Hardware buttons backlit? - G Tablet General

Are the hardware buttons of the G-tab backlit (eg, does the writing glow in the dark)? (home, settings, etc)
My wife thinks they look like they should be backlit, but they aren't lighting up. I'm not sure if this not-lit by design, or if the lights on our unit are broken.
Can anyone confirm if their G-tab buttons are backlit?

Not backlit.

If you're talking about the touch buttons next to the screen (search, home, menu, back) they are not backlit. There are some modders here that have tried diy projects to add LEDs or drops of glue to add a bead next to them so that you can either see them or feel them in the dark. ROMs like VEGAn have them as soft buttons on the status bar on the screen for you to use as well.
If you're talking about the hardware buttons like power and volume they are also not backlit.

Here is a simple mod to locate the buttons in the dark.
Simply cut a tiny groove in the plastic bevel next to the buttons. They should have been there from the beginning if you ask me.

What does that do? Allow you to "feel" where they are, or does this illuminate them in some way? If it is a feel thing, there are many ways to "mark" them with some tactile application for "feel".

Indeed, it just allows to feel, but away from the buttons themselfs who are touch sensitive (so you don't have a problem when you feel the wrong one and it feels you right back). It also cannot be rubbed off or become sticky with use (like glue beads, for example).

Button Savior located in the market is a nice solution for those not wanting to modify the exterior. It allows you to access the same commands on screen that the touch sensitive one do.

Wow, thx for that tip Mike - just what I was looking for!

Got a Problem with the screen (Very Unhappy)

Hello all, i have myself an 02 XDA Exec, but during the light of a soft reset
the screen is now working with fault
it looks like there is some sort of high contrast or the in could be bleading on the inside, but the touch feature works, will display pictures
Notice how the screen has different shades, but also patches in the corners of the screen, as ive mentioned the touch sensetivity works fine but the screen looks to be a bit pixelated and and in a different sort of contrast (i am currently reading up on the dis-assembly of it so if its something internal please say something about it)
and no i havnt banged it, smashed it, tried beating it up etc, i honestly dont know whats happened to it.

this is my today screen after a hard reset, basic windows mobile default, look at the different tones of colouring, the sort of slashes across the screen and the shades in the corner of the screen, and im not sure why, although i dont think it really can be ink bleading as when the phone is turned off the screen is as it should be, just off.
Now i will try out the camera on both sides, from the phone and from my camera
Camera's Side
Notice how the screen is in a sort of negative/contrasted style, not one im enjoying thats for sure, but coming from the phone the results are different
Exec Camera
notice how the camera still processes the image properly
which leads me to believe something is wrong with the screen
maybe some part of the frame is being pressed against it or something like that
i will be monitoring this thread closely and please help
With Many Thanks
Exemike
Does it have this pink tint in reality too? (not only on the shots?)
If it does (and a hard reset doesn't help), then, one of the color transfer wires may be dead or have "only" developed a contact error (or, plainly, they have just been removed from their socket. This happened a lot with other models.)
That is, I'm pretty much sure it's a cheaply fixable problem. Try disassembling your casing and try to rearrange the wires.
pink/purple tint, but the screen apears in perfect shape
any guides on getting into the screen,
thanks very much.

there are several; see the "smashed my Universal screen" threads; some of them link in the official HTC disassembling guides

another joystick solution

here is my solution
i have used 2 sided sticker(probably 3m but i'm not sure), a little thick one
cut the sticker about the hole in the joystick button
it shouldn't fit perfect, it must be a little smaller than the hole
stick it in the hole and place the button
i have used all the solutions explained here (cleaning, wd40, light sensor...) but none of them worked except this
also don't forget to clean the parts
here is a picture

actually i can't do it because i need to reopen the housing for this
but i can explain it in more detail
when you open the housing and open the joystick part of keypad, you'll see a joystick device and the button
you must remove the joystick button and at the back, you'll see a hole like in the pictures(don't worry about removing, just pull the button)
just cut a piece of two sided sticker(which must be a little smaller than the hole) and stick it in the hole
sticker should be thick one, probably thinner ones will not work
and don't forget to clean both device and button, i have used a lcd screen cleaner
then place the button back to the joystick device and close the housing
if it's not working well, try smaller sticker
hope this helps and fell free to ask...
also sorry for my english, it's not my native language

power button is killing me

My power button is completely flat, if not even recessed slightly. It still works without a problem, but it seems like its worse than it used to be.
Debating whether I want to return it, as I'm rooted and have the phone set up exactly as I like it.
Anyone else hate the power button?
If you're rooted you can always back the phone up, return it to stock ROM, return it, root the phone, you get back (either yours or the new one) and restore your backup.

I know. I want to go look at the phones that the store has and see if it's the same.
Sorry it's a big picture.

I found it difficult also, but I bought an otterbox case and it covers the buttons with a raised piece of rubber that actually works out a lot better for me.
Its a known problem that every HTC Inspire/Desire HD experiences. I got a case (Casemate Pop) and the rubber button on the case makes it easier to press.
My Case Mate has a rubber cover that helps me too. You may also consider the app "nolock" It bypasses your lock screen unfortunately but it will allow you to use your volume buttons to unlock.

I have one of those cases, makes it a little too bulky. I'm using a barely there case that doesn't cover the power button.

I might try that. Paired with lock screen widget, I'd never have to use the power button.
I hate it as well. I'm currently using Widgetlocker, which allows me to wake with the volume rockers as well. I try to alternate what I use to wake the device (3 options). HTC, for some reason, chooses to make all their power buttons like this. It's the reason why I returned my Tilt II back in the day.
One of the case mate or otter box cases can fix the issue. Its hard to say by just the picture but your button might be slightly more depressed. Check store units for comparison.

Why are the volume buttons the wrong way round?

Was this tablet made for never using in portrait mode or something?
Up to lower volume, down to increase? wtf?
Also, people say press volume down and power to boot into the bootloader (and I need to use the button on the right, even though this is technically up) and then on that screen it says press volume down again, but I need to press the button on the left this time
anyone know why they did this?
I don't really understand your issues with the bootloader sequences but I will agree that it seems ass backwards when you are holding the tablet in landscape with the buttons on top.
I would love to see Samsung (or some gifted XDA user )add the option to have the volume keys follow the UI.
You should be able to remap the volume keys to be reversed if you use the device predominantly in portrait mode.
But like Caldair said, I'd love to see them auto remap based on orientation.
I think basically what it boils down to is on the 7" its viewed more as an E-reader type device and so they assume portrait orientation so the button furthest from the power button is volume down as it points down but on the 10.1 it's more like a computer screen so they are in landscape mode so left in down and right is up, this is also seen in there positioning of the USB 30-pin connector (which denotes the "bottom" side of the device).
I just find it weird that you have 2 versions of basically the same device just different screen sizes and the volume buttons are ass backward from each other, makes things really screwy when you try to tell people how to get into download mode or recovery.
Frankly the 10.1 volume buttons is far less an issue then the decision on the 7 to put the speakers on the "bottom" which when your watching a movie or doing about 90% of things in android that are in Landscape all your sound comes from ONE side.
It is badly designed, compared to the previous version, I think they just didn't care.

[Q] Anyway to make the top left of the screen more accessible?

I love my nexus 5 but UIs that require me to touch the top left of the screen are hard to reach. Is there any way to apply a per app hack where the top bar can be stretched or maybe lowered? I appreciate I won't be using all of the screen but it will be worth it for a few specific instances e.g. gmail and hangouts.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying your problem is. Everything should be adjustable per your preferences by default. Maybe you can elaborate in more detail.
Had this issue with my Samsung note 2... One of the reasons I bought the nexus 5 is it fits my hands and my thumb can reach the entire screen. This doesn't answer your question but it was my solution to this problem.

Your picture actually did a great job of explaining what you meant to say. I understand now.
Silly question/statement, but do you know that pressing the "Back" arrow in most cases such as that should take your back to where you were. Most often, that specific option like you displayed, that you can't reach, can be activated the same way by hitting the back button.
There are however, plenty of apps and situations where you need to hit an option in the top left corner and the back button will NOT do this action. I have big hands and have gotten used to being able to tap something on any section of my screen.
You could try installing a mod/app to enable custom gestures in which you can swipe a gesture towards the right and set it to that function. (ex: gesture enabled when you swipe from the center of the right towards the middle, it activates a "back" option.
You can try installing "GMD Gesture Control" for this.
Just a suggestion?
Thanks for your reply! I didn't realise the back button could cater for some of these scenarios. I also didn't realise I could swipe from the left for a lot of these apps. This caters for most of the scenarios so I'm happy now, thanks!
Grabbing anywhere on the left edge of the screen and sliding right does the same as pressing the icon up high. Same goes go for play store.
good day.
