Hi guys, I need some help here. I'm a noob to rooting Android phones and I'm reading as much as I can to learn as much as I can but I have hit a little hitch.
I recently got the new HTC Inspire 4G from ATT and I'm trying to use super one click. I installed the Android sdk and every possible add-on for the sdk.
The problem is every time I try to use super one click it hangs as soon as it tries to do psneuter and the same thing happens if I use rageagainstthecage at the same point.
I have no idea why this keeps happening as I think I'm doing everything correctly.
Please help me figure out how to did this issue so I can use this program and root my phone and allow installation of non market apps.

No offense but if you spent 2 seconds reading a little bit you would realize that there is no one click root for the inspire YET. However there is an alternative method to root that involves making a gold card. All of this info can be found in android development.
super one click doesn't support the inspire right now. to root and enable sideloading, start here.

from what I heard and read, There will never be an easy root for the Inspire. I followed the directions using ace hack kit with successful results. I'm Rooted and already flashed Leedroid ROM.
Go to the IRC channel if you have problems. But first thing is making a Goldcard. That's a must

Ok, so i had read and attempted that method also. I have attached a screen capture of what happens when i follow that guide................ nothing!
I open a prompt directly in the folder with adb in it and i run the command, obviously without the unnecessary path, and it starts the process and never returns the magic number that i need.
Any ideas what to do next?

First time in the command window type "adb devices" and wait for it to return line describing your device. Then you can proceed with the adb shell commands.
So i tried the "adb services and it just gave me a long list saying the same thing on every line and that it was offline. Then i ran the original command and i got a different error.
Again i attached a screen grab of what happened. Thanks for all this help guys.
I did exactly the same thing as the guy in that video did. Literally step by step. I just don't get that number when i try it.

i wouldn't say never in this forum, unless its to samsung

Well HTC is a little different. Some HTC users feel they are elitist who feel that if you have no idea about basic adb commands then you shouldn't be accessing root. This is just my opinion from back when I had a magic and dream. I'm not talking about anyone directly, but that vibe can be felt sometimes in the HTC forum.

Did you turn on USB Debugging in Settings > Applications > Development?
Install HTC sync. It will install the correct driver to get adb to work
If you are only wanting to enable non market app install, superoneclick will do the job perfectly.
1-Install HTC sync to get appropriate USB drivers installed.
2-Connect phone to PC with USB cable and set it to charge only when asked by the phone which choice you want to make.
3-Put phone in debugging mode.
4-Run superoneclick as administrator.
5-Run the root for universal.
6-When that finishes click on the button to enable non market apps and let it do its thing.
7-Once all of this is complete you can disconnect your USB cable.
8-Now shut your phone all the way off then restart.
You should now be able to click on any APK file in estrongs file explorer and install it with no problems. This does not root your phone but does enable the ability to install non market apps. Also, shutting the phone all the way down and restarting may not be necessary but that is the way that I did it and it worked flawlessly.
There still will not be a setting in app management to enable non market apps but they will install after following this procedure.
Now, go and have some fun with all those apps you have stashed but couldn't install beforehand.

I am getting my new Thunderbolt tonight. After some research, I have decided for some specific reasons I would like to root this phone. I have never rooted a phone before and would like some direction.
The first step as I understand it is to back up the original operating system. How is that done? After that what's next? What I need is the wifi hotspot feature unlocked. Is there a specific root to accomplish this? What's been proven the best so far?
If someone wants to email me personally on this, feel free. I need to do this, but can't afford to brick a brand new phone.
Thanks.
Rooting is just a way to gain complete control of your phone. There aren't different types and the best way to do it is in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996616.
Just follow those steps and you should be fine. You don't need to back up your entire operating system to root but you might want to back up your applications so you can easily reinstall them. After you follow the steps in that thread and are rooted just search for wireless tether in the market and it lets you tether for free.

I can second that. I literally just completed rooting my Thunderbolt that I received today. I followed the 10 step program from the thread (my wife thinks I need a 12 step program with my phone addiction ). It ran without a hitch just type (or cut and paste) exactly as written. I wanted to thank the OP in the development thread, but I need 10 posts so this is another one!
I believe what you've heard about backing up the original operating system is what you do right after you've rooted before you begin flashing custom roms and kernels which is the main reason you root in the first place. There is plenty of info but here's a little list.
1. Follow the rooting thread that You posted above me (Who's on first? What's on second?)
2. Install Rom Manager (RM).
3. Launch Rom manager and install clockwork recovery(first option on RM)
4. Second option on RM is boot into recovery.
5. Once in recovery go into Backup /Restor
6. Choose Backup - This is called a Nandroid Backup and is a snapshot of your phone in it's current state. It saves the backup onto the phone under /clockworkmod/backup place a copy of the backup on your computer for safe keeping and leave the copy on your phone in case of worries.
That should get you started.
Those are the steps I took to root.

Another option is the easyroot method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005292
I just rooted my thunderbolt last night using the easyroot method and didn't run into any major issues. Had to rerun a couple steps, but nothing more than that.
I'm now running BAMF-Remix 1.5 with the radio upate and status bar clock removed.
I literally had zero experience in regards to this and am still confused by some of the terminology, so if I can do it, I have no doubt you should be able to accomplish rooting your phone!
Good luck!
I would suggest using the procedure that jcase posted. It is simple, easy, and you will gain some valuable knowledge of adb which could be useful to you in the future. The process is simple, just copy and paste the commands. The adb knowledge will definitely help you down the road, even though it is minor. Also any problems can be traced to a step. With a one click process it is tough to determine where an issue went wrong.

Easier said than done coming from someone who has been around for a while. I couldn't even figure out how to get adb installed... I installed the Android SDK and had to install the Java SDK but I was still clueless how to actually get adb going... I downloaded the ADB+Drivers for 64bit which had the adb.exe but obviously this can't be ran standalone. So being a complete ignorant fool, is the reason I ended up opting for the easyroot method. That being said, I did intially try for the manual method lol.
I knew nothing about rooting and followed the steps after not being able to do the quick root. AND learned a lot about adb. Good Luck
Your no fool. Alot of the adb setup videos and tutorials are old. It change the execute file from the "tools" directory to "platform-tools" directory. That did stump me since i had to reset up adb on a new computer. I have not been around that long, just did alot of reading, and came from the incredible forum where i turned into a flash junkie with alot of help.

after you are done rooting deffinately flash clockworkmod recovery and flash a custom rom. I trouble getting root to stay without a custom rom.
In rom manager it gives me an option to flash cwm. What does it do when I flash clockwork recovery?

If you're having problems with getting started, you can check out this link:

Breaks it down and walks you through setting up ADB. Had I found this prior to doing the easyroot method, I'd have gone through the manual way as well.
Just got ADB installed and gonna start tinkering around with the manual way of things.
Good luck.
I am just starting to learn about android and I was having a bit of difficulty following other peoples tutorials on how to root a phone. I have a samsung galaxy s 4g for tmobile with firmware 2.2.1 and am looking to root the phone. If there is another topic explaining this clearly feel free to link me to it and then close the topic. All I need is a tutorial on how to root my phone because I'm rather afraid I'm going to brick it on accident. Sorry if I broke any rules mods, I'm just getting started on android...
You can use superoneclick to root it. Very very easy.

UPDATE: I'm following the video at the end of the superoneclick topic.
You can also use Odin to flash a modded kernel that will give root and custom clockwork mod recovery.

Or give superoneclick another shot. It does take a bit sometimes and may seem frozen. I had to do it twice for it to work on gingerbread. Also make sure you have the current version. Do a google search for it and find the most up to date one.

How to put latest version of android on SGS4G
Sorry about the numerous posts, I have now successfully rooted my phone (I know its not impressive...). Now I have a few questions:
1. How do I put the latest stock android on my SGS4G? Or the latest "good" version of android on my SGS4G?
2. Since the phone is default on tmobile, I was wondering, will I still be able to do wifi calls? What I mean by that is, when I got the phone, it had a wifi calling app that turned off cell phone connections whenever I had wifi.
3. Will I be able to tether without tmobile charging me for tethering? I do have a data plan.
4. I know rooting is basically like gaining administrator access, but what are the biggest advantages of rooting? Just a personal question to you guys.
THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP GUYS. It really helps.
It might be better to keep this thread on topic. Your original question is one mentioned many times over in the forum, but since this is a newer thread maybe you can share with others looking to root how you successfully rooted your phone so they can learn from you. Pay it forward in a sense.

Sorry, I noobishly thought I was posting a new topic on my previous reply actually, and when I realized my mistake it was too late. And good suggestion btw.
So basically all I did was, install the drivers of my phone, which can be automatically done with the superoneclick software (in other words, the superoneclick software can install your phone driver itself)
in case your wondering where I got the superoneclick software from it was from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
And then click http://shortfuse.org/ and download it from there. On the top of the topic on the xda forum, it should tell you the latest version of superoneclick, and download that one for shortfuse. Once you've done all that, all I did was one, turn on USB debugging
1. Applications
2. Settings
3. Applications
4. Development
5. Check USB debugging
Then connect my phone (SGS4G) to my computer, and when the screen pops up on your phone asking you if you want to use it as a flash drive blah blah blah, just exit out of it, and click flash on your computer in superoneclick, from there everything should be self explanatory. Its not hard at all, but I suggest being careful since you can brick your phone (which is probably expensive).
Sorry if I did anything wrong, feel free to correct me.
if ur on 2.2.1 u can use z4 root one click 5 minutes ur done no computer needed its an apk file and u can temp or permanant root good luck
You are digging up old posts and anwering questions that have been answered??
Side Note - As of the last 8 months I have not seen the app mentioned above recommended as a method to root.
Hello,
I have heard about a phone being rooted or not rooted for sometime now and I decided to look into what it meant today. I've decided that I would like to root my LG Optimus V after reading quite a few articles regarding why I should root the phone. I am hoping to get rid of the unnecessary applications that can not be moved to the SD card; it stops me from downloading apps that I'd like to have.
I saw the guide to rooting this phone and I am good at following instructions and have more than average computer experience but I don't know anything about the android system or cell phone rooting.
Under the what you need, I am embarrassed to admit that I don't know what "ADB installed and working" is! I definitely want to learn more and attempt this but am unsure what to do next. Take it on? Some of what I have read about this is almost like another language. I appreciate any and all of your assistance.
cs.
I am on my phone, so it's hard to give you links, but in the Android developers, there is a guidde for setting up ADB. The most hardest part is wait the download time and slow instalation process to make it running. You need a 60 MB file, install it (the longest thing), and some files, Wich are less than 10 MB, extract it to the right folder and you're done.
Sent from my U20i using xda premium
Don't do something if you're not sure that it will succeed. Rooting caused me to soft brick my Samsung Galaxy S and I barely managed to save it. There's no guarantee that it will save you if it happens. Just warning you. If you root your device however, you do get a whole new experience of Android. Weigh this out, and try it.
Optimus V huh?
If its anything like the Optimus T, it can easily be rooted by just downloading z4root app and running it
Edit: if its running 2.2.1, z4root works. but if the firmware is 2.2.2 and beyond, then ADB is your method
Do your research. If you decide to do anything to your phone I repeat do your research. Google is your best friends, literally type your question when you have one and find the answer. Get a notepad read threads, watch youtube "how to's" using google put in quotes "HOW TO ROOT" "HOW TO _____" etc. Don't attempt anything till your sure and if something goes wrong don't make the mistake of thinking well I'll do this, this makes sence. You can easily brick your phone doing whAT you think "makes sence" last write the steps down on your note pad with links etc. Make instructions for yourself. If you do all this and you still aren't sure then you aren't ready
Im a noob just read around on the site a lot and take on the task when you feel comfty I've got a hang of it in about a week or so.

Easy guide to ADB setup with screenies
the best method i know of is to use super one click root a simple google search will find you the program easily. I have rooted several devices with no fails using this method
Rooted Devices:
-Zte Blade
-Vodafone 858
-samsung galaxy s2
-motorola droid x
-and more
The process only involves this
1) Switch on usb debugging rom the phones settings
2) connect the usb to the phone and pc
3) click the root button on the program wait for it to root
4) reboot the phone and you will have rooted the device
a good way to make sure that you have root access on your phone is to download root checker rom the market, this app will tell you if you have root access or not mate
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

Mike,
For some reason, I thought I was not 2.2.2 but the phone was upstairs when I checked this message so I wasn't sure. Of course, since it is more difficult to do, I DO HAVE 2.2.2. !
I hadn't seen the new posts yet as I've been moved to this forum (Sorry I didn't get that right!) and I see that killall has provided the link to ADB I was going to ask for. I see that there are other posts, too, and I will definitely read them now.
One other question! If I get stuck somewhere, which part of the forum do I need? Not that I expect to but it's best to be prepared!
Thanks, again!

Hello all and thanks again to all of you for your input.
Fanboy_Hunter - Thank you for all of the good, sensible advice. I have bookmarked so many pages at this point that it is all spinning in my head. I need to go through them and compare for consistency and try to understand the why's behind the how's! Also, thank you for what should have been obvious - using YouTube videos; I just use them for music and when someone sends me something funny; I've never thought of You Tube as a "How to" source. A big thank you for that.
Deromeh - It was certainly good to hear that someone else was in a similar situation and was able to catch on within a week. It gives me some hope . . .
killall - Thank you for the link to ADB; I haven't followed it yet but I had already typed my previous post and just before I hit enter to submit it, I saw your link. Much appreciated.
Kannibalism - As I mentioned above, I have been to numerous websites and can't keep them straight - yet! I do remember my phone being on a list of phones that I can use Super One Click with but underneath the list, it was suggested I try another way first. I kept looking for my phone's directions on that website but couldn't find them. Time to re-research. Any idea why they'd say it's on the list for Super One Click and then to try something else first? I'll try to find the quote on that one.
I did try to find out if my phone is rooted or not by using a program downloaded to my phone from the Android Market called Connectbot. The directions from the website were to follow the directions with the download carefully and I would end up with either a * or a #; one meaning rooted and the other not rooted. (I could be wrong about the * and # - it could have been different symbols.) There were no instructions with the download and the screen that comes up is nothing I am even slightly familiar with; it asks me to "Use the quick-connect box to connect to a host." Totally unfamiliar with that.
Can you suggest a simple program to see if my phone is rooted or not?
Sorry for the length of the post; please know I appreciate the feedback!

Simple program to check root is this mate: click here
As for super one click saying that the phone should be rooted in another way i have no idea why maybe because a dev has fixed an app to root the phone
for example when rooting my zte blade the method that i was supposed to use was using a modified app i skipped the app and used super one click to root. I did this because i have more confidence using super one click than a modified app.
When rooting a phone there will be no extra benefits when using another method since once the phone has been rooted they have all the same benefits
Hello,
I am new to the forums and android in general. Anyways, I am wondering if any one could advise me on the best steps to root and update my oldish android phone. It is currently on android 2.2.1 and has no support for 2.2.3 which is why I believe I need a custom rom.. I have looked thru numerous threads and sources but have yet to find a method i fully understand and trust, as i hear it.. you guys are very helpful and i am hoping that is true cause im about to pull my hair out at this point
Thanks in advance for any help, its appreciated very much.
Its great that you are showing interest in this. (Edited out, the device is stated in title xD).
Rooting shouldn't be as hard at installing a custom ROM. Older devices are rarely supported nowadays, unless it's really popular like the HTC Wildfire or something.
The best way to root your Optimus C is by using GingerBreak. Many users that have your device use that.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13086954
This method seems both easy and very sraight forward. Could any one please confirm? Id just like a lil insight before taking the plunge. lol
Note* I would link the posts stating this does work to gain root access but i cant post outside links untill i have 10 posts on XDA.
Don't worry, the root method should work just fine.

Ok, got it rooted
The next step would be to download rom manager and make a custom recovery using clockworkmod?
Btw~ incase someone is confused in the future. The root procedure was a few simple steps.
Before doing these steps make sure usb debugging is active. Also temp disable your anti-virus as it will flag the apk as a virus, This is a false positive.
1. Download the file from the first post in the thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049944. (the easy way for me "since i don't have a usb cord" was to click the QR code link on the first post and scan it with one of the many free qr scanner apps from the play store.
2. Navigate to the download and install the APK.
3. Open Gingerbreak.
4. Click "root" and wait for your device to reboot. Thats all  "if the process takes more then ten minutes reboot your device and run it again"
5. You can go ahead and uinstall/delete the apk once you have sucessfully rooted.
The next step would be to download and install the devices custom recovery.
Don't just install any, again go to that site I had provided you with earlier that have the stock and custom .imgs with steps on how to install it.

Ok so.. I have a problem, I was about to setup a custom recovery when all of a sudden Super User decided to update and now im a little lost. I have still have root acess and all of my root only apps are working perfectly fine. but every time i use a root app or reboot my phone since the SU update i get a message saying my binary files need to be updated. I try to update them and it fails every time, I have looked though a few threads and the only fix i could find was to use busybox installer. But.. busybox will not install on my device. How do i go forward with this? I don't want to mess anything up.. specially since i just thought i had it all figured out. :crying:
Nevermind, I guess i found a decent work around, I uninstalled the update and forced it to not auto update. I don't know if this is a bad practice but it seems to have solved the issue.
I like LG' phones. I am using LG P500 and very like...:good::angel:
