[Q] evo root+rom question - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

ok im pretty new to android and this site so don't be to harsh but if i root my evo and flash a different rom will i still get the official ota updates from sprint/htc? and if i accept the update will i just have the stock rom and no root? because i want to flash a gingerbread rom to my evo because i don't feel like waiting for the official update and then when the official update comes i want to get that and loose the root. so if someone can clarify what happens if i accept an update with root+custom rom it would help a lot.

You will no longer receive OTA updates if you use a non-stock version of Android.
Keep in mind, loading a non-stock ROM on your phone will void your warranty. Be sure to unroot your phone and put a stock ROM on it before you return your phone if you have to for any reason.

Ok thanks

what to do when update comes out if rooted

after reading the forums im getting different answers as a whole. I have a rooted tb and im running the blackhole rom... i should probably not check for or accept any updates for my tb right? because 1. it could unroot 2. it could brick it 3. it could just mess it up? are any of these possible or correct. thanks
I would not accept or check until the Devs have said it is ok if you want to stay rooted.
Most roms on rooted phones will not accept the update even if it shows up. It will tryto install but most likely fail because the signatures dont dont match...
you will be fine.
when it comes out the devs will have a rooted version..
You most likely will be running the update well before it's OTAed.

+1 gingerbread is a good example of this.
And if you tried to flash a stock ota update while rooted, you will lose root.
Just wait for a dev to post rooted version then just flash in hboot.

You don't need to worry about it. The new das bamf rom will look like th enew update anyway (actauly probably better) so just enjoy that for a little bit until the devs come out with a fix
Isn't an OTA usually an entire RUU? New hboot, new radios, new ROM? Or at least new radios and ROM. I think you could lose your S-on, couldn't you?
Ok, Forgive my terminology... Graphics guy here.. If we are rooted and S-Off and running the stock rom. How to we update to the new OTA to fix the random reboots etc and stay rooted? Do the devs release a special version after Verizon starts releasing it?

[Q] Anything we need to do before the update rolls out?

My phone's currently rooted (running CM7 if that matters). Since the OTA update for Sprint is supposed to start rolling out this Monday, is there anything I need to do in order to receive the update?
Will I need to unroot?
Is there some manual way of checking for the update on custom ROMs?

I have raised this question on two threads. I used Mikeyinid's rom for awhile and now have Oxygen rom and I have asked in both threads what would be done. People have told me that an update.zip would be released or the rom itself would be upgraded. Just keep your eye on your respective rom's thread and the developer should get everyone taken care of. As soon as the first member of this site gets the OTA, you know it will be posted and then applied to all the roms/kernels lol. We wont have to do anything but reboot to recovery and flash knowing these guys. I give it a few hours after it starts rolling out before they have it locked in lol

That actually makes a lot of sense! Thanks for the answer!
Honestly most of the fixes are gonna be in the radio. Personally I don't even care about the 2.3.5 stuff or whatever else is included. I just want to flash the new radio the second its available and I will happily wait for ROMs to the be updated from that point on
yea, all i care about is the radio too....GB reminds me if vista, everytime they fix a problem, it changes...2.3 2.3.2 2.3.3 2.3.4 ..... 2.3.5? just fix my radio and send me 4.0 !

You can try, depending on your ROM, but I seriously doubt anything you want to happen will come out of that. You might be stuck in a boot loop, it could brick it, it could just screw up all kinds of stuff. VERY bad idea in general. My advice:
Be patient.
im still running HTC Mecha.. I just used Revolutionary to root.. and still have everything running good on my stock ROM.

Mecha is the HTC codename for the device, much like the EVO 4G is known as the Supersonic and the Incredible S/Incredible2 as the Vivo/Vivow, respectively.
just be patient. Usually a workable, root version will be released shortly before or after the OTA goes live. I would not except an OTA on a rooted phone. just keep an eye out on XDA.
Since you're rooted and stock the best thing to do is to wait until they release a version of it so you can install it via recovery like already mentioned. If you accept an OTA update while rooted bad things will most likely occur.
You will not he able to install an ota if your rooted. This is due to the custom recovery. When the update checks the recovery, it will fail.

2.3.4 Update Issues

I am having issues updating my phone to 2.3.4. I have tried the LG Launcher but it is saying that my phone is currently up to date. I also tried updating my phone through the settings menu, but it did not work either because my phone is up to date. I want 2.3.4 to fix my bugs. Please help me? I am sorry if this is in the wrong forum or if this is already a discussed topic.
You need a custom from for 2.3.4 u can't get it from lg

Custom firmware I assume? T-Mobile said they are sending it out to people who haven't received the update though. I really don't want to root my phone because 1. I don't want any files that will give me viruses. 2. I don't know how to root phones. 3. I want ICS.
1. viruses still aren't an issue with android 2. its not hard to learn 3. I can almost guarantee you we'll get a custom ics rom well before before an official update, if official ever actually happens.

The OTA being pushed is 2.3.3 not 2.3.4, it is being redone for the users that did not get it the first time.
The G2x does not have an "official" update from LG to android 2.3.4. If you want 2.3.4 you have to root and flash a custom rom.

[Q] If i Root now 2.3.6, can I get carrier update ICS?

Just got upgrade from Captivate to SGS2 Skyrocket and itching to root, but heard ICS is coming from carrier soon (whenever that is), will I still be able to get the update OTA? or will I need to unroot and then try OTA update? or do I use the Keis on PC.
You would have to unroot and restore the stock rom before you could get the carrier update. I am going to probably root my i727R Rogers just because the carrier update will come with so much bloatware and still have the touch wiz on it

...don't you just Root again and remove bloatware? How will I know carrier is ready to update me unless I UN root.
As far as i know if your just stock rooted then you will see the update and just lose root if you do update. Release dates will depend on version. You can always check the forums to see if a stock ics (no leak) has come. It will be plastered everywhere. If your on custom rom then again just check the forum, go back to stock, update, and done.
