[Q] file copy to mass storage pukes - Captivate General

Hi guys, I'm on Serendipity 3.5 rom and for some reason I am unable to copy files from windows 7 to my captivate using the mass storage usb mode. My sdcard folder shows up as a mass storage device in windows, and seems to work just fine. However when I copy and paste files to it it will copy several files before just stopping. The progress bar just sits there and nothing ever finishes.
This happens for both my built-in storage and my external micro sd.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm pretty sure I've been able to copy files this way in the past, so I'm not sure what might be the deal now. I just reflashed to serendipity 3.5 rom, from 2.0, and that didn't resolve the problem. Both roms gave me the same issue.
Can anybody help me out?
Thanks in advance.

The same thing happened to me. Running perception 8, it would do the exact thing that you're describing. All I did was just copy about 10 items at a time and transfer them. Unless it was a big file, like music or pics, and those files or folders I would just transfer individually.

Did you find a solution? Or just try another rom? I just flashed to Phoenix 3.5, and I'm still having the same problem. Maybe it could be a bug with the newest component that both of those roms use?

Maybe an OS issue?
I've had the same problem on every ROM including the Stock image. Oddly; the phone works perfectly transferring the same files from my work XP box but freezes transferring the files to the vista / 7 machines at home.
I ended up just using astro & SMB to transfer files at home. If you have N wireless; it's almost as fast as USB. My windows 7 box eventually returns an error saying the destination (phone) is no longer available if I waited long enough.

I never had a problem with it before I flashed perception, which is based off of the canadian roms. I jumped from cognition 2.3b6 straight to perception 8, so it might just be a canadian thing, eh? I easily transfered files on stock, leaked JI6, all cog roms and those were all US based roms. Every rom has it's quirks, and some take longer to notice than others. So no I have not found any solution to this problem. Try switching back to any american version rom, just 2.2, not 2.2.1. I noticed some file problems when I tried cog3.0, paragon2.0, and a few other 2.2.1 roms.
BTW, I am running windows 7, 64 bit on my laptop, and android 2.2 perception 8 with setirons kernal.

Also, how old is your phone, or when did you get it/ how long have you been using it? What condition is your phone power/usb cord and micro usb port in?
I've had mine since the beginning of August, and just through normal wear and tear, charging, file transfers and just normal use of that nature, I've noticed that the connection with the phone and the charging cable isn't as snug as it used to be, and with it not being snug anymore, if I'm using my phone, whether it be texting or playing games or browsing the web, anything where the phone is being moved around basically, it doesn't keep a constant connection and keeps connecting and reconnecting during charging mode. And the same thing happens when I have it plugged into my laptop, if I mount it for usb mass storage, my external and internal SD cards both show up in My Computer and I can access them and everything seems peachy, but if I nudge my phone or move it on accident, it dismounts from the computer. I use different cords, one for the wall charger from a blackberry with micro usb, and I use the cord that came with the phone to connect it to the computer, and another blackberry cord for my car charger, so I know all the cords do work properly, and I even hooked them up to my blackberry to make sure it would charge and gave it a good wiggle test and it never read that it disconnected while charging.
So my theory, kind of, and it seems reasonable, is that while it's hooked up to the computer in mass storage mode for file transfers and whatnot, and there is a problem with the micro usb port on the phone which is only allowing, just for ****s and giggles, 98% connection instead of the full 100%, or there is dust/lint/hair in either the phones charging port or in the connector on the cord and its applying a certain level of extra and unwanted resistance on the mating surfaces of the charging port and the phone and the hardware and the mass storage mode itself were all calibrated to use that 100% to supply the proper amperage, voltage, and resistance to transfer data back and forth between the devices, but since it's not recognizing a full connection, it would result in mass storage mode operating incorrectly. So during a file transfer, you mount the SD's, find the files you want to move, copy and paste, the devices start relaying data to each other, but somewhere within that 2% of lost connection, some important info might not be getting relayed resulting in either an extended transfer time or or freezing of the transfer all together.
I've never had the patience to sit and wait to see if the progress bar would start moving again, so I just assume the transfer is frozen and start looking for an alternative transfer method. But if you've got time to kill or enough patience to sit and stare at your phone for awhile without touching it, next time it appears frozen, just wait it out. If after... I dunno how long really, until you feel it's a lost cause I guess.
Checking your connections is a good starting point. Unplug the cord from the charger and power down the phone and remove the battery. First, use a can of compressed air with a straw and stick it into the phone port and get any loose debris out of there. Same goes with the charging cord. Get some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip and wipe down the contact areas. I know it's an awkward and tight spot to get a q-tip into, but do the best you can, or improvise and use a flat head eye-glass repair kit screwdriver and put a little piece of paper towel, tissue, or toilet paper on the end of it and use that with the rubbing alcohol. Be gentile. Be careful. Don't completely soak the q-tip so it's dripping off and flooding the port, just dip the tip and squeeze off the excess so it has just enough alcohol to clean the area while applying a little bit of pressure. If you still have the can of air, use that, or just use your lungs, to blow dry the areas you wiped down and make sure all the moisture is gone. When you think it's dried up, go ahead and fire it up and try it out.
Do this with the battery out as well. Better safe than sorry.....
Try to re-snug the contact area by using the small flat head screwdriver and just see if you can move or flex the outer metal housing inward, or towards the center of the micro port so it grabs and holds the charging cord when it's plugged in. I'm pretty sure that the outer section supplies the ground for the circuit and since this is more accessible than the middle connector without disassembling the phone, I figure its worth a try......
In case someone doesn't know the area I'm talking about, read this or take it to a professional. When you open the charging port cover, there's a metal ring in the shape of the charging cable, and inside that ring is the small connector that goes inside the charger cord when you plug it in. DO NOT TOUCH THAT! That's where all the magic happens as far as proper data transfers and proper charging voltage distribution. So we're just looking at this outer ring area now....and if you decide to dabble and tinker with the inner connector and screw it up, I'm not responsible in any way whatsoever.
Sorry for the long rant, been a long day and I had enough red bull in the last hour to put a midget into a coma.

So the problem turned out to be the usb ports on the front of my PC! When I plug into the usb ports on the back of my tower then everything works just fine.
Thanks for the ideas everyone.

I'm glass you found a solution. Similarly, my windows 7 machine was returning an error, device not found, driver errors, would not connect ect. I system restored and it immediately found my phone, so there is another solution for people having problems the usb hub won't fix. After restoring though, I soft bricked my phone twice while flashing ODIN. Half way through I got Bright yellow screen on my phone and the progress bar stopped on ODIN. A fresh install fixed that.

PC fried my Captivate!

Let me first say I'm writing this on my Captivate now, so it's not completely fried like you may think.
Earlier today I plugged in a flash drive to have it not work on my pc. I plugged it in a different pc and nothing so I assumed it just died after 4 years. I then plugged in my captivate so I could mount it real quick and get my homework on there to get to class. Now this time I got the errot message "usb not recognized." I installed drivers, restarted, and even reinstalled windows , and still the same problem.
I then tried on my bothers pc and it still said not recognized. At this point, I had my brother buy me a flash drive on his way home from work today. Took it out, plugged it in his pc, worked fine. Plugged it in mine, worked for 10 seconds, took it out and theus b connector was really warm. Reconnected to his pc to get the"not recognized" error again.
I took apart my old flash drive and it smells and had a burnt spot on a chip, my guess the usb controller.
Now anything plugged into my usb ports get fried and stop being recognized.
My phone still works but anytime I mount it via usb it can't recognize. No doubt the pc fried the usb controller chip in the phone.
would I be able too take this back to att? if they open it up they will most likely see a burnt chip on the board some where, equaling hardware failure, which they can't say that I caused. I also rooted my phone and deleted the att crapware. Any way to completely eeyore my phone to factory? Keep in mind I cant mount this phone any more so I'd have to download any files straight to the phone.
Thanks
I should also add that I had an external microsd card in my phone. After the while incident that I think fried my phone. The microsd no longer appears in my phone to mount, un mount, or see available space. But if I take the micro sd out and put it in a usb card reader it still works fine. It only can't be read if its in the phone, this leading me to believe something fried internally with regards to the usb controllers and what not

You could probably get away with a warranty replacement if you don't mind being dishonest.
#1) I doubt they would open it up and see the problem
#2) how can they prove that a hardware malfunction with the phone didn't cause it?
Im going in on friday to see what they can do. It wasn't like I was hacking it or modifying the hardware, just plugging it in got it fried. Even tho it was my pc that caused it, I guess they can't ever prove it was my pc or that the hardware didnt short out on its own.
So will odin restore me to stock and give my att apps back? Can I do it without access to a pc since I can never mount my phone any more?
you could probably post a bounty thread for a jf6 stiock rom in an update.zip.
then use myfiles to delete the updates & clockwork
JH7 I think is available as an update.zip in the development forum.

galaxy s 2 acting strangely, battery drain and randomly going into driving mode

I got my sgs2 about a month ago and its been like a dream, battery lasts for a long time phone runs ultra smoothly no glitches and nothing weird has been happening, but these last few days its just been really weird.
1) it started randomly going into driving mode, i dont even know how to activate it or what it does, but i think its draining my battery
2)When i was watching a tv show on my phone it thought that there was an hdmi cable connected and wouldnt let me hear anything through my headphones. i exited it several times but it still though there was a cable connected. Then i went straight home and quit it from the task manager and it worked with the headphines but that might have been a coincidence.
3)When i connect the charger it takes a while to realize that its charging and sometimes stops charging and says that the battery is too hot or too cold but when i feel the phone it feels completely normal.
4)When i connect the usb cable, other than taking a while to realize that its connected to a charger it doesnt realize that its a usb so i cant transfer files with my computer which i do often
5)I pressed home before and it took me to some sort of clock which i imagine is for a dock but i have no such thing
6) Even after using the phone for a while and using several apps the android os has used 59% of my battery, when usually its the display that uses about 30 or 40%
none of these things had happened before and now they randomly started all at once, i havent downloaded any shady apps so i doubt its malware
any ideas?
thanks
Are you using a stock firmware or custom?
Have you tried resetting back to factory default?

seems like majority of your problems are linked with the micro USB port, try resetting your phone and see if that helps. This is weird though.
It happened once to me on my sgs but that was because I inserted the charging pin without realising it was wet but it went back to normal a few days later and I changed my charger.
i was also starting to think it would be a micro usb problem,
would a factory reset fix it?
if so how would i back up my apps so that i have the same apps with the same progress on them, is it even possible?
or should i just wait and see if it goes back to normal?
I am also having this issue now. I've tried a factory reset with no effect. The phone is now largely unusable. Did you get a resolution? If so, how?
im having the same problem too .. wish it's just a software issue!!
the problem solved itself after a couple of days, i took out the battery and left the phone alone for about a day and after it worked fine again, not sure if it was the time or leaving it without battery but its working normally again
I'm having this exact problem - phone switches into driving mode, then says MTP is connected - then it switcheds to a strange lock-screen I have never sen before. It's really strange. I flashed a nandroid backup from a few months back and still the problem is there. I'd flash back to stock and send it in - but I can't connect to Odin via USB because of the problem. Is there anyway to convert a Stock rom to a CWM flashable file?
I'm desperate to get this sorted.
Experiencing the same. Has anyone a proven solution for this?
My phone, sorted itself out - should I say my wife sorted it out - by mistake. What I think she done was hold down the home button, and then pressed the power off button together and held them untill the phone switched off. When my phone came back on again - she had somehow removed the -Exclamation Triangle of the kernel counter and removed the problems from this post - that I'd been experiencing for abouyt 5 months prior.
Go figure - I now have a SGS2 that works beautifully again and has also had any kernel counter and Custom Rom flashing notifications removed altogether. I wish I knew why this worked, as I'm sure their are many who would like to remove the Triangle without a jig.
The other option that seeemd to work for other people was to clean the MicroUSB port of the device with a dry, clean toothbrush - though this did nothing for my problem. Good luck -I know how frustrating it is.
Help Please
Guys, I am Facing the EXACT same problem.
1.Driving mode on/off automatically
2.Showing a lockscreen which shouldn't have existed on this planet.
3.Hanging up unconditionally. Have to restart phone.
4.Sudden "mtp connections" and because of that "Media Scanner"
I own a Galaxy note just 1 month old! I was so angry that i wanted to sell this. But i couldn't adapt to any other smaller screens so, guess ill try fixing this.
1.It definitely is something related to usb port (Since i cannot charge my phone, i use an external charger)
2.Took my beloved to a samsung service centre, they said phone is waterlogged and showed me the motherboard, saying"IC MIGHT be damaged"
3.Cost for repair - $200
4.Cannot afford that. I am guessing they were bluffing cause i saw the shiniest motherboard ever
5.Please fix this, or ill be stuck with a Nokia 500 !!
6.I can, however afford changing the usb connector, anyone successful with that?
Edit: Did my homework and found out that its definitely a usb port problem. Solution:Clean the usb port. Ill try try it and get back to you ppl. Oh and about 20% of the world's population is facing the same problem.
Edit(2): SOLVED!!!
1. Turn Off phone
2. Remove battery.
3.Take a Brush with hard bristles(Toothbrush/Artist's Brush)
4.Take a pin.
5.Take your own sweet 15mins to perfectly clean the micro usb port using the brush. Nicely and Tidily, give all possible strokes to flawlessly remove any dirt in there.
4.Then take your pin(Be careful here) and gently insert it into the gap between that small metallic micro slab and the bottom part of the usb Connector and gently move it up, VERY GENTLY!!!
5.Clean the battery's charging plates using a cloth, i used my own T-Shirt.
6.Put battery in and REBOOT.
7.Clean the charging pin of the charger using the safety pin/Brush or both.
I have it on for 15mins and no problems. Removed and put the charger again and again, still no problem. After waiting for 1 week, i am able to charge it using its charger! Now lets see whether it lasts......:-/
Edit(3): So, my phone acted up again last night, with driving mode and car dock. I used the pin solution, No problem till now. its Peacefully charging. Bah! it really is annoying
Edit(4): Now, its been 24 hours since my last solution, and phone hasnt acted strange. I guess after another 12 hours ill rule out the permanent solution. Which i used.
same here
Well.. I'm having similar issue. Battery drain and random driving mode/voice search sometimes. It all started after last OTA update and rooting without changing a ROM to custom. I've clean out USB port and no result. Maybe it's time to scan system with AV or unroot device...

I had the same issues 2 weeks after i bought my galaxy s2. Took it to Samsung customer care and they replaced the micro usb port. Haven't had a single issue since.
PS: Try to dry out the port and the phone if it is a water logging issue. I used a hair drier to do that. Luckily the tab that indicates water damage hadn't changed colour.
Had same issue with my Samsung Galaxy Note - randomly going in and out of driving mode, used a dry, soft toothbrush to clean out the USB Charging port, so far so good.
Make sure to flick the bristles of the toothbrush back and forth with your thumb first as you might see a lot of dust fly off of it.
Don't use anything hard like a pin or needle as you might scratch the contacts.

It's just a software problem, the reasons might be:-
1) you might have opened and closed some huge apps randomly and very rudely..
2) You are low on space on the internal MMC Card
3) Your phone might be performing the restarting apps re scheduler
Solutions:-
1)Factory Data reset will not help as the cache section might be corrupt.. neither the android 3e will help...
2) a)Use odin and download the Latest firmware package from Sammobile's Website.
b) for tutorial on flashing, go http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2488942.
c) Do not touch the phone after processes and restart was observed...
d) Again get into download mode and re flash the same Firmware again...
e) Restart the phone holding the HOME key, (it won't do anything by itself)
f) it will surely fix your Phone
3) Message me if any problem persists...

[Q] [i9023] Water damage - USB won't connect to PC.

Hi there,
My Nexus S (i9023) phone recently fell into a water bucket and I immediately pulled it out.
Not much damage was done to it except of one thing: after I put it in a bag of rice like stated on the internet for overnight, and then plugged it in again to the charger, it seems like something was different.
When I plug the phone to the AC power - phone DOES charge, but nothing else happens.
It doesn't turn on screen and informs "charging", and doesn't have the "charge when phone is off" option anymore. Instead it would just turn the phone on.
Also, when connecting the phone to the computer nothing happens, it's just charging the phone! can't mount USB anymore
I took the phone to a lab which handles these cases. They replaced the USB port and cleaned all the corrosion. They said it's fixed now, and indeed the USB port is new.
But then after coming back home it's still the same.
I'm sick of being dependant on other people and would like to fix it myself.
Any clue which part of my phone was fried? Where can I get it?
Thanks!
-zeek
Are u rooted?
Try a different ROM. Maybe one ur ur backups.
If it still does connect then it has to be the ROM assuming ur computer has the proper drivers still.
Good luck
Vs Nexus S 4G
Thanks!
Thank you!!!
Problem solved after I loaded one of my backups.
Any explanation to that? even when the phone was turned off it couldn't charge it in off mode and now it can.
How come it's a software issue?
Thanks!
I can only guess that ur ROMs kernel had a "fast charge" option. If so this doesn't allow computer connection. How it got switched to that option... who knows .... maybe the sudden power surge.
If not that, then ... strange things happen when a phone get wet.. the sudden power surge could have changed the power output causing CPU adjustments... who knows.
I'm just happy it worked for u.
I'd recalibrate ur battery asap.
Good luck
Vs Nexus S 4G
Hi, the same thing happened to me, only it wasn't a bucket, it was a pool, and changing the ROM didn't work (I've flashed at least three different ROMs since then, kind of hard when the USB port doesn't work but eh, what can you do).
Also, it's on a Gio, not a Nexus S, but the principle should still be the same, yes?

[Q] USB & AC trouble

Hello, first off I wanna say thank you to all those that worked on roms for the infuse it's fun playing with different ones and peeks at ones not available for my phone.
I'm new to the scene even though I read a few threads relative to the infuse.. So, I'm almost new to android devices though I can pick up on things semi quickly, my problem is USB connections with my phone..
I use the Samsung Infuse 4g and currently on cyanogenmod 9 (ICS), I first noticed this problem 4 days ago, My AC Adapter (wall charger) won't charge my phone, If my phone is on even though it shows it's charging the battery life decreases. When my phone is off, the battery charges but very slowly, also my original USB (from phone to pc) cord broke of course lol. I got a new one today that connects phone to pc or phone to a detatchable wall charger (don't know the correct term for it) so know my phone charges both ways, wall and pc.
At first I was highly fustrated because I could only charge my phone in the car.. Anyway, I went into the settings and went to the battery section, this is where one of/possibly my main problem occurs.
Charging my phone with my original wall charger (the one that only charges when phone is off), it shows up in the battery option: Charging (USB) or something to that extent, WHILE charging my phone from my pc, it shows: Charging (AC).. So my phone won't connect to my PC directly (can't access memory cards and such).. Obviously this is backwards but again, I don't know if that was a mistake on my end or the rom..
You know on froyo when you connect to the pc via USB the options come up on the phone umm, I believe kies, media, then mass storage. I don't get those options either so I can't use heimdall or odin.. Also tried downloading older roms for a more extensive test, thus I can't because most of the links are either removed or go to the multiupload site and I can't access the downloads because of the petition going on..
So I'm mainly looking for some insight on the USB connectors and also a possible froyo, even a gingerbread rom link, I'm not really comfortable downloading a rom from a random site, even a torrent site since I'm not adept with android quite yet..
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, and sorry for the loooong post lol, but I like to explain in details.. I could also provide screenshots of how the phone picks up my USB connections from wall mount and from PC ( with the backwards connections).. Just thought about the screenshot part also lol..
Thanks again
Looks like you have the same problem i had with my old phone. Try going into download mode (remove battery, hold both volume i think then insert battery along with cable to pc, you may want to check elsewhere i nah be wrong on the steps lol i dont think so though). From there enter odin/heimdale. If it doesnt show try other ports, other computers just install kies on the other computers for the drivers. If it doesnt show then come back and tell me... i needed a whole new phone, my usb was fried but yours may not be.
Thanks for the response, and sorry for the late reply, had a lot of issues the past few days. Searched around some more and it's a obvious solution that sadly isn't out there as much. It's true about the "Data" and "Charging USBs.. Sadly they don't put in BIG letters on a package stating the difference, so yeah thanks again and hopefully this will help out someone else like me lol.

The strangest issue I have seen with a Samsung Phone. Help appreciated!

Hey all,
This is a bit of a tough one.
I do quite a bit of phone repairs and I have my own little setup for everything and etc.
I got a Samsung S6 (SM-G920P) from my local market and it had an FRP lock - which is nothing for the most part.
Not thinking correctly, I just went to my Samsung Firmware, opened an XSA ROM for 6.0.1 and connected the phone via USB and went to flash. Fail. OK why did it fail?
AH - Because I am not using the right firmware for this (Thus I was getting the custom binary blocked message).
So I downloaded a 5.1.1 ROM and 6.0.1 ROM for the G920P and began to start the process again.
Put the phone in download mode and connected it to the PC, but I got "USB Device not recognized".
I thought it was a one off problem and reconnected it and it was all good. Loaded the 6.0.1 ROM and started flashing.
Completed successfully, no problems at all.
So then trying to do the FRP bypass with an OTG USB - I found it wasn't detecting it.
Thought, well, why not go down to 5.1.1 and make my way back up.
Connected the USB Cable and nothing. Tried again. Nothing. Tried another 5 or 6 times and eventually it appeared in Odin.
Started the flashing process and half way through it, the phone disconnected and now I have the "Connect to Smart Switch" screen on the phone and now any PC with all sorts of different cables will not detect the phone at all.
However - there is still power going to the phone as it's able to charge via USB Cable with no problem at all.
Next step - I took the phone apart so I could get a look inside to see if there may have been water damage etc.
Perfectly clean inside the phone. All flex connectors are fine, no corrosion and the WDI has not been affected.
Took a lot at the USB port and it's fine. All 5 pins are present and no damage is done. Soldering *looks* OK on the PCB, but it looks secure and the phone gets power no problems, so I am at a point where I am looking at this thing going what happened?
The OTG USB I tried in a Galaxy S7 and a Nexus 5X and both came up no problems.
All my cables I have are of decent quality (I assume so :/) and work with every other device tested.
I reseated the Flex Cable inside the phone for the charging port PCB and that hasn't improved anything.
Tried different computers etc.
Tried it with Smart Switch - doesn't detect and reinstalling Device Drivers didn't work.
I don't want to take the LCD off because it's working perfectly and I don't want to break it (You all know how fragile these screens are) - because I would replace the whole charging port assembly PCB - but this is why I am here asking to see if anyone else has experienced such a weird issue and can maybe provide some sort of an explanation into what exactly might be causing the issue.
And I was going to say would heating the phone up cause any issues with soldering, but I used about 30-45 seconds of heat to the back and the back glass came off fine. My thought that I may have damaged the port with heat is probably unlikely.
I don't know guys, the phone is still on and I have put it in Download Mode as well as left it in the Smart Switch screen and tried over and over and it's just getting power and not data (COM port in Odin).
I can post some pictures of the Micro USB port, the PCB etc if need be.
If someone has a solution, I swear I will buy you a beer!
Thanks heaps!
