[Q] Dolphin Browser HD scrolling - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just emailed Dolphin Browser HD support for a problem I'm having. I figured I might as well post on XDA and see if anyone else has a solution or a decent workaround. I have Googled this problem a bit but have come up empty-handed. Anyways, since I'm lazy/not feeling well, I'll just copy and paste the email I just sent to Dolphin Browser HD support.
-------------------------------
Hi,
I love your browser and it is my default browser on my Nexus S. My phone is NOT rooted and I bought it from Canada's Rogers Wireless. The problem I'm having is that when I go to some sites that as soon as the page for the article finishes loading, I can no longer scroll on that page to actually read the article.
Here's an example article: http://io9.com/5872558/parasitic-flies-turn-bees-into-zombies-before-wiping-them-out-completely
If I copy this URL and post it in Firefox or Opera for Android, the page loads fine and I have no problem scrolling.
If I prevent the page from fully loading, I can scroll. But this usually means pictures and other content won't load (but I'm able to read the article because text always loads first).
If I use the add-on called "Desktop Toggles" to toggle onto desktop mode, the page looks very messed up and I am often not able to read it.
Like I said, I love your browser, but I've had this problem for a long time with previous versions and am just about hitting the breaking point. Is there any way around this problem? Are you working on a fix (as far as I know it's not an uncommon problem)? I'd really rather not switch browsers.
Also, one of the "fixes" that people recommend (I've Googled the problem) is to zoom in or out of the page to enable scrolling. The problem is, for a page such as the example article above, zooming isn't an option as the page is in a mobile format.
I am using Dolphin Browser HD version 7.2.1
Please help/advise.

I've had this problem too, the only fix per se is to reload the page. Sometimes even if it's not a mobile page I can't zoom in/out.

Hello, you can try to use Dolphin Browser HD version 7.3.0 from Android Market. I think the new version will be better. If you also have this problem, you can contact support email: [email protected]

Yeah, I've tried version 7.3.0. I still have the same problem and I emailed support (after they replied to my first email) to tell them so.

Hi, i knew, this thread is pretty Old, but i have exactly the same Problem with my Galaxy Nexus.
I'm in touch with the Support team.
Any advise on this issue?

Uh, i have absolutely no problem with this site and browser combo, jb btw, you sure that ur browser is up to date?

Yet another browser issue

Am i the only one here suffer from checker box browsing issue? For those who don't know what it is. Is when you load a webpage they load box by box as you scroll down. Was there some setting i miss? I tried factory reset and it still doesn't solve anything. This really bug me because knowing that the TF is quite powerful in it's own way. But when using the stock browser it made it feel really cheap. Opera mobile on the other hand is way faster when rendering webpage. But since i have all my bookmark synced in the stock browser that made it my preferred browser. Just wondering if anyone else have this issue as well.
I have the same issue. I turned off opengl rendering and it fixed it, but scrolling is much less smooth.
I have the same issue, after receiving the Android 3.2 update. 3.1 was better for me. It has stated that 3.2 was suppose to fix this white box loading problem, but it caused me the problem instead. So I'm hoping the next update will fix it soon in the coming days for the U.S. on 8/23/11. 3.2 is such a buggy release.
As for how to disable OpenGL rendering? I don't think there is such option under any factory setting? Are you rooted legoman666?
to disable opengl you have to type about:config in the browser URL. Nothing will show up on the webpage. But just go back to your browser setting and the debug option is listed there. Yeah i really hope they fix this issue soon. I don't even feel like using the TF anymore because of this.

I believe I followed the instructions correctly. But I do not see the OpenGL option listed, nor a debug option within Settings on the stock browser.
lol my bad i mean type about:debug then go to setting. You should see the debug option. Sorry been using a couples other browser and got the command mixed up. Disabling openGL will cause some issue when loading webpage with flash.
this is such a huge annoyance I wonder why you don't see more complaints? Its buggingthe hell out of me!
I use Opera Browser and get nearly zero blockiness, however it is about time Asus got off their ass and fixed this issue once and for all!
Does opera work with flash?
And yes Asus needs to address this issue big time since most users are on the web 90% of the time!

Yes flash works fine on Opera.
yeah i'm no longer using the stock browser. Switched to opera and so much faster. Just wish mouse scrolling work with it hehe. I can't believe we need to rely on third party software to enjoy web surfing. I thought tablet are meant for web surfing. Surely this is not the case with the TF stock browser.
Lets just admit the TF is a pretty good device. Except for the stock browser. The longer I use it the more I hate it. I honestly don't know why I keep using it other than it's familiar. Maybe if someone just removed it from the rom I would be forced to use something else
I agree. The device itself is awsome. I love playing old school emulator games using my ps3 controller. But when i want to surf the web. I tend to move to my desktop for that job. Hell even my samsung galaxy s does a better job. That's how much the stock browser had turned me off and not to mention when i want to post here. The keyboard lag is ridiculous. Can't surf and can't type. Definitely a pretty damn let down for a dual core device.
i sent a complaint to Asus. Lets see if we get a responce!

well Asus steered me back to Google for the issue! I filed a bug report on Google this time!
Hahaha thanks markimar for getting on their ass about this issue. Hope we get a solution for this problem soon.

Choppy browser
Ok so from what I read the checker box browsing, slow keyboard typing and all are not exclusive to my device. I got my TF a week back and I tried different browsers (Stock, Dolphin, Opera) and on different roms (Prime and Revolver) and all were choppy like hell.
it was worst in case of facebook and endgadget pages which are quite long pages and what I saw was plain dissapointing, slow, checker boxes and the fact that it keep loading the whole page if I scroll up and down or zoom in and out!
Edit: ok so idid the "open gl rendering" uncheck and now the stock browser doesnt do checker box and its quite ok,could be smoother but its wayyyy better than before!

Javascript making some website to stutter

Hi,
I have experienced some extreme stutter on some website because of Javascript poor implementation in the stock browser (and also in every Webkit browser like Dolphin HD)
for example accessing the next website (which is a very familiar website and works great on my PC has this issues): http://www.techradar.com/
As soon as I disable JS in the browser settings the scrolling start working great as usuall.
I have also ran Javascript Sunspider test and received a result of 2246ms where in my PC I have received a result of 296ms!
Does anybody else also has this issue and maybe knows how to solve it?
Thank you.
I have not tried this but using Opera may help. They have always been know for having a fast JS engine on the PC anyway.
JS has been known to cause problems with the browsers, it was the reason why they would randomly exit (not FC, just exit). I was extremely surprised to see how much faster web browsing was with JS disabled in Dolphin, but sadly we need it for most websites and there's no way around it that I'm aware of.
I have to say that when I did check the same websites in Opera I didnt experienced any stuttering so I guess that JS issues could be solved one day.
The problem is that I find Opera inferior when comparing it to Dolphin for Pad or when comparing it even to the stock browser.
Wish I could find an all-in-one browser which just would work good and I would not have to switch between browsers when opening particular websites

Maybe once firefox fully release thier android browser?
Also if you end up using Dolphin try out the Dolphin for Pad beta. It is the dolphin hd browser but made for tablets. Some people are saying it runs better than the dolphin hd so maybe it is made for tegra devices.
Firefox just looks bad. Its picture rendering abilities is awful.
I am currently using Dolphin for Pad and its a great browser but its based on the same Webkit engine so the same JS problems are still there.
Anyway I have found a way to quickly switch between browsers which helps a little. There is an app in the market called "Browser Switch" - so you can configure that when you click on share in Dolphin for Pad and choose browser switch it immediately opens opera(which does not has Webkit's JS issues) with the requested URL
You think that site is bad...try some Gizmodo's. You can switch to blog view on the main page, but if you click on to another link it reverts to their top story format.silly tablet barely works.

Which browser is the best browser, in your opinion?

I personally think opera mobile (the newest version) is the best one out there. Absolutely zero lag. Compatible with everything I throw at it. I don't understand why people insist on hating it or not using it. It's the best one out there.
I like Opera but there are some things that bug me:
- Google always shows up in mobile view, its annoying to have to always scroll down to click classic.
- The tabs system is slow, I prefer the way the stock browser has them
- You cant always go back to the start page, most of the time you have to open a new tab instead of being able to use the speed dial.
The new Dolphin HD is nice but I don't like not having back and forward buttons, and that you have to scroll back to the top of the page to type in a URL. In the stock browser all you have to do is click the tab and the buttons show.
I don't like the blocks that happen in the stock browser when scrolling, but I really love the quick controls. It generally seems less buggy than the other browsers as well.
Opera actually almost is the best browser but on some pages they never load fully & on some pages even with flash enabled some things show up as a big arrow that would play just fine on Dolphin Hd.Opera is the only browser i can check my gmail just as i could on my desktop..Dolphin HD is lacking there.Opera needs another update to fix the bugs.Lastly why on earth does everything load on Opera halfway (for instance pictures). If you hold on the pic it will give you the option to "Reload image in full quality" !!! Wtf..how about loading that way in the first place lol...I'll stick with Dolphin Hd for now.

Weird. Nothing has shown up as mobile view for me for a month now. I think you need to play around more with settings.

You can solve this by setting the User Agent to Desktop in Advanced settings.

Look like you have Opera Turbo enabled, which means that Opera loads the pages though a proxy server which compresses pages for faster loading over slow connections. This will speedup your loading over slow connections, but if you've got a fast connection you should not use it.
You can disable Opera Turbo in the settings.
I find the Dolphin for Pad browser very good:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.dolphin.browser.pad&feature=search_result
None
The day I can go to vimeo.com or youtube.com and play an HD 720p video without having to maximize the screen (without ANY stutter) is the day I'll name a best browser. As it stands, none to me are the best. They all have flaws with flash.
Argh nevermind the part about "reload image in full quality ".I see what it is now lol.Dolphin for pad needs an update bad!!!

I like dolphin for pad. Opera is not bad, but for me it's a bit slow to start showing the site, and some site I use quite a lot has a little bug in the render. Also, I don't like the tab system.
You can go to the top in Dolphin HD by using the gesture button on the bottom left. Just make an upside down V and it'll bring you right up.
All the browsers need to add some better swipe gestures however...like Atomic Browser for ios. It has 2 Finger swipe left or right to switch between tabs or 3 finger touch to maximize screen. They're customizable as well.
Goodintentions why dont you put a poll on this thread of the top ten browsers?
Opera
dolphin
skyfire
miren
uc
mozilla beta
etc etc

I have to say opera mobile hands down. Not to be confused with opera mini. They are 2 different browsers...especially in terms of performance. But yes, opera mobile is an absolutely fantastic browser both on my nexus s and transformer. Blows every other browser out the water. Very fast UI. Very smooth scrolling and zooming. Flash content etc. It must have deep gpu / hardware acceleration i think. It behaves like a dream. What every browser should be.

It does, and it's the only browser to do so (which is why scrolling is silky smooth on Opera and crap on everything else). Even the stock Android browser doesn't have it yet...
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2370756,00.asp#fbid=7tE7TmefXx2
The browser will be available for all versions of the Android OS. New features in this version of Opera Mobile include hardware acceleration and pinch-to-zoom. According to the company, hardware acceleration leverages the power of the mobile phone to allow for increased speed, faster navigation, and more fluid interaction with the phone. It also makes possible full pinch-to-zoom functionality for all sites.

I do have it set to the desktop user agent, and Opera does the same thing on my phone. Typing a search in the URL or search bar always brings up the mobile version. I have gone through and changed the user agent in the about:config page without any luck either.

Spoken like a true ipad user. Complain rather than try to find a solution.
The search bar is a mobile search bar, yes. Would it kill you to not use it? Just put google homepage (the desktop one) in your favorite and go there whenever you want to search for something.
Many of us have already written to opera about this. I'm confident they will fix this in upcoming updates.
To me, this is one drawback that is easily avoidable. With built in hw acceleration and functions... screw it.
Just don't use opera at all. If you prefer the lagginess of other browsers, be my guess. Don't ever try to go around anything. Just complain.

Excuse me? Im complaining because I don't like a bug that lots of other people have reported? Ive tried every "solution" in the book to try and fix it but none work. I like Opera and have been using it for a year but it doesn't mean the mobile bug is any less irritating.

Already told you the solution. Its the same one I use. Just put Google homepage in favorite and go there when you want to search. How hard can it be?
I use the stock browser because it provides what I want (tabs, chrome bookmark sync) and performs reasonably enough for browsing; I still remember surfing at 3.4K/s .
Opera is what I use on my phone because it seriously kicks the Froyo stock browser to timbucktu on performance. I do think Opera Mobile's UI is much better suited to a tablet than the HC stock though.
Opera mobile is indeed faster and smoother in terms of scrolling compared to all the other browsers. UI response is also very quick. However, Opera has serious issues with Flash. Opera would crash on my TF for some flash content and flash videos are really slow to load and would stutter while Dolphin HD and even stock would play much smoother.
I like Opera, its my usual web browsing browser. But if I need flash content, I switch to Dolphin HD.

ICS Browser "tiling".. or just plain slow?

Don't know if it's necessarily a Nexus S ICS issue but does anyone else find that the ICS browser has a really annoying rendering issue? A page can be fully downloaded but it doesn't actually display in the browser until you wait a few seconds or move the page around.
If you move the page around, there might be a block or two that shows up but then other blocks of the page don't.
This is really the only issue I have with the ICS browser as I love the interface. But it's a pretty big issue.
Opera displays pages smoothly and looks great but I hate the interface
I get this as well and its rather frustrating, the really bizarre thing is when you press the page overview button (where you can close a browser page) and you can see the page has loaded.
I've pretty much given up on the stock ICS browser because of this. Even native Google websites like Google News are painful to browse.
I have since moved onto Opera Mobile permanently.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Same thing happens to me. In several ROMS and ICS Stock.
On stock browser and Dolphin HD. Opera Mobile is ok.
opera mobile is best for me , I tried all popular browsers from market..
i use it cca 1 yeat , on iphone 2g and nexus s..
solved
Try using an other scheduler and or governor.
4.0.4 does it much faster so its not noticeable as much as it was when I had 4.0.3.
Anyone else with this issue should give the new Chrome beta a try. It doesn't exhibit this behavior at all and works pretty well in general

[Q] ICS and javascript

Since upgrading to ICS several days ago, two websites that I frequently visit on my tab are malfunctioning - seems to be javascript-related and somewhat browser independent. The sites are pcworld.com and nbcnews.com. In general, on pcworld.com, links don't work. Nothing happens when I tap them (they do highlight in light blue - that's all). On nbcnews.com, which forces the mobile site using some browsers, the links to stories and the down arrow to "show more stories" don't work. Both of these situations (pcworld and nbcnews) exist for the stock browser, Dolphin, and Chrome (also installed and tried Maxthon and Skyfire just to check - same issue there), but both sites work fine in Firefox and Opera. However, if I disable javascript in Dolphin, pcworld.com works fine, and I can link to stories on nbcnews. The "show more stories" in nbcnews.com still doesn't work but the screen behaves a bit differently when I tap it. Chrome, by the way, pretty much goes non-functional if I disable javascript in it - none of the browser control buttons such as bookmarks, recent sites, etc. work at all.
Pcworld was definitely working before going to ICS. I think nbcnews had gotten a little squirrelly. My conclusion that it's a javascript issue is based on the fact that disabling javascript restores link function to pcworld and at least to the nbcnews.com stories. Any thoughts?

I am currentlyon stock ICS DDLP5. it works fine with the stock browser. Also works with dolphin, firefox chrome and opera. No issues.
So now some people are actually getting the update from Verizon, and these websites seem to be working fine for them. I upgraded per Electron73's post. What might be different about my tab now than those who are getting upgraded by Verizon that would cause this issue?
Is it possible that the problem is that Electron73's instructions by which I upgraded to ICS result in a rooted device? I'm totally ignorant of this stuff and have no idea what possible problems could arise from being rooted. If that could be the problem, how can I unroot? I have no need to be rooted.
rooting only opening an acces to the device with administrator account... it only put 2 files to your device... one is a program to govern the root... superuser or supersu and another one is system/xbin/su binary files. that's it... to fully unroot you just need to delete this 2 files from your device.

Thanks. I've done that now. I didn't really think that would fix my problem, and it didn't.
I've read that people who got their tab updated by Verizon / Samsung (many by sending them in) have i815.07 V.LP10 / I815LP10 (note the .07) vs. the .04 that I have installed. Possible issue?

That's what I'm thinking. I wish electron could get an updated version. My wife is tired of seeing some elements on some of her favorite websites just not show up (images, links, etc). No way I'm unrooting until Verizon/Samsung get their OTA mess sorted out though.
As I mentioned, the websites that aren't working for me are failing in the stock browser, dolphin, chrome, and every other browser I've tried except Firefox, Opera, and now Puffin. Tonight I stumbled upon how to view the javascript console in the stock browser. When I view the javascript console after attempting to follow a link to an article on pcworld.com, I see a long ULR (with static.ak.facebook.com in the middle), followed by the console message "Given URL is now allowed in the Application configuration.: One or more of the given URLs is not allowed by the App's settings. It must match the Website URL or Canvas URL, or the domain must be a subdomain of one of the App's domains." there is a different message about Viewport argument value "device-width;" when I try to navigate the mobile nbcnews.com website. Pcworld works fine if I disable javascript; on the nbcnews mobile site, I can link to articles with javascript disabled but I still can't "Show more stories." Wierdly, about every 1000 tries or so (literally), a link or "Show more stories" will randomly work with javascript enabled, but only for one try.
Any ideas??
Yet another issue - hitting the back button in the stock browser, Dolphin, etc., usually doesn't take me to the previous visited webpage; it just reloads the current page (with some exceptions). If not for Opera and Firefox, my tab would basically be useless for web browsing. (Interestingly, Chrome does not have this issue even though it shares the stock browser and Dolphin's issue of not being able to follow links on nbcnews.com, pcworld.com, etc.) I like the device but am starting to wonder if I should give it up... Any idea if reverting to Honeycomb (!) would restore web browsing? HC was crap but at least I could use the browser.
Based on a little back and forth with Dolphin support and some deductive reasoning, it seems clear to me that any webkit-based browser is going to give me the same issues. I read this morning that Opera is getting ready to abandon its in-house web engine in favor of webkit. That will leave me with just Firefox and Puffin (which some say is insecure and in any case lacks a lot of basic features), neither of which I really like using.
So something seems inherently broken in webkit in the i815.04 V.LP10 version of ICS I have installed. I suppose many don't use their tablets extensively for web browsing so maybe this isn't an issue for most users, but I do browse a lot with it and now feel like my tab is "broken" (sort of the way I felt with Honeycomb that prompted me not to wait for Verizon to fix its failed update). I went so far as to buy a Nexus 7 yesterday morning, but I really didn't like the display and returned it in the afternoon.
I think in Electron73's post there was a link to a download that could be applied to return the tab to Honeycomb. Is that true, and if so has anyone tried reverting and then getting ICS through the OTA update? (It seems that people who have v.07 instead of .04 don't have the browsing problems I've been posting about.) If I reverted to Honeycomb (assuming that's possible) and couldn't get the update OTA, would Verizon / Samsung detect that it had been modified if I tried to get the update by sending it in as so many have had to do? Any other thoughts on possible fixes? Obviously I am pretty ignorant...

It seems as if my browsing issues may not be similar to what you're experiencing. What I was seeing on my wife's was images not showing up on certain shopping websites (no matter what browser she used) , and sponsored links not working in Google searches. I discovered the problem: the hosts file is NOT stock, and is set to block a lot of sites, or elements within them. I removed every entry in the file except for 127.0.0.1 localhost, and EVERY problem she was having has disappeared!

It was a bit of a PITA at first since none of my edits would stick. Finally found an app called Hosts Editor Pro in the Store. Soon as you open it up, it seems to replace the current file with a very basic one. Once I rebooted after that, I checked the contents of the file, and only the one entry was there.

So do you happen to know if she can follow links on the sites I mentioned (nbcnews.com, pcworld.com) without any problem? And go back to the previous page by hitting the back button? I think one person replied to my original question that they could not, but I'm still trying to figure out if it's some anomaly or a universal result of updating to 4.0.4 in this manner.

Tried both sites, and every action you described, and both sites work perfectly, pop-up ads and all.
When you flashed electrons build, did you use the wipe version, or not?

I tried to no-wipe first, but it hung for about a half hour, so I went back and did the wipe version.
I've given up on it. I'm giving the tab to my daughter, who won't care about a few browsing incoveniences. I went to Verizon today and bought a new one. I was nervous because I planned to return it if it wouldn't get ICS OTA and they said there would be a $70 restocking fee. But when they stuck the SIM card in and started setup, I could see that it already had ICS on it (the bright blue circle was spinning). The setup didn't look fresh (didn't start with the setup wizard or whatever it's called -- booted directly into the default homepage), even though the tab was sold as new and certainly appears to be. Also, Baseband is i815.04, not .07. My uneducated guess is that the've taken new ones in the warehouse that had Honeycomb and flashed ICS, then shipped them to the stores, so they won't have to deal with all the the returns.
