In this stock ROM contains the flying windows animation (thx to madhuranand007) and Live Wallpapers app (with the funny Mortal Wombat theme) so i removed the samsung layar application because of need some space in factoryfs.rfs
You can unzip and flash with odin in these file exactly like a stock rom:
uncheck One Package

PHONE: I5800XXJP4_PHONE.tar
PDA: I5800XXJPF-REV02-PDA-CL794643.tar
CSC: I5800OXXJPF-CSC-MULTI-OXX.tar

there are many ways to remove preinstalled apps, but you have to be rooted.
i use absolute system, it has other goodies too and it is quite easy to unistall such an app.

I know how to remove apps from my phone after the flash, but i want to remove apps from ROM.
you remove the app from your phone (after a fresh install) and then create the rom from the phone with dd

you can mount the stock factoryfs.rfs in linux.
You can change the files in system/app. You can umount and flash with odin...

I think it's work to a certain limit. I deleted the layar.apk from factoryfs.rfs in /system/apk and after that copy LiveWallpapersPicker.apk and modify the gps.conf in /system/etc/. Afterthat umount factoryfs.rfs and tar to the PDA file.
...and there is a working ROM with live wallpapers...

Q. How Do I use the Update.zip?
A. Go to Market & Download Defy SD-Recovery & Install..
1. Next place the Update.zip on the /sdcard via PC
2. Turn on MoTo Phone Portal ( SD-Recovery is SD Based so you need to Turn Off USB Mass Storage )
3. ADB Debugging does not have to be Turned Off on my version
Once Booted into the Recovery apply the update.zip
wait a few minutes & it should be done...
Please Reads the notes I left in the Update.zip if you build a Custom Update.zip, this will save you trouble down the road.
What's Flashed?
A. Boot.img
B. dev_tree
C. Moto Blur 3.4.2 Rom ( Yes I know it's not the latest, built off what I had )
D. UNO & TMO-TV Removed
E. Rooted ( SU & Superuser )
F. Busybox Installed to xbin
G. Rest of Rom is stock
Once installed, remove eugene.apk from /system/app ( Old boot strap that need adb turned off before rebooting / defy sd-recovery does not have this issue)
Q. I Edited the update.zip & Now it fails verf. in recovery when trying to flash!
A. example of signapk on signing the edited update
java -Xmx1024m -jar signapk.jar -w testkey.x509.pem testkey.pk8 update1.zip update.zip

Glad to see you working on Defy too
I think this will be major help for developers and btw that 3.4.2 version did you used? since there are many of them.
Thanks.

i don't understand. is the boot.img still the signed cg35.smg?
if so, can't we just use the cmw to do that?
can you post more detailed chages you made over cmw?
other than the signapk and usb debugging described.
many thanks.

Greetings
you can not use cwm due encryption. If you dont know what an update.zip is stick to nandroid...
This is for rom builders.
Heading out, when I get home ill make it clearer.
Though, now that I think about it cwm might be fine due to the nature of how it works.
Ill test later and let everyone know

So we are able to install updates via the "normal" Motorola Recovery mode? So we are able to get a "unbrickable" Defy?
Edit: got it myself. The ZIP File won't be recognized by the motorola recovery... anyway thanks for your job
Now, what can SD-recovery do? Can it write other partitions, like cdt.bin?

CwM can do exactly the same afaik, i've already made quite a few update.zip with it.
after reading all your notes, do you actually mean that we can't use format on those patitions?
if you do, well, i learned it the hard way, and delete_recursive also works for me.
thanks for putting up an excellent example if not for anything else, it's much needed.

Correct, you can only format with the stock recovery ( Hence the reason why I used the Stock Recovery ) any Partition with cwm recovery will cause a non-booting system..
regarding cwm I've not tested it, so Likely it will work.. Steven is still working on the cwm recovery & there is no point in me adding another cwm bootstrap recovery... Mine is just pure stock & works perfect.
I'm still weeding through the /bin /etc file's to find exactly what needs left...
but main goal was to provide an example of what is needed to make an update.zip with out breaking the system.
what exactly is the benefit of this new method?

[HOW TO] activate JIT on 2.2
PEOPLE. NO OFF TOPIC HERE!
if you dont know what JIT is it basically speeds up your phone, very recommended! more info ---> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just-in-time_compilation
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi all! i know some of you want to test JIT complier... so i did a little research and found greek forum ---> http://www.myphone.gr/forum/showthread.php?t=286161
there our friend kyrillos13 has posted a way to activate JIT. so heres guide in english how to do it:
Activation Wizard of JIT
You need to install the root explorer (find it by searching on google). After the installation will take you to leave a message superuser. Press allowed. Download the file from here http://www.multiupload.com/9HK3NP4MML Unzip and copy the system folder on your memory card. With root explorer access the bin folder, select all the files and copy them to the path / system / bin / on your mobile. Upon return to the system folder that you copied to your phone and open the folder lib. Select all the files and then copy the path / system / lib / on your mobile. Then execute the commands listed in the file folder JIT instructions to download either via the adb pc or terminal emulator through the phone. Stir in and reboot. Download from the MARKET linpack do the install and run. If you pull MFLOPS 7 + (maybe even 11+) your ok. The linpack is optional. The jit will work anyway. just if you have doubts about whether you did it right then test it with the linpack (from market)...
the commands:
(adb shell) write this IF using ADB,
su
chmod 755 /system/bin/dalvikvm
chmod 755 /system/bin/dexopt
chmod 755 /system/bin/logcat
---------------------------------------------------
automatic batch script is the best way!!
-tested on: kyrillos 3.3 and 3.0, lestatious 1.7 with fugumod 2.2 BE, odexed JPM rom+fugumod 2.2, normal JPM, normal JPF, normal JP3.

Here's a packaged version of ARMV Team's files designed to enable JIT.
The zip contains a batch script which automatically pushes the files to your phone, chmods the relevant ones and then reboots your phone.

Which task has the build.prop in /System/ ?
Everywhere you can read that you have enable Jit in this file,
but I can't see any difference if I write : dalvik.vm.execution-mode=int:jit
or if I erase this.
If I change the the heapsize, I can't see any differences too.
Can anybody tell me something about the build.prop ?

GOOD JOB
Tried JASUX links, 8,3MFLOPs instead of 2,8 - good improvement.
Using Lestat 1.7, Fugumod 2.2 no OC
Quadrant improved from 320 to 380.
Copy/Paste with Root Explorer, CHMOD with ADB.
I hope the war about "who own`s the Linux" is over now.
Anyone tried ARMV batch? Scores?

Well, I was struggling to get JIT for three days before it came up here.
All I learned about JIT is that you have to have DEODEXED ROM and be ROOTED. This package of JIF is specific to our phones but do you have to be on JPM - I`m not sure. This may even work for Eclair. Until not tested can`t say. I`m not going to test it on Eclair or any other version and who does have Eclair anyway nowadays
If I`m wrong please correct me.

Just boot rom's boot img. If you are getting "device unable to boot bla bla" error, just type fastboot flash mdtp_a (and mdtp_b) mdtp.img

Can you explain more? Or get a version without root?
