Is there any way to just install the Android market, and maybe the apps also,
without having to root the device???
Anyone know???
currently there is no way of installing the Gapps without having root. is there any reason you dont wanna root ??? it should be the first thing u do when u get the tab
not that I know of. You need root access to change the system files. Installing the performance pack on top of stock will get you the market with all gapps.
Get the performance pack from here

Yeah, you need root because you are altering /system. This is like making changes to Windows system without having admin rights.
There are "tricks" where you can add the files to /data and then add soft links from /system, but even with those you still need temporary root to add the soft links.

Hi,
Not 100% what you want, but with z4root, you have the option of doing a "temporary root". You can do the installation of market after getting temporary root, then, after you boot the Gtab, you won't have root anymore.

At least part of the performance pack is driver files, so I don't know if you can install those while running under Android (haven't tried).
Clockworkmod (CWM) is a completely different thing. It's not an "application", and it doesn't run "under" Android. Rather, it's a (I believe) replacement for the "stock recovery", i.e., it replaces the stock recovery code in the Gtab's recovery partition. That's why (I think) you enter CWM the same way that you'd do a stock recovery, i.e., power off, then power+Vol+.

For which one, performance pack or CWM?
With the caveat that I've only used CWM once, and haven't installed performance pack, I think that "the normal" way that you install both is via stock recovery, i.e., they come in a ZIP and you put it in /sdcard, create /recovery/command file, etc.
If that's not what you're asking, then maybe someone else can help clarify.
Sorry...

Sorry again, didn't quite answer your question. If it is using stock recovery, no root is involved, since you're not in Android, then you copy the ZIP file (renamed to "update.zip") over to your Gtab internal sdcard (/sdcard) via USB, create the /recovery/command file, then power + Vol-. The stock recovery (assuming you haven't installed CWM yet) will find the "script" in /recovery/command and that tells it what to do with the /sdcard/update.zip file.
There's lots of threads about that. Try doing a search of this forum..

The performance pack. Do I need any sort of root for that? Also does that install the google market
Also I don't understand, what are the differences between these two?? Can I or should I install both? Sorry for all the noob questions.

The first one is described in this thread, esp. the 1st post, which also has installation instructions, and a description of what's in that.
"It does install the gtabdev performance pack and gapps. "
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=885940
That would include Market.
I think that this is only for STOCK TNT (i.e., the original Viewsonic firmware). and, as its name implies, it "enhances" the stock TNT. It's a "patch" for the stock TNT, not a complete firmware.
I don't know what that 2nd one is.

You don't need root to install any of this. It will give you root when you install it.
You install one or the other not both. 3.1.4b has the g sensor fix for games but borks a mouse. The generic one doesn't have the g sensor fix and a mouse will work correctly.
Clcockwork recovery replaces the factory recovery and gives you options for system backups and is easier than the standard recovery.

Sorry if this has been asked before. But is possible to load just the Android Market onto a Gtab without installing a custom rom like TNT Lite? I need the gmail app and would like the real market. I don’t mind the stock classic home page and not sure I want to try a new rom just yet.

TNT is the Touch-N-Tap UI that the stock unit uses. You judt install ther TNT enhancement pack to the stock interface.
Sorry I am total new at Android. But what is the easiest way to install TNT enhancement pack?
TNT Enhancement Pack
The instructions are here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=885940
Thanks for all your help! I now have the Market and Gapps.
Dont get it
enhancement pack installed (I guess, it did it's thing) but I don't see any GoogleApps.
Tried the clockwork installed, but it just keeps installing every single time by pressing the power and volume + after powerup so I don't get that one. I tried removing the zip file for updates but it's still doing it.
I don't see how it would not keep trying to install vs. boot? There must be another step that is not identical to install or it would keep installing?
never boots into clockwork.
I did update the unit when I bought it with the new image update. Maybe that changes something that makes all these instructions?
Puzzled, a nob, sort of, but not really
Love the G-Tablet even if I don't seem to be able to make any of the changes listed in the forum.

Read the first post carefully. If you can't boot into clockwork using power/vol+ then clockwork is not installed. If you don't have the market then you didn't install the enhancement pack.
I did, I got the cardboard box and loading. It just does not do anything. When I reboot and hold down the + and power (after powering down) it goes back to the cardboard box. I get the right responses as stated in the post, it just keeps going back to installing again following the instructions to boot.
Instructions are slightly different in this post on reboot, hold the + volume first (everywhere else says both at the same time).
Used USB, downloaded files into PC, unzipped and placed files exactly as specified in the flash card. Very straightforward.
Using the internal version as I read some had problems with the external one. Maybe I have to put the internal one somewhere else then the root of the flash card?
I know it did not install correctly. Odd as everything else I have installed outside of this works great (well TouchDown Beta does not work ether)
That is the issue.
At least there are no suggestions of soldering irons yet
Probably better I just stay away from these mods as it's a time black hole and don't seem very stable. Looking for productivity, not sinkholes
tried the external one with the same results.

'After a recovery is invoked, the process will have removed your command file (whether it was successful or not), and you will have to replace it when you are ready to flash again. A trick you might like is to copy the command file to command.bak, and each time you want to flash, just copy the bak file to command so you don't have to upload it each time. It is safest just to recopy the update.zip and command files back into their respective places each time you plan on reattempting recovery, just to make sure both files have the appropriate content.'
But it keeps going straight into installing a new image (or backup? what backup?)!!! pushing + or - does nothing at all
Maybe I don't understand what the tool is supposed to do. I thought it would boot into a application that allows for managing backups and ROMS (select things), CMOS type of thing
This is hardly rocket science
Must be the new build.
but this is,
NOTE 2: There are TWO dashes at the start of the command file contents, the image doesn't show it well (--update_package=SDCARD:/update.zip) or (--update_package=SDCARD2:/update.zip)
The clockwatch command line is incorrectly pointed at SDCARD2 in the zip file. It has to be changed to work 'out of the box'
There should be a note at the very least. or maybe fixed?
Missing step?

1. Fully charge G tab and turn it on
2. Install Titanium Backup on G tab (is this done like I would install an app on an iphone, or do I download to my PC and move it to the g tab?)
3. Backup stuff (everything)? To where? My PC?

6. Use clockwork to delete data and cache
7. Install Vegan 5.1 as per instructions here.
8. Install Flah and Market capability as per instructions here.
9. Install ADW launcher (not sure what this is, but it looks good on youtube). How do I install it? Is it like an iphone app installation, or...?
10. Some of the posts I've read mention a need for a file browser. Do they mean on my PC, or on the G tab? How do you get one on the G tab? Through Market?
11. Calibrate touch screen as per instructions here.
12. Anything I've forgotten?
Thanks for your help and understanding for a complete novice.
This has all been posted before as you thought.
I would not worry about backing up when you first get it as there will be nothing really on it but the stock rom.
if you goal is to load a Rom like TNT or Vegan from day one.
Root
Clockwork Mod
load Rom
and away you go.
There are directions all over the place to the above.
Once you get the rom loaded and all setup then get titanium backup installed and do a backup. Save yourself hours and pay for the pro version, it will allow you to run batch backup/restores and not touch your tablet while it runs.
Hope that helps now go read and search while you await your Gtab and have FUN! that is what it is all about.
Chances are you wont even have to root first.

This is my first Android device but I'm good with PC's.
Anyway, I fired it up from new installed clockwork, did the partition 2048,0 as suggested and for me installed tnt-lite and all is good. It was probably stock for about 10 minutes of its life.
Thanks Stuggy. That's what I'll try (except with Vegan, I think).

For some reason I had to root first when I installed the update after the 3389 update. I think it was just me but it was just another step. Installed z4root, got root, and moved on
Thanks badfrog.
Just to give you an idea where I'm at.....I had no idea what 3389 is so I searched for it. Many pages came up, but they all assume a certain level of background knowledge that I don't have. Please tell me, is 3389 the ROM that comes with the G tab?
If so, why would you be updating that if you had a different ROM already installed (Vegan, TNTlite, etc)?
Other pages I've seen have said that installing Vegan or TnTlite IS rooting, whilst still other pages have said that installing clockwork mod is rooting? Is this correct?
I can't find out what rooting actually means because every page I find assumes the reader already knows what rooting is. I will keep searching for a site for android dummies (and stop wasting your time).
rooting a device is basically changing system permissions so that you have full access to read, write and manipulate all files on the device. In Linux if you are root you have total control over the system. I believe that I read somewhere that the GTab is already set so that you have total control. Other devices you would use an app like z4root and it would change the security settings so that you had root access.
hmmm....the plot thickens. Thanks Sm0k3d 0ut, I'm looking forward to confirmation of that to clear up my confusion!

Thanks copc. I also read somewhere that backing up can be done with Clockwork. Is that true? If so, does a novice like me really need titanium backup?
Also, one more question: in case I ever want to restore to the stock ROM that the G tab comes with, do I need to do anything special BEFORE I install Clockwork and the new ROM? Or can I just change back to original no matter what I do now?
(G tab arrives tomorrow. Can't wait!)

I still haven't received my Zpad yet, so can't talk from experience. But from what I have read it seems that titanium backup backs up the apps (and maybe data?) and clockwork makes a ROM image of you Tablet (or something similar to that). So I think they are different types of backups and you should probably do both.
But I could be horribly wrong.

You are spot on, Titanium Backup allows you to back up and restore individual apps and data (you can also use it to sideload apps you have already installed on another Android device). CW will make a backup of your entire system (internal SDCard) so you can restore if something goes awry.

1,4,5,7,8, and 11 in that order will get you in business. Titanium Backup should be installed after you get Vegan installed, as there is really nothing to back up in stock. Data and cache will be deleted as part of the partitioning process (that's how I've understood it), and a file browser is already installed with the Vegan image. #9 is just fluff, ADW is a great launcher, but is not necessary to get up and running. If I recall correctly, it will install like an app - you should be able to find it in the Market.
#12 - Though it is not necessary, Root Explorer is a real handy app to have if you are going to tear around with Android's inner workings. Less than $5 on the market, but I found it worth every penny so far.
You will find many different thoughts on the process laid out above, this is just worked for me when I was starting out. The most important thing is Clockwork. Do. That. First.

I did mine (CW .8 and TNTLite) from a 256MB card, and there was still plenty of room - a 128MB card should do you fine. In fact, if you are doing it from a PC (I can't confirm for Mac as I don't have one), you can install CW off of the card, use CW to partition the tablet storage, connect the tablet to your PC, and then use CW to mount the tablet as USB storage so you can copy over the ROM image to the tablet and install.
As far as CW, use the .8 version. I have heard of problems from others using newer versions, and it seems that .8 is what the devs recommend. You can find a link to it in here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245

Welcome to MOD-dom, it's awesome.
I tried to update my rooted TF using a repacked 8.4.4.11 update.zip file (the one with all the patch files in it), but it kept failing on checking of the existing APK hashes. Not sure why, but I got around it by doing a clean install of 8.4.4.5, manually applying the 8.4.4.11 patch, then taking all of the changed (between 8.4.4.5 and .11) files and packing them up in a zip file with an updater-script file.
You should be able to apply this to any US version TF (rooted or stock as long as you have CWR) and bring everything up-to-date without losing root or any of your other install modules, system APKs, etc.
Make sure you back up first, as this is something I quickly threw together and has not been properly vetted. If you find a problem, let me know and I'll try to get it fixed and updated ASAP.
You can also download this ZIP and just take out any APKs you are interested in (the google video apk seems to be popular for example).

Unless I misread this is just an update script and not a full ROM. So this would only work for people on 3.1 though right? You shouldn't flash this from 8.2.X.X for example?
Edit: Thanks this is a great idea, and I was just ready to try this when I saw Prime 1.6 out. Keep it up, I wonder if something like this would work when the 3.2 update comes out.

thank you worked for me
This does not have SU in it (or anyhtign else "custom"), but when applied to a ROM that already has SU/busybox/anyhting else in it, those files will be retained.
This is an "update" in the sense that it only contains files changed between 8.4.4.5 and 8.4.4.11, so you will need to be coming from 8.4.4.5 (or perhaps anyhtign 3.1, not sure). It is nto really an "update" though, as all of the patch files (blahblahblah.apk.p) and the patch script have been replaced with full 8.4.4.11 version of the files and the script has been udpated to simply copy these over into the appropriate folders on yoru TF.
I see this being most useful for people who have modified their 8.4.4.5 install such that in will no longer be patachable using a script that pataches the existing files.
I just used this to update from 8.4.4.5_US and it seems to have worked just fine! I kept my superuser app, and nothing was touched. My apps, widgets, and settings are all in the right places. I've now got 8.4.4.11! Thank you very much rtadams89!
Thank you for this!! I've been racking my brain trying to get to a rooted 8.4.4.11 with a good CWM recovery and this did it!
thanks.

Thanks! My transformer still has the "Transformer" boot animation I added - wasn't replaced when using this file to update.

That is the boot animation I use, and I may have accidentally included this in the zip. If you want the real 8.4.4.11 animation, you can download the "update" 8.4.4.11 zip file that has been posted on xda and inside you will find that boot animation.

Since I don't have a WW version myself, I don't have a need to do this and quite frankly because I don't have much free time, I don't want to say I'll do something and then not follow through. Further, I'm not sure I can install the WW versions on my US transformer. That said, I will see if I can whip one together. If you get impatient waiting, you can follow the same process I did and make one yourself:
Backup your current ROM/setup
Wipe your device (leaving CWR in place)
Install the stock 8.4.4.5 WW with the ZIP found on XDA
"Update" to 8.4.4.11 using the update zip found on XDA
Backup this new 8.4.4.11 ROM
Restore to your first backup
Take the backup of the 8.4.4.11 ROM you made last, and use your computer to "unyaffs" it
You will now have 8.4.4.11 versions of all the system files; Look at the updater-script file in the 8.4.4.11 update zip and remove any files you just "unyaffs"ed that aren't mentioned in there
Put all of the remaining files (in their folder structure) into a zip file
Copy the updater-script (and it's folder structure) from my download to your zip file
Verify that your final zip looks like the one I posted
You should then have a ZIP file that will bring all the files on your device up to 8.4.4.11 WW without touching any of your other files (like su).
My BT doesn't turn on either.
I went to this as a stepping stone while recovering from a failed root. Went to an older stock than this update. I notice a few slow downs here and there and BT not working, but that's about it.
What I would really love is an image of 8.4.4.11 stock/rooted. I like having it rooted for things like Titanium, but I still like having the stock image. I can't seem to get back to that now.
Link is down, Dropbox says too much traffic. Rapidshare/MUpload?
This is the Stock 8.6.5.13 US update repackaged with:
* Clockworkmod support (It does not include CWM, but doesn't reflash the recovery partition either)
* Rooted (includes SuperUser.apk & su 3.0.0)
* Busybox (1.19.2)
This update worked fine on my TF101. I built it using the same method Roach2010 used to make his previous CWM-repacks so it should be ok. I have only tested this on my own tf101. Let us know when it works for yours too!
This will not work unless you have:
1. clockworkmod
2. STOCK firmware (root is fine)
3. the US or WW firmware
4. firmware 8.6.5.9
If this update will not apply, take note of which assert stopped the process. You probably applied some sort of mod to your transformer.
There was an issue in the initial release. If you downloaded it, delete it and download the new one.

The Update checker will verify all of the same files that the update verifies. It will not stop on the first error. This way, you can see ALL the files which will cause errors and fix them all at once without the tedious reboot / try update / reboot / fix problem / reboot / try update loop.

Seems you didn't edit the update-script to remove that check. Either way let me know how it goes. I made myself an cwm zip that I used to update my TF this afternoon. I didn't bother to add in SU seeing as though the update is just a patch and the TF should already be rooted.
@daoist If your new update.zip doesn't work let me know I'll upload mines and you can post it.
Hi,
I am still pretty new to all of this, I have rooted my TF, right now I have a US ver 8.6.5.9 rooted with CWM and I am getting the notification to update firmware.
Is this the file I need to update my TF and keep root, it looks to me like it is but I am not 100% sure, also I am not sure how to apply the patch.
To apply this do I use CWM? The step[s I think I need to do is
1. copy the file top my SD card,
2. Boot to CWM
3. choose install zip
4. pick the zip downloaded from this thread
5. then watch and make sure works, then reboot
OH, I have the netflix patch (libnvomx) file copied over the original in my TF, should I put the original back before trying ng this?
Is this correct?
thanks for any help and the file!!

You referring to the check that goes through and looks for mods and missing apps? Is it possible someone could upload a version that doesnt run that check? I replaced SustemUI and basically deleted everything I didnt need (and didnt back up individual files, just made a full backup) so it would take me a while to track down all of the APKs.
If I recall someone posted the .9 update without the check for the existing apps.
EDIT: I actually found a backup for my stock apps and copied all of them back over and its still failing. AWS.odex, first one (and its installed).

Yep, that's correct.
One note is because of how the TF handles storage, you want this in your /Removable/microSD. If you put it in /sdcard it's not actually in your sdcard.
When you reboot into CWM make sure to choose to pick a file from your sdcard, rather than just applying update.zip (in case you didn't actually name it update.zip)

The problem with removing the check is that this update is doing patching, rather than replacing files.
If you're just replacing files, you can skip the checks and it will work fine.
If you're patching files, if you skip the check, the patching process will not work (best case scenario). will leave your system in a quasi-updated state (middle case), or destroy the target file (worst case).
Maybe someone who's still on 8.5.6.9 can post their AWS.odex file for you to copy onto your device?
The issue is I have it back on my device, I found it, and the update is still hanging on that.

Hi,
Thanks for the help! It worked like a charm, no problems at all.
I am wondering now, do I need to update my CWM recovery, or do I just leave it how it is?
thanks for the file and help!!!
Now I just have to figure out how to get rid of the notification...
Has anyone noticed the web browser performance? Is it still checkerboard on display? Where it displays the page in chunks... and is this android 3.2.1? or just firmware update?
Worked fine on mine, Thx.

Would it be possible to remove the check and the patch? I am looking at the updater script, what I would love is to just remove its check and attempt at patching the bloatware.
For Example, the Check:
assert(apply_patch_check("/system/app/Finsky.apk", "19a70336522820f20a9e1d9f065ae56a714aa7cf", "690dc80af4303cb2df1991de9d52c269211e1dcf"));
set_progress(0.116486);
assert(apply_patch_check("/system/app/Finsky.odex", "fda5fbff54fc6c35b9210afd4a3b76b6a8862d83", "59412510a7d0a789b1e732dbffdc9feb3245e964"));
set_progress(0.119390);
And the Update:
apply_patch("/system/app/Finsky.apk", "-",
19a70336522820f20a9e1d9f065ae56a714aa7cf, 1070527,
690dc80af4303cb2df1991de9d52c269211e1dcf, package_extract_file("patch/system/app/Finsky.apk.p"));
set_progress(0.135043);
apply_patch("/system/app/Finsky.odex", "-",
fda5fbff54fc6c35b9210afd4a3b76b6a8862d83, 655760,
59412510a7d0a789b1e732dbffdc9feb3245e964, package_extract_file("patch/system/app/Finsky.odex.p"));
set_progress(0.138224);
If I didnt want it to update finksy (bad example but just one I grabbed) could I just delete everything above from the script? In the case of something like Zinio I dont even want the update since I nixed the underlying app.
I actually tried something like that but it failed immediately, no error. Im wondering if I havent zipped it up right.
Yeah, if you search through the update script for the name of the file that's erroring out, there's 2 places. First the assert, then the patch. Get rid of both and you're fine.
I'd google what those files are before you remove them from the script, just to be safe.
Just for example, Finsky is part of Market
Im wondering if there is something I am doing wrong or if there is a trick to zipping it back up. I tried removing those lines (for AWS, not Finsky ) and the update failed without an error (just aborted).
Im wondering, should I be leaving that set progress, zipping using a particular method?
The biggest problem I had was making sure the files were saved with unix line-endings. If you edited it in notepad or something like that it may have defaulted to windows line-endings.
Hi can you add this to 1st post:
CWM package for ASUS FOTA Update 8.6.5.13 WW

If it gives you an error about some file check, edit update script and put a "#" before the line of that file.
As the title states, I need help with understanding the basic steps on rooting the ASUS TF300.
I am not a programmer, I do not know the lingo or terms, and searching on the site has yielded very confusing results.
Basic steps?
1. Unlock boot loader - Why? What does this do?
2. TWRP? I have no clue, but I see references all over the place
3. Custom Recovery - What does this do? Do I need it?
4. Kernel - What is this?
5. ROM - What is this?
6. Install Super SU or SuperUser (what's the difference?, what does this do?
7. Install a root check app (to check if rooted I presume)
8. Install some form of file explorer (I have Fx File Explorer) and backup/control app (I have Titanium backup)- both paid forms
9. De-bloat with caution!
Where does the OEM firmware/software fit in this scheme? Does it exist as a backup or is it over-written? Do I have a choice?
As you can guess I'm lost. Reading threads after searching for "root TF300" or even the guides or the very good index, I have more questions than answers. How does one know what to do if the acronyms used are cryptic? (example TWRP~ what does this even stand for?)
I believe that not all steps are required, but I also believe the order I do things is important, and I'm concerned about bricking my TF300 by doing something wrong. I also don't want to assume that this is the same for every device or phones. (what steps work for a phone may not be the best for a tablet)
All I want to do is root and remove bloat. After I get this, I may consider upgrading the OS (kernel? Rom?) to something better.
Any links would be greatly appreciated. Please just bear in mind I'm so noob to this I don't know a ROM from a Kernel yet. (When I search, all answers are overly complicated developer definitions.)
Thank you!
Here is a "simple Step by Step" with notes in red as to how my mind tries to grasp this:
1. Upgrade your tablet to the desired firmware: 4.1 or 4.2 I assume they mean any OTA upgrade~ my tablet is current with JB 4.2.1 and I do not believe ASUS will plan on upgrading this anytime soon)
2. Be sure the correct drivers for your tablet are installed!! Installed where? on my PC? How do I know what are the correct drivers? Where can I get them?
3. Download the updated rooting toolkit: Updated Motochopper rooting toolkit -OK, I can do this!
4. Download TWRP for your firmware version:
- 4.1: TWRP 2.5.0.0 for Jellyeban 4.1
- 4.2: TWRP 2.5.0.0 for Jellybean 4.2 -This makes sense to me, as I am jellybean 4.2.1
5. Rename the downloaded TWRP blob file to twrp.blob and copy it to the root of your sdcard -what is a blob file? Is there a size requirement for the SD card? Does the SD have to be blank?
5. Extract the rooting toolkit to a place you like. -I assume the above mentioned motochopper? Does this answer my question above about the SD card?
== Part 2 - Rooting ==
1. Open up the folder where you placed the rooting toolkit. - with what program? A simple file explorer I assume?
2. Open the run file and follow the instructions -I hope there aren't any cryptic/over my head choices to make!
After installation the tablet should reboot and you should be rooted. -Does this install all the SuperSu stuff or is this it? What about customer recovery? Can I go back? what are the limitations of doing it this way assuming it works....
And this is just PART of the process!
I'll answer in logical order:

5. ROM - What is this?

That's the Operating System that's running on your tablet, i.e. what is called Lollipop or KitKat, or even further what makes the difference between Android and iOS.
Your ROM may come with some preinstalled apps, but with some ROMs they are separate (i.e. the Google apps).

On your ASUS tablet you can, by default, only install ASUS supplied ROMs (i.e. updates).
In order to install a new ROM you need to unlock your device. You do that by unlocking the boot loader. Once you have unlocked the boot loader, you can install a custom recovery, such as TWRP (there are many custom recoveries, but for your device TWRP is recommended).
Once you have a custom recovery, installing a new ROM, or rooting your device, becomes a lot easier. No need to type in commands, but you can now use touch.
broderp said:
4. Kernel - What is this?

Your kernel is the most important part of your ROM. It's the software between apps and your actual hardware, the lowest level actually. The kernel determines if you can talk to certain pieces of hardware or not. If the kernel does not support certain hardware, that's it, you can't use it.
When your tablet boots up, the first thing it loads its the kernel, the kernel loads all other programs. Another responsibility of the kernel is to allow you to run multiple programs at once.

They allow you to execute programs with root privileges (i.e. no limit to privileges, can do anything), but also give you some protection so malicious programs cannot become root: you have to give explicit permissions for every app.

Firmware often is part of the hardware: it gets written to special memory, and "sticks", i.e. when you reboot it stays there. If you get a T300 you should let ASUS run all the updates as it installs new firmware. Some firmware gets written when your device boots, meaning the special program, the kernel, starts, and at some point writes updated firmware to hardware.
So firmware is software that makes hardware a bit more flexible: else everything is hard-wired, if there's a problem you can't fix it, but with software you sometimes can fix a hardware issue.
Hope this helps!
First, to unlock the bootloader, you need to go the asus site and register your tablet. Then you can download the unlock app from the asus site as well. Next, move the unlock app from where ever it downloaded on your pc to your tablet. You can put it on the tablet RAM or on an SD card, it doesn't matter. On your tablet, go into the settings menu. under security(I think it is there) and enable 'unknown sources' for app installation. I haven't had the stock ROM for so long, I can't recall where that option is. Run the unlock app. It may take a couple times to unlock the tablet. WARNING! this will void your warrenty! So if your tablet is relatively new, think hard about this. Once your tablet is unlocked, then you can worry about TWRP and ROMS
TWRP is a custom recovery. It is officially Team Win Recovery Project, hence TWRP. It is a program that will allow you to back up your tablet before you make changes(very important in case you screw something up) and a host of other things including flashing custom ROMs. If you go into the LP 5.1 for the TF300 thread in the development area, it will have all the links for stuff like the current TWRP, Gapps packages and the newest LP ROM. It is great for our tablets and really wakes it up. Oh yeah, the TWRP site will have instructions for flashing TWRP on your newly unlocked tablet as well.
All this seems very intimidating for noobs, I was one about 4 months ago. I now feel sort of not-noobish. To install TWRP you will need either Fastboot or ADB on your computer. Google Fastboot or ADB and you should find plenty of answers. There are also 'lite' versions of Fastboot out there too. If you are on Windows 8 or 8.1 you will need one of those. Windows doesn't like fastboot or ADB for some reason
