[Q] I am a NOOB!

Just received my g tab and even though I have been reading on here quite often I was wondering a few things.
1. What is the best set up on the g for speed and dependability?
2. Can someone link the best (easiest) directions for rooting? I use computers all the time, but am unsure of the process.

I am a noob too.
Up to now, I have tried two custom roms. The first three weeks I was on Tnt lite 2.2 and I switched to Vegan b5.1 yesterday.
Step 1: install clockworkmod, then boot with power and volume up pressed together and ake some time to explore the cwm menues (volume to scroll, home to confirm and back to cancel).
You will see a backup/restore option somewhere in there: do a backup of your stock machine.
After that, you can fiddle all you want with your Tab.

Step 2: after that flashing is a breeze, I am very impressed by the latest Vegan, it configures many of the possibilities of the Tab, including the stock roms. Just dload the file, find it in sd/download, rename to update.zip and put at the root of internal sd. Turn off, power and volume up, clear cache in cwm, update from sd in cwm and voilà. Find it in gtab dev section. You will also get root from the procedure.
In between steps, you might want to install titanium backup and backup your apps any issues can be resolved afterwards by reinstalling from there. In the market or on the web and sideloaded.
I guess many other things could be said but I felt overwhelmed at times by the amount of infos so I tried to keep it simple and you can use it as a query basis for your own researches.

1. Fully charge G tab and turn it on
2. Install Titanium Backup on G tab (is this done like I would install an app on an iphone, or do I download to my PC and move it to the g tab?)
3. Backup stuff (everything)? To where? My PC?
4. Install clockwork as per instructions here (I think I'll use G tab's internal SD card)
5. Use clockwork to repartition internal SD card (2048 and 0)
6. Use clockwork to delete data and cache
7. Install Vegan 5.1 as per instructions here.
8. Install Flah and Market capability as per instructions here.
9. Install ADW launcher (not sure what this is, but it looks good on youtube). How do I install it? Is it like an iphone app installation, or...?
10. Some of the posts I've read mention a need for a file browser. Do they mean on my PC, or on the G tab? How do you get one on the G tab? Through Market?
11. Calibrate touch screen as per instructions here.

This has all been posted before as you thought.
I would not worry about backing up when you first get it as there will be nothing really on it but the stock rom.
if you goal is to load a Rom like TNT or Vegan from day one.
Root
Clockwork Mod
load Rom
and away you go.
There are directions all over the place to the above.
Once you get the rom loaded and all setup then get titanium backup installed and do a backup. Save yourself hours and pay for the pro version, it will allow you to run batch backup/restores and not touch your tablet while it runs.
Hope that helps now go read and search while you await your Gtab and have FUN! that is what it is all about.

This is my first Android device but I'm good with PC's.
Anyway, I fired it up from new installed clockwork, did the partition 2048,0 as suggested and for me installed tnt-lite and all is good. It was probably stock for about 10 minutes of its life.

For some reason I had to root first when I installed the update after the 3389 update. I think it was just me but it was just another step. Installed z4root, got root, and moved on

Just to give you an idea where I'm at.....I had no idea what 3389 is so I searched for it. Many pages came up, but they all assume a certain level of background knowledge that I don't have. Please tell me, is 3389 the ROM that comes with the G tab?
If so, why would you be updating that if you had a different ROM already installed (Vegan, TNTlite, etc)?
Other pages I've seen have said that installing Vegan or TnTlite IS rooting, whilst still other pages have said that installing clockwork mod is rooting? Is this correct?
I can't find out what rooting actually means because every page I find assumes the reader already knows what rooting is. I will keep searching for a site for android dummies (and stop wasting your time).

rooting a device is basically changing system permissions so that you have full access to read, write and manipulate all files on the device. In Linux if you are root you have total control over the system. I believe that I read somewhere that the GTab is already set so that you have total control. Other devices you would use an app like z4root and it would change the security settings so that you had root access.

hmmm....the plot thickens. Thanks Sm0k3d 0ut, I'm looking forward to confirmation of that to clear up my confusion!

Try them both, they are both great roms and you will become more comfortable the more roms you flash.

Thanks copc. I also read somewhere that backing up can be done with Clockwork. Is that true? If so, does a novice like me really need titanium backup?
Also, one more question: in case I ever want to restore to the stock ROM that the G tab comes with, do I need to do anything special BEFORE I install Clockwork and the new ROM? Or can I just change back to original no matter what I do now?
(G tab arrives tomorrow. Can't wait!)

I still haven't received my Zpad yet, so can't talk from experience. But from what I have read it seems that titanium backup backs up the apps (and maybe data?) and clockwork makes a ROM image of you Tablet (or something similar to that). So I think they are different types of backups and you should probably do both.
But I could be horribly wrong.

You are spot on, Titanium Backup allows you to back up and restore individual apps and data (you can also use it to sideload apps you have already installed on another Android device). CW will make a backup of your entire system (internal SDCard) so you can restore if something goes awry.

1,4,5,7,8, and 11 in that order will get you in business. Titanium Backup should be installed after you get Vegan installed, as there is really nothing to back up in stock. Data and cache will be deleted as part of the partitioning process (that's how I've understood it), and a file browser is already installed with the Vegan image. #9 is just fluff, ADW is a great launcher, but is not necessary to get up and running. If I recall correctly, it will install like an app - you should be able to find it in the Market.
#12 - Though it is not necessary, Root Explorer is a real handy app to have if you are going to tear around with Android's inner workings. Less than $5 on the market, but I found it worth every penny so far.
You will find many different thoughts on the process laid out above, this is just worked for me when I was starting out. The most important thing is Clockwork. Do. That. First.

I did mine (CW .8 and TNTLite) from a 256MB card, and there was still plenty of room - a 128MB card should do you fine. In fact, if you are doing it from a PC (I can't confirm for Mac as I don't have one), you can install CW off of the card, use CW to partition the tablet storage, connect the tablet to your PC, and then use CW to mount the tablet as USB storage so you can copy over the ROM image to the tablet and install.
As far as CW, use the .8 version. I have heard of problems from others using newer versions, and it seems that .8 is what the devs recommend. You can find a link to it in here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245

[Q] two apk files removed during oneclick root

hi all. new user to xda forums.
a brief history of my foray into the upgrade and root realm:
i have an samsung epic 4g. i just updated to froyo eb13 from eclair. i used the update.zip from samsung and everything went smooth without a hitch. ( i even backed up my SD card before the update to be sure i didn't lose anything on it in case i had to reformat it.)
i decided i wanted root to backup my phone so i went with the oneclick 2.5.5 procedure. i tried it on ubuntu 10.04 using the SDK but it didn't want to work. adb wasn't an issue so it was something else...i didn't bother researching why it didn't work on linux so i jumped on my windows xp sp3 machine where the root process worked without a hitch.
during the root process two apk files are removed:
/system/app/Asphalt5_DEMO_ANMP_Samsung_D700_Sprint_ML.apk
/system/app/FreeHDGameDemos.apk
so i'm on froyo eb13, i have root and everything seems ok.
i tried searching on the apk file names here on the forums but didn't see anything which really explained things for me.
questions i'm hoping someone can explain:
1. why are these files removed? is it because there isn't enough space?
(the only thing i could find was this thread but it doesn't pertain to the oneclick root process per se: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=882567.)
2. will these files be needed in the future for other 'updates'?
since my main goal was rooting to back up my phone completely including all the apk files, it seems the root process took out two before i could get them backed up. this isn't a problem as i can get the apk files from another source.

part of the joy of rooting is getting rid of some of the annoying apps that come stock on most phones from your carrier.
A lot of roms when installed will place the removed apk's in afolder on your SD card called "removed apk's", you can navigate to that folder with file explorer and reinstall them if you want to.
That is assuming that your new ROM did that for you.

What ROM are you running?

After more playing around and using CWM 3x, it appears this is how those 'hacks' need to function in order to install busybox. Since there isn't enough space within /system/app, something must be removed. Those two apk files are removed which in turn allows busybox (later in the install process) to exist.
I've since installed SyndicateRom Frozen Takiya 1.1.0 which removed all sprint and samsung bloatware (apk files) etc. For the two apk files I've needed (myfiles and memo), I've pushed those back using SdxAppRemover-1.5. If I need anything relating to the sprint or samsung apk files in the future to upgrade, I'll need to Odin back to stock at this point.

Newbie Question with VEGAn-TNT

Hi everyone,
I have a newbie question because I have read and re-read a few of the stickies here but am still confused. I used to have an elocity a-7 and to flash the rom I would simply copy a file called update to the micro sd and boot into the recovery and it would update. Seems there are a few ways to do this with the Gtab and I am very confused and I do not want to brick my device. Lack of the market is driving me crazy as are other buggy thing in the stock os.
So I have my tab connect to my pc and I can see an update file there, now if I simply delete that file and replace it with the renamed VEGAn-tnt and then run an update it should work right? Am I missing something here? Several stickies say to install clockwork first but just doing that is confusing to me and I would rather just install an update and see if it works.
Am I right about the procedure or am I missing soemthing.
Thanks for any help in advance and sorry if this question has been asked before I am just trying to get clarity before I do this.

ClockWorkMod is extremely useful and installing it is as easy (and identical actually) as flashing ROMs on the A7 (owned one for about 3 days before returning it and getting my tab )

1st wifi and update with viewsonic. Updates kernel to 3588 or something. Then I downloaded the tnt lite .rar file from roebeet tnt 4.3.0 and extracted it with winzip on my desktop. It gave me 3 files: update.zip, command, recovery.. ok. Drag command file inside recovery folder on your desktop. Now you have 2 files to only worry about. Plug your USB cable into your tower or laptop. A USB message appears on screen of gtab. Yes activate USB. Go to start, computer, and gtab will be there. Double click on gtab and open up file structure. I renamed my update.zip and recovery files oldupdate.zip and oldrecovery. Then drag the 2 files on your desktop into /sdcard to replace the ones you just renamed. Deactivate USB. Turn off gtab. Press volume up button and power button. You will see a box with a green arrow filling box. When it comes up. OH MY GOD. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL. DEVICE. I have had it 2 days and I have Skype, all kinds of games, and I can't put it down. [Q] eMatic oem folder

Hey xda. Sorry if this post has been misplaced, but I noticed there is no device forum for the tablet I am asking about today, and that is understandable. My girlfriend recently got an eMatic eGlide Pro II XL tablet for her birthday and it is running Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3. I noticed that it had a lot of bloatware and no google play store on it, and she wanted the play store, so I rooted the device for her and installed the play store and it works like a charm. The only problem I seem to have run into is this read only folder called "oem". The path for this partition is /oem/ and there are a few bloatware apps in there. For some reason though, I cannot edit or delete anything in that partition as it says it is read only even though i am using the root functions of ES File Explorer. I am able to modify other system apps though root explorer. I even tried using terminal emulator commands to remove the items but it still didn't work. Is there a way I can mount this folder as read/write? If I can, that would be a blessing, as I could delete the crapware that came with the tablet and the old version of YouTube that is buggy and not updateable thanks to being placed in the oem folder. Thanks for reading all this guys, I know it's a wall of text, haha.

Ematic: What is the browser?
What is the browser that is install from factory.. on Ematic devices ..as it is not "Chrome" [It almost looks like Dolphin], when I tried to do a regular .apk install of "Chrome" from the Google store it dies which almost tells me that it need to be pushed into the device. So am I correct that I need to find a downloadable .apk of "Chrome" for Android 4.0.3 ?

How did you root the tablet? it seems there are several Ematic tablets being sold at wal-mart and I think people would like to know how you rooted it. (I know I would.)

I used a tool called Root with Restore by Bin4ry. It took me a couple times. The first time I did it, all it managed to do was slow the tablet down, then i just performed a factory reset and tried again using the same process until it worked. It didn't take all that long. The hardest part is getting the adb drivers to recognize the tablet. I will attach my adb drivers so you don't have to go through all the rigamarole.
Navigate to wherever your android sdk folder is. Mine is at C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk
Within the android-sdk folder, look for extras, then google, then usb_driver. Make a backup of everything in your usb_driver folder, just in case.
Next just extract the contents of the zip I attached to this post. Make sure USB debugging is on, and plug it in. It should be recognized assuming there isn't some other problem i haven't encountered or forgot to mention.
Once your computer recognizes the adb interface for your tablet, use the Root with Restore tool until it works.

Thanks, that's great info. I will try it out. (I have a Ematic egs005 7" on it's way to me. they seem to be very cheap right now at under $60)

I'll bet that you can get it rooted. You may have to edit those drivers though since I don't think my girlfriend's tablet isn't the same as the one you mentioned.
If the drivers I posted don't work for you, then open up "android_winusb.inf" from that zip file in your favorite text editor.
Somewhere under the "[Google.NTx86]" and "[Google.NTamd64]" sections, add this:

Remember where you put those, cause what goes under those entries is the hardware ID of your tablet. You can get that by going under device manager and right clicking on your tablet, if it is unrecognized it should have a yellow triangle on it or something like that. Go to properties and go to the details tab, then from the drop down menu, select hardware IDs. In my case, two came up. Just pick one. If that one ends up not working later, use the one you didn't try.
Now, your entries should look like this:

Next, try to update the drivers on your tablet via device manager. Right click on your tablet like we did last time, and click properties. Go to the driver tab, and hit the update driver button. You'll have to manually navigate to where your drivers are. Select the folder where you extracted the zip to (make sure you have the edited file in there!) and follow the procedure to update the driver.
Next, open up an adb window and type in adb devices. If you have something showing up, congrats! You should be able to try the root tool now. As always, be careful!

eglide pro ll xl
I just bought the eglide pro ll xl also. From what I have read and done to my tab so far, it is already rooted from the factory. It sounds like a lot of the ematic tabs are. I've been researching different operating systems to put on my tab but there isn't anything that says it is specifically for mine. They pretty much just list the types of tablets the ROMS will work for. The question I have is what type of tablet is this. Allwinner a10? LY F1? TREQ? I would really like to know this and a good way to back up my current system so if I screw it up I can go back and try again.

I didn't add most of those entries in the drivers file, it originated as a sort of "fix all" driver that was posted on xda to connect many many types of different devices to adb without hassle. I added a few of the entries using the hardware ID method I described above to accommodate some less popular devices that my friends and family asked me to root.
I think I heard talk somewhere about custom roms for the eGlide, but I have no clue how to flash them, and seeing as how that tablet wasn't mine, I did not want to try to flash one and brick it, lol. I couldn't find any recoveries or any other tool to flash things to it. If you do find a way, all I can say is be careful.
As far as backing up goes, root with restore supports unrooting as well. I never performed that function though, since root hasn't done anything bad for the tablets I put them on, haha. I'm not certain there is an easy backup method since as I said a second ago, no custom recoveries. To be safe, I would recommend a factory data reset before attempting any rooting/unrooting of this tablet.

I couldn't find any recoveries or any other tool to flash things to it. If you do find a way, all I can say is be careful.
As far as backing up goes, root with restore supports unrooting as well. I never performed that function though, since root hasn't done anything bad for the tablets I put them on, haha. I'm not certain there is an easy backup method since as I said a second ago, no custom recoveries. To be safe, I would recommend a factory data reset before attempting any rooting/unrooting of this tablet.

I actually installed CWM 6.0.1.2 by Flowish on to my tab and it works great except for the process he has to get in to the recovery. I have to use the terminal emulator to launch it. That's why I am leery about installing a different ROM. If I can't get the thing to boot up properly I then can't get to the terminal emulator to get to recovery to restore my backup. I'm still searching and learning though. I'll figure it out eventually.

Check if there's fastboot for this tablet. There's a fastboot command to boot into the recovery. If not, then I would just not flash a Rom
