Hello Guys,
Yesterday I upgraded to 2.2 froyo using Samsung Kies. Before upgrading, I did a factory reset to avoid running into any complications after or during the upgrade. Overall, the upgrade process was successful.
However, now my phone is running much slower, choppier - especially the browser. Even though I am getting better results in Linpack, i.e. 14-16, I am getting worse results in Quadrant, i.e. 1,800-2,000 instead of 2,200-2,300.
What is the problem? Anyone else ran into the same problem as me? I though upgrading to froyo would make my Captivate faster?
Thanks,
JUNG-NA
I completed the upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2 using Kies over the weekend. That was not a straight forward process. I am noticing speed issues now, especially with the transitions and the pull down notification bar. The pull down notification bar has a 2 to 3 second delay. Original Quandrant score was between 800 and 900 and after the update the score is ~1000, i have not applied any lag fixes and the phone is unlocked and rooted.
The update was a leak and older, so it's un optimized. Either flash back to ji2, flash a voodoo kernel, or flash another custom rom.

well, it was slow after i used kies to upgrade, today i wiped everything off my system, and did a clean install of http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LRH9TZTF this guy.

Can't speak for everyone but I've done a lagfix on a Telus Fascinate and a Bell Vibrant(I9000M) and Quadrant was getting around 2200-2300 with 2.1 and only around 1900 with 2.2 so it seems normal.
Even with these numbers, the phone felt a bit faster with 2.2. Have only heard of 1 incident with GPS being wonky.

So I'm a total noob when it coes to this, but I managed to get the 2.2 onto the phone and it rooted. (I checked with titanium backup) I ran a benchmark and its still saying im in the 900 range.. Any suggestions or answers to speed it up a little?? Please and thanks!
Benchmarks are not reliable at all in determining real world performance. Just because it says a lower number doesn't mean it is slower. If the phone feels fast then that is really all that matters, and with the captivate, you already have one of the fastest phones on the market.
If you really want that number raised, make sure you have a lagfix active. My captivate gets around 1500 on designgears 2.2 cognition rom with voodoo lagfix. On 2.1 cognition, I was getting 2300+ in quadrant, but my phone was much slower overall. Reliable? I think not...

Ya, a custom ROM with a kernel that has lagfix (i think all of them do) is really the best way.

Sorry being a new member I could not reply directly to this thread under developers but I wanted to let people know that this rom should be avoided. The default clockspeed is downgraded from 1.5ghz to 1.2ghz with this and even when overlocked back to 1.5ghz it's still not as fast as before. Linpack hardly even hits 150 now when before was around 200. Quardrant scores is also very low now, the memory and IO scores were significantly lower than before.
As for those who are having the wifi issue, i discovered that the problems started happening after the one click root. Right before I rooted this new rom i was able to connect to my wifi just fine, after the root it started having problems connecting.

What proof do you have of this? I don't see any difference in performance. I guess I'll just wait for the next update.

Wowsers! That's good to know. I haven't updated yet as I'm on Rogers, but I'll keep that in mind when a Rogers version comes around.
As for the WiFi issue, I've had it the whole time. I went 9 days before rooting, and it's been maybe 15 days since I rooted. It existed pre- and post-root for me.

I went from the full detox to 1.82 and after start up i ran both quadrant and antutu benchmarks. I noticed that quadrant score was only 4k when it used to be 4.5k. antutu was also lower and thats when I noticed the clock speed being listed at 1243 mhz (something around there). I downloaded the antutu cpu master free and it allowed me to move the slider back up to 1512 mhz.
Only sharing what I expierenced, now i'm trying to go back to 1.73 and having trouble...seems like it doesn't want me to move back down.

Ok, im curious, what program is reporting to you that your clockspeed is 1.2? Im not doubting what you are saying....at least not completely. I ask because when i was researching the phone before it was released on ATT, i was reading reviews and reports of people benchmarking the ATT demo phones and how the clock speed was 1.2 compared to the 1.5 of the tegra 3. So, im curious if its maybe just that the actual app you are using is reporting it wrong OR, if this is even possible, that maybe there is a different kernel with the clock set differently that somehow slipped through the cracks.
I have done the update already, and all my benchmarks are almost identical to what they were before and my clock speed is still 1512 as it was before.
As far as the wifi issue, most people were reporting that issue before root was even possible on this phone so to point there as being the culprit cant be right.

Antutu benchmark listed it at 1.2ghz. Previously it was at 1.5ghz on 1.73. I was stupid and tried to run full detox after the upgrade and root and got some kind of error saying memory full. Now the phone is soft bricked. I just tried the stock 1.73 RUU and its giving me a boot 140 error saying bootloader mismatch.
Any ideas?

Im guessing that like the only other HTC phone ive owned, downgrading wont happen without s-off. So the only thing i can suggest is to instead try going back to 1.82 and get the phone functional so at least its not a brick and if its still showing an incorrect clock speed maybe you can get an exchange.

My phone runs much smoother with the new update...almost like a different phone. I could care less what the benchmarks say...I'm a real world guy.

I was lucking, using the 1.82 RUU again I reflashed it and now the phone is back up and running. Running antutu I see the clock speed is now defaulted to 1.5ghz again.
I really don't know what screwed up with my clockspeed before, but hopefully this will work nicely now.
1.73 here...
5,013 -- Quadrant Standard
So perhaps something is just wrong with you're phone. Also, I thought you couldn't modify your clock speed without unlocked bootloader + root/s-off or whatever. I know the basics, Just not the full technical explanation of it all. Sounds to me like you have a problem though from the beginning to have <5K of a quadrant score.
Just removed everything I dont need. De-oxed and removed bloatware + added a couple games. Cleared "multi-tasker" and used task manager [not the stock] widget to free up memory... Which made it go to 4,760. So doing all this stuff to "help" somewhat backfired. Im wondering if its the task manager widget/app always running :b Idk. Point is, I think its your phone. Even if i'm not at 1.8~.

good to know. and FYI, though it's not my forte, i was reading either the "Update 1.82" thread or the thread with the title named the same as the 1.82 patch (can't recall which one) and I remember someone mentioning that to roll back to 1.72 after upgrading, you need to edit a certain .apk file, which, if done improperly, will totally brick the device. glad you were able to get 1.82 to run properly. I've decided to wait for the full OTA from ATT since my wi-fi issues are generally minimal.
Scores are lower on the 1.82 but same clockspeed I'm fairly certain. Dont know why. Quadrant drops about 500 points. Still seems faster.

The IO score is lower now. Can't wait until Franco or someone else releases some kernels that will really make this phone rock. I had a galaxy nexus before with the stock rom but running Franco latest kernel that boosted the Quadrant score from 2200 to 3600. Mostly it was due to enhancements that dramaticlly increased memory and IO performance.
I installed the leaked update and my wifi still doesn't work right. It is extremely slow and crashes my entire network and brings it to its knees. Wifi will not work on a single device when my one x is connected to my wifi network. Ideas? Has anyone else experience this?
I hadn't thought of this being the cause but I have noticed that my wifi at home, specially when watching netflix is way slow. I always have my wifi on my HOX turned on when at home. I'm on 1.82 and running Clean ROM 2.3. Are you saying that this could be causing my slowness on all my devices that are also hooked into my wifi at home?
Just wanted to see if anyone else in here with the soak test build is noticing a 4.1.1 experience that is lacking. 4.1.1 on my Xoom seems to be missing the buttery smoothness in Project Butter. All stock, and the screen transition's frame rates are the same as in 4.0.4. The new transition effects are there, but it's far from being as buttery smooth as my Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus.

I'm pleased somebody else has noticed this, I've only had the OTA update for a couple of hours and was wondering what all the hullabaloo was about.
Performance and responsiveness seems on par with ICS IMO, Perhaps it will improve with a factory reset which I will do later.
Using Dolphin browser I have noticed that some video reports on online news sites seem to be very stuttery and not as good as they were with ICS, presumably due to the lack of flash support in JB.
I just got OTA 4.0.4 ICS (wth) wheres JB?
My experience is different. I always Factory Reset my devices when changing OS names (HC to ICS, ICS to JB) as I don't like having all the settings/configurations/app data stuff "upgraded" in place and prefer a clean install of the OS (upgrade OS then Factory Reset) and then configure and install my apps.
I was running my Xoom on stock ICS with root and a 1.5ghz kernel. My Xoom on stock (but rooted) JB at 1.0ghz feels exactly the same if not even a tad smoother more fluid, especially switching between apps. Even running 500 Mhz slower, it suffers no loss and feels to have made a some gains. Looking forward to running an overclock kernel on JB.
ICS 4.0.4 @ 1.5 ghz smooth/fluid
JB 4.1.1 @ 1.0 ghz just as smooth/fluid, maybe even a little more

Mine was running like garbage after the update as well. Had the same issue after the ICS update (resolved that by taking the images off of my Xoom). This time I went ahead and did a factory wipe. Night and day difference - the thing is flying now.
Just got JB. Not really impressed so far tbh. No visible difference in speed, and animations are very laggy now.
Edit: Also, the boot animation hasn't changed. Starting to wonder if something's gone horribly horribly wrong here. (Version: 4.1.1, build number JRO03H)

Hey I'm a noobie here but I wanted to ask if I upgraded to a 4.0/4.1 rom would I run into any performance issues? (lack of processing power/lack of ram, etc)
Also, should I expect a decrease in battery life or an increase?
Thanks!

I experienced lower battery life and performance issues.
From apps taking longer to launch to general lagginess of the rom. Other users have complaints about that in the various dev threads.
I started a thread in general about my downgrade to cm7. I have to say it makes the cappy feel new after using various laggy ics/jb roms.
But as with all things your mileage may vary. Not everyone complains about the upgrades.

Thanks, that was definitely something I was worried about. I actually recently started to use the Captivate because my old iPhone 3GS just ran terribly choppy (along with a much decreased battery life) with the newer iOS that was forced onto it so I don't want that kind of situation to reoccur.
I'm personally running the Slim Bean 2.1 rom which is Android 4.1. Other than the small bugs listed on their site, my phone is running butter smooth with no issues. As a moderate user to heavy user, my battery lasts pretty much the whole day and some. You just gotta follow the dev instructions and do your research.
I am currently running slim Bean, but I also ran slim ics. Which I felt that my phone has never run better on either of these two roms... Battery life was about the same for me between gb, ics, and jb.

One of the great features of ICS/JB is the battery settings option. From here, you can see what is draining your battery. When I flashed CM10 a few weeks ago, I noticed one of the widgets I used on CM9 was draining the battery big time (30-40%). So I disabled that widget and now I get battery life that is equal if not better then stock GB.
I've also ordred some 1800mAH batteries from Amazon which will definitely get me through a work day.
I'm currently Paranoid Android JB, and the battery life difference from 4.0 is negligible, but from 2.3, it's quite a change. As far as lag, it would be pretty bad if I was unable to OC it. Currently comfy at 1200MHz with the ondemand governor, and battery life is still better than GB.
I was stock GB for ages and had decent battery life. Then switched to CM 7.2 and had a horrible battery life. Switched to CM 9.1 and it isn't any better. So I ordered a 1800 battery, hopefully it will improve things.

I am bit novice here on ROM .version build etc. but its running 4.0.3 Build - IML74K eng.
I notice my captivate is now bit laggy in opening up cameraand some apps but not that significant.
Actually It has solved many issues when i was running gingerbread earlier with too many forceclose issues , choppy signal , calls dropping etc.
Also I noticed my network signal is much better and shows " H " instead of 3g earlier. I did not know captivate is compatible for H and not just 3g.
I did notice te browsing is much much faster than gingerbread. ginger bread was horrible than the previous OS.
I was bale to browse in the same places where I was not even getting any signal to make voice calls , the Signal reception is great with ICS now . Not sure how a OS can affect the signal reception.
over all i am happy with ICS on my captivate.
My battery is so awful, I already bought an 1800mAh battery but it didn't really seem to help

The ICS browser has been reworked and made better. It is faster and a lot more stable than the GB browser. Signal quality could be due to the fact that the i9000 with ics has newer and better modems. Btw im looking at your link and i noticed that you flashed a rom from the i9000 forums. I would suggest that you flash a rom from i897 forums. Even though both phones have similar spec they are very different and that could be the cause of your lag.
For those of us that have dealt with lag on JB 4.1.2 and are using Touchwiz I've created this thread to spitball, trouble shoot or even complain about it.
From what I understand it's Android 4.1.2 related. I've been reading that it's an issue with TW and 4.1.2 itself. Some have suggested that using a custom launcher will help get rid of the lag. I've seen this be true on Nova. I have been able to get no lag on TW only by not having any widgets on the home screen. This leads me to believe that part of the lag is a result of having to render the widgets and load the information there within.
Others complain of lag during gaming (Temple Run 2 is a big one). I've looked through the forums, and searched multiple threads and it appears that other S3 variants and even tablets like the Tab 2 is having issues with 4.1.2. My G Note 10.1 had it as well.
So in the hopes of figuring out what the culprit actually is or even to vent frustration at such things here we are.
If there is a thread already like this MODs please let me know and/or close it. :good:
I don't use any widgets and I get crazy lag while playing ingress. I've only ran touchwiz and its lagged on all. Sucks but not that big of a deal.

I also get lag and/or lockups on occasions. On stock rooted 4.1.2. So is not just CleanROM. I may go back to 4.1.1. I can't seem to find enough benefit to stay on the current stuff. I've tried different kernels, etc. No dice. The only game I play is candy crush, and it's HORRIBLE. Everything moves in slow motion. LOL. It sticks how the mods handled this, I feel it is relevant. It's an issue, well known. There are MANY complaints about it.
I've had the same issues with Candy Crush. No lag on 4.1.1, and tons of lag in 4.1.2. Like you said, it almost looks like the app is in slow motion. I have yet to find a solution to this.
Man you guys are right on the money. I've reverted back to 4.1.1 because of all the lag. I'm currently on GalaxyMod Rls 13, which to me has the least amount of lag. Homescreens don't redraw, menus are smooth (for the most part anyway, you scroll back to the top of the settings menu and it tends to jump on occasions, no matter what ROM I'm using). I hope 5.0 addresses these issues. I remember how excited I was when 4.1 first dropped... Arguably the best build Android has ever made.

Some say they don't get lag. Just a theory here, but I went the OTA route, then rooted and unlocked. Got lag, even flashing back to 4.1.1. Thing is, I still had the current OTA partitions. So, I Odined back to K3. TADA! No more lag. Makes me think that possibly those that took the OTA are getting the lag because of the partitions that are updated. Those NOT experiencing lag are ones still on K3 partitions, but have flashed up to MB1 ROMs. Maybe? Just a theory.

The last that we notice is when doing things like texting. The keyboard is really slow to come up. And when the auto correct list comes up, it is very slow. Scrolling also seems to bog it down. I am not sure what is going on, but it is a definite step backward from 4.1.1. I how that there is a solution that does not involve going back to 4.1.1.

I wonder if the GS3 suffers from graphic redraws? Maybe it's not caching the images perpetually, only drawing them when needed. I've noticed this when it loads widgets, scrolling through menus, and when you have a lot of notifications(the drop down shade hesitates when it's opening and closing). I don't think it's hardware, as there are a few HTC phones with the same adreno GPU and they don't lag. My previous phone, the EVO 4G LTE, didn't lag at all, and they share the same adreno graphics hardware. Hero's Axis Rom addresses most of these issues, as my experience with his roms have been positive. It's not completely gone, but it's better than stock. I'd recommend using his rom if you have these issues.

under apps > Do not keep activities check box. Destroys processes after the user leaves them. Not so awesome for multitasking, but hey, whatever works, right? 262 MB used 1.7GB free . Seems like a win to me.
Do you guys overclock? This is just a theory, but overclocking or undervolting overclocking or flashing too many times seems to slow down phones. Have any of you guys tried to go back to stock and then factory reset and started over? I think that might help. Also, I do see lag, however I only see minimal lag, maybe its because I rarely have anything on my phone? I am also on stock kernel and that seems to work the best for me right now, I used to run custom kernels, but some of them keep causing issues and weren't stable enough or gave me worse battery life. I will try the new leankernel as I like leankernel from the galaxy nexus and have previously tried lean before and had a good experience. Hopefully this at least partially answers the OP's question
Well there have been 3 Touchwiz kernels that worked for me and that's leankernel, kt747 and Zeus. I only overclock to 1.8 ghz or 1.6 ghz those speeds give me the least problems.
I just ran temple run 2 just fine. Here is my setup. MOAR ver.18 latest firmware mf1, KT747 kernal.

I get at least 22hrs of charge with 39% left. I can't let drain down fully because i need it to be fully charged every night before bedtime. I basically charge it fully before bed and i'm left with 39 to 20% by 9pm the next day. I'm on wifi at home and 4glte at work.

last night i had a 3% battery drain within 5hrs. I think that's pretty awesome. While i'm asleep.
I'm with Verizon running BoneStock 3.2 and no lag at all. Fastest ROM I've used so far. With stock kernel
