Problems Installing new ROMs on rooted Droid 2 - Droid 2 Global General

As you can see from the title of this thread, I am having problems installing ROMs on my rooted Droid 2. No matter which one I try to install (gummyjar, liberty, etc.), after I boot into recovery and follow the instructions for installing the ROMs, they don't; everything on my phone always looks the same as before. What might be the problem?
As a side note, Webroot, one of my mobile security apps, seems to quarantine the zip files a day or two after I download them. Might Webroot be the problem? Should I uninstall it and try installling these ROMs after doing that?

You might want to post in Droid 2 forums. This here is for droid 2 global. Different phone.

[Q] Droid 2 Global Roms

I'm new to rooting and just rooted my Droid 2 Global and have no idea what to do next. Where do I find roms? What are the best ones? And how can I get rid of some of this junk moto has on here?

I'm sorta new to this too. I rooted with Z4Root. I'd recommend going to the market and downloading Root Uninstaller. That helped me get rid of all the stupid crap verizon put on there, like Blockbuster, Kindle, CityID, etc.
Another thing you could do is look up "root" in the market. It will show you all the apps that require root access.
Becareful though, just like your home computer, uninstalling some software may have unintended consequences. Hope that helps.

Thanks a lot. Has anything you uninstalled caused you problems?
Not yet. But I only uninstalled the factory installed extra stuff. I noticed a slight pickup in speed and battery life (although it could just all be in my head... LOL). Let me know if you do anything else cool. Im still trying to build up enough balls to actually start flashing roms.

This is a bad idea, don't do it.
When you delete the bloatware that comes on the phone, you make your phone unable to receive OTA updates from Verizon. This includes any future updates to Android version 2.3 (Gingerbread). The updates run as a patch, they check for all of the system data to be present. This includes pre-installed apps like blockbuster, amazon, etc. If ALL of the system data isn't present, the patch can't run.
Instead, you should use Titanium Backup to freeze these programs. It does the same thing, but instead of removing the files, it changes their extension, so that they can't run. It has the same effect, but when you want an update, you just unfreeze your programs, update, and then refreeze them. It also lets you make backups of your apps and app data.
If you don't want to pay for TiBu, you can always manually change all the filenames from cityID.apk to cityID.bak, etc etc. This does the same thing, for free, but is more involved and less beginner friendly.
Do what ever you want......if you want to go back to stock to get offical ota updates just search for the sbf file and your all good. Just know what your doing before you do it. If you delete bloatware it will effect ota updates. But flash the sbf with rsd lite and you'll be fine
Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using XDA App
You could do that, yes. But freezing bloatware is more efficient. Flashing an SBF is more time intensive, and has a higher chance (not high, mind you, but highER) of not working correctly. Also, TiBU has the added benefit of being a backup utility that's easy to use and very functional and stable.
Ok.

Well I guess that shows how much of a dummy I am with this stuff. I ended up reinstalling the stuff I removed from the market and unrooting because I had to send the phone back. It had a really weird charging issue that was present when I bought it. Im on the new one now. (Rooted to try and fix the charging issue. It didnt work). I haven't rooted the new phone yet. Im reading through all the forums to try and gain a little better understanding of how to do this stuff without wrecking my phone or missing out on updates. Thanks for all the good info! I wont be screwing around with bloatware so soon this time.
Definitly do not go the uninstall route on the Blur stuff.
Freezing is better!
As for ROMs there is only one ROM that I know of and it is Fission.
Get the ROM manager here at XDA and flashing it is a snap. It even has the Stock Droid in the manager so you can easily go back to stock when needed.
The stock rom in the rom manger still has root, busybox and is deodexed. If sent back with these programs on it will void your warranty. So if you ever need to send back sbf 1st to be safe. The .sbf takes like 15 minutes. Maybe two minutes more then flashing a ROM. So I really don't get how flashing a .sbf is difficult. And it actually is the safest due to the locked bootlader and the drivers usually never fail if running Windows 32 bit.
so i'm assuming that all of the other "popular" ROM's (liberty, rubix, apex, etc.) that say they are for the DX and D2 wont work on the D2G? I've installed many ROM's on my D2G and all of them get stuck on airplane mode and wont unlock. I end up having to restore and revert back to stock...
Yep, pretty lame that all these devs havent taken numerous peoples' offers to test out d2g ports of the d2 roms. i mean i have no idea how to port it myself but theres people saying "if you try it, ill test it" and still no devs take anyone up on the offer.
So does ne one think that we are going to get ne roms ported over to us from the dx or the d2 cuz I was lookin forward to flashing liberty to my D2G so can some1 pm if they got ne idea or if they kno when we can expect a new rom

D2G Rooting
Hey Guys- I just rooted and installed Fission ROM on my D2G- WHEW!! My wife (the IT pro) and I rooted this past Sunday evening. We used Z4ROOT- this part was fairly easy. Then we spent the next 6 hours- with no luck whatsoever- trying to install a custom ROM. We finally found out that there aren't many out for the D2G just yet.
We finally found Fission ROM, but could not get it installed. You must have a bootstrap program to install the rom. I found this out by accident. Finally installed Fission on Tuesday night. Only used for a few hours, but so far so good.
BTW- there are several bloatware freezers on the market. I had read not to remove it, so I froze it. App Freezer for Root seems to be working fine.
Be careful, and good luck!

There are instructions with everything you need to know (including koush's bootstrap) provided by team defuse on their website. The entire process shouldn't take more than 30 minutes tops.
And you can delete anything you want now that there is the D2 global SBF for recovery. Just make sure you know how to use it before things go awry so you don't panic and flood the forums with questions that have already been answered.

How do you get the OTA Update? I mean, you have to be on Verizon to get it, right? What if you unlocked the phone and use it outside the US with a different sim card from some other carrier? Can you still get the update? Please help.
And, if somehow I can find this precious update, then if I change my rom to Fission, I won't get updates anymore, right? Then what is the point of getting new roms? I'll have to be checking for newer roms with newer updates from Verizon all the time? Is this the idea?
Thank you,

Yes, you can get the update, no matter you are not on Verizon network. But update will not be 'pushed' to you, you have to go to system/about phone/system updates. Phone will check for update and let you know if one is available. If you are already running 2.4.330, you will get prompt no update is available. If you are on 2.4.29 - you must get the prompt update is available and will be downloaded.
Update will work only if you are using stock firmware (for me it worked fine no matter I had rooted the phone, you must make sure there are no 'frozen' apps before update is applied, or it will fail to install). On Fission, it will not show/work. Many users, including myself, have reported update does not seem to be adding anything benneficial to users on GSM/UMTS networks. On some networks (in Canada and Australia so far) update causes the phone to become unreliable when it comes to keeping connection to the cellular network. Another user (in Germany) reports no problems using the updated firmware. I suspect this is related to frequencies - in Canada and Australia we use bands that overlap with US bands which as we all know have some software restrictions imposed by the phone. In Europe (Germany, Greece) you guys use 2100Mhz.
Again - update addresses some CDMA issues, I find absolutely no different with/without the update in terms of battery life or call quality. (I am on Rogers Canada - GSM/HSPA 850/1900.)

[APP]BootManager(multi-boot app)

Thank you for the great response everyone. We currently don't need any more testers. Nexus one should have official support soon.
Hi I'm a developer here on XDA for the Droid Incredible and the Droid Eris. My team has developed an app for multibooting android rom's from the sd. We are looking for Beta Testers for the Nexus one. The app is called BootManager and is in the market. It currently supports HTC Incredible, Moto D1, Htc Vision, Htc Thunderbolt, Htc Evo4g, Htc Desire. We want to expand the devices but need testers. It should work for all htc phones with root and s-off but we need some variables for your specific devices. If you are interested you can pm me with the following info:
Partition sizes for system, data, and cache. You can find these by typing busybox df -h in adb shell or a terminal.
Gmail address you use for the market: We need this to add you as a tester to our market account so that you pass the license verification without having to purchase the app.
If you are interested in testing this app just send me the info and I can put it into our app and send you a copy to test. The app allows you to install up to 4 rom's on sd plus the one on the phone and boot between them. More info is available at our website in my sig.
We would appreciate any help we can get on improving our app!!
I've been waiting for this app to arrive and man has it been long. Well done to you sir!!

Beta Tester
Awesome, PM'd
Dev was beyond helpful in assisting me in getting this running (issues on my end, not with the app). I had already purchased from market before finding this thread otherwise I'd go buy it again (Luckily the dev has a donate button).
Works perfectly and will save me hours of flashing back and forth.
I was the "grateful" beta tester for the 4G and I gotta say this app is the frigging stuff dreams are made of! It not only lets you flawlessly load roms, it is fairly easy and straightforward to use! For those who use sense roms remember it takes a little settling in after loading and then runs perfect! Aosp users will have it settle right in, and as always nandroid backup first and foremost to prevent any hiccups! Please help these guys out, they're a great bunch of devs ready and willing to help!

Just got the beta test app and so far it seems to work.
My main rom is CM7 but I load a MIUI rom to test.
some of the stuffs is expected going in.
-lag a bit but that's expected running rom from an sd card (perhaps with a faster card it will work better as I only have a class 4 right now).
-while I can boot into alternative ROM, when going back the Boot Manager app say I'm not license. I have emailed the dev as requested. Maybe I'm just not in the system yet.

Yes, during set up it will ask what EXT you want to use.
I need little help over this.I installed cm nightly build in first rom in ext2 partition though I don't have any but when I try to install sense rom (which requires ext 4) it doesn't install.I need to create partition first?
Any help over this

sorry to crash the party but would love to see some nexus S support too.
I would like to mention that you do NOT need an unlocked bootloader to run this, at least on the n1. All you need is to be rooted.
Sdcard roms also run fine on a class 4. Laggy occasionally, but definitely fine to use as a daily driver.
The only thing about the app that I dislike is the market license check. I found myself in a position where I was on a ROM that was borderline inoperable, in a place where I had no data connection. I ended up being stuck essentially without a phone for a couple hours until I got to a place with a data connection. Could I suggest something like a one time license check instead of a check every time the app is loaded? I do know you have had a lot of problems with piracy.

So, is it possible to install the stock N1 image from HTC in slot 1 and play with a stock nexus one for a little while and then boot back to the phonerom and not have to worry about re-rooting my N1? I am wondering if installing the stock rom in slot1 (and possibly getting an ota update) will loose my ability to boot back into the rooted phonerom. Or will it work at all in slot 1?

Nevermind. No. It is not possible.
Tried to install stock rom into slot2 and all it did was fill up the internal storage.
Did not install to sd card.

you can always flash back to your phone rom by flashing the zip through CWMR in bootmanager -> Phone ROM
it's just less convenient than telling it to through the bootmanager gui.

Unlocked Bootloader & Rooted Questions After KitKat

As the title states I'm unlocked & rooted, but have a few questions before I start making changes to the phone.
1. Is there any advantage to using CWM as opposed to the stock recovery? The reason I ask is that the recovery is what caused me hours of trouble upgrading to KitKat. It just would not verify that I had the correct one even after flashing stock back. Is there any real disadvantage to flashing CWM to backup & recover as needed but keeping the stock recovery in other words? Or is there a way to save & flash my stock recovery back later if needed (CWM says that it is irreversible)?
2. Does anyone know a good ad blocker & how to get it running right? I used to use ROM Tool Box & never upgraded it when Google pulled that feature but apparently they shut it down as I still have the option but it won't work.
3. Anyone have a good list of apps that can be frozen/disabled in KitKat?
4. What font do you like? Been using the original Droid font for years but kinda thinking it might be time to switch it up.
Thanks for any advice and opinions you can offer!
It is greatly appreciated!

1. Being able to make backups is the big advantage. Stock recovery is basically useless aside from OTA upgrades.
2. AdAway is what I use. It's open source and you can find it in the F-Droid repository at f-droid.org
3. I'm still on CM so I'll let someone else answer this.
4. I never bothered changing fonts either.

[Q] [HELP] Moto G slower after rooting

I've recently rooted my XT-1032 (telcel) and ever since the phone has been a lot slower than usual. I'm still new to motorola devices. I've rooted other devices before but I can't recall this ever happening. Does anyone have a fix for this? A nice explanation would be awesome. Thanks for everything

Root is just a change in file permissions, it doesn't "do" anything extra that would slow the system down I will recommend you to uninstall any task manager or task killer app ex. clean master or advance task killer, you can also try by denying the root permission to the previously give apps, or even if things not work try to disable superuser....

Just rooting your phone should not slow it down at all. If you've downloaded rooted apps, or flash custom ROMs, and kernels, then obviously those could be suspected culprits for slowing down your device.
Another possibility, maybe a file could have been randomly damaged somehow during the unlock/root process.
Maybe doing the process of flashing a new ROM could fix the issue, manually updating the newest version of Android for the phone, or restoring/converting back to stock firmware, and redo the hole process again of unlocking/rooting your Moto G.

[Q] Google search and chrome keep crashing

I own the boost mobile XT1031 model and finally decided to unlock the bootloader and root the device. Everything was going fine. But not Google search and chrome wont work. Search crashes and gives me an option to report it. Chrome and chrome beta fail to connect to the Internet even though other apps such as Facebook, REddit and other Google apps connect just fine. When i go to enable now cars it says that i need to check my Internet connection. The only other thing that has changed is the font is different for some reason. I did install a few xposed modules to change the look and feel, such as Gravitybox, Android L Theme, and tinted status bar. They seemed to have no effect on the device in a negative way. I also had greenify but i only had it hibernating apps i hardly used. If anyone knows what to do to fix this it would be very appreciated.
I would like to add that the issues are still persistent even after factory reseting the phone. I am running stock rom, Would it be possible to get rid of these problems by reflashing the original rom or flashing a custom rom? I am also using TWRP. I do have a backup of before the issues started but that is on my laptop which i won't be near until Wednesday. Thank you again in advance.
I would try flashing back to stock or your original recovery and try the different xposed modules one by one to see which (if any) are causing the issues. Have you tried installing a custom rom?

It should, but you may want to update your apps to current versions as well after the restore. I don't know how old your backup is, but updating may solve some your issues.
I would definitely resist the urge to try any lollipop roms on the xt1031, as their are numerous connectivity issues at this point for cdma. But there are some great KitKat Roms (CM11 is one of them) available. I'm currently using PA.

Thank you, I resisted the urge and now there is a soak test zip so ill be doing that soon.
I restored the backup, it was 2 days old, and everything is working fine now. Adaway for youtube was the cause of the crashing, as for the font change, i'm not sure.
