[GUIDE] Play Oregon Trail (or other DOS games) - Android Apps and Games

Over the weekend I played a old version of Oregon Trail (1992) on my laptop. It is a fun game that is much shorter than I remembered.
I wanted to see if I could get it to work on my EVO, and thought I would post how I did is so other people could try if they wanted.
First, you will need to download the game. It is considered abandonware now and is avaliable on several sites. I downloaded it HERE. Note that this is not an APK, it is the MS-DOS version. Extract the files onto your SD into a folder called "oregon". Easy enough.
Next go HERE to download Android DosBox. I downloaded the WVGA version as it matched my screen resolution. The instructions at that site show to use ADB to push the APK and the config file to your phone. I just copied both to my SD card, then used a file manager to open the APK and install it. Either way will work. The dosbox.conf file must be on the root of the SD card.
Now you may have noticed that it says on the Android DosBox website that there is no virtual keyboard support. This presented a challenge, but if you have a phone with no keyboard look in the market for WiFi Keyboard. Once you set it as your keyboard it will give you a site that you can go to on your computer that will allow you to type. You can also access the page from another phone and use that to type.
No we are ready. On your phone open aDosBox. The config file you put on the SD already is already programed to mount the SD card as the "S" drive and put you into that folder. So to run the program you need to type 2 commands. First type in "cd\oregon" and hit enter. Do not type the quotes. This will move you to the oregon trail folder you made, and the screen should now say "S:\Oregon\>". Now type "oregon" and the game will load.
Notice the screen while playing will not act like a normal touch screen. You have to pretend it is a touchpad like on a laptop. Slice your finger to move the mouse cursor over buttons you want to press, then tap to click. You can do the sliding and tapping on any part of the screen.
There were then a couple things I wanted to change. I wanted aDosBox to automatically open the game when I ran it, I didn't want to have to type any commands. To do this mount the SD card and use notebook to edit the dosbox.conf file that you put on the root of your SD card. It will be one long line. The last bit of this file after the [autoexec] tag is just like a .BAT file, it allows you to execute commands automatically. Right now it should say:
Code:
mount s /sdcard
s:
The mount command creates a virtual drive that DOS can see. The “s” is the letter that will represent the drive, and /sdcard means that the files on your sd card can be accessed there. The s: is a command that makes that drive the one you are using. We want it to open run the commands I told you above automatically, so press enter after the s: and type this:
Code:
Cd\oregon\
Oregon
While you have this file open you may want to change how fast the game runs. This is a trade off. If you make it run faster animations will skip more, but new screens will load MUCH faster. Look in the code for the “cycles=2100”. This is the number you want to change. I recommend 5000 for fast loading, and OK animations.
Save this file, and unmount the SD card. Now when you open the aDosBox app it will load right into Oregon Trail.
Lastly, The Wifi Keyboard is a bit wonky in the game. If numbers are not working or it will only type CAPS then hold shift while you type the next letter. Then delete that letter and re type. I found that worked.
I thought that I would share this so other people could try it. I think it would be better with more mouse orientated games like “Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiago.” I hope at least someone likes this.
Also, try and beat 9328 as a high score!

Nice guide. Tried to run duke3d but i got a not enough memory error

Where to download FPSece ROMS

Sorry, meant, how do i install games onto FPSece on my LG incite
Please and thank you
I seriously doubt your PDA can even handle PSX games.. let alone store more than one ROM on your Phone.. but if you really want to then i guess you should google it.
I googled it from before, but i found the game in 30 parts (Disc 1, part 1, Dis 2, Part 2, etc...)
nd they were all RAR files, so how am i supposed to install that as a ROM

The sharing of psx roms is illegal and the discussion of warez is banned on this site
EDIT: I didnt realize that talking about getting links to roms was illegal until i read the post before me so i just deleted the links
I broke down the steps just to make them easy to follow because i remember searching for a while when trying to play my first game
I assume that you already extracted teh fpsece zip file to your phone. If you didn't yet, make sure you make a new folder on your phone somewhere on the sd card and label it Fpsece, or whatever you like as long as you can locate it. When you downloaded fpsece, it should be in a zip. Extrap all of the files in the zip (yes all of them) to the folder that you created on your sd card. Once extracted, go to your phone and open up File Explorer and find the new folder you created. Next click on FPSEce.exe (it has a playstation icon). From there you should be in the main menu. Select Options, Bios, Choose bios, and select SCPH1001.BIN. Now that you have selected it, go to options, Misc, Display, and select Portrait suince you dont have a keyboard or if you have a bluetooth gaming pad, you can select Landscape.
Now to play the game, press start, and if the game ends in like .bin, .iso, .img, .nrg, .z, .bz, or .znx, press ISO and select the game. If the game ends in .psx, .exe, .elf, or .cpe, press ESE. You should be able to play the game now!
Hee hee, its Leo from VG Cats. I like their comics. Happy Holidays!
THis thread is going now where and dur to questionable material, i am closing it.

Psx4droid saves!

ok i found out what it is we need to do to use save files from other emulators or dexdrive saves on our evo's.
1st. there are many dexdrive saves located at http://www.gamefaqs.com. goto the ps1 list, select your game and then goto the tab "saves". dexdrive saves are full dumps of ps1 memory cards. these files are in .gme format and we need to convert them over to .mcr format.
then download this http://www.aldostools.org/memoryconverter.zip. it is a memory card file converter. it will not run in windows 7 64 for me. i ran it in a xp virtual machine that i have built and it worked just fine. other os's i have no clue about. when you run it, it asks you for the memeory card file. use the .gme file and then hit convert. it defaults to saving it as a bleem save game but if u click the drop down menu and select the top .mcr file, epsxe i think, and then click finished.
now connect your phone to the pc and toggel usb. go the the .psx4droid directory and copy your files here. i had allready made a save game and just renamed the new one to the one i allready had.
Dude you're the man! Thanks, this is exactly the information I was looking for. The program I used was different from yours: http://moberg-dybdal.dk/psxge/
It works on windows 7, though I can't make it save more than 1 save per memory card, so I use card 2 for the dexdrive save. Also, it saves it as a different format, I think ".mcd" but I just renamed the file "mem0002.mcr" or whatever that stock name was, and it works just fine.
Thanks again bro! The psx4droid's usefulness has definitely gone up big time!
PS save states to PSX4droid save states
This is great to use with Memory cards but I was trying to find a work around for some games which freeze at the start screen.
I was hoping to take the .psv save state I can get from a pre loaded Metal Gear Solid and then convert it to the same type of save state in psx4droid and do a quick load and see if I can skip the title screen thus enabling me to play the game from where the save state left off.
The load option freezes in MGS as well so my memory card save from my PC psx emulator does not do me any good.
Oddly enough the disc 2 seems to work fine at the menu to start and load a new game...problem being it asks you to insert disc 2 and then you are screwed. I am going to try and convert a disc 2 save of MGS and see if I can load disc 2 on my Nexus one.
I have the same problem with Parasite Eve 2 freezes as soon as it boots.
this thread is the best thing that i have ever found. i was searching how to do this all over the internet, and it was right here all along. thanks fellas!
edit: does anyone know how to change the block number of the saved games?

FpseCE 'the definitive guide'

im sick of watching videos of people who have managed to install and make this work. trawling the mass of how to videos/guides. even the official readme instructions are a waste of time. there is literally no step by step 'no jargon' guide out there for people who want to use this sofware.
i literally just want to see what this program is like. if its worth it i'll get the supporter version. ive downloaded tha cab file. installed to sd card. and ive got a fpssece 0.10 'controller' icon and a folder called psone games in my start menu. ive got a pocket iso program on my pc, my first instinct was to put a psone game in my pc and copy a file and stick it on my phone? or am i way off? my computer doesnt recognise the disk so it just spits it back out again. i realise i need a bios file as everyone keeps saying. as well as another file which needs ripping from the disc. but if i need to either download these, where from? and if i get them from a psone disc, how?
anyone fancy helping a noob? would be really nice if i could sit next to my mate at work while he's playing some "amazing" iphoney game and im loading up gran turismo......
look here

hadnt found that guide. very helpful. with a few useful tutorials linked in. ive already sorted the bios out i just need an image. like i said ive got a psone game ive been trying to rip but my drive doesnt recognise it. i may try some 3rd party software and see if that works. thanks for the link
ok. just to clear things up. now that i know where to look for info and how to complete installation etc there is a small issue. it turns out that my dvd drive, although only a year or so old is incapable of reading a psone disc. i tried it in 2 computers at work which are older (1 desktop is 7 years old!) this totalled 3 cd and dvd drives and 'gran turismo' popped up in explorer every time. its not a major issue as i'll just copy the data i need onto a usb stick and bring it home. but if anyone knows a work around for an optical drive or if there are some disks some can and cant read then can they let me know.
cheers
ok. got a bios loaded into the bios folder. got some image files of gran turismo loaded onto my sd card. now if i load the program up i get a strange interface. drop down menu at the top with all images in it. below is a list
bios
cfg
exe
memcards
plugin
skins
sstates
but no loadable game rom? ive used slysoft clone and the poket iso to get an image of a game. but ive got 5 gran turismo files. is that right?
they are
gtimage.sub - 26mb
gtimage.img - 658mb
gtimage.ccd - 773b
gtimage.img.znx.table - 2.80mb
gtimage.img.znx - 366.68mb
ive put all of these on my sd card in a sub folder. what do i do now?
ok. ive been playing and got a little further. but my actions have made me think that ive ripped the cd image wrong or something else hasnt gone right. ive moved the 5 files i mentioned from a folder on the sd card to the program files/fpsece folder on the card. this didnt work as there was stil nothing in the loader screen. i then moved them to the bios folder with the bios i downloaded. all 5 files now appear in the loader screen along with the bios. but as they are seperate files such as music and they wont load anything when i select them. i also found them in the psone folder with fpsece icons attached to them in the start menu folder (did wonder what it was for) so they partially work
my question is, what have i done wrong during the ripping/compressing stage if anything? am i supposed to have just one file to put on my sd card? if so where? some say in the fpsece folder others say anywhere. it only partially worked on my phone putting it in the bios folder. is that right?
anyone fancy helping?

the guide also says to rip the disc as a ???? file. but there are no options in clonecd to change this. just the steps in the guide walking you through cloning and the compressing. ive done it 3 times now and got the same files every time.
the pocket iso guide says to select the 'cd image' from within pocket iso. so is this 1 of the files i get after ripping or do i select all of them? how many files am i supposed to have after the disc is ripped??? and how many should i have after compression????
ok. so success. problem was slysoft clone. download was corrupted so i uninstalled and found a better copy. ripped the image. compressed. i had to put the image into the bios folder to be able to load the game but it worked. must say it runs very well. what i was more impressed was the speed at which the supported version was sent out. after playing around more i decided its not very useful having no save/load options etc.
i have a new problem now though. gran turismo the game will load.i get the sony computer entertainment screen then a black screen with a cd skipping sound. is this a setting within fpsece that i need to adjust or something to do with the phone?

[Q] GemRB-Baldur's Gate emulator/engine

GemRB. Has anyone heard of this or managed to get it to work on the Kindle Fire? I first ran into this on my Moto Atrix, and was able to get it to work, but haven't yet attempted it on Kindle yet. For anyone that doesn't know, this is the Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale/Planescape: Torment engine, and pretty much acts like a .exe file. The way that I got it to work on my Atrix was just to install it on my pc, then copy and paste it into a certain directory, minus the original bg.exe file. Any thoughts?
How have I never heard of this?! I am devoting all of my time to make this work starting ......now. I WILL have it! Keep this thread updated if you manage to get it to work'
Working
I managed to get it working! At least with IceWind Dale 2.
Bear with me........
1. Uninstall GemRb on your Fire
2. Reinstall Apk and choose to download ALL OPTIONS including the Baldurs Gate 2 Demo (the uninstall and reinstall may not be necessary but i did this to ensure that the .cfg file was over-written
3. As you can see the demo works flawlessly. That is tits!
4. open the directory from your kindle on your pc: app-data/gemrb .....blah blah so that the game files are showing, and move it to the side. We will be using this later.
THESE STEPS CAN BE AVOIDED IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH SPACE ON YOUR DEVICE TO OVERWRITE. I DID NOT
PLEASE NOTE: WE WANT TO OVERWRITE THE ORIGINAL GAME WITH THE FILES ON KF NOT VICE VERSA
5. Create a folder on your desktop and name it merge or chubbles or whatever you wish.
6. open the directory on your pc. with your completely installed game . Select ALL and copy it to merge folder. Have a cup of coffee.
7. select all and CUT the files from the Kindle directory to the merge folder and overwrite all files when asked. Have another cup of coffee because this takes a while with the KF transfer speeds.
8. Select all and COPY the overwritten files back onto the KF. At this point you should probably go pee from all that coffee and the transfer speeds, at least for me, are horrendous.
9. The only other steps are to modify a few settings in Gemrb.cfg. I DID NOT change any of the pathing or directory lookup, just the Name and initials of the game (iwd2)
This should work for the other infinity engine games, although I have yet to try them. Icewind Dale 1&2 were the only games that I did not complete in my formative years.

[App][Tablet][Beta]Help me graduate college by testing my file manager app!

Hello there!
I've chosen to work on building a user interface for file managing on android tablets for my special problem, one of my subjects this semester. So in order to graduate, I need the help of some willing testers to test out my app.
I'll admit, it's not the best file manager. Features are scarce, the code is not that optimized both in running time and in memory allocation, and there are a lot of checking that needs to be done (like when your sdcard is currently mounted in usb mass storage mode). But my focus is the user interface and not the back end, so please excuse these things.
Here's a demonstration of the features it has:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNcyT5iwLyU
Some things to take note of:
There's no up folder button, so you can't go past /mnt/sdcard when going up the directory hierarchy
if /mnt/sdcard is not your internal sdcard's default mount path, then it'll crash
When you swipe horizontally too fast to switch tabs, it does some funky stuff making one pane invisible. touch the other pane again to make it appear again.
You CAN'T cancel a copy or past operation when it has started.
Don't do stuff like copying or moving a file to the same folder it currently is in. if you move a file or folder to the same folder, it will get deleted.
Just perform normal file operations. Avoid trivial cases as mentioned above.
So here's the link for the app: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16398746/Files.apk
And here's the link for the evaluation form: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEVQeElJb3QyR05kLUN0akliV0ExbEE6MQ#gid=0
Thank you very much! I'm open to comments here in XDA so just comment ahead and please be gentle with me, it's my first app.
nice work!
I really like the ui! Its better than for ex. In astro
But: i didnt manage to go "higher" than mnt/sdcard, so i wasnt able to see my micro sd.(how) can i do that?
And: could you add a picture preview?
Maybe you could do something that the back button works?
But all in all, i like it because of the simple buttons, the drag and drop option and its really cool.
Sry for my bad english ;D
