Froyo roms 3G fix for T-Mobile (untested) - Defy Android Development

Try pushing the files in the zip in /system.
http://www.mediafire.com/?lh7gy509ce6zcjf
(For Froyo Roms, not Eclair)
Untested (I'm not on T-Mobile)

I haven't been able to find it but there is an app on this forum somewhere called ItfunzBasebandSwitcher.apk that fixes 3G for Froyo. It's tested, it works and it's much simpler then the other fixes.
Edit: Here it is.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=490361&d=1295114350

Thanks so much! I'm going to give it a go! All I have is EDGE right now, but I'm also in an area, my dorm/campus which has bad 3G/Data connection for T-Mobile USA. This is why I need WiFi calling working on this ROM. Could someone please tell me how I can get it working? I need a ROM that WiFi calling is working on; this is extremely important for me. Thanks in advance!

adlx, I tried the app and its not working for me.
I have the Higgsy Modded 2.2 ROM - Minimal Moto/Chinese, maybe that's why. Do you think it worth it to try your method or is it the exact same?
thanks in advance (Im getting adb right now, but asking in case its pointless)

It didnt work.
I'm from argentina, we have AT&T bands.
Originally my phone came loaded with:
System version: Blur_Version6.14.7.MB525.Personal.en.AR
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Number version: JORLA_U3_6.14.7
I have a clockwork recovery backup from that. Will it do me any good? I have 2.2 chinese now.
I tried itfunz, your method and #*#*4636#*#*. Nothing worked the last option said seting USA network did not work.
please help?

Hi adlx, HEROEdelREVES is trying to help (also from argentina). He sent me his nandroid backup (I deleted mine while flashing :s).
I tried copying over the files in your fix with the original files from the bp_nvm_default folder for the latam version. Still, it does not work. Any ideas?

It looks like mine fix

Can confirm that this app with middle button & reboot restores 3G for Froyo roms on my T-Mobile US Defy.
Unfortunately it breaks Tethering, so you get "No valid tethering APN" when you try to enable it. Not sure if there is any fix for this with any of the 3G fixes for T-mo USA. But I'd rather have 3G than tethering and no 3G.

[HOW-TO] Get your Milestone back to stock

Imagine you have to send your Milestone to the customer service, would be better if it was "clean" or you want to downgrade it ? Here is how to :
- 0 : What you need : A Windows (sorry ^^), RSDLite and the drivers 32bits or 64bits
- 1 : Choose the right .sbf from here
- 2 : Plug the USB and shut your Milestone down
- 3 : Boot it in bootloader mode (press the D-PAD UP key while pressing the power button)
- 4 : Launch RSD Lite, your device should be in the list
- 5 : Select your .sbf file and click on start ans let it do, your phone will reboot at the end
Here we are, you have your clean Milestone !
This completely un-roots it and everything, right?

Yes, this wipes everything you have in your phone, including root and/or vulnerable recoveries etc...obviously it doesn't format your MicroSD

Hi dingeth:
1) Are you rooted yet?
2) Where'd you buy the phone from?
3) Are you on the original ROM you bought it with?
4) What do you see under settings > about phone > Firmware configuration version?
There's a chance your phone is actually running the same firmware as another country's. For example if you bought it from Expansys it's probably a UK milestone. In any case, if I read Wikipedia right, UMTS 2100 is the only frequency used in all of Africa. So your phone might be like the Euro/most-of-Asia 900/2100 version, but it could also be like the CDN/Thai/LatAm 850/1900/2100 version. You won't lose 3G from flashing the wrong one because they all have 2100, but you'd be best to stick to the closest one you can.
Now - if your phone is still in total stock condition, unrooted, then you have the opportunity to make a nandroid backup of the original state. Go to the root instructions using OpenRecovery. When you get to the stage where you're in the OpenRecovery menu, before you go and root the phone, make a full backup. Make two in fact - one with data, one without. And copy it somewhere safe.
Does this also reset a custom rom??

Name your favourite custom ROM for the Milestone and we can answer your question.
(tumbleweed)
Oh right, there are no custom ROMs... only highly customized images that are still piled on top of the stock ROM.

Hi cmstlist
yes I am rooted. I used the rooting procedure desribed using aumkar's method with the vulnerable recovery and RSD Lite.
I received the phone on contract (MTN) and the firmware configuration version says:
GAS_EMEA_USASHLS00RTINT_P012 and Build SHOLS_U2_02.31.0
I was thinking of trying the U.K SBF for 2.1 coz it also has the same build number?
too late for the nandroid backup since it's already rooted. everything works fine though, rooted it to overclock which works 100%!!! Nut i'm wondering if i'll run into any problems when i eventually try to upgrade to Froyo. thanks again

Interesting! MTN must have released it so recently that nobody has located the SBF. EMEA means Europe, Middle East, Asia... so it's probably UMTS 900/2100. Don't forget to take a nandroid backup now before trying anything - because you may have no way to get back to your original carrier's firmware.
Also if anyone else on your carrier buys a Milestone and is looking to root, suggest that they make the backup before rooting. Then there will be a master copy.
EDIT: That string is mentioned in this post:
http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-milestone/75460-milestone-2-1-update-root-guide.html
and the following file name is posted to match:
SHOLS_U2_02.31.0_UCASHLSMR2EMEAB1B805C.0R_PDS003_USASHLS00RTINT_P012_A011_HWp2a_Service1FF.sbf.gz
The SBF in question is not listed yet on and-developers but it's on Motorola's site:
https://rsddownload.motorola.com/do...SHLS00RTINT_P012_A011_HWp2a_Service1FF.sbf.gz
And the non-service version (full wipe when you flash it) is here:
https://rsddownload.motorola.com/do...003_USASHLS00RTINT_P012_A011_HWp2a_1FF.sbf.gz
Good luck!

As far as I know, the only difference is that the service SPF doesn't do a wipe.
Yep, the only difference is a non-service doesn't do a wipe
Ok awesome, thanks for the help
Well if you want everything to be wipe out than a non-service sbf should do the job but a wipe/data reset via recovery console is also recommended for ultimate clean state.
So I guess a non-service sbf is a total wipeout but service sbf leave something intact which I have no idea. I have been using non-service sbf to root and unroot my milestone hence I have no idea what the service version do.
to delete, i type post in wrong topic, sorry.

If not, how to do this ?
No, it doesn't. To do it, on you Androphone, you've have to go into Setting, SD Card and Memory, Desactivate the SD and then format it (maybe not the right label, mine are in French, but should be close).
I am from israel and I so celcome's sbf, but it says the alarm isnt working, does it contains celcomes hebrew?

Official T-Mobile US OTA Update 2.2.1 Froyo 34.4.9

Here you folks go. Off of my phone to you. http://www.multiupload.com/YOXKQ18YW0. You Must have 2.1 with the 3.6 Update. I would recommend making a backup before applying. Use at your own use. If you get a Status 7 error, see my thread in the General forum on how I resolved it. Have Fun!
how is it? faster than 2.1?
Oh yeah. More bloatware, but that's easy to remove. Internet speed is faster. Phone is more responsive. Nice to have the Hotspot feature now. Overall a worthy upgrade. Now to wait for 2.3
can i use this update for my finland rom 3.42? or this is just for TMo version?

Would you happen to have original t-mobile 2.1 in sbf format?
Unfortunately no-one has one for the US. I'm guessing you updated to the leaked version? The good news is that if my suspicion is correct a nandroid backup of this should play fine with the updated firmware. If you look at the difference its minor. 34.4.9 vs 34.4.4. I have not yet had the time to make one yet. I'll try to do so tonight.
What did you have to do with the update.zip in order to upgrade your defy? I'm on 2.1 with the 3.6 update, I'm rooted with superoneclick, and I have it copied to the root of my sd. Did you use clockworkmod recovery?

It checks for the right build fingerprint before it continues. You need to have 6.36.0 or it aborts.

As for right build fingerprint, yes you are right. It is picky as hell. In the other thread I also mentioned that it is checking for apps. For example, I have Blockbuster disabled....it checked for it, didn't find it, and failed. I spent over 4 hours last night getting this to a point that it would work. Way Way too much hassle. Unfortunately I don't think I'm going to get to do a backup tonight. Was up way too late last night/this morning working on this and put in a 12 hour day. As soon as I get a breather I will. Sorry.
No worries!
Is there any way to edit the build.prop file so that I can get the update to work?

[Q] Motorola Xoom Tablet 3G + WiFi needs upgraded, rooted, and unlocked

Hi there XDA community,
I would like to know if there is an up-to-day tutorial that has working file links? I would like to upgrade, root, and unlock my Xoom. I just bought a Motorola Xoom from 1saleaday.com the Model is an MZ601 and says "approved by IDA for use in Singapore" it is currently just as is and is not unlocked or rooted. I would like to get it upgraded, unlocked, and rooted so I can use it for what I got it for. It has WiFi and Data service that supports WCDMA 850/900/1900/2100, GSM 850/900/1800/1900, ATO_ITEM: AP1520AD3X3. It is currently running on Android Honeycomb 3.0.1, build number H.6.1-38-9. If you any ideas, files, links, tutorials (up-to-day), or can help, that would be great!
Thanks InfiniteImmortal.
P.S.
Here are the configurations;
Model Number: MZ601
Android version: 3.0.1
Firmware: GAS_ASIA_USAEVRSTURTIRD_P016
Baseband version: N_014.83.28P
Baseband configuration: UCAEVEUB1B8EU034.0R
Kernel: 2.6.36.3 [email protected] #1
Build Number: H.6.1-38-9
More specs will be provided if they are needs, thanks again II!
yeah, there are tons of tutorials, relatively up to date. Relatively, because the new method to root xyboards might work for classic xooms too. This method would not require you to unlock your xoom for rooting and thus allow titanium backup to backup all your data before unlocking and thus wiping your xoom.

Okay I will go and read these threads, but are you for sure they work on the EU models? I have read on many different sites and threads that say the normal way of rooting, unlocking, and upgrading for US models have bricked the EU ones to were they did not work anymore. This is one reason why I'm looking for an up-to-date threads that say they work with the EU models. If you could clarify more that would be great.

That is weird. I have never read a thread about a brick that occured using the method I (and others) described. Could you maybe post a link to such a thread?
To Clarify this: the Unlock should impose absolutely no risk at all as it is a feature implemented by motorola. The recovery, even if it didn't work, wouldn't lead to a brick. And the universal xoom root should not do any magic either, it should only add two files to the filesystem (su and Superuser.apk) and remove those files that would make your new shiny recovery go byebye once booted
Ty my knowledge, only the "flashing a custom rom" part is a source of bricking. And that can easily be avoided by flashing a MZ601-rom instead of something else
That said, nobody can guarantee you that this is completely safe. There is a thread right next door with a poor guy whose xoom bricked itself overnight. That was a wifi-xoom, and so far no one knows why that happened. We're still working on a solution, though
InfiniteImmortal said:
Okay I will go and read these threads, but are you for sure they work on the EU models? I have read on many different sites and threads that say the normal way of rooting, unlocking, and upgrading for US models have bricked the EU ones to were they did not work anymore. This is one reason why I'm looking for an up-to-date threads that say they work with the EU models. If you could clarify more that would be great.

yes, you will be able to go back to the original rom and lock your bootloader again. If you do that, you will be able to get ota updates (if you really want to do so, usually custom roms are ahead of the ota-updates)
You should make a backup of your xoom right after starting the new recovery, even before rooting. That will give you a set of files that, if you restore them, will reset your xoom back to stock, thus you'll only have to re-lock your bootloader to get ota-updates

Custom ROM Files
Hey llama-power,
You say in your thread post that "If you already downloaded your new rom, put that onto the sdcard as well, it should be a flashable .zip-file".
Do you by chance have the links to these files? I know I.C.S. is the latest one, but I'm happy with an old one if it is stable. Or if you have a custom ROM for the Xoom that would be great. I have a Samsung Captivate generation 1 that I use Firefly or Cognition on, along with the original stock ROM as backup just in case. Any links or files would be very cool!

Suggested Thread
Just to let you know your suggested thread "and maybe this [HOW TO] Motorola Xoom 2/Xyboard Root Method by Dan Rosenberg" does not work on my Xoom, but thanks for your suggestion. I'll try the other ones you put up, so far I have read every page on every linked thread I've come across. Lots and lots of helpful info on those as well as your pages. But if you can respond to my three earlier posts that would be helpful too. Starting to get information overload, haha.

Just to let you know your instructions worked like a charm! Went step-by-step and everything worked with no problems at all.
A few more question, yes I know MORE questions! haha. Where is the backup I make stored at? I would like to put it in my backups folder for the Xoom under its drive in my computer. Currently the 3G data service is still not working on it, but is recognizing AT&T network. It says "Mobile Network State: Disconnected" just like before and suggestions? Other then that I also still don't have access to the micro SD card in Android, but can access it in the Recovery.
I now think its time for a new platform, NO more Honeycomb 3.0.1! If you have any suggestions your more than welcome to say or suggest just like for the other posts!
llama-power You ROCK!
Time for me to get some sleep! Been reading and doing Xoom stuff for hours now. I'll be on later to night to read your posts!

Wow, wasn't aware of that. But these methods are really old. The method I mentioned is the universial root-method by solarnz which is supposed to work on every 'classic' xoom (despite the family edition with its locked bootloader)

I am using the team eos nightlies. Works really nicely except deep-sleep isn't working for me while wifi is enabled. Don't know if that is a rom-issue though, might be some app I use. Anyways, it's not really a problem to me, battery life is still more than sufficient.
You can get the team EOS nightlies for your xoom (MZ601 / umts_everest / EU-3G) from this thread. Download the latest nightly build and the latest G-Apps package (thats the Google Mail, Market, etc. apps) from the link in the same thread. Put those onto your sdcard and flash them from recovery. Wipe /data, /cache and dalvik-cache first, then install the rom, then the g-apps package and finally reboot. Do not reboot between the steps. When upgrading from one nightly to another omit wiping /data.

on your sdcard: $SDCARD$/clockworkmod/backup/$DATE_AND_TIME_OF_YOUR_BACKUP$. just copy that entire folder, it contains many .img-files (one for each partition) plus another file for checksums. You will need all those files for a restore. You may, however, rename the directory.

that is weird. What do you mean with "just like before"? As you haven't flashed another rom yet, nothing regarding connectivity should have changed so far. A few pointers to eliminate some errors: is Airplane mode off? Is mobile data enabled? Are you connected to a wifi-network? Did you set up your AT&T-apn correctly?

yeah, once you flash your new rom, you should be able to access that sd-card. As stated before, you are just rooted, that gives you the power to change things but if you didn't (like installing something that is supposed to give you access to your sdcard), nothing should have changed

You are correct on this, nothing has changed from before except becoming rooted and unlocked. I was hoping that just maybe a full system wipe might fix the connection issue I was having. I was being over optimistic!

Yes airplane mode is off and Mobile data service is enabled. I have tried it with WiFi both on and off, before and after rooting and unlocking but still nothing. As for the AT&T-APN being setup correctly, I used the exact same settings that are being used in my phone with nothing different; but still to no prevail. Do you know if there is a settings list or configuration out somewhere for the APN?

Yeah I kinda guessed at that one, I remembered reading about the Honeycomb 3.1.0 update giving users the ability to use the micro SD cards today. That was before I read your post. lol You might know about this, Do you know where the repository of updates are located for the Motorola Xoom 'classic' model? I was thinking it would be a good idea to have all of them, if I ever wanted to use my warranty it would be good to have the latest stock ROM on it! It's better to be safe then up an icy creek in the Alps with a swim suit on!

Just to let you know I'm using the ROM you recommended and I love it so far. As for the data service on the AT&T network it now works, after switching to the new ROM and it loaded the proper APN settings which were different from my phone. And of course with a new ROM the SD card now works as well. So my last and final question would be as stated before where can I find the oldest most up to date stock ROM?
Best regards, InternetImmortal

well, there are a couple of sources for a stock rom. For one, your sd-card should contain one (I restored my backup yesterday and yes, it even reset the recovery to stock)...
Also, motorola offers some filesystem images at http://developer.motorola.com/products/software/, but you'll need to register with them to get to the download (should be free, though)
Finally, it might be desirable to have some .sbf-file for your xoom. Those can be flashed using a software called rsd lite, even when you aren't able to enter your recovery system. Doesn't always work, so it's not more than a Hail Mary move... However, Motorola does a lot to keep these files from floating around the web, so I won't be able to provide you with a link.
As always thanks for the keen insight. Just came across a few threads that perked my interest. Have you ever tried to get working SMS text messaging and voice calling on the Xoom? Since I'm using the SIM from my phone to do the data I was hoping there might be a way. I haven't done a lot of reading on this yet but you seem to know everything.

nope. The sim inside my xoom is on the same contract as the sim in my phone and I had to pick one that would receive texts. Naturally, since I always carry my phone, that's where the texts go, so the xoom wouldn't ever receive a text ever anyways. Voice calling is currently not possible on the xoom. So the only upside of that would be that I could send texts using the xoom, but that isn't so much better than texting on my Desire HD. Plus, that would tear apart the messaging threads between my phone and the xoom.
However, there's a thread in the xoom development section where flashable zip-files are published for every eos nightly, you should be able to just flash that over your rom and thus enable texting.
Actually, I might try that some time, but right now I should really learn for that exam on friday:-/

Which ROM?

I guess you have to choose between the devil and a hard place with TeamEOS JellyBean ROMS. I have a Verizon 3G Xoom, and it seems I can choose between wifi or 4G or Euro 3G. Well I would like to have wifi and Verizon 3G, but it doesn't seem possible.
Going to TeamEOS's site I follow links to the roms themselves, but there is no indication of how to decode the secret name of my device.
Amazingly there is no explanation in the OPs for these ROMs.
And IRC is dead.
I didn't understand well your question, but I will put here the name of all devices:
Wingray - Wifi only Xoom (Grey back)
Stingray - Verizon Xoom (If I'm not wrong black back)
Everest - Europe 3G Xoom (White/Silver back)
It looks like your is a MZ600, that was called Stingray before the 4g update, I'm not sure if you can flash the 4g ROM as you're on 3g, but you can try and tell if worked or not, if it doesn't work flash back another ROM
Good luck
Thank you. I was being a bit sarcastic, in my frustration.
So Stingray will allow wifi -and- 3g to work on the US Verizon Xoom? It appears that Stingray is only for 4G?
Looks like I can't go back, as stingray_cdma no longer exists.
Is there anything that doesn't work with this ROM? wifi teathering?

(silly questions ahead)
You are rooted right? What recoveries did you try to install? TWRP? Rogue?
Where/when did you get the xoom? Are you using the 3g?
It isn't a xyboard right?
NO I am not rooted. All the xoomroot.zip's have been removed from the internet.
NO I do not have any recovery installed, because laying them down has no effect. Boot into recovery and it's the dead android. I've tried three of them. (solarnz, Steady, dreamcwii)
My son gave me the Xoom, and I don't know how long he's had it. I am not using the 3G, but if I sell it I'd like to at least have it available.
No it is not an xyboard. It is a 600.

Why won't this help you??
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1468298
That is XxLordxX's One stop shop tool for the xoom. It unlocks and relocks the bootloader, It root's, unroots.. etc. etc.
If you aren't using the 3g, you CAN just flash a wifi ROM, and it will work. You would need the original image or a ROM that supports 3g to restore it. If you unlocked and rooted, then installed a recovery, and performed a backup of your xoom on the stock ROM before changing it... you would be fine if you wanted to sell it. Restore the original stock image then unroot and relock the bootloader.
If Lord's tool helps you, be sure to hit his thanks button
Yes tried that too. (Linux) Ran his RunThisOnce tool, and all files disappeared. Examined the script and it's supposed to put them in ~/LAIOT, but unfortunately it does not. When I manually move the directory, most of its subdirs are empty, and there's no clue where to start. Tried LAIOT, but it is nowhere in the run path.

That would help.
But I can not understand why installing any CWM recovery does not work. This is simply a show stopper.

If you thank me, make sure you thank solarnz, it's his work, I just happened to have it lying around. If you aren't rooted, you aren't gonna get a CWM to stick, and bootloader unlocked as well.
Thanks but no idea what to do with that. I don't have CWM so can't install it that way. It won't work with adb or fastboot. No idea what version it is, or whether it will work with current ROMs.

The root worked with any update for sure through ICS, I doubt you are on jellybean and it would probably work on that. If you didn't have the zip itself before, how do you know it doesn't work with adb?
This is the perspective thread that I originally got the zip file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242241
Anyways, Good luck, I will leave the zip in dropbox for another day or two in case you change your mind
I am -sure- I am not on jellybean, because I have not been able to flash it. None of the recoveries actually flash to the tablet, so there is of course no way I can use it to run JB.
