So everyone (particularly other Aussies) knows, rooting and uninstalling the buggy apps below from the Optus rom seems to have significantly improved my battery life, as well as caused the phone to stop slowing down significantly after a few days:
DirectoryAssist
GOTO_Altitude <- I think this one or the last one is the mobile tv app that kept crashing all the time, particularly on APN changes...a lot of the rest are just shortcuts...
Optus App Store
Optus Games
Optus Mobile TV
Optus Zoo
Optus Music
Revolver
TrueCountry
TV 1.0
To uninstall them you need to root with z4root. I then used the free version of Uninstaller for Root from the market to back up the APKs and remove them.
Highly recommend this for all Optus users...phone is working much, much better now.
Once I work out how to restore 2.2s default tethering (or discover it's impossible and find a good app store app) I will remove the buggy wifi app too...
Sent from my MotoA953 using XDA App
As an optional alternative to the above, I flashed the GB Retail SBF, removed all of the motobloat apps (social networking, weather, news, widgets, messaging, etc keeping the google versions), installed a new launcher (in my case ADW) and then removed the motoblur home 2.2.
Flashing the GB SBF also got rid of that stupid Optus boot animation
Any and all lag is completely gone, battery lasts more than 24 hours with moderate usage (browsing, calls, gtalk, email, etc).
Runs pretty damn nice, stable 1.25ghz @ 62VSEL using milestone overclock.
EDIT: added battery comment.
Shellite, did you get back the standard android 2.2 tethering by doing that?
Sent from my MotoA953 using XDA App
Unfortunately, no. It did not restore the standard 2.2 tethering.
To be honest, while it would be nice, I wouldn't really use tethering much anyway.
Can some one point me to the australian sbf? Love to get rid of this vodaphone [email protected]
Any detailed instructions on how to do it as well? Or will the Brazilian instructions in this forum do the trick? Yes i'm totally new to this but that been said I am very computer-literate so it's more cautiousness than not knowing what i'm actually doing...
Sent from my MotoA953 using XDA App
The only Australian SBF is the Optus one which I requested in another forum whom uploads them to and-developers..
I will PM you some information as you should request they upload your Vodafone SBF before you start flashing others to your phone
The GB Retail rom is the best if you want unbranded goodness. I will PM you the link to this also, but as I said, hold off flashing it.
Thanks! Much appreciated.
My M2 came with GB firmware and I flashed the Optus firmware just for a look, it was ok except for Yes Optus boot animation plus a horrible Optus wallpaper and the Optus apps of course.
I now have the French sbf as it is MILS2_U6_2.3.4
Optus is MILS2_U6_2.2.19
and UK is MILS2_U6_2.2.16

foreman31, I just flashed the GB sbf and seems clean (phone portal works as well over wifi). Have you noticed any differences between the FR vs GB?

not really, it has AZERTY keyboard is all, when you press Q it types A and vice versa.
Does the GB firmware have data and battery manager in settings?
@shellite: could you please elaborate on how you got rid of the motoblur apps and the motoblur homescreen? Also, is that permanent (does factory reset bring it back?)
@foreman: yes both data and battery manager options are shown in settings.
Sent from Motorola Milestone2.
You cant get rid of Motoblur until Angrdroid finished FissionROM since there are too many links between the BLUR Apps.. an alternative would be.. to use a Launcher such as LauncherPro and ADW.Launcher or the Android2.3 Launcher PORT to 2.2 .. those 3 are the best ive seen.. (GDE is kinda funny aswell but seems Cheap (looks crappy sometimes .)) but i recommend ADW &LauncherPro this will replace MotoBlurHomescreen and Appdrawer has some cool 3D Effects etc.. wich runs WAY better than Blur.. But its impossible to remove Blur yet, i tryed it believe me... its because blur has own system apps.. and also i couldnt find the StockAndroid ones.. so i couldnt replace them .. im not that skilled.. all i did yet is Porting DarkEdge theme to Milestone2 Deodexed but thats all =)

Can I ask how long it took for Optus to deliver your Milestone 2 after you put in the order?
I re-contracted online, but there is some "problem" with the Milestone 2's that is delaying them being sent out (they have stock mind you)...did you encounter this or a delay by any chance?
Cheers

Initially, after rooting the phone (using z4root) I used Titanium Backup to delete the motoblur applications I did not want... eg;
com.motorola.photowidget 2.2
ContactsUnconnected 2.2
Date and Time 2.2
ES Musica
Help Centre 2.2
HipHop Official 2.0whatever
Home screen tips 2.2
News 2.2
Quick Contacts 2.2
Revolver TV
Rock On Altitude
Social Messaging 2.2
Social Messaging Service 2.2
Social Networking 2.2
Social Sharing 2.2
Social Status 2.2
Toggle Widgets 2.2
TrueCountry
Weather 2.2
World Clock 1.0
... I'm sure you get the idea, since testing out Titanium Backup I decided to buy the full version, after flashing the UK SBF to my phone, I used it to 'freeze' the packages rather than delete them (leaving me the option to enable them at a whim if desired).
There are more that belong on the above list which I have frozen... eg; I installed ADW Launcher and then 'froze' Home 2.2
My battery easily lasts more than a days use now, with calls, games, google reader, etc.. its also overclocked to 1.25ghz @ 62VSEL stable, I am now happy with my phone (I actually nursed it along for 2 days last week!)
I could give you my full list via PM if this helps.
Thanks shellite!
Im kinda new to android so i still have to learn much about roots and roms, but your post helped a lot!

I ordered it on the first day they became available, before they'd even turned up on the personal website (the guys on the phone were happy to sell me one). I think that was a Tuesday...it was delivered on a Thursday. They'd essentially promised me it would arrive in 48 hours (I didn't believe them at the time) and it pretty much did. I was quite impressed with the turnaround...
I wasn't recontracting though...transferred from TPG...

Nice...wonder why/how they have developed some "problem" now :-(
Oh well, hopefully will get it soon :/
Just watch the box when you get it. It doesn't have an obvious front, and if you open it upside down the phone will fall out (onto the hard tile floor in my case). It was totally fine, but I wasp pretty ****ty about it at the time...
This may sound silly but seen as it's my first time doing this I need to make sure the process is correct.
Is this the correct way to load the GB SBF onto my M2: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914071
Obviously that thread talks about the Brazilian firmware, but I'm assuming the process is the same regardless of firmware region?
I have the Vodafone SBF now so I'm good to go...

Please list some of the applications you use now that the Froyo Leak for the Captivate is available.
Obviously theres the staples:
* Flash Player
* Gmail (Priority Inbox)
* Chrome to Phone
What do you use with your Froyo-enabled Captivate?
I don't know what apps are froyo only, but you list is there, and Google Search. But I've only had froyo for 10 hours, and slept 8 of them. I'm sure the replies will start rolling in once more people give it a try.

That's what I'm expecting, hopefully this list will help newcomers to Froyo.
I had it on my Nexus One, but just sold it and didn't touch it for the last month or two. Those were the only ones i could remember .
Apps2Sd.... Haven't really found anything else that's Froyo specific besides that, and the previous mentioned apps.
I noticed the Astro Pro and Juice defender pro and some other pro apps are not available for the 2.2..So I am stuck with ads which I don't care for being on a 200MB plan.
One of my map related bus schedule software does not work on froyo... FC everytime.
ive been searching for the past hour or so looking for apps that are froyo only or take advantage of froyo features like c2dm and all i've found is
Gmail 2.3
Voice Search/Actions
Flash 10.1
Chrome to Phone
Googles's Car home was just released to the market. It's 2.2 only iirc

Hello,
Can someone explain how to save original rom from Milestone XT720 ?
Thank you and sorry for my english.
It may be easier to download the ROM image directly from Motorola using these links

I didn't have this idea, thank you for the link.
I came to ask the same question, I have a S/W version that is not found on that site.
My S/W is: STR_U2_05.1F.2
My carrier is Wind Mobile in Canada
I just want to ensure that I can flash it back if I have any issues with Dexter's 2.2 rom.
Also does anyone know if the network name will stay the same without an original Wind configuration. ie. right now it says "WIND Home" or "WIND Away" to tell me if I am on their network or roaming.
I am also looking for the default stock Wind firmware

It's the SIM and the network that tell the phone what to call the network. I'm using Dexter's 2.2 ROM from the US Brightpoint sbf (I'm on WIND but when I tried to flash to the Korean sbf from my stock WIND ROM, it just constantly FC'd). As of now it's showing me "WIND Home".
I am also a Wind customer. I previously messed up the bootup files on my phone, so I had to flash it. I used the Cincinatti Bell ROM, i believe, from the site with all the SBFs (sorry, don't have it with me ) I can confirm the ROM works identically to the previous WIND rom, with some small differences. One notable one is that the system's voltage seems to be higher (usually between 3.9 and 4.0), when the stock ROM seemed to read a bit lower.
I am going to install Dexter's rom over the reading week, how has your experience been with it so far, Iced? Great to know that it will work on our phones. Did you have to re-add the APN after the flash?
Sorry, I used the Brightpoint ROM. Not the Cincinatti Bell one!

Nope, didn't have to deal with that at all. As far as my first day with this ROM, its been good and bad. I had the same Facebook contact sync issue happen to me (not super important, already have to numbers I need in the cloud, sync is just slightly handy for a few things), and that my text scrolling would not work at all in any textbox (very useful in my opinion). The biggest issue would have to be Google maps taking a nosedive. It has a "Login Failed" error just after you open the app and it becomes sluggish and unusable after that. Had to uninstall after it started to FC and slowed my whole phone down (Went from 28ishMs to around 10 or less Ms according to my taskmanager). Might re-flash my phone or redo Dexter's nandroid backup if this keeps up and start fresh and clean again, didn't have a lot of luck with my Titanium Backup. Beside all that, great being able to use voice search, native apps2SD and the other FroYo goodies
Was wondering if anyone has made a comprehensive list of bloatware that is safe to uninstall for the I727R yet? I've used a couple of roms, and they're great, just not as stable as the stock.
Would love to remove *all* the bloat from my device, just don't know which ones are 100% safe to trash yet....
Also, from what I've read, I can just change the kernel if I want to oc, right? What's a good kernel for that? Da_og?

Two that come to mind off the top of my head
Da_G oc kernal
or
faux123 oc kernal
I've had no problems with either one, but only have limited experience with them.
And those are pretty stable on the Rogers offering? Sorry for the 20 questions, but I'm a novice at best with Android... and this device in particular doesn't seem to have a lot of material that lends itself to inspire absolute confidence in someone of my level of understanding, lol

I have not tried these kernals with stock rogers gingerbread, but from what I have read around these forums it sounds fairly stable.
if it were me I would just try it; and see if you can get it nice and stable thats the fun of flashing around.

If you think it might be bload but you aren't sure just go into titanium backup and freeze it. It is the exact same but if you run into problems later just unfreeze it and its right back on your phone. If it turns out you really dont need it then just unistall it
I'm running the ATT bln mod kernel on ATT hardware but a rogers rom and I have no issues.

After flashing the TPC v3 rom, here are my list of frozen apps. I've also got a lot of third party apps to replace stock launcher/dialer/keyboard/etc.... so I've frozen the stock ver of those.
I'll repeat the advise stated earlier in the thread, use Titanium Backup to freeze the apps instead of removing them completely until you're sure you don't need those.

One suggestion: TwLauncher, I'm pretty sure if you were to do a factory reset phone would crash after the inital setup(language blah blah).
Second thing, I've frozen secphone.apk for some time with no ill effects(not sure what it does). Could be screenshot service?

Groovy, thanks xda, tom. I was holding off flahing any new roms... but with the card issues, as well as reading the rave reviews of TPC's rom, I'm going to give it a run tonight.
Also, I'll name my first partition after you~
Great
Great list - just rooted, purchased TB, and froze almost all of the above mentioned (except TwLauncher and related).
Seemed to free up a lot of available ram on my SGS2 LTE.
Next step would be trying out 'roms', which I have next to none knowledge of.
Or just wait for the official OTA update coming up in a month or two...
honestly rogers doesnt put as much bloatware on the phone as att does to their version. I removed more Samsung bloatware then rogers bloatware when I was running stock. I'm now running CocaColaClassic and it works flawlessly on my Rogers GS2LTE i727r plus when he updates his rom he includes a update zip. I've tried every single rom and thats the best, cyanogenmod 7 is the second best rom available. Though this is my opinion. Also I use LauncherPro instead of twlauncher (find it much more efficient and faster)
Whats better on Coke than TPCs? Just curious

Freezing apps with TB doesn't free up any memory:
here is a relevant excerpt from TB Technical Guidline
17. Does “freezing” apps free space from phone memory ?
No, it doesn’t. The “frozen” app remains on the phone with its data, it’s just that the app gets completely disabled until you “defrost” it.
Heya,Folks at XDA-Developers,
(((Sorry for any bad english as i'm an egyptian)))
Last Year, I bought a t-mobile pulse. It came to me rooted running CM7. Overclocked to 748 mhz. but there are some questions here.
1-Apps very slow
What can I do? I tested simple apps even the dialer very slow and I tested these apps:
1-Happy jump (free from play store, hell slow), 2- Doodle Jump (Fast, paid app) 3-Fruit Ninja (Slowish) 4-Dialer (slow)
2-WiFi
One day, I turned wifi on then Obtaining IP adress.. then Turning off wifi.. then it turns off. what is this? how it happened? how can i fix it? is that once and for all?
3-Tons and tons of contacts
Da next day, I opened the play shop. sync mark appeared then 1938 contacts appeared. they are duplicated 1000s of times 1000s of times.
How the hell this happened?????
4-Theme chooser thingy
Another day I downloaded a MDPI/HDPI/LDPI theme for my MDPI pulse. "Sorry, missing assets" error appears and i apply anyway then i see some missin icons.
5-Battery Low icon instead of usb debugging icon???
I put on ma USB cable then a red battery charging icon appears but my original battery icon is regular. I
If any member could help a newbie like me, I will appreciate this and give a thanks to him/her.

Sorry.
There aren't any fresh ROMs. My phone came with a stupid android version. a.k.a. Eclair 2.1.
It was very very laggy and full of bloatware that keeps taking credit from me,opens 3g always with no option of disabling it,lack of modability, lack of root, lack of usefulness and thats what stock means. Froyo was more stable but dialer app had issues.
and do NOT tell me buy a new phone. I do not have the amazing prices that you have. I do NOT find the cool budget phones here in egypt. I do NOOOT find the cool cheap phones. I was first put in a world of booring g-tide phones above me. Then I was "Blessed" with my pulse.
So no solution with me. I am just a "root-aholic" user.
Bye.
Hi,
Don't get me wrong, not stepping on anyone else's user experience, but, what is a good alternative to Jellybean after the manufacturer update?
I don't like Jellybean. Tired of checking the built-in stalking and tracking everywhere--playstore, maps, gmail, syncing, web & even the weather apps. I always keep GPS & location tracking turned off. Never sign in for Google services--contacts, calendar, search, youtube or whatever not needed.
Jellybean is a downgraded user experience for me. The notification menu is small, lacking the information and access it had before ICS. The keyboard too large in landscape which is fixable with 3rd party apps. Battery drain after update--lucky to get 8 hrs, before at least 13hrs on one charge with heavy usage. Peel remote not functioning as used to with or without app updates. On screen widgets with limited resizing not like before totally customizable. Loss of soft key screen screenshot option (deal breaker) I use it a lot. Bluetooth connectivity issues, virtually impossible after JB. Placement of the soft keys in a very ackward place, keep hitting the quick launch native apps. Amazon appstore app only usable in the older app format. If I update it I will not be able to access my paid for apps on their cloud server.
Did a factory reset to see if I get a reinstallment of ICS but Jellybean afterwards only, not the original ICS stock rom it shipped with. Can this be downgraded to the ICS bootloader & stock rom? Searched on the internet to find the stock rom for GT-3113TSYAR, answers or instructions on how to downgrade, rollback or reinstall the original rom. Didn't find anything. Open to custom roms but most are JB based, might as well keep what I have, unless, there are other options. Please feel free to post them. Don't mind doing the heavy lifting as long as it works & I don't end up hard bricked. i do like the transparency for the app drawer and homescreens, please keep that in mind when suggesting good alternatives.
Here's the stock ICS ROM:

If you want to know where I found it, it has a lot of different ROM links:

Thanks, did it and it was 100% successful. I just kept bumping into Jellybean. It was a very akward OS for me. I found out from reading on this site, I was not the only one. The main thing was the connectivity issues--bluetooth a total fail, YouTube app constantly buffering and the OS porportions were off. I love Android and have been using since Froyo, this is the first time I didn't like a version. There are tons of custom roms more thought-out with beautiful GUIs. Just fast scrolling from screen to screen means nothing to me. Looking for functionality. It was hard trying to find a non-Jellybean based custom rom.
