Official T-Mobile US OTA Update 2.2.1 Froyo 34.4.9 - Defy Android Development

Here you folks go. Off of my phone to you. http://www.multiupload.com/YOXKQ18YW0. You Must have 2.1 with the 3.6 Update. I would recommend making a backup before applying. Use at your own use. If you get a Status 7 error, see my thread in the General forum on how I resolved it. Have Fun!

how is it? faster than 2.1?

Oh yeah. More bloatware, but that's easy to remove. Internet speed is faster. Phone is more responsive. Nice to have the Hotspot feature now. Overall a worthy upgrade. Now to wait for 2.3

can i use this update for my finland rom 3.42? or this is just for TMo version?

Would you happen to have original t-mobile 2.1 in sbf format?

Unfortunately no-one has one for the US. I'm guessing you updated to the leaked version? The good news is that if my suspicion is correct a nandroid backup of this should play fine with the updated firmware. If you look at the difference its minor. 34.4.9 vs 34.4.4. I have not yet had the time to make one yet. I'll try to do so tonight.

What did you have to do with the update.zip in order to upgrade your defy? I'm on 2.1 with the 3.6 update, I'm rooted with superoneclick, and I have it copied to the root of my sd. Did you use clockworkmod recovery?

Its an update zip file signed by company so you should enter stock recovery by power+vol down and then select update from zip.

hmm... how about flash 3.4.2-107 TMobile US Blur with RSDlite and then
update.zp?

Just tried it. No go.
It checks for the right build fingerprint before it continues. You need to have 6.36.0 or it aborts.
The Nandroid backup theory mught be the one that works...

Thanks for the update.
...... I just want something official now
( I am on official Chinese 2.21 build 1.11, it is fast, specially when you skip Blur registration. But, just in case I need my phone service by t-mobile .... )

The leaked T-Mobile SBF was fast too.
But yeah, an official one would be better.
If the Nandroid method doesn't work, I hope someone posts an SBF soon...

As for right build fingerprint, yes you are right. It is picky as hell. In the other thread I also mentioned that it is checking for apps. For example, I have Blockbuster disabled....it checked for it, didn't find it, and failed. I spent over 4 hours last night getting this to a point that it would work. Way Way too much hassle. Unfortunately I don't think I'm going to get to do a backup tonight. Was up way too late last night/this morning working on this and put in a 12 hour day. As soon as I get a breather I will. Sorry.

No worries!
Is there any way to edit the build.prop file so that I can get the update to work?

Unfortunately I don't have an un-updated Defy in front of me to pull the strings. I'll look at one of the ones at work tomorrow. If you read the error though it should tell you exactly what it is looking for. Mine did. Aslo try deleting the logwrapper. The was one of the holdups on mine.

I have the string. I'm just wondering if it would work if I do edit it...
Where do I locate logwrapper?

I just loaded this update.zip on my fiance's Defy...didn't wipe data or cache, it's booting right now....stuck at the T-Mobile "Stick Together" screen, waiting for the initial long boot
EDIT: Booted, running 2.2.1 now! So far so good, it's a little slow but it would be while it catches up. I have an Atrix and it's almost the identical interface.

can you make a sbf file of entire build?

New official version stock English rom for UK v2.51.1 released.
DOWNLOAD: Defy Rom v2.51.1
thanks, but where can we find the changelog of this new rom ?
Great! Will give it a try.
might try this tomorrow, although I can't see it being anything major, at the end of the day its not been push OTA as an update yet. I just tried the supposedly "no blur" firmware too and there was still loads of blur on it!
it is unrootable for the moiment.
Are z4root (or other rooting methods) and tenfar's recovery working with this ROM? 'Cause someone in another topic said, that he flashed this ROM, and now he can't flash back anything older than this. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10023019&postcount=7)
And stuck with this ROM, without root and recovery, would be a huge pain in the *ss.
Edit: I think I got my answer from bihariel's post.

i don´t know, but i have the "deblured" 2.34.1 firm rooted with z4root and with the clockwork recovery working
Thanks, have installed and its a nice improvement.
Not a giant leep but more of a polish. I must be one of the few people that likes the email client in motoblur.
i aint going anywhere near this it its not rootable then - there nothing wrong with 2.21 imo. And I like the blur email app too lol
If this rom isn't rootable, doesn't that mean that the guys at motorola "fixed" the exploit, that we used, to get root access (and because of that, we need to find another exploit)?
the problem is that you can not flash any older than this and without root you can not flash custom recovery and can not restore nand backup.
if you flash older the phone wont boot.
Yep now unable get root access. Oh well
im stuck on this UK rom too! im not giving up so easy though... just need root and we are good.

cellular south showcase roms

are their any roms for the showcase?
I haven't found one yet, I try to keep a check in this mez forum though since we donte have our own forum. From what I can gather then mesmerize is most similar. I would nit flash one specific for the mez though. Hope us Showcase users get some love soon though. My hats go off to all the developers.
I'll build you something
If you can send me a link to a copy of a nandroid backup, I can build you something. There's almost no difference between the two, so it wouldn't be that hard.
Yeah id be glad to do that, if not tonight tomorrow for sure, thank you!

No prob. I can even do some quick, basic ports of the themes that I put out for the Mes. They're not complete themes but they are better than nothing for now. Plus when we get everything built up, it will be easy to move stuff from us to you guys.
Just as a side note, I don't have a Showcase to test any of this stuff. So it will be up to the brave to flash first and report back. I won't do anything to your builds that I don't do to ours first, but you know how it goes with these sorts of things.

I was gonna say, if you have 2.2 then you could post a copy of your backup and some devs in a higher pay grade than me could port it to the Mesmerize and the Fascinate.
Anyway, just a copy of a 2.1 nandroid backup is all I need. Preferably stock, rooted, but I can work with whatever you have installed.

It finally started to come through. At 293mb, I'm guessing that Cellular South put a bunch of bloat on it. If it stays downloading at this rate, I'll have it in about 15 minutes and I could have something done tonight.

OK, I had a couple of problems with the first run of deodexing. The Showcase framework is slightly different than the Mesmerize and did a couple of unexpected things. That's why it's taken so long to get back on here with anything. Because of the problems, I need a brave soul to step up to the plate and flash a tester. This shouldn't look any different from the stock OS because I have not taken anything out yet (nothing visible anyway).
Requirements for a tester:
1. You must understand that this is an Alpha test, and that your phone may not operate as expected. I don't see any reason that it wouldn't but, gotta cover that butt.
2. You must understand how your phone works normally. This should be a given.
3. I would like this to be someone who is familiar with adb and has at least downloaded the Android SDK and been able to play around some, not completely necessary, but it would be nice.
4. You must be willing, and able to flash a couple of tests so that I can run at least two scenarios before we move in to a Beta. This means you must have CWM already set up on your phone and now how to do this again if need be.
5. Lastly, and most importantly, the Showcase does not have stock recovery files released that I have found yet. If something goes horribly wrong, (I don't expect this at all) you must understand that you may not be able to get back to "normal". There are workarounds that have worked on the Mesmerize before I released our stock files, but this is a last resort type thing.
If you are ready, willing, and able, send me a PM. I may not get back to you immediately, as I am doing several things today, but I will get back to you today. This is not for the average person to flash, so please take this seriously.
The Alpha has been built and submitted to my tester. If all goes well, I could have a Beta version ready for public flashing tonight.
If so, I should also have basic themes that will be able to be flashed also.
--Also, I need a list of the stock apps that come on the Showcase. Just the visible apps from the app drawer, not the apk's in the app folder.

[HOW TO] Flash Froyo without loosing downgradability and keeping cam flash

Thought I'd better post this before everyone flashes these sbfs and looses downgradability (is that a word?)
So as you may have worked out this process is if you have never flashed a non downgradable .sbf i.e you have never flashed 2.51 eclair or the 2.2 GB/US 2.2 froyo. If you flashed these then this won't work for you and youve lost downgrability.
Follow the process below, This works with the TMobile US and The GB 3.4.2 Firmwares.
It may seem long winded, but it is the only way to get it running with everything working ok and still downgradable/able to flash other .sbf, most notably the cam flash working 100% - fully sync'd and no greeny blue tinge to it.
Need the Chinese 2.2 release – Download Here
Need the system.img nandroid and boot/devtree.sbf – Download here
Also now added the GB system image+md5 - the one that racca added in the original thread. Download hear
• Flash the Chinese .sbf by RSD lite
• Once booted root via superoneclick http://bit.ly/gUzV19 then reboot (make site debugging on)
• Install Clockworkmod recovery app http://bit.ly/dOdhKc , open app, install recovery and then boot into recovery (make sure debugging is off whenever you boot into recovery
• Wipe data/cache in recovery
• Flash the Tmob 3.42 system image(pre rooted) via advanced restore (folder need to be put in goapkrev/backup folder)
• Once restored pull battery, put battery back in while holding up to get into bootloader
• Flash the boot/devtree.sbf once its rebooted after this you are done.
If you want to use the GB release then just restore the system.img from the GB release.
Enjoy and don't get locked in peoples.
Thanks to adlx whom I enjoyed working with to figure this out - team effort! +as always Sorensiim for the hosting!
I don't think you actually need to flash anything other than boot/devtree.
I tried TMO with uk2.51 and it was just fine.
And if someone followed your post exactly as it is now. Chances are they'd
get their phone bricked (since many are already on 2.51).
Easy to fix for sure, but since it is most likely meant for less experienced
users, we really don't want that, right?
BTW
Thanks for writing it up.
Quick question for you Higgsy...
On one of the original T-Mobile Froyo threads, you posted update files to bypass the Motoblur Setup ("Skip_Blur_adlx-signed" worked fantastically...much thanks!).
Are those modifications included in these posted files already?
EDIT: Went ahead and tried it both with and without the update. Answer is that you cannot skip Moto Setup with this install; however, the Skip_Blue_adlx-signed update will allow you to if the update is applied before leaving recovery.
EDIT: Credit goes to adlx, as it was his file (mis-remembered...should have known better from the file name though). Using Higgsy's instructions and links and adlx's update, I now have a working working US 3.42 with the Motoblur setup bypassed. Thanks to all those who made that possible.
sorry to bother, but as I am now having the green light problem after flashing the "flash fix" several weeks ago, can I get the normal flash back using this method?

No you can't. Nandroid backup and/or SBF won't do anything on that front.
As I am on the UK sbf, this will not be of much use to me. Thankfully, I have no issues with that sbf, so I do not need this.
That said, thank you from those who do.

what do you mean by "on that front"?
means that fix package consists some fundamental codes that had thoroughly change the hardware control? and nandroid backup as well as SBF could not overwrite that part?
Forgot to put in the post this is if you have not flashed a non downgradable .sbf before, although I would have thought people would be able to work that out by the nature of the thread.
This will work and will fix you cam flash if you are coming from 2.21+2.35 Eclair ROMs or 2.2 Chinese ROM where you haven't flashed a non downgradable .sbf

Yea it might replace recovery and unroot you, you should be able to use Easyflasher to root and flash custom recovery again though, it doesn't care which ROM is installed
Im not seeing any other reports of an update though
If you're rooted, you could pull the update and upload it for people here to check, I can't remember the exact location though, something like /sdcard/asus
EDIT - Possibly this location: "<Internal Storage>\ASUS\Update"
Its been so long since I ran stock I've forgotten where it downloads it to
We used to pull them off the TF and upload them for the devs to incorporate into their custom ROMs
Well, went ahead and let it install.... and I'm still on .27??
Is it possible for the version code to get corrupted and misread by the routine that checks for updates???
Anything is possible with ASUS firmware, I dropped ASUS a long time ago
They dropped us even longer ago
I'm almost tempted to switch back to stock to check. I heard that it will still be .27 but they updated some of the firmware?
Maybe they have fixed my opengl issues... Not gonna get my hopes up.
Can someone verify what's new, if anything?

Apart from the OP of this thread, there is no-one else reporting an update, I think something just bugged out on his TF and downloaded the .27 update again
ASUS haven't updated the TF101 for a year or more, they aren't likely to start again now, and nothing is on their official firmware page for the TF101 either

Yes
The various threads around here are quite helpful. If you're rooted, you're going to have to go back to stock. The OTA update should then kick in.
There's a thread over in the Android Development Section (It's at the top) that is exactly what you're looking for.
So, yes there are certainly methods by which you can update to 5.1.1!

This is a detailed tutorial on how to return your phone to stock. You'll end up with a data wipe, so make sure to back up anything you want to keep. You'll want to do this first. Nothing should go wrong (no guarantees though, as always), just make sure you pick up the H950 version of the system file (and put this in the root directory of your internal storage, and rename it to "system.img" if isn't already.)
Easy Restore/Recovery/Unbrick Tool for LG G Flex 2
You'll reboot to your bloated stock system, and you should be able to get the OTA update. If you come across the "Please wait 24 hours and try again" message, just go manually set your date and time ahead, that should get it working.
Then you'll want to use this link to update to flash a 5.1.1 (rooted) system file (similar to the way you did it before).

After a great deal of tediousness, you can install Titanium Backup and remove all of the bloatware. Obviously, be cautious, you might break things (and then you'll need to factory reset, yet again). In the near future I'll post a thread of all the bloatware I removed without any issue.
EDIT: I've created a freezable bloatware list for those of you unsure what's safe and what's not. The thread is here:
Ti Backup Bloatware Freeze List
Once you're done with that, if you're brave enough, you can install the XPosed framework (even though the bootloader is locked) using this link:
XPosed G Flex 2
The process is a bit sketchy, the extended periods of black screen are a bit foreboding, but it worked like a charm.
I am also in the same boat. Not receiving OTA, tried factory reset and date+1 doesn't work
Has anyone outside the US or AT&T network been able to update? Perhaps it works with a VPN? I haven't been able to update my brand new phone with zero modifications.
Im outside US, and i haven't got the OTA, i been trying changing the date and factory reset every now and then...
I will try a VPN and see how it goes.
Yes
When I returned to stock 5.0.1 I got the ATT OTA update. I'm in the US.
I don't claim to know the intricacies of flashing, but there are H950 5.1.1 system images floating around these boards. Could you flash one of those while on stock 5.0.1? I'm not sure. We do have an unbrick tool though so you'd probably be able to recover.
Let me know if anyone skips the part where they let the phone update itself, and go straight to flashing 5.1.1.
I just bought this phone brand new in the box because I heard the update was out on ATT, not for me I guess.
If you're already on 5.1.1 and you try to recover with the 5.0.1 image you will brick your phone.
As far as receiving the update notification on the AT&T version, I had to change the date forward a few days. I would check for updates after each date change and eventually got the notification. If that doesn't work, do a factory reset and try again.

Sounds like a direct flash upgrade is a no go then. I also set my device forward a few days (like a week) to get the update.
I Just ordered this phone and will be using it on cricket wireless, does anyone know if I'll need an active at&t sim card to get the 5.1.1 update or will I be able to get the update with my cricket wireless sim card?
Nope
Using a Straight Talk SIM myself and I got the OTA update just fine.

THANK YOU! after 7 painful days this solved my issue! you are awesome I never would have thought to take off auto time and date and jump forward. In one day increments it wouldnt grab the OTA. First time i went to september and boom, I got it. !

Yes, went from 5.0.1 to 5.1.1
I used the method above of changing the date a month forward.. It went from saying up to date to giving me the ota
I hope the update isn't crop because I don't know much of rooting and roming. Hoping to learn stuff here as xda is full of some smart folks.
