I decided to compile my own how-to. It's not a one click solution but it's still easy if you can follow simple directions. It's also safe, effective and looks great when 3G service is connected. It also allows the change of only the icon so if you are running a custom rom or other icons, the icon pack won't be changed.
The guide looks long but it's just well broken down to make it very easy.
Your not going to get 4G LTE , so please, trolls can troll else where. This is simply something new to look at, lets begin!
*** This will only change the 3G Icon to 4G LTE, nothing else ***
USB Debugging must be checked. Settings>Applications>Development>check the USB Debugging box.
Please make a Nandroid or backup. Using a custom ROM or theme may cause your wallpaper to revert back to stock when phone restarts. Please make sure you place the icons on the root of your SD Card to begin, you can always move them around later.

Steps:
#1. Download the four files I have listed. It's the only four you need to change your icon. They have been named the correct file name already, place them anywhere that you can easily access them on your SD Card.
#2. Download & install Stericson's NinjaMorph from the market.
#3. Start NinjaMorph ( It will run a quick check, tap yes ) and tap on New Project.
#4. Navigate to /system/framework/framework-res.apk (Files will be extracted and a backup is created automatically)
#5. Go into /res/drawable-hdpi and find your stock 3G icon which will be named stat_sys_data_connected_3g.png.
#6. Tap on the file and it will ask you to find the image you want to replace it with in a new screen ( your SD Card root ).
#7 Find the file with the 4G LTE connected logo named stat_sys_data_connected_3g.png , tap it.
** Please make sure your icons actually apear. It will show the icon when you go to select it. If it's not valid, a big X or nothing, please do not continue and let me know. Just a small precaution to take.**
#8. You will get a warning asking if you're really sure you want to replace it, tap yes. A little window will quickly flash " item should have been replaced, what do you want to change now? "
#9. Repeat the process, tap res/drawable-hdpi, find your stock 3G in icon named stat_sys_data_in_3g.png, tap it.
#10. Find the file with the 4G LTE inlogo named stat_sys_data_in_3g.png , tap it.
#11. You will get a warning asking if you're really sure you want to replace it, tap yes. A little window will quickly flash " item should have been replaced, what do you want to change now? "
#12. Repeat the process, tap res/drawable-hdpi, find your stock 3G inandout icon named stat_sys_data_inandout_3g.png, tap it.
#13. Find the file with the 4G LTE inandout logo named stat_sys_data_inandout_3g.png , tap it.
#14. You will get a warning asking if you're really sure you want to replace it, tap yes. A little window will quickly flash " item should have been replaced, what do you want to change now? "
#15. Repeat the process, tap res/drawable-hdpi, find your stock 3G out icon named stat_sys_data_out_3g.png, tap it.
#16. Find the file with the 4G LTE out logo named stat_sys_data_out_3g.png , tap it.
#17. Tap on the blue arrow on the bottom right corner.
#18. Tap on Finish Project.
#19. Tap on framework-resapk (NinjaMorph will now package/create the apk).
#20. You will get a warning asking if you're sure you want to overwrite the apk, tap yes.
#21. You will now get a warning asking if you want to zipalign, tap no.
#22. Tap ok on the next warning.
#23. It will ask you if you want to delete the project, you can choose what you want. ( I choose no )
Your phone will now reboot itself with the new icons in place. Enjoy!
Thank you. It worked flawless. Now i can mess with my friends at work that have droid x's. This will be priceless.

I'll try and work on this but if anyone can get these to me sooner, I wil upload them and update my post. However, it's not just white font as stand alone, it's in a black box so it will work for the meanwhile but yea, solid black would be cool as well.
Used Ninja Morph before and it worked flawless...Great Job
You can follow the how to make themes thread and change the color of the 4g text yourself. Just a thought.

Are you sure you saved the project and your phone restarted? If so, it all should have went through completely. The fact that you still have your 3G icon is a sign that something didn't get saved or you changed the image to something else.
So just to make sure, when you saved the images to your SD card, did they show up? You should have been able to see the 4G icon. Second, repeat the process. If it restarts and looks like it went through but your 3G icon is there then it might be because of your image. What is the icon you already changed?

Ok my phone restarted and ninjamorph said it was done. But when the phone came up it still showed 3g icon. When I go into my gallery I see the 4g lte icons there. I repeated process several times and same result. I even went to my backup rom and tried it and it also did the same. In this rom I didn't change anything in ninjamorph before. One thing that I noticed is when I go to replace the 3g icon in ninjamorph and select the 4g icon it says it should be replaced but it still shows 3g. I then put another image other than the 4g icon and it changed the 3g icon in ninjamorph. The image was in a .png format but why would that work but not 4g icon? ??? Do I have to push it or do something diffrent? ?? Any other suggestions?

cool n a little weird
i followed these steps perfectly.. the whole 4g icon worked, however when i went into my messaging.apk it didnt display any names, or contact photos.. just numbers.. went into my accounts and nothing was there.. doing a reboot right now.. see what happens.
update: after reboot the issue was still there.. i opened the market to see if it let me in and i had to login to my gmail.. dont know why this happened but hopefully me logging back into gmail solves any and all sync issues.. kinda weird. thanks for the icons btw! pretty nice eye candy
Just log back in into your Gmail account. I am not sure why it would have logged you out, it never logged me out from changing a simple res image. However, on my girlfriend's OG Droid, it had logged her out but from changing the notification drop down. Coincidence? Not sure lol.
Glad it worked out!

Hi all.
Just got a quickie...can anyone tell me what this notification icon is? Both it and the blank progress bar won't go with rebooting the phone.
It's a sensation with ICS and not rooted...

Looks like incomplete download. Try to clear cache for internet if won't work then clear data as well.

Aargh - just realised you can't see the stupid notification icon that goes with it.
It's a bit like a signal strength indicator or a wifi icon - it has 3 bars increasing in size from left to right.
Sorry - it was covered up by the tray - next time it happens, I will grab a screenshot
If it anyone knows what it is though in the meantime, please let me know as I'm pretty sure it goes with the progress bar
Cheers, Smiffy.
Also suffering from exactly this problem.
Reboot a few times, with and without fast boot.
Wondering if there was any progress on this.
Thanks

Watching an html5 video in full screen on chrome beta seems to trigger it. it also appears out of the blue sometimes.
Screenshots attached. Its that faint circle on upper left hand corner.
I also get this, but i get it whenever I'm reading an article in pocket, and sometimes the whole status bar dims and some of the icons disappear until I pull it down. Are you on sense jellybean?

i've been wondering the same thing.
Yes. stock rooted jelly bean, so im sure its not a mod.
been trying to figure this out as well,
curious are you guys using google now by any chance?
im on cm10.1 and i get that same thing every so often im beginning to think its google now or something since i always use it for weather. but i could be wrong.
I may have solved the mystery. I pushed the SystemUI.apk file to my computer to analyze it and that icon is called ic_sysbar_lights_out_dot_small.jpg .
This is supposed to be shown on devices with soft navigation buttons like the Galaxy Nexus when in "Lights out" mode to replace the back, home and task switcher buttons with faint circles so you can ,say, watch a movie in full screen and not be distracted by the buttons.
I have no idea why it's being shown in the notification area.. maybe Google added it as an additional visual cue in JB, and HTC didn't bother to remove it?
Anyway, I'm pretty confident that's what it is.

SlideOver is part of me and my brother's Sliding Messaging Pro project. This is only part of what it can do within our app, but we decided to release this part for free so that users can use this incredible feature without being confined to Sliding Messaging Pro!
This app is meant to be used alongside your messaging app of choice, whether that is the stock app, Go SMS, Handsent, Textra, or any of the other 3rd party messaging apps available on the Play Store. It is meant to extend upon that apps functionality and give you extra features that aren't present in most/any apps.
Features:
- An always on "bubble" to access your latest messages from anywhere (without even leaving your current app!)
- Quickly reply to a new message with the Quick Peek option, brought up by a simple tap on the SlideOver bubble
- Easily move and manage the SlideOver bubble with a long press to drag option and a double click to change the sliver width option.
- The SlideOver bubble will show contact pictures and some of the message with a very cool animation on new SMS messages
- Option to "ping" the SlideOver bubble when the user unlocks the device and there is an unread message.
- Reply without pausing your YouTube and most other video services and games (something that usual quick reply boxes could never do!)
- TONS of customization options
- and lots of other stuff
Usage:
1.) Download SlideOver Messaging
2.) Open the main app to view the settings page and apply any of the settings you think fit!
3.) That's it! Now just wait for a new message to come though and view it via the SlideOver bubble and reply quickly to conversations via the quick peek dialog!
Notes:
Some 3rd party messaging apps block the text message receivers that I use to display the messages to the SlideOver bubble. It is a very easy workaround though luckily, simply uninstall and then re-install your 3rd party messaging app (such as Go SMS) and the messages will come up in both your notification tray (through the 3rd party app) and the SlideOver bubble (through my app).
Very simple fix
If you like what we have done here, support us through a purchase of Sliding Messaging Pro! As I said, that app takes the functionality of SlideOver to a whole new level with an awesome pop-up reply dialog and some other neat customization and features!
Hope you enjoy!

It is because android is killing the service as you run out of memory, you can check the foreground service option and that will put a persistent notification that will stop it from killing the service.
Restarting your phone will also clear up memory if you really don't want to use the persistent notification option.

I have a rooted S4 and I have plenty of available memory, you think that is the issue. Only issue with persistent it that you get stuck with the
new text icon in your system tray.

Android has to move around and allocate memory for different processes. Believe me, that is the problem. That is how services work in android, it gets killed to make room for other apps service. That is the problem, android kills background tasks when it thinks the system doesn't need them, even if they are being used. That is the point of turning it into a foreground service.
I realize that the persistent notification causes an icon in the notification drawer because that is how the task is turned foreground and tells android to keep it working all the time.
I lol'd at the discussion above. ANYWAYS...

I have the same issue; nothing to do with memory or the service getting killed.
For some reason it keeps resizing the the circle to zero. Going into settings and resizing it back fixes it.
Similar issue with the placement of the box itself on the screen. If I drag it to a new location it will revert back to the top of the screen after a while.
Stock vzw Nexus.
Using Verizon HTC One.
When an incoming text arrives, clicking the contact bubble doesn't show the conversation like in the example photos. it's just blank. If I try to send a response anyway, the app crashes.
I really want this to work, because this is exactly what I'm looking for in a texting app. something that only handle the quick response, and not an entire replacement for the phone's messaging app. I have Ninja SMS installed as well, but I disabled that app before installing this one, because I expected the two not to play nicely. I will try again with Ninja SMS completely removed, and a reboot. in the mean time, I've sent a crash report from the phone.
EDIT: Removed Ninja SMS, rebooted. no resolution. At that point, the standard messaging also had notifications turned off, so I thought maybe by having an unread notification for a text, the app would pick up on it, but that didn't work either. I'm still getting a blank black SMS box, only the stock messaging app installed.
No rating for now, but once it works, it's a 5-star for sure!

Have you tried disabling the Double tap action, which allows for resizing the bubble? When I turn it on, on S2, it seems to resize to between 0-4% each time if I just quick double tap. I have this turned off anyway, but just tested after seeing your issue.

Double tapping changes the sliver width if that is what you mean?
And I don't save the location of the message box, whenever the service restarts it will revert back to the top of the screen, this was by design

One more thing, the sliver completely disappears when in landscape mode.

It is because I use a staic size down the screen instead of a percent. It was a feature that was requested with it in sliding messaging so that the bubble is gone when watching YouTube videos and such things. Just move the bubble up a little and it will be seen in landscape.
And yeah I should probably get the percent thing changed haha forgot about that one!
I like having mine towards the bottom where my thumb can reach I can suffer for now. lol.I odn't use landscape all that often
Is it possible to have a percent from top instead of units from top?

Of course it is possible, but I just don't think I want it that way, cause I can't hide it when certain apps or something like YouTube is up, and that us when it gets distracting and annoying, so I want the user to know it isn't going to adjust on landscape so if they want to see it, they will have to put it in the upper area. We will see though, I may make an option to use percent in landscape instead, don't know yet
I noticed the app got an update, but the update didn't fix my problem still can't read any messages coming thru, or reply to them.
It's interesting because the slider circle shows the contact photo and the message, but the box when I click the circle can't read the stuff. it's DEFINITELY finding the text at first, then not knowing what to do with it. what a mystery!

You are correct, the changelog didnt say it was fixed, and it hasn't been. i was out of town all weekend and that update changed a total of 2 lines of code. just added a function in there for a request from someone else.
The problem is the same one that many startup texting apps have on android, since there is no documentation, some OEM's do things with sms differently. HTC saves their messages differently than others, including google, so i can't read them in from the database. the reason that they show up on the bubble when it is incoming is because i pull that information from the broadcast that is sent and it is very easy to manage.
I know how to fix it, but it will take some time, and that is a luxury that i don't have much of right now, I am a college student and am very busy with my classes. So no, it hasn't been fixed yet, but i know how from sliding messaging. I will get around to it as soon as i can.
EDIT: there ya go, did it this morning. You will have to override stock, it is the second to last option under the settings menu.
I didn't mean to sound impatient. I saw by the changelog that it wasn't fixed. it was just funny for me because I saw the update and thought "oh yay!" then tried it again and said "oh damn."
thanks so much! I'l try it right away
EDIT: I found the problem. If I uncheck Quick Peek: Unread Only, then everything is fixed, even without checking the stock override option.

Gave it a try and liked it a lot. But one thing stops me from buying and keep using it: on my Samsung Galaxy S9 it uses only half of the screen hight when pulling down. Intended or a bug?
Love the app and bought it right away after testing it for a couple of hour.
I love how I can reply messages frombthe lockscreen without unlocking the phone.
Now, is it possible to make it not going to home screen everytime opening the shade from inside and app?
I'm using note 10+ with one ui 2.1. Everything else is working fine.

Nope, i'm using one hand operation+ from samsung for back gesture and opening the shade. It can open the shade no problem, no glitch, but everytime the shade open, the app i'm currently on was stopped and goes to home screen. The shade is still open, only the app behind it gets closed and goes to home screen.
Update:
Tried your suggestion to use edge trigger, it works. It can open the shade without closing the app underneath it.
So I guess I have to adjusting edge trigger and one hand operation+ for now.
Looks Great! Real smooth and Beautiful

Any idea why? I think I gave it all the permissions asked.

When I click on any notification to enter it - nothing happens.
Any idea why? I think I gave it all the permissions asked.

Check again, mine have Mi Note 10 and everything is working
Incredible app, purchased it. Although 1 issue I have is when I swipe down on home screen to pull down, it pulls down the stock one, not power shade, is it possible to change this and I've just missed the option some where?,
I am receiving system notification on lock screen. Are there any custom notification for the lock screen as well?

There is an option to always overlay the stock one in Extras>Override system panel.
On my samsung note 10+ with one ui 2.1 it's working without turning on the override system panel after restarting the phone.

Whatsapp notification always falls under the silent notification section. Is it a bug?
On the stock one it isn't.

Try to grant the "display pop-up in background" permission for the app which you want to open.

Does that get solved if you disable the Power Shade Headsup feature?

I'm not using power shade headsup.
Nevermind, the message moved into the silent notification section after i've replied it and once a new message came in it is out from the silent notification section.
All good now. Everything is working as intended.

That worked although it pulls both down now when I am on home screen. I have a S20 Ultra, still good app none the less

Still nothing. The problem is with EVERY app's notifation. it just doesn't open it from power shade
Did I miss some permission ?
Any ideas? I'm using Gboard and in notifications when I reply to a Whatsapp message, one press of space bar makes two spaces.
When I use a tile from a third party app, it doesn't change status in the settings display, though it does actually do the action of on/off (just remains never illuminated). And on my phone (sony) there is a weird bug, which is that if you use the shade to switch between light and dark, the navbar buttons may not change color properly. Everything works fine with stock or changing in settings.
Great App! I like it since my phone's manufacturer doesn't bother to implement accent color. This app give me a chance to customize my quick settings tiles. One issue is that even I have enabled Override system panel, the swipe down gesture from my stock launcher is not perfectly overrided. I am using ASUS ROG Phone II with stock launcher.
Another problem is that if I enable Brightness slider in header, it no longer shows when expanded the notifications. Can't I have it in both situations?

Yes, you need to grant that permission to the app which you want to open from notifications, not only to Power Shade.
