried to delete the apk file. It cannot be deleted.
However, I copied it to my sd card, uninstalled the app, re-installed it using the one already in my sdcard, and it installed just fine.
I still want to be able to delete the apk file that is in the system though (/mnt/asec).
Any ideas or do I just have to deal with it?

I don't know why. I'm using ES File explorer
not sure if this works but have you tried unmounting the sd and delete?

Also, and I don't mean to veer out of topic (this question is often ignored in Q&A forum), if I use Odin to upgrade my stock firmware instead of using Kies, will it erase all my data? I have a feeling it will...

Yes, you can delete the APK after installation. But the APKs in /system/app/ need to stay where they are to function appropriately

[Q] How to get gapps-jb-xxx.zip file under JB

I just installed the latest JB file from CM10, as announced on the site. The installation went smoothly, and without any problem. However, in the instructions provided, there was a link to the Google Apps for this version, named gapps-jb-20120717-signed.zip. I also downloaded the file, and it is also put under /sdcard on my tablet. But I can't install this zip file. I have CWM version 5.8.3.1 installed, which seemed to work fine with this CM JellyBean. I am getting an error message about the zip file when trying to install the Google Apps file mentionned above. On the announcement page with the links to download the files, they only give the links to the two -signed.zip files. I assumed that both zip files should be installed the same way, but it appears they are not. Can anyone help me ?
NB: I use the Samsung Docking station/keyboard. Anyone had any issue with this before ?
Thank
Extract the apk's from the zip folder and install them normally! Few apps won't install this way. Put those apk's in "system/app" and change the permission to rw-r--r--
Reboot your phone and the apps should be there!
Sent From My Galaxy SL Running CM9
Bad file
Although the file was pointed properly in the page, the actually downloaded file had a mad MD5 checksum, which was not displayed on the download link, only on the download page. I also noticed that after restarting, I had a strange display, where instead of having the default green wallpaper, I was having lines of random color bars. Another reboot, and it now seems to be fine again.
I also mentioned that I have this Samsung keyboard that attaches to the tablet, and has a replication port. The keys on the top, like Back, Home, etc, seem to work only half the time. More testing will be required on this.
Good Idea !

That's an idea, and I will also look at this. I guess this is what will give me the Google Apps program so I can re-download and/or reinstall the programs that I used to have under HoneyComb 3.2.
Thanks. I will try this too. :

So go to homescreen click left most bottom button which is settings then find applications then enable non market apps and you should see the right most tab is sd card rowser yay!:cyclops:
Snif I thought I had it all figured out apparently that sd slot was just for programs installed on the sd not to browse the sd for apk's to install, still need someway to execute .apk's without market/play playing around with the stock wifi I found out that it was not connecting and needed a push so eventually market worked and wallah problem solved! Imagine other peeps might not have this problem so anyone with a solution would be awesome still!!!

Accidentally deleted bluetooth

I accidentally deleted bluetooth. I flashed(?) the stock recovery found in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/pure-xl/general/twrp-recovery-root-blu-pure-xl-allview-t3269447 and had no luck. I also tried factory resetting it. Any ideas on how to get it to work again? Whenever I try to enable bluetooth I get the "Bluetooth share has stopped working" error.

Do you mean you uninstalled one of the Bluetooth apps in System > Advanced Settings > Apps > All?
If so, please use some sort of root explorer app (you have to be rooted first) to navigate to either /system/app/Bluetooth or /system/priv-app/Amigo_Bluetooth and install whichever .apk that appears to be not installed. I believe this should fix your issue.

Interesting.
I've uploaded my /system/app/Bluetooth folder here. Could you please download that, extract the folder inside to somewhere, and either:
Push the folder via adb using the command adb push Bluetooth /system/app/ while your command prompt/terminal is in the same directory where you extracted the "Bluetooth" folder (cd DRIVE:\your\directory\path\Bluetooth (Windows) or ~/your/directory/path/Bluetooth (Linux) ).
or
Transfer the extracted "Bluetooth" folder to either your microSD or a USB Drive, plug it into your phone and move the folder to /system/apps using your root file explorer app.
Finally, install the Bluetooth.apk inside (which I'm assuming is the one you uninstalled since it is missing).
Let me know how it goes, thanks!

Can you check again? Make sure you go to your system folder from your phone's root directory. It should contain almost all of the default apps installed on your phone when it came out of the box (with the rest of it being in priv-apps).
I have the exact same problem as the OP - I tried downloading the said file but my phone says the file is corrupt - can someone please send an updated version?
Same problem, file corrupt.
Bluetooth got erased because the system detected that the app was sending sms by itself (or so it said) and thus deleted it. I have the same problem as the one above, the file seems to be corrupt and can't install the .apk
Please, if there is another way to solve this say so.
Same problem...
I have the same problem as above, my phone detected the SMS permission and said it might cost you money and recommend an uninstall. I never realised I would be able to uninstall Bluetooth without being rooted but it did it anyway - maybe it's an android bug?
Anyway, I tried downloading your Bluetooth.apk and reinstalling but it said file corrupt.
Any help would be much appreciated! Sounds like this is a bug that's been going around...

following this thread will allow you to reload the factory rom to default settings, including all factory apps and files. this is a "OEM reset"
to the fullest, bringing phone back to factory sent condition. (be prepared to do a few ota updates when done)

I dont know yet if a simple apk via adb could fix the problem here instead of flashing the complete device
Fixed
Hey, I had a look elsewhere and found a forum on the Lenovo website (can't post link here), hopefully this will work for you too.
Basically you want to go to Settings>Apps>Reset app settings and that'll do the trick.
Good luck!
