Please help me pick a good Wireless-N Routers to run on my new G Tablet.
Thanks
i just picked up the belkin n600play wireless router. connection to it was immediate and easy. around $60-70
Cisco RV 120W. I tried Dlink and Netgear and Cradlepoint. This is VPN and 802.11n. The switch is only 100Mb but great configuration. Its a business class router for $120 at tigerdirect.com. it also has remote secure access. I'm in a highrise and there are 20 access points that I can see but even in this environment it doesn't drop connections like the Dlink did.
I use Sonicwall at 6 business locations and this works with well with their VPN too but much cheaper.
A lot of the newer buffalo routers are coming with DD-WRT these days.
I've tried them all in the last 15 years. I like the Netgear WNDR-3700 with DD WRT for home if on a budget.

Netgear N300
I use the Netgear N300 router and it does very well for me. I have 5 devices connected and I have yet to get disconnected with any of them. The range of this router isn't Great but it works for what I need.

Actually DLink quality varies quite a bit eve between the "same" "models. e.g. I ended up with a DIR-615, however, over it's lifetime it had three completely(IIRC) different hardware(internal) versions and the one that I purchased was the best of the lot(got a good deal too as the third version was just starting to sell).
It's best to do some research(googling) for sites that do router reviews under various conditions, i.e. lots of competing raido traffics, throughput, connection latency, connection drops, misc. "features", etc. I know it's hard to find alot of info on the newest routers but some can be dug up, although if you find alot on routers that have been out a bit and are still available you might want to consider one of those... $120 IMNHO is overkill for a decent WiFi router w/switch unless it has a SLEW of extras like drive bays(so that it can act as a NAS), gigabit ethernet, etc. (Linksys had something like this, a few years back, but it was an early model and still needed some work, presumably they've improved upon it since then...)
Definitely check the DD-WRT compatibility page. I've purchased several Linksys WRT54GL's specifically for the high degress of compatibility with DD-WRT. However, this specific router is not Wireless-N.

This encore router works extremely well for its price. Just got one to replace a netgear router I had that would constantly drop signal. Gtab stays connected now and range has greatly increased. Can't beat it for 27 dollars as long as the cheap shell doesn't bother you.

I have my router setup in my den, less than a foot away from the outside window. If I goto my car in the driveway, 75ft (max) from the router itself, I don't even pick up a weak signal. Why is this? I feel like I'm running on 802.11b with the range I get. Speeds seem to be at G speeds but still, the distance seems really false. Anyone else experiencing this?
802.11b and 802.11g have the same effective range.

i have the same issue. i have a linksys router, but it might be crap. Ill swap and see what happens
@coolb, sorry, meant to type a, just had b still in my head from looking up the g1's specs.
I have a Belkin N1 Wireless Router, most definatly not a POS And I mean it can pick it up from other rooms, but it seems when i go out of my house it just says no to me.
Either way I'm still under 40m from it, I wouldn't expect any more than 15m, maybe 20m, and like i said its right next to a huge bay window that I'm in direct sight of.
Try changing your router's channel or something. Maybe too much interference.
i have a belkin b/g and get no or 1 bar of wifi signal in my house. my buddy has the same basic router, but the n model and my meter is full and the connection was fast. I am definitely getting an N router in a week or so. i havent had any problems with the last couple of belkin routers i have had, so it will prolly be them.
I have a belkin n1 vision router, and i get signal down the street, about 50 feet away.
i have 3 routers, a 2wire gateway, a crappy netgear and a linksys, and on all 3 sometimes i get great signal sometimes i get low signal, i think the wifiradio no the g1 reacts based on battery life, i could be wrong but its just random like that... prob something that will be fixed on future firmware updates.
It can be anything not just the G1 but what is around, between you and the router, which way the antenna's are pointing, what is near the router. Honestly... I had a microwave between the router and one desktop and it always had issues even when the microwave was off... I moved it and signal came back and no problems. So just because it is off it could still impact the router.
i cant get any wifi network even from 2 feet away.
I had the same problem with my linksys wrt54gs till I went to do some searches about firmware on it. I came across a free firmware site that replaces linksys original firmware and worked great after I installed it. It was fairly easy to install and a big community for help incase you come across some issues. the website is http://dd-wrt.com. I usually had to reset my router once a week cause of failure to connect issues, but since the change I yet have not to reset my router and the signal is stronger. Its been two months now since.

Go to a computer connected to you router preferable wired and connect to you router(by typing its ip address in browser) it might ask you for a username & pass, you can looked it up online ie google linksys admin password. Usually its admin and there's no password or admin admin etc. Then change some of the settings around until you get it to work . Mess around with the security and the frequency. That's what did it for me.
I have problems with the G1's WiFi as well, it refuses to stay connected for more than 10 seconds at a time to my uni wifi. It'll constantly disconnect and reconnect... I have to turn off the wifi to get any internet usage out of this thing. It works fine with my home router, and my laptop and old winmo phone connect fine to the school network. No idea what's wrong
The WiFi on the TF700 isn't horrible but it isn't excellent either. Has anyone found any tweaks or fixes to stabalize WiFi?

Eh? It's excellent.. I get the full amount of bars in a spot where every other device only gets 2 at most. It's never dropped for me. I download entire films over it, at the same speed as my pc and laptop...
Set your IP to static as opposed to DHCP. (long press the network --> modify --> advanced settings) This stabilizes the connection.
Set your router to channels that don't match the ones everyone else in the street uses. Use a tool like inSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/) to detect all the channels.
Wifi bugs are almost always router problems.
Been my experience that wireless routers are one of the most unreliable pieces of hardware in the realm of networking.

In this case, every other wireless device in my house has no problem getting 4 to 5 bars. I've never really had a problem with Netgear routers.

All wifi routers have short lives because of the high freq oscillators inside (more info than needed I know.)
Had the exact same a few times.
All including the Infinity were fine when accepting a Windows 7 update to my notebook then it's wifi connection freaked.
Reset the router and in one case had to assign a different pass-phrase and all returned to abynormal.
My parents and I are getting tired of our ISP (Comcast Sacramento) modem constantly hiccuping and having problems communicating to our routers. We like at different houses but seem to have the same problem.
My parents are needing me to relocate their modem and router to the center of the house for better/wider signal and I thought this would be a good time to look into what my options would be if I wanted to get away from the ISP router.
My question(s):
1.) Would getting rid of the Comcast modem in place of maybe a Belkin Modem (since we have Belkin Routers) create a stronger, more stable network?
2.)Would maintaining the Modem to Router setup we have now be best or are Modem/Router combo devices better (Which is actually what Comcast keeps trying to give us).
3.) I want to try and keep the device options to a $50-$60 range... is this doable? Does anyone have suggestions?
Regarding connection quality, it is highly unlikely that the modem is at fault. The channel your wifi signal is on might be "crowded". There is an Android app called Wifi Analyzer in the play store that can check what channels the signals around you are on.
Definately do NOT get the router/modem combo. It's important to keep routers updated, and I don't trust Comcast to do that. Also, I heard a certain cable company (pretty sure it was Comcast) actually uses the modem/router combo device they give you to offer hotspot services to their other customers, so other people could connect to the internet through your router.
If you want to save money, you can buy a good modem for around 50-60, instead of leasing it from them for 5 a month. The Motorola SB6141 works with TW, but you should check what comcast recommends. And Asus makes some good routers around that price range as well.
I deeply appreciate the response and information to consider.
I dont think I have enough devices connected to the router for it to be a channel issue. But im definitely going to take it into strong consideration.
Can anyone second dgauze' concerns about the Modem/Router combo?
Does anyone have any experience and evidence whether Netgear Modems and Routers are good/strong/stable/fast? So far ive stuck with belkin merely because when I first started having to work with routers i had issues with d-link and netgear network PCI cards and router... both compatability and user friendly issues. Belkin just seemed to be more straight forward. But I am a bit more comfortable with routers and modems now where, if itll improve things, id definitely be willing to branch out and retry Netgear modems and routers.
its other routers on same channel near by not your devices that will make a channel crowded or channel change trying to get to a less crowded one
Hey guys
After much thought, I will be grabbing the WiFi model of the shield tablet
I was going to grab the galaxy tabpro/s line but gamestream is something that won me over. I can play my games on my bed when I feel like it
Now as for streaming.. I tried steam in home streaming since I don't have a nvidia gpu right now, which I will be getting in a few months..
Steam was a bit laggy, it said slow network a couple of times since I have a pretty bad wifi setup
Right now my wifi setup is my landlords wifi since it's included in my rent as utilities.
I have a router as a repeater to repeat the free wifi upstairs and then ethernet from the router to my computer
It's a pretty bad setup.. does anyone have any suggestions to improve this?
The only thing would be to get my own internet and then ask my landlord to lower my rent
Thanks
I dont know much about repeaters, but as understand from your post it just transform the wifi to cable? If that is the case you only need to attach that cable to a router with 5ghz wifi since the streaming only will use the local netwok

If you buying this tablet just for the streaming, understand it isn't an exclusive feature. You can use the Limelight app on most devices. But the Shield is definitely far superior to the other last-gen tablets you listed. Tegra K1 is an amazing performer.
Do you have a good router? It could be worth upgrading your router. You could get a 4G LTE portable hotspot with unlimited data and use that perhaps (or tether your own connection if you have an unlimited data plan). You can perhaps use an ethernet cable with the Shield Tablet for better signal. Drop down to the lowest settings if you have to (720P @30FPS).
Thanks
The landlords router upstairs is only 2.4GHZ so yea..
Repeaters just repeat the signal so it's better signal but will always half the bandwidth so I'm not sure how to get a better setup..
I can't change any of the APs router settings as I have no access to it
Hello everyone,
Is anyone of you experience terrible Wi-Fi performance as well?
In our house we have one main router on the ground floor, one more in the 1st floor (no mesh) and an access point in the attic for smart home devices.
When I'm in the garden I can only see the access point and the ground floor router. When I'm connected to the ground floor router the signal is very bad and keeps on disconnecting even though the distance is maybe 15 meters with only one wall in between. I cannot even see the network from the first floor router.
With my OnePlus 9 Pro I was able to see and connect to it, even though the router is on the other side of the house.
Another thing to mention is, that with the OnePlus I could see 10+ networks from surrounding neighbour's and with the Samsung it's only 2.
Im quite happy with the device, but this is really bothering me. I'm not using some crazy case or sth, just the Samsung clear one.
Thanks for reading, any thoughts?
You didn't say if you was on 2G or 5G? Have tested both? What Routers are they? Hard to help without more details about your setup. I have a Netgear AC1750 Router and 2G is crap at around 50mbps on Speed Test and 5G is much better at 250mbps. But it's a single story house with just the sole Router at one end.

I have separate networks for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. 2.4 is better for range and my internet is only 50mbit so speed doesn't really matter to me. Main router is a fritzbox and the second router is from some cheap brand. The setup shouldn't really matter though because it is still working fine with my OnePlus.

That's still kinda vague. What router models are they? Also, if you're running multiple routers, you're going to have problems. In a non-mesh environment, the second router should be configured as either an access point, or as an extender.
You could also be having an interference problem. Either between your routers and AP or from external interference from any neighbors' networks.
In any case, you'd be better served by swapping out your current equipment and switch to a mesh system. I use Google's Nest Wifi with one router and three mesh access points. However, there are several other mesh systems that work well.

Thank you for your comment.
The main router is a AVM FRITZ!Box 7590 AX (Amazon) and the secondary is a cheap Tenda AC6 AC1200 (Amazon). Having multiple routers in a a non-mesh environment shouldn't really be a problem. The Tenda is connected via LAN interface, providing it's own network with its own SSID. It's only for a few devices very close by.
I know there can occur problems due to interferences, but I didn't think it was a problem because the Samsung is the only device having issues. I can try messing with the bands, but honestly I don't think it's going to change anything.

Your setup overly complicated. You are essentially running three SSIDs (One for the FRITZiBox, one for the Tenda, and one for the attic AP). Either reconfigure the Tenda as an access point, or pull it out completely. The problem seems to be the handoff between your primary and secondary router. Your primary router should be able to handle the 1st and 2nd floors easily.
Another question. How many smart home (IoT) devices are connected? The Tenda is capable of only 20 devices. Since the Tenda is upstairs, it's going to have better range than the downstairs router (there is a reason why people tend to place antennas higher up). The AP in the attic is not a router and if it is connected to the Tenda via LAN, the Tenda may be running short on capacity. Since it is higher up, your S22U is probably trying to connect to that device.
The way I see it, you have three options:
1. Install a mesh setup. You have one router, with two mesh points (one on the 2nd floor, one in the attic) running one SSID on both 5GHz and 2GHz bands.
2. Remove the Tenda and move your AP to the 2nd floor. The AP can easily handle the smart home devices, and provide WiFi to the second floor and attic. It will also reduce you down to two SSIDs.
3. Remove the Tenda, move the FRITZiBox to the second floor and connect it to your internet modem (or whatever device you get internet through) via LAN (you said the LAN is already run between 1st and 2nd floors). Connect the attic AP to the FRIZTiBox (via LAN). That should give you enough WiFi coverage and reducing to two SSIDs.
1 billion issues can cause wifi problem....
1) airport\military base near you
2) powerfull microwave
3) neighbor on the same channel
4) device power management
5) bad case (bad plastic - put in microwave...if it heats its BAD)
6) bad antenna inside of device (return it to factor)
8) in-wall powerline 240v
etc...

Running an Asus RT-AC68U router. I get good 5Ghz signal in every room, the basement, the garage and in the car behind the garage.
Not sure what the issue is but it could be your device.
I highly recommend upgrading to a Wifi6 environment if you have a S22 (but not necessarily Wifi6e). The S22's support 160MHz channels which allows for up to a 2.4Gig multi-stream connection with your phone. My phone will connect anywhere from 1.2-2.4gig in/outside my house depending upon where I'm at in relation to my router. My internet is only 500/500, however, I noticed wifi was much snappier with my S22u over my older Wifi6 phone which used 80MHz channels.
