[Q] Office Suite - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What would you guys recommend as a good office suite for nexus s. Mainly able to read MS office files but possibly ODT files as well.

The phone comes with ThinkFree Office.. it allows you to read office documents. Not sure about ODT, try it.

I've been using Documents To Go for years, first on Palm, then on iPhone, now on Android. I've never been disappointed. They have a free trial before you buy.
It's kind of expensive, so I typically try to wait until it goes on sale.
I just looked on my phone and it's currently on sale. I don't know what the price is since mine just says "installed", but you might look at it.

i was a loyal Documents To Go, until i tested the freedom + ease of use with ThinkFree Office it was free on the SGS
SNS only includes the reader, but not the full suit

If you need to review and edit docs, Docs to Go is the best IMO. I've tried them all and this is the best for me.

MoDaCo: make your HTC Shift have a FULL WM6; new mobile2day.de rebates

1. I have some very good news for you all tech geeks. You may have heard (for example, from me) that the latest, double-OS HTC model, the Shift, has a severely crippled and almost useless Windows Mobile OS. This was one of the reasons I haven’t really recommended it either
The excellent MoDaCo guys, authors of several other, similar "liberator packs", did not leave it at this and have published a tool that unlocks the full Windows Mobile operating system on the Shift. It can be found HERE. Now, the Shift seems to be a much better choice – much as I’d still go for, say, a Fujitsu Lifebook U-series U1010 UMPC if I didn’t need a dual operating system.
2. I really recommend the newly-started MoDaCo weekly podcasts – well worth listening to. The latest, eighth part is HERE.
3. Finally, last time I wrote about the current mobile2day.de rebates, I spoke about FlexMail 2007 Rev 2’s being offered at a much lower price there. MoDaCo Plus has turned out to be offering the title for free - among a LOT of other things.
(Note that this, as was the case with, say, my mobile2day.de, PocketGear, Handango etc. posts, this isn’t an ad for the site’s store. I always post quick announcements when I run into nice rebates worth telling other users, regardless of the reseller.
BTW, speaking of mobile2day.de, their most interesting rebates for this week are SBSH PocketBreeze 5.4, Spb Diary 2.5.7 and pocketMax phoneAlarm 1.65.1; all go for 10 euros instead of the original 18.50...20. Finally, a really tempting BlackBerry offer: IM+ for Skype 3.1.2 for 10 euros only – a 59% rebate.)

Red Laser like app for HD2

Hi,
Just wanted to ask if there was an app like red laser on the iphone for the hd2 or windows mobile, where you can scan barcodes from any product like a book and get the cheapest price from online results.
Thanks in advance
Have a look at Marketplace in the next weeks... we've build an app like that (Personal Shopping Assist)
Nice to hear, can you explain to me why all market place software is installed on the device and not have an option to install to Storage Card?

Try barcodezilla, does exactly what you want!
http://www.barcodezilla.net/Mobile.aspx
or http://www.woabi.de/ for germany (uses german shops, prices, ...)
or barcoo http://www.barcoo.de/ , but also only german i think..
I'm using QuickMark here. Works for 1D (but not all possible barcode standards) & 2D/QR. (free, registration required)
EDIT: My bad, QuickMark free doesn't work for 1D barcodes; wants an upgrade.

Barcodezilla doesnt seem to work very well on my device and is slightly outdated.
Ill give quickmark a try
Thanks everyone
Shopspark
We are releasing shopspark [redlaser like app] for windows mobile. Since this is still version 1 only, it will have limited features only. We do offer continous updates.
I hate how ALL these programs are being released at the same time, but currently the only one I know of that can do that is MobileTag Barcode Reader. Reads all sorts of barcodes and checks online + local to check for the cheapest price. You'll have your choice of programs soon enough. There's the program the user above me posted about and Shop Savvy is planning to release their version for Windows Mobile this May. For now, u can use MobileTag Barcode Reader. It works well with the HD2 and is officially supported.

Help...company is moving to iphones

Hey,
I work for a large multinational(10000+ employees) that is doing the unthinkable and standardizing on iphones for all smartphones...up to now as long as you had an exchange compatible phone, it was ok....
Personally I wanted to get a new WP7 phone as I'm coming from WM.
There are possibilities around it on a case by case basis but I need some help from you guys with reasoning why the iphone would not be ideal for business(outside sales group)...
I use my wm phone right now mostly for email but also a lot for opening and modifying excel sheets and sometimes word sheets, PDF's, navigation and some audio(I use my zune HD now for that)...I don't believe with the new ios that it has native MS office integration, correct?
Any tips would be ideal so that at least I can continue with a wp7...
look for another job?
There is nothing you can do... no company will accept such a new platform as a standard, besides Dell? lol I don't know... there is PDF support, uhm exchange is there, flash will be there soon... there are devices with QWERTY keyboards(Dell Venue Pro), that might prove much more productive than a soft keyboard. WP7 is a much better business phone than iOS, however convincing that to people who who think iPhone has the most apps as pretty hard. I tried convincing some people that Android was more productive than iPhone, of course they laughed . Just present WP7 as a business phone with luxuries... another thing would be WP7 has a far more superior calendar system. Reason I wouldn't even try is because WP7 doesn't have multi-tasking or copy-paste, something I believe business users might need more than XBL :|
you don't have to convince them to send all their phones out as windows phone... just to allow you to use a windows phone correct? if that's the case, what do they see in the iPhone? do they rely on a particular application?
for the WP7 case... if your work place uses sharepoint (i'd imagine so given the numbers you showed), well WP out of the box supports that, has better office integration and functionality than any other mobile OS, even with their third party applications. Also, WP7 has exchange 2003 sp2, 2007, 2010 full support.
That in itself should be enough to say that WP can work for your work place. But yea, if there is a particular app that they need, or they created themselves... unless you're a dev and can reproduce it for WP, you may be out of luck.
So far I am actually liking the iOS better than WP7 after playing with the HD7 for 2-3 days... grrr...
Microsoft is determined to win the phone wars, or at least become one of the top 2-3 players. 500 million spent on advertising alone is no joke. I honestly think they will be pouring out updates for their OS.
As a long time Exchange admin, I'm not surprised about this. There's plenty of reason to go to iPhone--decent Exchange support, lots of apps, etc--and although those things will all eventually be true for Windows Phone 7, today only the first item is true. Right now, Windows Phone 7 is an untested platform. Can't say I blame them, though frankly I feel iOS is a very "last gen" OS compared to WP7. Still...it's a mature platform, and for business use, that's valuable.

ouw there are many things which dont work with eas + ios
http://blogs.technet.com/b/jribeiro...-windows-mobile-android-nokia-apple-palm.aspx
Also the iPhone dont have Office, but open office which you have to pay for.
So no reading docs on the go edit them and sending back.
At the Uni i work someone had the bright idea of having iphones as corp devices. They went right over my head and now when ever a iPhone goes wrong on exchange they have to send someone out to fix it.
The iPhone doesnt support everything that a windows phone does on exchange.
Lets face it WP7 sucks to, ok it does the basics but you still dont get Task sync and you need to have exchange 2010 to use all the options.
this is also a similar issue to Android. Android provides read only functionality to office facilities, even with third party applications (from what i'm aware). given this is built right into the phone, there is no added cost to the end user.
This is a clear example of what MS was talking about when they said that Android isn't really free. Sure the core is free, but to get the products that can match the quality and functionality of Windows Phone, you are really look at greater costs than what MS asks for.
Thanks guys...
Yeah, it's just to convince them for me...no chance for the company wide...I'd like to convince them for the people working for me as well but this seems unlikely although those guys probably look at getting an iphone as a coup...the decision, like many decisions at big companies, has little to do with logic and all to do with politics.
Some good info here guys...appreciate it.
I agree, right now windows phone is not even at wm level but one can assume it will be very soon.
For the iphone, do you know if those office apps allow you to edit documents?
eh, WP7 is fully intergrated with microsoft office, plus windows live ID. iOS is not. im guessing your company uses PC`s and windows rather than macs? if you want easier transitons for docs and editing them WP7 is the way to go. after all WP7 it dosnt need "an app for that"
I suspect the reason your company is moving to iPhone is because the nutjob who signs the cheque on the corporate phone strategy is an iPhone fanboi and what he says goes.
Corporate phones without a keyboard = EPIC FAIL.

I could not have said it better....my local IT person was completely perplexed by this decision...
Agree with the keyboard thing as well...for a personal phone I've no problem without a keyboard but when you are writing upwards of a 100 emails a day...virtual keyboards suck...
I guess, the worst case is you buy a WP7 SIM free, use your work SIM and connect to EAS just like the iPhones..... Unless you are not allowed to by policy - or they have locked anything down...!?
I am using WP7 Mozart on Orange for last 2/3 weeks. I was previusly using HTC Legend. The WP7 EAS and Outlook is very good. I have two EAS accounts and a Hotmail account all sync very well.

The only thing I'm not sure about is that currently with my winmo phone and work we use a certificate that is put in the root(actually 2 certificates) and from what I've read right now this is not officially supported with windows phone 7 although there are work arounds...if iphones don't offer that then I guess I'd be fine anyway....
For me I'll see what I can do as I have a zune pass and definitely want the phone even for that alone but I was really hoping to use the benefits of the cloud solution of windows phone with my team (sharepoint, office,etc...)...

That depends on what phond u have though.

so then it's carrier based software? but yea, it would then come down to manufacturer/carrier to put the added cost in somewhere to offer the same level that windows phone offers, but yes of course it can be done, not saying that, just saying that the cost will pop up somewhere, whether that be direct or not is a different story.

Using Transformers in High School

Hello everyone. Im a student from a high school in Costa Rica. (Sorry if I make some mistake writing, english isnt my native language ) Me, some friends and a teacher made a group called "Artech", for promoting the use of art and technology. Im the tech part.
I have been using my transformer as a notebook all this year, and it has been really useful. I use it for all the assignatures. Everything with polaris office, math, chemistry and physics with supernote (really awesome).
School's principal has been very happy of how we use tabs/pcs as notebooks. So we decided to take the project to a higher level giving everyone a tab/pc for school use.
As people around here know A LOT of things i actually dont know, id like to ask some questions:
- TF101 w/ dock might be a good replacemt for books/notebooks? Is there some economic tab better than this?
- You now any other apps we can use for this? We are currently using: Splashtop for viewing everything from the virtual boards, supernote for math and all those things, box for shaing all the documents from teachers to students and viseversa and polaris.
Any help, comment, oppinion, etc, would be really apppreciated thanks!
having first hand experience with the transformer for the use-cases you're interested in, aren't you equally (if not more so) an expert on your own questions?
but from my point of view, definitely yes. note-taking, reading ebooks, etc, tablets definitely are perfectly suitable. for things like taking notes for math equations and stuff, maybe not so much. but i guess if the entire school is going digital, the teacher might just digitize the notes, and distribute an ebook or whatever. (although you miss out on the actual act of taking notes, which some consider help in memorization)
in terms of cost, there's a new tab coming out, the nexus tablet which is supposed to be on par hardware-wise with the prime, but around the price-range of kindle fire. so i'd say do research on that, and wait. it will be made by asus so it's possible that it will also have a keyboard dock, but i'm not sure.
kindle fire is also an alternative, but no keyboard dock.
no offense, just curious: but how is your school paying for these? are you in one of those private international schools?

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I am. But obviously, school isnt going to pay 400 TF without gaining something. It just like for persons that still doesnt have its onw pc/tab, or parents that dont allow their kids to take their laptops/tabs to school cause its too dangerous. How are we planing to get them??
Well, lets say that the TF is like 500$. Every month, we need to pay for staying there. So, when people do all the registration stuff for staying on school, there will be a contract, saying that you will be paying some extra bucks per month for having the tab. It will be like 40$ more per month.
Why parent will accept buying tabs instead of buying books/notebooks every year? Isnt more expensie? Well, No. If you count all the money you spend buying materials and notebooks in 2 year it will be more that having a tab, and the tab last longer.
Sorry f i did a mess writting all the info, im not really good at english, so..... And im not the best writter ever.... actually, this is my 1st post/comment, etc on xda. So...If you got any question/sugerence im here

off topic: i'm glad kids in your country are making an effort to learn and use tools like the TF. kids at my high school would just play angry birds all day lol
Being in university, I find the transformer useful. But not as good as it could be. The only issue I have with it is not having a pen. I have a few capacitive pens (adonit Jot, and a generic rubber tip), but they're not as good as something with a dedicated digitizer.
I'm always keeping an eye out for something with a digitizer, and the ones I've seen are the Xoom 2, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, HTC flyer (I wouldn't get this as the screen is too small)
This is coming from the perspective from studying engineering. There's always symbols, diagrams, and equations that are used all the time, thus my need for a pen. But for highschool, an android tablet should be sufficient. It's waaay easier to carry around one tablet than 3 textbooks.
That's my only issue.
As for reading and making notes on PDF's I use two apps, Repligo and EZPdf.
EZPdf is great for making notes, I would say it's better than Repligo in this aspect because you can pan while writing.
However, Repligo is better when opening large PDF's. I constantly open 300+ page pdfs in the form of text books, and I've never had issues with them.
I also use Andie Graph as a calculator if needed (that said, it's still not as good as my ti-92)
There's also a new physics app called ForceEffect by autodesk. I haven't had a chance to really play with it, but it seems useful for basic static physics problems if you're having trouble understanding.
Hope that helps
I suggest Adonit Jot with LectureNotes. There is a trial version of LecureNotes on PlayStore.

Thanks everyone for the reply! I havent cheked xda lately because of exams.....
Well, the pen may not be an issue because, as every teacher have its own computer in class, they just give us their doc and we take notes while she/he explains the theory and all that stuff. This is a lot faster and efficients that retyping everythign again. So all we need to do is write on the document section "notes". The pen will be only used for math and somethimes chemistry/physics. But everypen will work, even the finger, at least for me, isnt uncomfortable.
EZPdf might be a really good program, thanks for the recomendation. As we will buy virtual licenses instead of books, a good programs might be good, and the taking notes parts looks awesome.
ForceEffect looks really good but, looks kinda complicated so ill be playing with it for checking if it will work. Thanks very much for the reply, im very happy and for the other people to.
And again, sorry for my bad english.

Well, thats something you can see ALLWAYS. Thats why we are making teachers to monitorate all the computers on class. So, every person that is on fb, playing or making dirty stuff, will be punished
I think there is nothing like this but, is there any way every TF can, like connect to the internet, and get monitored?
Check Evernote - for me the best note taking and sharing app. It also has desktop version. You might instead like Springpad, they're quite similar, it's just the matter of taste and needs.

The Galaxy Note 10.1 that comes out in a week will include support for the Wacomb driven S Pen (a professional graphics level digitizer), and the operating system and software will be built entirely around the use of the stylus. If you do a Google or YouTube search for "Galaxy Note Premium Suite Review", you'll be able to see what kind of support and features are built in to the device and the possibilities of using such a device for school. While the galaxy note is a phone, they're releasing a tablet version. It will have all of the features the Galaxy Note has, plus more! And it will be built around a large form factor, with superior math, image editing, drawing, and handwriting support (which will be good for those who are not used to a combination of touching and typing. Being that its an android tablet, you can pair it with a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse, and use it just like a laptop.
So you could write on it during the day, and pair it with a keyboard to type the really long papers! And its much much faster than the transformer, and software like splash top still works!
Search in youtube for the "galaxy note 10.1" and "galaxy Note premium suite" so see a demo. You can also search for "s note Demo" to see the built in math software, and note taking application. It's extremely powerful, and the software even includes handwriting recognition.

RT2 Emulators for 2017?

Hey everyone! So apparently I don’t post a lot so I couldn’t post in the development section (guess they don’t like to provide help to noobs, oh well) so Im gonna ask here.
Are there ANY emulators for the Surface RT 2 running 8.1? Yes, I have the Test Mode thing installed as well as Win86Emu, however Im finding less of a use for this thing everyday. I got it for $70 bucks used and was going to use it for Photoshop and drawing, but apparently the Surface RT is the unwanted autistic offspring of the Surface family. Why didn’t I buy a new Surface? Not everyone is a millionare, and I have cancer so I can’t afford anything like over $80 bucks.
Im tired of not being able to use this how I want. Its almost 2018, why hasn’t the Surface been FULLY hacked yet? I want to be able to run apps like Photoshop, Nestopia, Mupen64, Chrome, etc. Microsoft’s a bunch of ******* for taking the emulators off of the Windows Store, too bad there’s no way to get them anymore.
Any ideas? Reallllly don’t want to let this tablet go to waste if I can find DECENT drawing/photo editing software as well as emulators that LET ME USE a controller. Thanks!
****ty I am in the same boat
