Vibrant getting Froyo tomorrow -- Offical. - Captivate General

Awesome!
"Going forward, Brodman explained, Samsung hopes to keep all handsets up to date within 3 to 5 months of Google releasing a new version of the OS. "
Lets hope they stick to that.

so, samsung has had the 2.2 upgrade out since november...
well if it took tmo all this time to add wifi calling, since att doesnt have that feature one can REASONABLY assume that ATT is just run by douches.

It's safe to assume that anyway.
But good for our Vibrant brothers and sisters. Maybe this is the beginning of the end of Samsung and the carriers dragging ass on these upgrades, but who knows. They better get to work on Gingerbread if they want to keep that 3-5 month schedule.

"So what was the hold-up? It was purely technical, Brodman said—it wasn't about marketing, payments or sales. Samsung sent its base 2.2 upgrade to T-Mobile in late November, and with the holiday season, it's taken until now for T-Mobile to work out the kinks and integrate its own features."
When will these carriers realize that loading phones with their bloatware does no good! Simply release the plain base 2.2 update!

3-5 months. Yeah, that's totally happening.

its pretty clear in the case of the vibrant that t-mobile deserves the brunt of the blame for the hold up as they have had their hands on the update since september.
Is there any reason to believe att hasn't had the update in their possession just as long?
not to absolve samsung but they have taken most of the abuse on this and it looks like the carriers are the hold up at this point and have been for 2.5-3 months

According to one of the screenshot posted on AT&T web site, our Froyo version is UCJK1. We got first Froyo leak late sept, UCJI6. Second in late Oct., UCJJ4. So, UCJK1 should be around late Nov.
So I guess AT&T had the Froyo build the same time as T-mo.

Agreed! They should include a digitally signed file or something per carrier that labels the phone for what carrier and model and then they can upload their scrap to the marketplace. That way the app wont work unless you are on stock carrier os with signed file and the app could verify the correct file info.
Sure it could be ripped from the os but if att had their way id still be on stock 2.1. But for the small amount of users who is mainly comprised of us here at xda, carriers wont have to worry as most people probably do not root their phones.

Woah, looks like somebody leaked the screenshot of Froyo on the Captivate. Maybe AT&T has a surprise for us very soon? Who knows.

Looks like Sprint will be following T-Mobile's lead.

i doubt the captivate is going to get 2.2, ATT is miserable slow with their upgrades and theres not enough push on twitter..the tmobile users bombarded the samsung and tmobile twitter accounts with requests...i dont see the same amount of effort on the ATT side

Seems like a few people that trusted Samsung all along *cough* weren't so dumb after all.

Removed from Vibrant Forum.

Let's take a look at my last phone... the Samsung Epix (quit laughing at me).
Installed with WinMo 6.1 out of the box with the promise of 6.5 in the coming months.
Phone works pretty well, great GPS, however some people are having a random error appear on their phone, the dreaded "Slog dump".
ATT/Samsung announce update, everyone gets excited about 6.5... except it isn't. It's to fix slog dump error, which it does - while totally crippling the GPS. Instead of an instant lock on 8+ satellites, several minutes of waiting might get you 4 or 5.
The promised deadline of the 6.5 update comes and goes. again and again and again and well you get the idea.
Finally after everyone has given up (or turned to XDA) the official update is released. The GPS is restored and works better than ever before, and Microsoft has already announced wp7, making our update already obsolete.
At this point I have swore of Samsung forever, at least until the Captivate shows up for free at Radio Shack.
lesson learned?
Good things come to those who wait
or probably better
those who don't learn from the past....

I contacted Samsung today regarding a Froyo update for the Captivate. Take a look at the image below.
Hey, I tried right?????????

[Fake-Unrooted-ROM] Why unroot? Flash this! Stock Froyo.

Returning your Evo anytime soon? Why unroot when you can just flash a completely plain Jane looking stock Froyo ROM that's lacking the Superuser apk? The geniuses over at Sprint or Best Buy will never be able to tell the difference. This is netarchy's HTC OTA Froyo 2.2, *FINAL*, build 3.36.651.6 (Rooted) Odexed ROM, the -only- thing that has been changed is the removal of the Superuser Permissions apk.
Wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache, then flash.

It goes further than just the rom...truth be told, there's a system they can actually look in to see what rom the phone is running...(I worked for Sprint), but I don't think they're smart enough to look at it...I'll post shots of what it looks like...sometime this week...I've been meaning to give a shout to all the Devs to add something that allows a person to make the Rom look stock...

Yeah, this ROM totally preys on the not so clever reps that work at stores like Sprint and Best Buy. No offense, of course. I actually returned my last Evo with a stock ROM that was still sporting the Superuser Permissions apk. They didn't catch that.10 times out of 9 they're not going to even know about rooting or what to look for to spot a rooted device.
Anyone working for them that wouldnt catch this, wouldnt catch a non stock rom no matter what it is. Anybody actually looking to tell if a phone is rooted will look for a custom recovery.

I highly doubt any rep is looking for a custom recovery, although that would be the thing to look for. But seeing the Superuser Permissions app might cause a rep to grow a brain and do some investigating, which could potentially lead to some problems returning your Evo, if you are in fact, returning it rooted. I'm just trying to circumvent some hassle by eliminating that possible hitch.
Sheer genius.

LOL even with a custom rom and boot screen Sprint took my phone back. Who cares? rooting doesn't effect your hardware so why would they even care? Flashing an official RUU undoes rooting for the most part anyway (minus unrevoked forever)

1st of all EVERYONE I worked with at Sprint and half of the upper management have rooted Evos, even rooted Epics. We know, we're not idiots you idiot
The reps aren't really going to care because the account that device was active on can get charged up to full retail for the new device if the Evo is discovered to be rooted. Most of the time these phones get recycled as refurbished replacement phones, and there's a simple check (a couple actually) to determine root, with or without Superuser. Got an e-mail about this from our service technicians about going into the About Phone section and how the phone betrays itself.
That and the bootloader screen shows S-Off at the top for most rooted Evo's which takes all of 60 seconds to check.
On a side note, it really is unlikely Sprint is wasting man-power checking every single evo coming in, especially with everyone trading up to the 3D. Just throwing it out there, YOU REALLY SHOULD JUST UNROOT the damn thing it's easy and could (possibly) spare you north of $450. I mean really, even if it takes an hour you theoretically made almost $500 an hour.

I'm pretty sure this method is intended primarily for those taking their phones in for service.
When actually sending the phone back to Sprint (to take advantage of their insurance, for example), a full unroot should always be done. That's where the technicians will be more likely to poke and prod.

the driod incredible mopped the floor with everything else but that may have been a fluke. posibly saved in memory, the stores roof did a good job of blocking gps because even the motorolas never got a fix better than 30 meters. my phone eventually got 10 meters but quickly lost it. the driod increadible had a lock at 7 meters before i even got maps open on my phone! if that wasn't luck i must say im impressed! still im happy with my current gps quality. im not envious of the incredible as smooth as the os is and as good as the gps appears to be the snapdragon cant process 3d to save it's life.

GPS issues aside..you couldn't pay me enough money to jump back to Verizon or Sprint. With out a doubt the worst c/s,store techs and management I have ever had to deal with in my life at both companies. Also..I compared a brand new Droid X to my Captivate 2 nights ago at work..Actually..there was no comparison..the signal quality, speed of browsing..both through the phone and on the Internet..the Cappy won hands down..and this really really irked the Droid owner.Hell she even ask me to load the Fancy Widget weather for her because she hated the lame stock one on her phone..and wanted hers to look like mine. The quality of the Captivates screen was plainly evident too...She just couldn't get over how smooth and crystal clear the movies I had loaded played and looked...
So..Good luck if you decide to do this..but personally..I would at least wait and see if the 2.2 update gets delivered as stated and fixes the gps issue for you.The grass may look greener on the other side of the fence..but may not be taste any better...

now im off topic but the thing is that att corperate is holding them back in my area, we have been waiting for 3g for years they have teased us about it's coming in 2months since i got my iphone or even prior to. they installed the updates in september and the store reps said 29september was the day. now they say they dont know when. the network was tested in september causing no internet, spotty texting and dropped calls for 3 weeks then about 12 hours of 3g then back to the old system.
the verizon rates look identical to mt att plan, they have unlimited data again, the calls dont drop when the phones have good service like my bad network policies in this area do to lack of bandwidth and they have vetrans discounts. att has active duty discounts but not vetrans, although i did get them to apply a discount do to there own ignorance but if it they catch it i can loose it.
ill certainly wait for froyo on the facsinate before i choose and read there forums ect. and i may wait for a 4g phone. att has zero press on hspa+ that i can find and we cant even get a hsupa enabled phone. att can call and surf the web at the same time and as far as i know verizon cant (i actually do that quite often), hopefully 4g will allow that(a question i forgot to ask), the store rep say 4g will be in my are in the spring(they are usually misinformed so ill see)
roll over minutes are a plus on att.
obviously i havent made a decision, i was just comenting on my gps performance being on par with motorola with an unofficial froyo build.

GPS Test, it's on the market.
I've had my captivate for about six or seven weekd now and could not get a lock at all when it was stock for the first hour or two that i had it. I started flashing roms and have tried a bunch including most Cog roms and several with the setiron kernel. since going to the perception build 3 and now 4, i lock in a matter of seconds and stay locked. this thing is fantastic now. Before this I was just using my old Nokia E71 for navigation. Not any more. My Captivate is great now.
My captivate looks like the first phone all the time. Stock. Exchange your phone if GPS is a problem.

That will be too nice of AT&T. No, you only get such notification TWO months AFTER the update has been pushed out. In this case, it is the old JH7 update.
Doesn't matter anyway, I'm running Doc's V6.1 2.2.1 JPY
I've been seeing this same topic repeatedly being brought up more so since the Nexus S came out. I figured I'd make an attempt and try to talk to someone semi official about it. See below:

Well, at least that chat seems to put paid to the idea we'll be getting 2.2 in 2010.
I also recieved 3 texts this morning about this, but my phone cannot connect to ATT servers so I called them to ask what this was all about. I'm on the newest JH7 as I just got this as a replacement phone a few weeks ago. I kept this new phone unrooted and unmodified for the moment to see if any new OTA's would load to my phone as I had issues with the OTA for JH7, I believe that I used DG's update.zip on the old phone to get it. Anyway, I told the tech at ATT what version that I was running and if they were really trying to push a new update out. He stated that it is a new update and the reason that I can't connect to the servers is that they are probably overloaded now with others trying to download it. I also asked if it is the 2.2.1 update and he said that he believes so, but no definitive answer as of yet. And yes, I'm also sick of a new thread about a possible update every day, so that's why I called ATT and figured that I'd share what I found out with our community. I just hope that the tech is correct in assuming that it is 2.2.

OMG, you believe a tech that says " he believes so".
When the push comes down, i'm still betting on St. Patrick's Day, you'll know about it. It'll be all over the internet.
Yep, I'm an idiot.............trusted ATT, didn't want to fall in to that trap. Worst part is, that I should've know better, I've even followed the numerous other posts. Anyway, this afternoon I chatted to another rep and I guess that they were trying to push the JH7 update to my phone even though it came to me preloaded, which makes complete sense
The second rep stated it wouldn't be available until next year....

Perhaps Rogers is just being more honest/realistic......I wouldn't be shocked if we don't see it for quite a while either.
Never have got a text message about updates but I did get a email from Samsung to advise me the Media Hub is coming soon!

You clearly didn't see the debacle that was the Canadian Captivate launch. Bell and Roger's both announced their SGS phones around the beginning of August, Bell had theirs out in a week, Roger's said within the month. No one got their phone until November. I don't remotely trust anything they say, and besides, they said this before their phone even came out.
amazed that people (that frequent XDA forums now less) would be so heartbroken about lack of official froyo.
sure i will probably take the official release for a spin when it gets here but i am guessing it won't last more than 24-48 hours before i re-flash a custom 2.2 or custom gingerbread which may here before official 2.2.
There have been multiple quality roms froyo roms available for months...and most of them i am betting offer more in the way of speed and in many cases stability than the official bloated version will.
Why not stop opining and learn how to put your phone to its full potential?
(I know some will say they don't want to void there warranty and shouldn't have to.....that latter of which i agree with.....but if your afraid of rooting and flashing why would you be @ XDA?)

I get kinda tired of seeing this same response in here. There's a lot more to this place than just ROM flashing and rooting. I have found a ton of info, mods, apps and upgrades in here for my Incite, Tilt 2 and now my Captivate and have never flashed a ROM on either of them. There is so much more to XDA than just cooked ROMs and insisting otherwise is just ignorant.
When you rule out modes that require a rooted device....probably 90% of whats posted in the forum involves a process that "voids" your warranty.
If someone wants froyo so badly they should install it. It is available to them and is faster and as or more stable than the stock 2.1 releases (+ most of them have improved gps performance).
The same people who post day in day out their need and want for froyo will move on to do the same thing about gingerbread within 24 hours of having their official froyo while most of the visitors here will already be running gingerbread courtesy of the rich development community @ XDA.
Do i think its stupid that it takes them so long to push and official release....yep...but it seems to be an issue that has been a problem more for android as a whole than for just samsung or att. The same thing that make android great the open nature and a variety of handsets is the same thing that hinders prompt updating of new firmware. I see it being the biggest thing that could hurt android in the long run. I think it also one of the reasons we have a much weaker selection of high-end games for android devices. The gaming potential of the galaxy s line-up is much greater than the iphone but developers seem hesitant go all in to develop for the platform.

The late releases are going to plague any developer they always have and always will. All we can do is hope its a quality one so we don't have to downgrade till they fix the new bugs. Galaxy s is a fairly new line compared to the iPhone and while superior its going to take a while for big game developers to get there feet wet. They haven't had as much time support or desire to try something new when they have there old faithfuls. I do think android is a lot better that iPhone speaking from experience on all platforms but there is pros and cons coming from development and Apps on both sides.

Called at&t CS to get a replacement and Denied

my hox has the led bleed problem so i tried to get a new one since im still in my 30day exchange. no one in miami has one so i was told to call CS and try to get it replaced after 30 min of being transfered from department i get to someone trying to get me a replacement and then spoke to a supervisor whom told me the manufacture is calling back these devices and at&t is stoping the sales till further notice. the only options i have is stay with the phone and deal with it or send it back and get a refund. this sux the phone is GREAT im an iphone convert and now i need to move back . has anyone else herd this or does anyone have connections with at&t to see if there is any validation. i dont really want to go back to the iphone... ive been spoiled with the hox.
Yep, was told the same thing. They are basically not selling this phone for the near future. No exchanges or sales. I would hold off for the Galaxy S3 anyways.

I'm mostly scared about getting replacements... I'm going to verify with AT&T today. If they are stopping sales of HTC One X's I'm returning my phone.

Wifi mainly. Also, I am one of the unlucky bastards stuck on 1.85 without root or an unlocked bootloader. Sadly I do love the One X, but these two issues are killer to me.
Mine hasn't been rooted or updated. Doesn't reboot or anything like my last ones but do have some battery discharge issue. If the phone is turned off for a few days battery is dead when turned back on. All 5 of my One X's did the same thing though. I had to do alot of returning to get a good one but am just giving up on this phone. Loving my Galaxy Note more.
Anyone want to buy it before I return it? $500.
I'm forcing my exchange now over the phone. I processed an exchange LAST week and today I received a package for a refurbished iPhone 4 8 gig. Not even a 4S wtf? I was pretty pissed so now I'm on hold. They're offering a free Bluetooth headset for the inconvenience. Will update later.

But this is HTC's flagship device. Do we really think they are going to let ATT just call it quits? I'm inclined to think not. Maybe this is just confusion over the slowed sales due to many models being held up at customs? No offense to ATT's CSRs, as they've always been very helpful for my preexisting issues or account questions, but they've never seemed to have any idea of things to come, nor have they led onto anything if they did know in the first place. And I really mean that in the most genearl sense. I get way better info online and from well-connected sales rep (hard to find) at the stores who are in good with regional manufacturer reps.
hmm, all this talk has me nervous. I have until this Sunday to return the phone within my grace period and I am afraid if the phone is pulled, then the future looks very bleak for any development or support. I don't want to be stuck with what could be an excellent phone for the next 2 years with practically no support.
This is HTC's flagship phone, I can't see it just being yanked permanently off the shelfs??

We need more people contacting AT&T and confirming that this phone will no longer be sold and that it will be discontinued. If this is the case I am returning the phone to Amazon this instant.
I called yesterday. There was nothing in the csr system about the hox being discontinued.

Update, just got off the phone. They're pushing my order through and sending me one in priority mail. Hoping I don't get a defective phone this time. Definitely don't want to go through this again.

I really hope it doesn't get discontinued. I had a Galaxy Nexus on Verizon but I couldn't deal with the purple discoloration of every device I looked at (f'n Pentile AMOLED) and terrible battery life. So I switched carriers for the One X hoping for an eventual Cyanogenmod ROM.
If development stops because the phone gets pulled, I don't know if I'd want to keep it. On one hand, it satisfies the geek in me to have something that was only sold for a short time, thus being "rare", on the other, I really couldn't deal with using HTC Sense forever.
UPDATE: I just called and the representative said that they've discontinued taking orders but they have no information on whether the device itself was being discontinued or not. She did see on her computer (in AT&T's system) that there's a customs delay, so they had to stop taking orders until it clears.
UPDATE 2: I just called HTC. A customer relations person called me back and told me that the One X is not being held at customs, and that the only reason it's backordered/out of stock is because they were ordered over capacity. I asked if they'll be sending more to AT&T any time soon and she said "Oh, absolutely."
She also asked me where I heard that from, I didn't mention XDA, but I told her that an AT&T rep told me that they're not taking orders for the One X because they're being held at customs. Again, she asserted that they're not being held at customs, and proceeded to tell me that she will have to communicate with AT&T to clear that up.
I tried to press 4 during the call (Google Voice) to record it, but it didn't work.
Call them yourself. Record the call if you can and throw it on Vocaroo: http://www.htc.com/us/contact/contact-us But I'm pretty sure for legal reasons, you'll need to ask if you can record them before you do it!!!!!
You'l most likely be transferred to a voice mail and receive a call back within a few minutes
Last edit: I just wanted to add that it was really cool of her to get back to me. I'm not a blogger or anyone important at all. Just one of millions of customers, and she took time out of her day to call me back. That's pretty cool.
Why would this phone get discontinued? Wouldn't HTC just release a software update to get past the apple troll patents?
The one xl isnt exclusive to the US. There are other countries getting this phone, albeit only lte capable countries which there aren't too many (Canada, Australia, Germany).
Edit: just noticed the late radio bands are slightly different, pretty sure that doesn't matter too much since the hardware is practically identical.
I think I've decided what I'm going to do. Return this phone and get the international. same price for me since I bought off contract.
id say its very likely they were held up at customs, or they just are backordered.
another big possibility is quality control issues (that they obviously wouldn't admit)

Android 7.0 ^_^

T-Mobile LGV10 H901 MM ~ V10_H901_V20E_DeOdexed_Build_007-signed by Eliminater74 ~ Unofficial TWRP 3.0.2 ~ Xposed version 85
So, I wonder how Google is going to work out the system partition issue for devices that weren't designed to run dual systems when an update occurs? Interesting thing to consider.
This is all nonsense. The update will come out when it comes out. There are a number of factors that go into the release of an update, none of which can be accurately measured.

Google has already said that seamless updates aren't coming to current and older Nexus devices (http://www.androidpolice.com/2016/0...e-new-seamless-update-feature-from-android-n/), so I wouldn't expect for any pre-2016/7 device.
Rubbish.
Nougat is incoming according to the T-Mobile website. It will probably be a month or two before it becomes approved and and T-Mo put their bloat on it. But If the website is anything to go by, then yes the V10 is confirmed to receive 7.0. Strange that the G4 will not be getting it...

But can we root 7.0?

One thing is true though. LG is one of the fastest to roll out major updates. I recall from my LG G4 was that it was the first phone to receive MM apart from Nexus.
This time around also the G5 is probably their priority. Once LG rolls it out then, T-Mobile is also gonna take their time. So it's gonna take a while.

so on a side note, my v10 just crapped out on me, similar boot loop of death like the g4, i feel like it has a bad ground, it randomly was on charge and started to vibrate continuously and screen froze, i have 3 batterys i tried those but fail, i have really good and bad wires and tried those, some let it into twrp without touch working and some wire allow to twrp with touch working for short time b4 reboot freeze, and one wire allowed to twrp with touch but twrp touch was slow af. literally like 1 hour ago. trying to get my files off internal :/ good day turned to crap, thanks LG
There's really no use in speculating when we'll get 7.0. It'll happen when it happens. We probably won't get it until early next year, so not soon. We definitely won't get it when the v20 does, since it's LG's new darling, and they said it would be the first major Android phone to get Nougat. So of course they want it to be exclusive at first. Hell, LG might even change their mind and leave use stuck with Marshmallow. The v10 is already pretty much dead where development is concerned, why bother continuing to update an older device when there are better things ahead? Looking back on it, had I known in advance that the v10 wouldn't have much development, I probably wouldn't have bought it. This is my first LG and maybe my last. But it still works so I'm going to hold onto it until it dies. Lesson learned, life moves on.

I think so. We will get it somehow. Even if it is the last update I'm fine with it. At least well get some closure and hopefully the software will be similar to the V20. Perhaps the Vietnamese Rom cookers will do a port. I'm using the H960 20m port on my H901.
Second half of the year seems a bit long to wait but maybe there will be a working version of xposed for nougat by then.
It's coming:
