ehhh ...
all you can really backup if your not rooted is your SD card contents, everything else is already synced with the mothership
all the app data is stored in /data/data and you need root on your device to access that, even ADB gives permission denied

Root without Superuser.apk

Modded the version my buddy dodgejcr put out for the shift to work with the g2x, tested and working on cm7 & miui. Just go into recovery and flash f-su.zip.
I know some people will disagree with me on this, but I think superuser.apk is unnecessary and a nuisance. Any app that can really do damage with root permissions probably has it's own root method built into it anyway, after all, how many rogue apps have only affected rooted phones? So I choose to grant root to every app I download, if I didn't want it to have access to my phone, I wouldn't have downloaded it.
Download f-su.zip here

Corrected. I should only be allowed to post after drinking.
You're right. I do disagree. You may understand the implications behind granting root access like it's an open door but for anyone who does not here goes. Root access to the file system means you can do anything to it. If granted root access, a renegade application can delete important system files and steal personal information. For instance, take Windows. Windows essentially runs the user at root level, not taking into account UAC in Vista on up. This is why it's so much easier to have viruses steal personal information, disable anti virus applications and delete system files. Superuser limits this access on Android to applications you specifically grant this access to. Is it necessary? No. Can renegade applications still attained root access even with it? Yes. However it just adds a layer of security that I find very useful indeed. Again though this is personal preference. I just wanted to make sure people who didn't know were educated before they do something like this. Carry on

Well thank you for stating your opinion in a respectful, thought out manner, seems to be rare these days.
Huge thanks man! I'm using this in my ROM (check sig ) to skip the SuperUser dialogs so the process doesn't get interrupted, then I revert it back to the normal SuperUser. Thanks a lot! =)

What I wanted to do was to have the su binary in a non-default path so that I can be root only when I access my device over USB, I do not want other apps to use it.
I guess this file works only for G2x right?
link not working
does someone still have f-su.zip?
Looking for that SuperUser.apk-less su binary once again, so...
*bump*
Anyone still have that f-su.zip? :/
Bump ! I remeber how great was this file, i integrated it into one of my old phone roms, but now that link for the rom is also down. DOES SOMEONE HAVE THIS FILE??

[mod] [x-post] Hide / Rebind Option Menu

Mod is listed under the international version of the one x, but i wanted to repost it over here so the rest of us aware of this awesome mod.
Original Thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1582506\
Basically it gets rid of the option bar at the bottom of the screen on non-ICS apps/games and makes the multitask/tast switch button, the new options menu.
Long pressing the home button becomes the new switcher.

Flashing an RUU does not erase files on /sdcard... I'm assuming you have them backed up in Titanium Backup? So this method should work for you.

I flashed the RUU and my music and photos are still there, but I lost all my apps because there stored somewhere else on the device (thanks HTC), at least that's what I thought.

That's what Zonk7 meant. Of course it wiped your apps. In order to be able to use most apps while SD card is mounted as USB drive, the apps are not stored in the SD card.
Hence the comment about Titanium backup.
Simply restore your apps after you RUU from the titanium backup you have in your SD card.
the mod should work for us Rogers users though, shouldn't it?

[Q] Is it possible to disable "Cell standby" app on a damaged phone?

My i9103 lost its IMEI by itself (100% stock phone). I tried to fix it in some service shops, but they all failed. It's hardware problem, they say. Since I cannot contact samsung to repair my phone, I am using it as a "tablet", and I'm ok with that
However, since the phone is damaged, battery consumption is huge. "Cell standby" and "Dialer" consume most of the battery. For example, after 6 hours "Cell stanby" - 73%, "Dialer" - 7%, "Display" - 5%, "Phone idle" - 2%.
Now the phone is rooted, with stock 2.3.6 rom. Whatever I tried to flash, some stock or custom roms, the problem was the same. The phone is in "airplane" mode, but once activated it cannot be deactivated. Turning off the radio from the config fail.
Is there any possibility to disable (remove) those applications from the Android using terminal emulator on rooted device?
Thanks!

As I already said, I tried to flash all possible roms, wiping cache and everything was the number one in to-do list.
That is the main reason why I posted question here. Maybe somebody know something about system applications, and how to do some hocus-pocus witchcraft on a rooted device If the question was so simple, I would handle it myself, probably

Contact user "Odia" via PM & wait patiently for his response (I.e you send a PM & wait for a reply, you don't send any 'reminders') & he may be able to fix it for you for a small 'donation' (Tho I'm not even sure if he still does this kind of thing).
If EFS backup is not there then its not possible to restore IMEI, only way is to go to SSC....

If you want a unlocked ls996 Sprint flex

Anyone with rooted 5.0.1 and with T-Mobile and AT&T if you could please pull your system folder from root explorer or some other file explorer that lets you do it and upload it for me. I will try and find a way to get the Sprint flex 2 (ls996) to run these system apps and have a full unlock for people trying to use the ls996 on other networks.

Nope... That stuff is stored in the data partition.... That stuff has nothing to do with system partation.. So ur safe.. All there is in the system folxer is what the phone is when its new or after a factory reset... Everything you do from the first button u click is stored in the data folder... Hope you understand
Alright, sent Justin a .zip of the system folder. However, as I mentioned to him, when I tried to copy the folder it would always end in root browser saying the operation failed, though many of the folders and items, 1.5gigs worth, successfully were copied. I'm planning on selling this phone in the next couple days for other reasons, unfortunately, but I hope I can help in others unlocking their phones from Sprint.
No problem. I got what I need. Thanks everyone

Can anyone explain what is "ROOT"? I always hear other people said they need to root. So in what situation you will root your Phone?

Root is basically the ability to access files and permissions that you normally cannot get to. It allows you to customize or alter things you can't mess with otherwise
