Tethering - AES or TKIP? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
New to Android and the tethering capabilities to my laptop. Should I be using AES or TKIP - or does it matter?
I am connected now (AES), but it says Local Only - and when I open my Google mail from my laptop, it displays in red https: with a line through it.
I have the SSID setup with a password, but I don't feel that I am all that secure. Is there another setting that I should have setup, or is it safe as I have it now?
Thank you.

I'm tethered to my laptop via the NS right now...password protected with WPA2 PSK. That should be secure enough.
All of my Google https sites (except Reader) are showing green. Reader has the red line through it.
I'm using Chrome browser and if you double click on the lock that is red lined, you get a popup explaining that this means that not all the content on the site is encrypted.

Thank you! I am also using Chrome, and most of the sites I go to (that are secure) show as green. When I just logged into my Gmail, it's showing as green now too. I'd guess perhaps since Gmail displays ads at the top - maybe that particular ad was causing it to show it as red.
So I guess I won't worry about it then - just thought I should ask here, just in case. Again - thx!

Either or, cracking any WPA password can only be done with a dictionary attack,

[SOLVED]Windows Live problem - sign in, username/password error, 16 character limit

Hi Guys/Gals,
I've been having a problem on my Touch Pro but I think this is a more general issue.
Recently I have been completely unable to sign into Windows Live via my mobile. It used to work perfectly, with both messenger and Hotmail syncing working. I am not 100% sure but I think it may be related to the fact that I recently changed my Windows Live password.
Since changing my password I have used several different ROMs and hard-reset many many times so I do not think the issue is that the old password in cached somewhere random (indeed one would think that flashing a ROM or hard-resetting would have destroyed any trace of hte old password).
I am definitely entering both my username and password correctly but I am still unable to sign in at all.
If anyone has any suggestions that would be much appreciated.
SOLVED:
Ok, this one definitely falls into the "user error" category!!!!
So, when I changed my password using my laptop I just typed it into the appropriate text box and again in the "confirmation" box. Signed into messenger via my laptop and my hotmail account via a browser and it just worked. Cool.
Tried exactly the same thing on my mobile and no go. Weird.
So I tried all your suggestions above (barring using POP and Palringo) and still no go. Starting to get annoyed now.
Today I changed my password to something simple and short, to make 100% sure that I am not typing it in incorrectly etc. Try via my laptop & browser, all is sweet. Try from my mobile and it works! Ok getting somewhere now!!
Change my password BACK to what it wanted it to be and once again it broke via the mobile!! Ok this is starting to do my nut now. Anyway, to cut a long story short, when you change your password it tells you that the minimum length is 6 characters but no mention of a maximum, the text box just stops taking characters without letting you know. Same with the confirmation box. MSN Messenger and the Hotmail sign-in page (I assume all Live ID sign-in pages) only take a maximum of 16 characters, so even though I was typing in 19, only the first 16 ever got taken. This being the case all computer/browser based things worked just fine. The Windows Live Mobile client actually takes as many characters as you type in!! So a full 19 character password would never authenticate properly!!
Shortened my password and now it's working!!
So that leaves 3 questions IMO:
1. Why, in this day and age of having to protect our IDs from theft etc, do MS impose a 16 character limit?
2. If they are going to impose this limit, why not tell you somewhere on the page where you can change your password or even automatically warn you when you're typing it in and reach the 16 char limit?
3. If all Live ID based apps and websites only take 16 characters, why is the WLM client different?!
EDIT:
I've updated the title and subtitle of this post so that if anyone has trouble in the future becauseo of this issue they will hopefully be able to find this topic nice and fast.

[App] 2 Factor Authentication for Windows alpha UPDATE: Now Vista/Win7 ready

2 Factor Authentication for Windows alpha
Hey folks,
this is my alpha preview of my 2Factor Authentication App for Android/Windows.
Disclaimer: By installing this app you will possibly harm your Windowssystem.Expect many bugs in the Phone app, but especially in the Windows app. Use it at your own risk. By downloading the app you agree to this.
This app could make Windows unusable*
*Well, better use Linux or Mac anyway.
What does this app do?
It adds a second screen after you entered your password, asking for a pin. This pin can be generated by your mobile phone and only used once.
The screen will open everytime you login, even after Standby/Hibernate/LockScreen.
Who should use it?
Paranoid people like me, especially these that own a laptop. If someone gets your windowspassword via keylogger or phishing, he still can't login.
In addition you could use the Windows auto-login (loads up all your autostarts) and would be still required to enter a code.
Who shouldn't use it?
People who are working with restricted rights (no Admin/root rights!), as these won't get past the login screen ;-) (might be fixed in final).
People who have multiple accounts on their computer, as every user is required to enter the same pin (will be fixed in final).
People who think this adds an extreme amount of security. Even though it does work in failsafe mode, there are some ways to get around it. If the "bad guy" has physical access to your computer, this is almost as (un-)safe as the Windowspassword.
Installation
Extract all files from the zip to a folder, e.g. C:\IdislikeWindows\. Then run installtion.exe, make sure you run the installer with administrator rights. You need an internet connection for that, so the progamm can generate a QR Code, that you then scan with your phone (apk attached below).
After entering your first generated key you're good to go.
Make sure that you never remove or rename that folder or any files in it!
Removal
Just double click on Uninstall.exe. If you used the graphical login before, select that option. Make sure you run the uninstaller with administrator rights.
What works doesn't work (yet)
- Impress with a fancy UI
- It won't work on Windows 9x (won't be supported)
- Users can still Alt+Tab / Win+R
- Users can still open Taskmanager (this is done for debugging)
- Synchronize if you have to phones
- Multiple Accounts
- Non-admin Accounts
- Phone App stores only one passphrase
... and much more I guess.
Tested on
- Windows XP
For safety reasons, the Windows part won't work after 2nd of July. But I will upload a new version until then
So go ahead, test this app and report many bugs I bet there are a lot. In addition I'm curious if it works on Win7 and Vista as well.
If something goes wrong, you can always start uninstall.exe with your taskmanager.
I'm looking forward for your feedback!
Thanks,
Marc
Update 22/06/2011:
- added Vista/Win7 Manifests
- Ping not done via RawSocket, so it is possible to install on Vista/Win7
- Remote Sessions should trigger 2FA as well.

Man, you are a genius, I was really looking for something like this.
One question: does it work over RDP? I have a computer a work (encased in a rack in a renderfarm) and I work by log in with Remote Desktop Connection.
Cool... Will be keeping eye on this one!

It probably won't work, but I will try it today. And I know there is a way to trigger it after someone started a remote session. I guess I will have it coded today or tomorrow
I uploaded a zip, replace the service.exe with the one in your folder and try it. As I posted above, it is not tested, so I don't know if its actually working ;-)
Feedback is always appreciated.

SSH Tunnel...is anyone using this app?

I'd love to use this app but feel like I'm in over my head trying to configure it. Can this be walked thru?
Firstly, do you have a hosted server (typically configured with sshd and nginx / squid), which is accessible from the Internet?

I DL'd the SSH Tunnel app (top 10 rooted app recommendation on a random site) and was hoping someone could help me with the necessary parameters to set it up. Is that possible? If promiseofcake's question is any indicator, I'll assume SSH isnt for me?

SSH is a protocol which allows one machine to securely connect to another remote machine, and in this situation, use the remote machine's internet connection. The benefit of this is that all of the data transferred to your phone appears to be originating from this remote machine of yours, and not all of the sites and services you are in turn using, Google, Facebook, torrent services, etc. Now if this server was hosted at home, your home internet would be the one which Google, Facebook, and torrent services would see using their services. Imagine that as a baseline.
In order for the above example to work, one will need a remote machine to use as a gateway for this traffic. Therefore, unless you have a computer setup and configured properly with a semblance of a "static" connection, there will be nothing for your phone to SSH tunnel into.
I would look into paid services so you don't have to deal with the hassle of setting something like this up.
Thank you very much for clearing that up!

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA App
Yeah, I use SSHTunnel everyday, the benefit besides the fact that everything is appearing to come from the remote machine you're running SSH on is that everything is encrypted, so the carrier or wifi lan you're using can't see what you're doing either other then sending encrypted traffic to your remote machine, this can protect against droidsheep attacks and if you're using your providers 3g/4G and you tether the traffic is masked as encrypted and your provider can't really tell what you're doing, SSHTunnel IS a good program if you have an SSH shell to tunnel the traffic through.
I have problems with this app too. It connects successfully to my server but the "Individual Proxy" option does not work. I sent a mail to the author asking if iptables needs any specific options enabled (such as --uid-owner) for this to work but did not get any replies. I don't know how different the iptables on android is compared to that on desktop distributions.
I'm using CM9 and tested this the default kernel and Siyah kernel.

[APP][2.1+] FTP Server Ultimate - FTP, SFTP, FTPS server with multi-user, no-root

Unlike other FTP Server apps we have released an FTP Server with almost all the features you can think of. Some features FTP Server Ultimate has and most other apps don't have:
- Add multiple users: and give every user their own root, allow write access and force stay in given root directory
- Run FTP server over SSL (FTPS Implicit) to have a secure connection
- Or run FTP server over SSH (SFTP) to be even more secure! With even support for Secure Copy (SCP) and public key authentication.
- Run multiple servers at the same time!
- Extensive logging!
- No root needed!
And more features:
- Start/Stop a FTP server automatically when connected/disconnected from a specified WIFI network, or on boot
- Optionally only allow specified IP addresses to access a FTP Server
- Add a Dynamic DNS Updater using the local or public IP of your device
- UTF-8 support
- Optional anonymous access
- The FTP Server can be accessed from the web (for example through your 3G connection) if supported by your mobile network
- No more need for an USB cable
- Share files with other devices
You can download it for free from Google Play (see the link below). I would appreciate it if you could leave a message stating what you think of the app, whether it works ok and whether you are missing anything. Quite some time has been put into it.

How come I can't run a server on a port below 1024?
That is a limitation of Android. However, you can try out our app Port Forwarder Ultimate which allows you to access the server on a port below 1024! So you can for example run it on port 21.
All feedback is welcome!
No feedback yet? I would really appreciate it if someone could try it out and let me know what you think of it. I really have put some time into it
Thanks
Did anyone try the app yet?
I tried it just now!
I dig it!
A suggestion if I may:
Add a little more dummy-proofing like tell them their connect string is "ftp://192.168.0.7:41839/" or whatever... and for both public and local URLs. Instead of just letting them know their current port number and IP addresses, etc. People familiar with FTP and FTPS will get it but n00bs will get lost.
In all I dig it tho! I'll use it!
Thanks man!

Vibrate on Connect (with my Galaxy Note SC-05D) isn't working.
And a status window with connected users (IP and/or login_name) and current operation (sending, receiving, CD folder name, etc) would be really nice - and in the basic version - it's kind of a safety thing IMO. Then press-holding on a user name should bring up an option panel menu: Kick, Kick-ban IP, Kick-Ban UserName, (and in the pay version: Send message).
Here's a little treat for ya... Opened into PhotoShop directly from my SC-05D phone:

Now all I need is a gopher server and I'll be in retro-la-la-land! (j/k of course)

I'm having problems (Can't connect) using this with my Samsung GT-7100 Galaxy Note II.
I think is not an App problem but from the device. Every time i try to connect I'm getting this message : "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server"
Using other FTP Server and same result.
Never had this issue with my other device Galaxy S III.
Any ideas how to solve this problem?
Thanks

Good to hear it works. About accessing from the web, you will need to use the public IP (visible under the info button on the start screen of the app). However, depending on your internet provider it might not work (some internet providers block it). If you use it through wifi you would need to enable port forwarding.

Yes, however, this app will be updated faster and is way less intensive to run on your device, since it's focused on FTP.

Hello I'm a bit of a noob at the whole FTP thing. I downloaded the app, set up the server, and enabled port forwarding on my router. How do I gain access to the server? When I type my public ip into the url bar it just goes to my router login. I'm confused...
Thanks for any help!
Edit: I tried switching to 3G. I got a different public IP but I still got a "could not connect" error in the browser.
Sidenote-When I slide up the log menu it shows the different servers underneath, like there's no background in the log menu.

Server SSID Behaviour
Hi and thanks for putting this out. I've added, run and connected to a SFTP server with no problems But here's my problem - I'd like the same server to run on multiple SSIDs (e.g. my home and work ones).
When I tick the "start server when connected to selected wifi network" box I can only enter a single SSID and have the server start automatically when a connection comes up. I took a long shot and tried entering my two SSIDs with common delimiters (comma, semi-colon, backslash etc.) but no dice - the server wouldn't start automatically when connecting to either SSID (which wasn't unexpected as it's worded in the app to indicate whatever is entered is meant to be a single SSID). In the log I could see the server stop when wifi went down, log when wifi was connected to any SSID and when a server started and stopped.
I then tried creating an exact copy of the first server but with a different SSID set. Upon trying to save the second new server the app warned about two servers using duplicate ports and wouldn't let me save it. Fair enough but, with the particular settings, neither server should be running at the same time i.e. they are both set to only run when connected to different SSIDs. Picky picky I know
I also tried leaving the SSID field blank. The thinking here was that, when left blank, it would try and start the server when any SSID was connected.
To summarise... the ability to start a server on: any wifi connection, multiple named SSIDs or a single SSID would be great.

ssh: connect to host serverip port 22: Connection refused

Ah, it sounds like you forget using the port number. For example, you have an FTP server running on port 2121 with internal IP 192.168.1.54 and enabled port forwarding on your router to forward outside port 2121 to inside IP 192.168.1.54 and port 2121. Now you can access the FTP server using your public IP, for example 123.123.123.123
However, you need to specify the port number when using the IP. If you use a browser, type: ftp://123.123.123.123:2121/ That should work.
Let me know!

Ok, so client and server are on the same wifi. The server is, for example, running on 192.168.1.54 and port 2121, now on the client (probably a computer) use the browser and type in ftp://192.168.1.54:2121/
Let me know whether it worked!

Good idea! Great to hear you tried all those options but unfortunately at this moment only one SSID can be specified. However, as soon as we thought of 2-3 more servers to add for the update we will also include the ability to select multiple SSID's

Good point, the SFTP server only supports SFTP commands and will work great with all SFTP clients, however, SSH commands are not all supported. You can try the linux sftp command.
However, we also released an SSH Server (on Play) which also supports SFTP and SCP. So if you try that app you can connect through SSH commands from the command line.
Let me know whether it worked.

[HOW-TO] Block updates on your usual router.

Hello!
I just tried checking what URLs Amazon access to download software updates by a Firewall, and, ecstatic that my router supports HTTPS request blocking, I experimented them, one by one, on one of my older 3rd Gen devices.
What you need :-
1. A still bootable Fire tablet,
2. A way to get into your router's settings,
3. Username and password of your router;
(This is usually found on your router's packaging, or sticked into its side, if you can't get it, try continuing because some old routers don't ask for passwords, and if it asks for passwords try contacting the provider for help.)
4. Default Gateway address or a PC connected to router to get it.
5. Common sense of course
First step-
(Skip this if you know your default gateway address.)
Open up a command prompt and type 'ipconfig' and enter, and look for Default Gateway Address, and copy what's in front of it.)
Second step-
Open a web browser and type http://y.o.u.r.g.a.t.e.w.a.y, of course replace with what you copied, but keeping http://.
Third step-
You should see a prompt asking you for password, if not skip this, it may ask you later. Just input your password and username to proceed.
Fourth step-
This is the step that requires common sense. You will have to determine where's the setting that allows you to block domains. For me, it was on Security=>Domain name filter. As some suggestions look for Parental Controls, Blacklist, Security, Firewall, domain name filter, Webpage blacklist, etc.
Fifth step-
You can block the two below to stop downloading amazon updates for good, I tested this on my HD 8 (2017),
amzdigital-a.akamaihd.net
amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net
(Note that the tablet will still determine if a software update is available, but it will fail to download it. If you want to stop checking for software updates, I think that the two below will do,
softwareupdates.amazon.com
updates.amazon.com)
Sixth step-
Remember to apply the settings of course, and then quit the router settings, and try visiting one of the sites above. If it stucks on loading then you are successful, if it shows something as Forbidden or Error then your router probably doesn't support HTTPS blocking.
YOU ARE DONE!
Note-
I tried this on my HD 8, with a freshly flashed stock ROM, and left it connected overnight, just I saw that 'Your device has not yet checked for updates.'
Please remember that if you connect this to an another network, updates will normally download. This is not device specific, just router specific.
I hope that you found this useful!
Thanks!
Just wanted to drop a note here that I blocked those domains using a Pi-Hole (locally hosted DNS-based blocker) but I was still updated yesterday to 5.6.1.0. Perhaps Amazon bypasses the connection's DNS and uses its own? I've now added the blocked domains to my router as well, so fingers crossed I suppose.

Strange. I blocked the URLs above in the router the day I made the thread, and my device is not checked for updates ever since. It may be an issue in your blocker, maybe Amazon bypasses the connection's DNS. Good Luck, since you blocked in router now? :good:
