[REQUEST] Dialer app or Contacts app in memory

Hi,
Mods, feel free to move this to the Q&A if you think this is inappropriate. Thanks.
I would like to request whether a similar function like the "Home app in memory" for "Spare Parts" can be extended to critical functions like the Dialer and Contacts app? I find it irritating having the phone to constantly restart the application when coming off the browser or some other applications. It takes a good 2 seconds to load it completely. I have tried clearing the logs etc. but I think having it in memory would really speed up its use.
Can such a thing be done? Or has it been done? Please comment, thank you

but anyway,
My solution is to download the AutoKiller app, and set it to whatever setting you like...go to settings, and find the running processes, long click on Dialer and select "Keep Alive"
Works for me. Always seems to stay in memory whenever I check running services. If you have any other task managers or app killers, be sure to "ignore" Dialer for those as well, so they don't close it either. Hope that helps. This is a great idea though, I've been introduced it along time ago, with no response, maybe you'll achieve otherwise. Good luck.

Thanks for the alternative solution However, I am hoping that it would automatically boot it into memory when the phone starts, instead of having to run it once before it gets shifted into the memory. Hope I am making sense... but I'll certainly try your solution.

Yeah, I tested your method and it works perfectly, just 1 second or less to switch. But as expected, I need to run it through Autokiller again when I reboot the system. I really hope that it can be autostarted and remained in the memory from the start. But that's a lot... this will have to do while we wait for a kind developer who may take pity on us on this matter

There is another app in the market called autostarts that you can set to start the dialer on startup, a long way of accomplishing what you want, but my work for you.

OP, it seems AutoKiller app will do this for you. Check this post in the How to configure Android's *internal* taskkiller thread.

Thanks for the advices guys. I have tried all of it, and as I am looking at the documentation for 'taskkiller' I seriously am sadden that it is more technical and complicated than "Spare Parts" simple feature of ticking a box
My phone at times loads things slower than usual, especially the dialer app when I have more than 10 call log contacts, etc. I guess it is a HTC Dream problem with its now ancient 528Mhz processor. *shrug*
If a developer can help out on this, it would be great

It is not complicated at all.
1) Install AutoKiller
2) Start AutoKiller
3) Allow it root access permanently if it asks, relaunch AutoKiller
4) Click on Processes tab
5) Long press on Dialer
6) Choose "Keep Alive"

I understand the process. When I say it is complicated, I am referring to the need to redo every 5 steps whenever my phone is restarted. I restart my phone daily, and would find that having to relaunch Autokiller, and click this and that is more complicated than just clicking a box 'once' and not needing to worry about that anymore. In fact, this is the problem stated in the thread given under "durability". Thanks again.

I still hope there will be a kind developer who will help with this request. If the solution can be incorporated into a ROM like cyanogen's ROM, even better. Thank you anyone who may be interested.

I agree that this feature is a good idea and should be more standard. Making calls is the primary function of our devices and as such, I should be able to do it instantaneously. On my last non-smart phone, I was able to push talk and get the dialer in like, 1 micro-second. On my G1, I've gotten more used to waiting anywhere from 2 to 5 seconds.

I would love this feature to be implemented in the future.

I too have been looking for a way to set the oom of a few processes to -17 so they'll never close. I've used autokiller, but i too hate that everything has to be set after every boot. I've set the minfree values through custom_init on my hacked up version of StupidFast 1.2, and I'd love to be able to set the oom values there too.

Well I am currently looking in the android source for a way to set it...
playing around with adb shell a little. will report soon
as long as I am doing this, you can still use the rom from above... HTC dialer is just sooo much better when it comes to speed, memory consumption and usability...

possible for badness (this value) is anything from -17 to +15...
-17 will never be killed, no matter what.

Advanced task killer...showing a diff available memory everytime i kill the same apps

hey guys not sure if any of you are experiencing the same problem with advanced task killer
but as the title describes, every time i open advanced task killer the same apps that i killed previously is on the list again showing that its in use...is that just the way it is or is there a way to shut those apps off for good?
and then on top of that, every time i kill the same apps the amount of available memory shows a diff #.
any input is much appreciated.

I think the closest thing you can use for now would be the auto kill feature lol but that's not an amazing option either! As for memory I've experienced it an all and perhaps someone can explain to us both! I'd really like to know..

Hi - I think that the processes that you're referring to in ATK are kindred of those found in the Windows OS and the like - they are processes that need to be running for the phone to function.
I too noticed the vast difference in the available memory fresh after each kill - I've pegged it down to the old rule of thumb, smart phones need to be rebooted every 48 hours or so - just like a computer, rebooting is the best way to free up RAM (or in this case, sweet sweet x10 memory).
Personally I reserve ATK for when I exit an app that doesn't in fact have an "Exit" option in it's in-app menu; just to be sure that the process has been killed.
Hope that eases the brain strain

ive started to use fastreboot.. reboots the phone without having to switch it off.. does it instantly and helps free up ram!

This does not really resolve the issue does it. I need to restrict programs to start on reboot, thats all I need. I know there are applications are causing the battery drain.
Im left with this stupid device now.. really want to move away now.

Well there aint much that can be done about that. Just gotta hope someone manages to root the phone and then you can delete those programz you don't like!

Which Is the Best Task Killer?

What has been the best task killer for anybody. Im posting this threads cause myself have been wondering, which of all of them in the market is the best 1 for a phone. As for me i have a mytouch slide, Not rooted 2.1update1. I have been using Advance task Killer Pro, n has been wrking fine. But for some reason now my battery has been draining. So can u all plz let me know another good task killers out there. Yes ive heard is bad by killing apps, but i jst dont never understood why. So let me know what you all use thank u, n appreciate it.

I like system panel it gives a lot more info about what apps are missing behaving. Watchdog is real useful also.

Task killers are a bad idea, because as soon as you kill them, Android starts loading them back into memory, which wastes battery.
There's a whole bunch of levels of memory usage for apps, and task killers generally group them all together. Most of those apps being "killed" aren't actually loaded - they're cached, memory that can be dropped at a moment's notice when something else needs it. And the cached apps will start right away, since they're already in memory.
With a task killer removing those from memory, now there's lag because it has to be re-loaded, plus general lag from Android re-caching some of them.

I Use Adv. Task Killer, Also I Never Really Have A Issue With The Battery, But If You Notice Sometimes, After Killing A App, It Comes Right Back.... At That Point, If You Have The Adv. Task Killer Version I'm Using (V1.0.0 Build1) You Will Also Have A Service Button, Where You Can Go To The App That Keeps Restarting, & Touch It To Force It Closed, After That Your Battery Life Should Be Great!!

But it still boots up though even if you force close it. I'm assuming at that point you are wasting battery trying to close it several times.

And this is why I had my previous post. torvick12 said he never understood why it's bad to kill apps, so I gave him a reason - and here's another person saying basically the same thing, just, without the why Android does what it does.

It Boots Back Up Sometimes, But Instead Of Long-Pressing On Whichever App It Is Restarting, Press The Service Button (In Adv.Task Killer App) That Should Shut It Down Once (Twice The Most) For Good!!

I Used Autokiller
I Also Have Autokiller Installed, But More Or Less Only Use The Presets, Mainly Cause I'm Not Sure What The Settings Are Spose Tah Get Set Too.

They aren't "running". They are loaded in memory for quick access to them. If something else needs that memory, the os will unload something from memory itself.

task killer pro is what i use to use back on ver 2.1 and 2.0.1 but if you ever get onto froyo or Gingerbread it's best not to even use a task killer at all.

If you're really interested, you can read lengthy technical writeups on how Android manages its apps.
If not, then you need to accept the fact that those apps are cached in memory and are not actively processing or using battery and there is no reason to kill them (unless they are acting up, in which case, I believe Eclair, but at least Froyo, and up have a built in task killing feature). That memory will be cleared when another app takes priority.
Think about this: your automated task killer is showing you only have 5% free memory! You kill those apps and you now have 95% free. WHAT GOOD IS THAT MEMORY IF IT'S NOT BEING USED ANYWAY? I reiterate, the memory would have been cleared regardless when another app took priority.

Autokill Mem Optimizer Goes Crazy... Even kills self

Hey everyone...
I'm running a cappy with CM nightly #104. I upgraded 2 days ago and everything was running well.
I installed Autokill memory optimizer to help keep things running smoothly. I set it to the aggressive preset and it worked fine for a day.
Today - out of the blue - nearly everything on my phone started 'force closing' email, gapps, apps when opeend, etc. Even autokill force closed after only being open for a second or two.
I uninstalled autokill and things seem to have returned to normal.
Did I miss something? I found a website that's a kind of guide for autokill. I like the program and think it should make things run more smoothly... but this was very strange.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: It started again with a few apps constantly closing (gapps, email). This time I uninstalled autorun manager and things went back to normal.
We'll see how it goes since I don't know of anything specific I did that would make that sort of thing happen.

The advice is NOT to use any task kill/auto kill app. They do more harm than useful, especially in newer Android OS.

Thanks... That's kind of annoying, but makes sense.
Is there a better way to optimize memory usage? I have apps that seem to lag more on the newer OS after a min or so of usage. (EX: words with friends)

I would suggest the supercharger v6 script in android general section. Worked wonders for me. Dlev5, talon.

Android keeps things in ram on purpose - to optimize switching between apps. The apps are not actually running; they do not actually use any cpu cycles, they're simply memory resident so the OS doesn't have to retrieve them off the flashrom chip each time you want to load something. The alternative (removing an app from ram each time you close it) will actually force Android to retrieve it from storage each time you want to run it, meaning it'll use more cpu cycles, increase loading times, and needlessly waste battery power.
Android also keeps a pool of minimum ram free that it needs to provide a smooth desktop environment. It'll automatically kill apps and services in a set order if it needs more ram for itself or a foreground app. Those task-killer apps have been hurting Android's performance since 1.6.

Autorun manager is something I can't live without. You do have to be careful with it though.
Only use advanced mode. Basic mode is essentially a task killer.

Task Manager

Hey guys I'm coming from a Samsung Galaxy Prevail on boost mobile and prior to that I had a Samsung Galaxy
S on At&t. I toyed around with both, rooting and all that good stuff... Anyway I've been spoiled by Samsung's Task Manager apps. They both had straight-forward task killing "End All" command. Even my prevail kept the same task manager app once I updated to gingerbread. The motorola task manager is sorely lacking in my opinion. I've tried Advanced Task Killer app from the market and go launcher task manager widget and they both seemed bulky, I didn't care for them at all. Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe is there a way to install my prevail's old task manager, or even pull the one from my girlfriends samsung infuse?? thanks y'all!

before you get bombared with "you don't need task manager" well IMO you do need one and A2 got a nice one. It is tedious to setup but once you set it up its will help you clear those precious ram ^_^v I usually just put Games on the end after 2 minutes and apps that I don't need to be running on the background such as market hehe.
My habit: I use the phone, turn off screen(power button) then set it aside ^_^
if i don't play games such as Megamall story (which is a battery killer) i usually last 1 day and a half without charging.
I do play games a lot I mean all day type not 10 minutes to 30 lmao. Never felt my phone being sluggish thanks to A2 Task Manager ^_^v. You may also try the plugin for go launcher (never tried it hehe).

what are some of the things you include in your task manager? just thought id try it

I included all except GO launcher, slideit, widgetlocker, 3gwatchdog, battery circle, bluetooth toggle, bluetoothdun, rlock, silent toggle widget, wifi toggle widget.
Too many to list all the apps that I included lol, so basically what ever i use all the time I exclude them
Some games are persistent so I suggest you uninstall those

I just want to point out that task managers are usually pointless. It takes the same amount of energy to store nothing in the RAM as it does to store an app in the RAM, and apps that you recently opened but aren't currently open are "frozen" and don't consume battery unless the dev purposefully makes it stay running. If the phone runs out of empty RAM then "frozen" apps will be completely terminated.
The only time you would want to manually kill an app is if it is misbehaving.

You are right it is pointless to have a task manager that is why they have it on every single OS currently out right now even though you can't see it like in windows there is still a task manager(sort of) working in the background keeping your ram clear. With our A2 there is somewhat 500+mb of ram always reserved for system use that leaves the system somewhat 500mb of ram for apps which is around 50% of ram. I bet there is a trigger for the ram to clear at 80% of ram being occupied. The system will say " OH no there is 200mb of ram left what would I do"^_^v by the time you see that you will feel the 1ish second slughish reaction time from either opening an app or text messages/ keyboard. I you are like me who likes to play games I wouldn't want my phone to slow down while in the middle of the game.
Bottom line is if you don't have that much of ram being eaten out just by regular use by all means don't use it, but if you are a regular app launcher (15+ games) I would suggest using it. Besides it doesn't require that much of energy to auto kill because it does it if you turn off the screen and leave the phone for more than 2 minutes alone.
