I've been noticing some weird behavior in the stock browser on my Nexus S. I'll be browsing a site, and when I click a link on the current page I'm on, I see the progress bar at the top load and then finish. However, the browser stays at the current page and doesn't go to the link I click. I've noticed that by scrolling all the way to the top of the current page, I can get it to advance and go the the page I clicked on. This doesn't happen all the time, but when it does it's pretty annoying. It seems to happen pretty frequently when browsing the forums here actually, and other text-heavy sites (usually forums).
Anyone else experiencing this issue or is it just me? Maybe there's some sort of setting I'm missing? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
First off if you spend any time at all on xda on your phone you should download the free app. It makes forum browsing hundreds oftimes easier. Also what rom are you using?
Sent from 1.5GHz CM7 Nexus S.
Ya the xda app is probably a good idea. I'm just on the stock rom w/ root, stock kernel also.
Is it possible that the link you've clicked has opened in another browser window in the background?
Hit menu and windows and see what's opened.

to avoid this you should FC the browser, and start it again

Don't know if its just my transformer or something I have installed but trying to browse or login to this website is really really slow, especially if I have a few other tabs open?
Nope it's everyone, not just you. It's the same in any browser i've tried on the pad. No idea why.
Thanks for that glad its not just me. Also now getting problem when trying to log into the Nationwide site in that I can get any of the drop down boxes to work at all. They used to work. Just trying a reboot then going to try a different browser.
it's not just tegra 2 or honeycomb. gingerbread on my old nook color, froyo on my galaxy tab, and gb on my evo. seems to be an android problem. my guess has been that the antialiasing of the type is done by CPU instead of gpu and causes the dreadful performance. works fine on my iPad though.
Well just loaded Dolphin HD and so far its much better on here than the stock browser, will see how it goes.
Switch to XDA classic theme at the bottom left should fix the lag issues.
Also there is a problem to press search and when you want to type something it just closes, not the browser only the search part,
And loading a XDA Page on your pc is also laggy it always takes some time to load, i think
its because it needs to check all the thankyou's, time and new posts etc,

Installing AdAway from the Market to block ads helped speed up the page load times for me.
Am i the only one here suffer from checker box browsing issue? For those who don't know what it is. Is when you load a webpage they load box by box as you scroll down. Was there some setting i miss? I tried factory reset and it still doesn't solve anything. This really bug me because knowing that the TF is quite powerful in it's own way. But when using the stock browser it made it feel really cheap. Opera mobile on the other hand is way faster when rendering webpage. But since i have all my bookmark synced in the stock browser that made it my preferred browser. Just wondering if anyone else have this issue as well.
I have the same issue. I turned off opengl rendering and it fixed it, but scrolling is much less smooth.
I have the same issue, after receiving the Android 3.2 update. 3.1 was better for me. It has stated that 3.2 was suppose to fix this white box loading problem, but it caused me the problem instead. So I'm hoping the next update will fix it soon in the coming days for the U.S. on 8/23/11. 3.2 is such a buggy release.
As for how to disable OpenGL rendering? I don't think there is such option under any factory setting? Are you rooted legoman666?
to disable opengl you have to type about:config in the browser URL. Nothing will show up on the webpage. But just go back to your browser setting and the debug option is listed there. Yeah i really hope they fix this issue soon. I don't even feel like using the TF anymore because of this.

I believe I followed the instructions correctly. But I do not see the OpenGL option listed, nor a debug option within Settings on the stock browser.
lol my bad i mean type about:debug then go to setting. You should see the debug option. Sorry been using a couples other browser and got the command mixed up. Disabling openGL will cause some issue when loading webpage with flash.
this is such a huge annoyance I wonder why you don't see more complaints? Its buggingthe hell out of me!
I use Opera Browser and get nearly zero blockiness, however it is about time Asus got off their ass and fixed this issue once and for all!
Does opera work with flash?
And yes Asus needs to address this issue big time since most users are on the web 90% of the time!

Yes flash works fine on Opera.
yeah i'm no longer using the stock browser. Switched to opera and so much faster. Just wish mouse scrolling work with it hehe. I can't believe we need to rely on third party software to enjoy web surfing. I thought tablet are meant for web surfing. Surely this is not the case with the TF stock browser.
Lets just admit the TF is a pretty good device. Except for the stock browser. The longer I use it the more I hate it. I honestly don't know why I keep using it other than it's familiar. Maybe if someone just removed it from the rom I would be forced to use something else
I agree. The device itself is awsome. I love playing old school emulator games using my ps3 controller. But when i want to surf the web. I tend to move to my desktop for that job. Hell even my samsung galaxy s does a better job. That's how much the stock browser had turned me off and not to mention when i want to post here. The keyboard lag is ridiculous. Can't surf and can't type. Definitely a pretty damn let down for a dual core device.
i sent a complaint to Asus. Lets see if we get a responce!

well Asus steered me back to Google for the issue! I filed a bug report on Google this time!
Hahaha thanks markimar for getting on their ass about this issue. Hope we get a solution for this problem soon.

Choppy browser
Ok so from what I read the checker box browsing, slow keyboard typing and all are not exclusive to my device. I got my TF a week back and I tried different browsers (Stock, Dolphin, Opera) and on different roms (Prime and Revolver) and all were choppy like hell.
it was worst in case of facebook and endgadget pages which are quite long pages and what I saw was plain dissapointing, slow, checker boxes and the fact that it keep loading the whole page if I scroll up and down or zoom in and out!
Edit: ok so idid the "open gl rendering" uncheck and now the stock browser doesnt do checker box and its quite ok,could be smoother but its wayyyy better than before!
I just emailed Dolphin Browser HD support for a problem I'm having. I figured I might as well post on XDA and see if anyone else has a solution or a decent workaround. I have Googled this problem a bit but have come up empty-handed. Anyways, since I'm lazy/not feeling well, I'll just copy and paste the email I just sent to Dolphin Browser HD support.
-------------------------------
Hi,
I love your browser and it is my default browser on my Nexus S. My phone is NOT rooted and I bought it from Canada's Rogers Wireless. The problem I'm having is that when I go to some sites that as soon as the page for the article finishes loading, I can no longer scroll on that page to actually read the article.
Here's an example article: http://io9.com/5872558/parasitic-flies-turn-bees-into-zombies-before-wiping-them-out-completely
If I copy this URL and post it in Firefox or Opera for Android, the page loads fine and I have no problem scrolling.
If I prevent the page from fully loading, I can scroll. But this usually means pictures and other content won't load (but I'm able to read the article because text always loads first).
If I use the add-on called "Desktop Toggles" to toggle onto desktop mode, the page looks very messed up and I am often not able to read it.
Like I said, I love your browser, but I've had this problem for a long time with previous versions and am just about hitting the breaking point. Is there any way around this problem? Are you working on a fix (as far as I know it's not an uncommon problem)? I'd really rather not switch browsers.
Also, one of the "fixes" that people recommend (I've Googled the problem) is to zoom in or out of the page to enable scrolling. The problem is, for a page such as the example article above, zooming isn't an option as the page is in a mobile format.
I am using Dolphin Browser HD version 7.2.1
Please help/advise.
I've had this problem too, the only fix per se is to reload the page. Sometimes even if it's not a mobile page I can't zoom in/out.
Hello, you can try to use Dolphin Browser HD version 7.3.0 from Android Market. I think the new version will be better. If you also have this problem, you can contact support email: [email protected]
Yeah, I've tried version 7.3.0. I still have the same problem and I emailed support (after they replied to my first email) to tell them so.
Hi, i knew, this thread is pretty Old, but i have exactly the same Problem with my Galaxy Nexus.
I'm in touch with the Support team.
Any advise on this issue?
Uh, i have absolutely no problem with this site and browser combo, jb btw, you sure that ur browser is up to date?
Hey guys just recently got my AT&T One X, and I am having this annoying "problem" on my browser. Most of the times when I leave the browser then I go back in it it refresh the page instead of staying like when I left the page. This happen on my iPhone when I have to many tabs open or runs too many apps. Most of the apps on my ONE X are not running and coming back from the lock screen and going into the browser the "page" refresh by itself. Pretty annoying for me plus it uses more data. Just wondering if anyone is having this issue. I also tried the "Dolphin browser" and it happen on this browser too.
On a side note I have the Galaxy Note GT7000 and the above issue rarely happen, but on the ONE X this issue happens let say 7 out of the 10 times do something or go back to the browser.
What browser are you using? This happens for me as well but only in chrome beta, I assumed it was a chrome software problem. When I use dolphin HD this does not happen.

It's not a browser issue but multitasking. Apparently when we multitask on the one x it refreshes the apps. I don't know if this is a feature or a bug.

The real issue is the one x has murdered multitasking somehow. I use 3 apps. email, chrome (or internet), and mail. sometimes another or 2. after a few minutes the one x kills those processes and when I relaunch the app is has to load. There is some VERY screwy stuff going on.

I'm glad I'm not alone, it's really bad on the One X especially with chrome. I can't answer a google talk and switch directly back without a full page refresh.
Not to mention the fact that the switcher is horribly implemented and shows almost no information.
PeterHTC said:
I, too, had the "loading" issue every time I closed an app and went back to my home screen.
Here's the solution, although, it works for MOST and not ALL people.
Go to Settings=>Developer Options, and scroll down to the section entitled "Apps."
The first entry should be "Don't keep activities."
Make sure this is UNCHECKED. If it's already UNCHECKED, check it and reboot, and then go back in and UNCHECK it and reboot.
It solved my "Loading" problem immediately..

I saw this in another thread, does anyone want to try it?
I'm guessing this is one of the ways HTC is trying to save battery life. Is this similar to how the iPhone does it?

No, it's actually worse than iPhone here.

This is actually with the stock browser. I also tried Dolphin browser and it is happening as well.
Happens to me also. It doesn't multitask at all, yesterday I was trying to type something into the phone keypad and the numbers I entered kept disappearing when I'd come back to the app. The browser reloads all the time and I downloaded every browser from the market, all of them did it. One thing I loved about wp is that tabs wouldn't reload even weeks later.

We have the same issue but some people here don't have this problem, only by using Chrome.
glad someone else noticed this.. there is almost no true multi-tasking that is happening.. this has to be a bug. I tried the developer option above, didn't change anything.
Went back to the store to play with the DEMO and tried all 3 phones and the problem is there. This is a big software issue, to me is pretty annoying. It is a great phone but this is not good for me. To bad this phone can't be rooted to run a different ROM!! Dammit AT&T!!!!
Fixed the multi tasking problem a little bit and now the browser doesn't refresh as much as before.
You have to go to developers option and under apps make sure background is unchecked. If it's already unchecked, check it, restart , uncheck , restart.
Most apps won't refresh now including browser.

under developers options and apps theres a "background processes limit" but not just background that can be checked/unchecked...
Don't keep activities. That's what you have to check and uncheck.
My fault I should have checked for exact name.

yea that defaults to unchecked. and i just tried checking it, backing out, going back in and unchecking it and so far i'm not noticing any difference but we'll see what happens...
Are we absolutely sure it's downloaded again? Or is the DOM of the page simply refreshed? Meaning while minimized, perhaps everything is hidden to improve performance...Then when you come back to it, everything is put back on the page.
Do we know additional data is used and the page is completely downloaded again?
I've seen this too and it just looked like a page refresh and it loads back instantly for me. So I assumed it was purely visual (either by design or by accident). However, it could have also just as easily downloaded everything again very quickly...

well isn't the fact that games don't resume where you left them further proof that it's not actually "multitasking" its just starting the app again. it just happens in the browser's case to remember what page you were on. on an ipad for example you can have 20 games open and they all resume exactly where they were when you switch back to them... i think its a multitasking issue with either this phone or android 4.0 in general (i haven't used any other 4.0 phones, just 2.3 on back, so i'm not sure about that)
Lately my dolphin browser has been acting up after the last update. First after viewing about 5 webpages I lose my search/address bar up top. It just disappears. Usually it will appear if I hit the menu button or scroll up but now it's just gone. Even after using bookmarks it doesn't appear again. I have to close the browser completely and reload it to access it again.
Then yesterday I was replying to someone on a forum and had to edit something earlier in my reply and then I was unable to scroll down to my last would. I tried using the copy and paste arrows to scroll down but even they weren't working.
Just seems like the last update broke some things for me. I backed up the newer version before I realized it and lost my old one. This happen to anyone else.
I am having the same problem with the url bar as well.

I am frequently losing the Dolphin url/search bar and window tabs using the latest JB roms. Also, clicking on some links is failing to bring me to the link page. May have to go back to Firefox.

I switched to chrome, still have Dolphin but find myself rarely using it, ever since Google rolled out tab syncing I have stuck with chrome
I just switched from chrome to dolphin. The scrolling on chrome and zooming still choppy but the syncing is nice
I have chrome too but just always preferred dolphin. Love the bookmarks bar. I do tend to switch browses every so often though just because I have like 4.
I'm using boat browser. It works pretty good.

I used to use Boat Browser and I loved it but after an update, it went silly so I transitioned to Dolphin. What's interesting is I'm a new S3 user, coming from a Droid X2 and the same problems I'm reading about here, are the same problems I have been experiencing with my DX2.
I think perhaps I'll not re-download Dolphin this time around.
Well, I guess I you can count me in as someone who's been loosing the tabs a lot the last week or so (might be more). Usually opening any link on the current page in a new tab works to bring them back, but it's still quite annoying.
This is in a Galaxy S3 with JB.
- Stupid question maybe, but did anyone bother reporting this to the devs?
