[Q] Possibly Bricked XT720? - Milestone XT720 General

Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated here.
I was helping my friend with his XT720, we first rooted it with Universal Androot, then, tried to partition the SD card with GParted. I thought I had it correct (the first partition was 6.5Gb and FAT32, the second was about 1000mb EXT2, and the third was 128mb linux-swap partition). We then attempted the optimizer script and had nothing but issues. Every time I tried the apps2sd it would give an error, something about the partition extension. So we tried slightly different partition layouts and everytime no luck. Apps2sd still failed every attempt, so we gave it one last try at this and we managed to get Busybox to install, cache-sd, optimized build.prop, (apps2sd still failed) but then when I went to install JIT for Froyo, the phone screen went black..we let is sit for a while and nothing. So we pulled the battery waited a few minutes and put it back in, it went to the all black screen with the Moto symbol.
Thats where we left off. I'm kinda shocked at how any of these steps could have lead to a bricked device and hoping someone can point me in the right direction as to how fix this.
Since I never installed rom manager (is it even compatible with the XT?) I cant just restore from nandroid. Is there a way to get this to factory restore or push a recovery image from adb? I heard RSD lite might be able to help me, but I'm not too familiar with it at all (yet).
Any help or guidance will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

flash back to stock rom using rsdlite. theres instructions somewhere on this forum

Search for recovery mode. Something like you have to hold in the volume up & the camera mode button while powering up. Clear the data & cache (possibly a few times) & then reboot. If that doesn't work the RSD lite should.
HTH

Thanks for the help guys. So from what it sounds like, it is in fact not a brick and very fixable?
Ill be attempting this shortly.

Also, any advice on how how to partition the SD card for apps2sd?

If you have a Linux box around, it provides the best solution. I booted into my Linux partition, put my SD card into the reader slot, and fired ''gparted''. First I shrunk the existing fat32 partition which was occupying whole 8G to 7. So no data is lost. Then create another primary partition of size 1G (whatever left) to ext2 (and format it). No swap needed. Works like a charm, done in 5 minutes, no data backup/restore necessary (though advised).

If you are on a windows machine, you can use MiniTool Partition Manager Home Edition. All partitions have to made "Primary" and the fat32 one to be "Primary" and "Active".
The partitions made by this tool were recognised by both apps2sd and app2card(didn't have to repartition) apps...

Well I successfully restored the device with rsd
I don't have Linux, however I do Gparted live on a CD that I can boot from, so I got that part covered.
Ill attempt the different partition layout mentioned and see if I have better results.
Do I enable Apps2sd with the optimizer script again or is there another method? I'm just hesitant to use it again since I had to restore after last time..

The script is what I used. I've seem some talk of an app called something like "app2card" (not on the market). There is an similar script on the driodformums.net website. It has a customized script for the CBW SBF. That's the one I ended up using, when I tried the version on this forum it kept errroring out at some point. They both do similar hacks (from my limited understanding) so I'm not sure what the problem was.

Just ensure that your partition matches the script's assumption. Like the script assumes /system is mounted from /dev/block/blahblah06, the ext2 partition of the SD card is /dev/block/mmcxxp02 ... if yours are different (mine was), edit install.sh accordingly before running it.

I'm having almost the same issue. I feel stupid. Tired after work. Blah!
I tried a similar app and transfered all my apps to the sd card. Partitions are fine.
For some reason my apps were not working though, and I tried some "fix" that started fixing working system apps on my internal memory. Now I only get it to boot the motorla logo.
I got into the repair options and cleared cache but same thing.
My wife has a nexus, I'm wondering if I can swap out the sd card or something. Checking out this thread. I have RSDLite. But I never flashed the rom or anything that I know of. Just rooted.
Time to read more!!!

Could you please explain how you restored with RSD? I think something is still on my SDcard or I trashed an app / resource it was trying to fix (App2card)
Phone just stops at motorola logo even after clearing cache / doing reset (holding button combo)
Thank you!

First you have to download & install the USB drivers from Motorola & the original SBF (needs to extracted) from HERE, then power your phone into bootloader mode (I think it was hoding in the volume down & shutter button while turning on the phone). Now when you run RSD you should see your phone in the device list browse to your SBF & start the process. It takes about 10 minutes but when your done your phone should be in a "fresh out of the box" condition. Also I should note that I couldn't get RSD to see my phone on my Win7 64 laptop but it worked fine on my XP machine.

Cool, my phone is seen.
Is there a way to save everything? I don't feel comfortable flashing with something from online.
I'm going to see if I can fix it. I tried to "repair/re-install" a system app / resource .apk
I'd like to try and fix it before I flash. I hope even though my phone is not booting past the logo, that I can "save" itin it's current state.
Thank you!!!

reboot it into download mode
hold in the volume up & the camera mode button while powering up
then the RSD will detect it

I had try to reboot n get inro the flash mode but my computer still not detec even i had up grade my driver... (

This is a port of One Click Lag Fix to the Galaxy 3 (i5800) :
You should do a factory reset before launching that fix (Recovery). IT WILL ERASE ALL YOUR DATA ! MAKE A BACKUP !
Your phone needs to be put in "USB Debug Mode"
Don't use this if you don't know how to flash your phone.
This is ALPHA software, you may have to reflash your rom if something goes wrong. You have been warned.
To install, just launch "lagfixme.bat" (or do it manually if you are a linux user like me).
You will get a 500-550 score at Quadrent, and the phone should be more responsive, but it won't turn your phone into a Galaxy S (don't dream too much).
You will only get 150mb (for now, you can try to change it for 160-170mb, but it might mean problems) for data .
I've only tried it on I5800XXJPA. I think it doesn't work on 2.1 firmwares, since i think they lack ext2 support.
I'm not responsible for anything that might happen to you after using this.
How to use it:
Root your phone (Using SuperOneClick for example)
Install busybox 1.17 from "stericson.busybox.apk"
Put your phone in USB debug mode
Launch "lagfixme.bat".
If i were you i will reboot.
Please give feedback

So this will basically leave me with only 40 MB free space on the phone? Or will my data now be stored inside this 150 MB file?
The applications/dalvik-cache/data will be stored in the 150mb file

No, because your apps are stored in /data/app (and /data/data and /data/system and /data/dalvik-cache), which means that all your apps will be on the 150mb file .

Good thing that someone has started playing around with the Galaxy 3..
Keep it up..
Hello, I tested this lagfix and he woorks correctly, but i have a small problem.
When I launch the music player a message appeared in the notifications saying free up space... I have nothing installed apps and i have reset to zero after and before the lagfix ...
Otherwise it's a good works!
Sorry for my bad english I'm a french ^^
You reset after the lagfix ? What do you mean (using recovery ? ) ? In what version your phone is into ?
I'm french too
I have reset to zero before have installed the busybox and apply the lagfix and after reboot the phone too.I have acces rooted and the lagfix works correctly.
But I have problemes with the sd card/ market. I am in froyo version JPA
I' have used your méthode. no for recovery mode.

What way did you use to reset the phone the second time ? (I mean, after doing the lagfix). You should not reset the phone after the lagfix (In fact, the lagfix did it itself).
I have used in the settings to restore the original settings.
But i just installed again and the probléme for music player is resolved. but no market i have a message saying who not have any space in the phone. So i supposed who the last space is reserving at the sms and cie. Because before the lagfix i have a similar message saying looks like at 40 mb remaining.
I supposed who this is due at the small space free. But is not very important for me because I used always music player and message.
Finally after 2 reboot always works correctly.
The market too. but I don't make a reset to zero.
Sorry fort my bad level in android ^^"
Good works =) And they apps move to ine the 150 mb space ?
Well, my phone crashed one time while a Titanium Backup restore, then worked perfectly, so i think it's the same problem.
In fact, (almost) everything from /data goes into the 150mb file. It could be larger, but you will have the boring "No space left" message which i hate (i'm looking for a workaround).
Is this gonna have any effect on my applications speed? Or only the phone is gonna be more responsive?

It works just fine. I verified this package on a device. I dont know where you got your version, but the one on sammobile.com is verified operational by me last night.
If you do not repartition while flashing bootloaders than you can have problems. This package is designed for a total restoration. Its likely you were using a package that some guy created and he didnt know what he was doing.
Im requesting that all comments pertaining to my package having bad bootloaders except this one be removed. This package is fine.

And he packaged it improperly. He either forgot to package the SBL or PBL, or he forgot to repartition. This package works. The PBL and SBL were flashed sucessfully.
Not everyone knows how to properly package a firmware flash. This flash is verified.
Stop the off-topic banter.

computer wont sd card on phone now
i used this to unbrick my phone but now it wont let my pc recognize the files on it. i plugged it into samsung mini kies and it recognized it. during installation it said it didnt work so i took out the battery and put it back in and then a screen with a phone and tiny computer popped up so i plugged it back into the heimdall program and it started working. it seems everything else is fine plus I guess it has gingerbread now but luckily i had backed up all my games 2 days before on the pc. plus the games are on the sd card but not on the phone. should I redo the heimdall program again? when i hit mass storage on the phone it makes the beep sound like the files will come up but nothing happens

*please hold off use of safe strap until further notice. I promise you we are hard at work on it************************************************************There is a new version at the bottom of the post. Please uninstall recovery from with in your currently installed v.1 then uninstall safestrap app. Download and install v.2 and install recovery. If you already have a safe system installed you will need to reflash the zip and wipe data/factory reset. Thanks Jim for the fix! There are now 2 different versions 1 for those not running jims webtop hack and one for those of you that are. Please download the safestrap appropriate for your setup at the bottom of the page. ********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
What works?
-Everything except mounting usb in recovery.
-Cant seem to format safe system /data
Here it is!!! Our very own Unofficial safestrap recovery!
Whats this mean? Custom rom's!!! CM7 CM9 etc! And no more fxz or cwm on every boot just to save from a softbrick.
How'd we do it?
This was a pain in the A**, Jimbridgeman and myself have worked our butts off on this. We changed the recovery.fstab around so that we are able to use the sd card as a mount point to install the /system partition as well as a separate partition for /data. So in laymen's terms, were booting from the sd.
How to Install -(From Windows)
(Partition sizes are up to you but ext3 partition should be no less then 350mb and the second fat partition should be not less then 500mb)
1.Backup your sdcard
2.Format your sdcard from your phone under settings-storage
3.Put your sdcard into some kind of card reader and place into computer
4.Download, install, and open Mini Tool http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
5. Right click on your sd card, click resize

6. Re size so that you have at least 850mb left "Unallocated"
7.Click OK
8.Click apply changes
9.Right click on unallocated partition and select create
10. Click Yes
11.I went with 1gb, this is the data partition, It needs to be at least 500mb and your settings must match mine. Primary,Fat32
12.Click apply changes
13.Right click on unallocated space, select create
14.Click Yes
15. This is the System partition and needs to be at least 350mb, Your settings must match mine. Ext3,Primay
16.Click on apply changes.
17.Click Yes.
18.You are all done! Should look something like this.
Now to install the safestrap

Special thanks to jimbridgeman and hashcode. (JIM... I LOVE YOU!!!)

I'm assuming that like with the razr if you are using the bootstrap with on boot you have to remove it before installing the safe strap version?
Thank you
I knew it was only a matter of time!!!!!!
Thank you guys
A link worth sharing http://hash-of-codes.blogspot.com/p/how-to-safestrap.html , this is the original safestrap for D3 and RAZR done by hashcode , take a look at his blog to understand more about safestrap if you are a noob like me.
but there is only one question i need to understand using this hack can we install roms on the 1st system ( device memory ) or just on the 2nd system ( SD Card ) ?
This is what I have been using instead of the bootstrap, to use my custom ROMS... it will allow you to use your paid version of CWM the way it should be used. You can now go into CWM and select boot to CWM or flash from sdcard while still in android, and it will boot you into CWM and start flashing....
Thanks for all your hard work!

So essentially, this is a dual boot system of sorts? This allows me to install a custom ROM and run it in Safe mode then go back to my factory ROM by turning off Safe mode?

This will not work to flash ANYTHING to your internal system. It will only flash to the safe system.
Got it thanks!!!

but is it ... 2012 ?
Should I wait to setup safestrap until you get this fixed, or can I go ahead with it and just replace the .apk later?

I'm working on it now so it'd probably be easier to wait.

[Q] Pantech burst wifi stops working completly

I have a Pantech Burst running 4.0.4 rooted. today the wifi cut off and is stuck on "turning on" but never does. I deleted cache from recovery menu, factory reset it, and flashed cwm on it (hoping a new flash would fix it) the only option I have left is flashing a whole new stock rom. is there any other way or something else that could be wrong? maybe wifi chip went out? got water damage last week but I took it apart and blew dry the innards before I used it. any help would be appreciated. If i have time I am going to flash the rom. IDK if I will still be here by time its done downloading though :b
I am trying to use a program called "p9070 download tool" which is supposed to flash it. ive never heard of it before. it flashes it from a .pdl file? well last time it froze so maybe it will work this time. computer is recognizing it. does anyone know of a rom I can flash with odin? thats the way im used to doing it, at least if this doesnt work.
in my opinion you should use pantech burst download tool..
odin is known for samsung phones and trying it on burst may brick your phone..so try to stay away from odin..
For some reason I cannot get it to work. It shows up "S/W upgrade" on my phone then the program freezes. Running win7 64bit. Also I tried turning on power saver and its doing the same type of thing the wifi is. A loading circle as if its turning on forever. Gives me hope that its not a fried wifi chip! Thanks for your reply.

just so you can see what is going on. for some reason it connected to pantech download tool yesterday but not today. notice it says "no data" for the phones info. it wont let me click download.
well I got it to go with my stepdads usb cord. problem is it bricked my device after failing! my phone is stuck on "s/w upgrading" ive tried booting into recovery, taking the battery out waiting a half hour and putting it back in, putting in fastboot ( said it could not connect to device) nothing is working. i feel screwed now. anyone have any idea how to fix this dang thing!?!? even if it invo;ves taking it apart disconnecting something and putting it back together. if it makes it go away ill do it. thinking about just getting a new phone at this point! maybe a better one. it wasnt bad but ever since the wifi issue it has been getting worse.
-update- got it booted using that program. it has reverted back to 100% stock gingerbread and wifi still isnt working. I am going to assume that the wifi is burnt out or has a corroded connection. can anyone tell me where the wifi chip is on the motherboard? I wanna try to see if i can clean any possible corrosion out of it and try it again
ok! the only option left for you is to flash a rom again using livesuit. find a rom for your phone which can be flashed with livesuit and let it do it's work-done now you can work everything on it again.. the steps for liivesuit can be found by googling it - clean ics rom (droid extra .com) [by the way don't flash that rom only follow the procedures]. try it, if any problem- comment!!!!
I'm pretty sure there's no problem with the chip and it could be a problem with the phone software or the router/network.
But wait water damage? oh well. I guess you can try:
You will LOVE the present cygenmod mod, the new rom:
Download available here:
http://code.google.com/p/devsnest-developments/downloads/list
cm-10-20130529-UNOFFICIAL-presto.zip
Upgrade to 4.0.4 from Pantech first though or else you'll have problems. The new CM rom is awesome, smooth, fast and bug free for all you need. You'll be amazed.
Get help here:

Backup your data, whatever you can (cost lists, etc).
Backup what you need into the SD card. Root, install recovery, copy google apps from that same link into SD card and also the rom. Check their hash codes to make sure you have the right files. Boot into recovery, and make sure you can access the two ZIP files in the SD card. Now format /system , /data, format cache and dalvik and then flash the rom and then Google apps.
Reboot and setup your phone.
We have been using this rom for many months and they have fixed all of the bugs (a few minor remain but they dont effect normal usage a lot). Only the following remain:
- compass
- BT Tether (Workaround - DUN using app BlueDun)
The rest are some minor bugs that people have noticed but it runs much better stock in any case.
Just ask around on the forum if you have questions.

thank you for all of this. turns out the wifi wasnt working because of corrosion. I took the motherboard out and cleaned the whole thing off with an old toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol. let it dry, put it together and wala. I had it on 4.0.4 then when i ran download tool it reverted back. its back on ICS now. re rooted. only thing that is really weird to me is the device is only recognizing 1gb internal memory. it comes with 12gb, and my computer recognizes it as 12.3gb. but i went to install a game and it said "low memory" so i went to uninstall and it said total memory was only 1gb.
I guess you can do some more drying/cleaning.
Water is conductive and if there was water when the phone was turned on at any time, it probably destroyed some chips. Memory and chips can be damaged by static shock for example.
So a short probably damaged the stuff. Cant be fixed other than a new motherboard. You could get a cheap broken screen phone from ebay and switch the motherboards.

[Moto G: 1st Gen. LTE - XT1045] Blank screen altought functional.

First of all, thank you for reading my post.
I'll try to point out what is going on right now iwith the phone (never saw it happen, ever).
Phone boots but shows a blank (black screen with faded light in the corners) after booting.
After several tries, found out that the 4G is on and receiving notifications (LED is blinking waiting for my response ) and I'm receiving calls nonetheless, so it is working but I can't use the screen.
The screen IS FINE, the boot shows up properly, the fastboot menu shows up properly, sometimes the icons and widgets shows up where they should be, the "Shut down" button shows up properly.
What seems to be the issue is that the upper tray with the time, data, and other things, and the down one with the "◁ ⭘ ▢" menu doesn't shows up AT ALL, so I just receive a blank screen.
Also, the computer isn't finding the phone even if it is connected through the USB cable.
I'm acessing the "Whatsapp" app in the computer right now, which requires the phone to be online and with a internet connection, meaning that the apps are functional and something really weird is happening.
The phone was working fine until last afternoon, just blanked moments after I got out of my house (when I first noticed the issue).
So... anyone willing to crack heads with me trying to figure out what the hell is happening here?
I'll provide pictures soon.
Thanks in advance!
:highfive:
EDIT1: seems to show this "Unfortunately System UI has Stopped" from time to time.
EDIT2: https://youtu.be/AS-wv0NB-g4 (recorded the issue) the 58s shows what i'm talking about.

Most likely a firmware issue

Most likely a firmware issue - may be a corruption has developed or could be an incompatible app update (Google Play Services or your launcher?) . Are you rooted? You haven't indicated what ROM you have installed (Stock, custom ...?). Is the recovery stock or custom? Can you enter recovery? Does everything look as it should in recovery? If custom, do you have a recent backup and have you tried running it? The 1045 is the US version I believe - are you sure it's not a 1040 (Canada/Brazil)?
Your best bet may be to install/flash another ROM, either stock or custom. Check out lost101's or vpnair's threads for stock firmware for your phone - they've done an excellent service by providing these ROMS and they are great. I've used both at different times to overcome some issues - may be the best way to go at this stage.
Good luck --- S.
Something caused and error in your firmware, you have to do the following:
1.- Try to backup your files. See if you can connect it to the PC and explore the files from there.
2.- Once backup is done, you have 2 ways:
A) Unlock bootloader, then flashing TWRP recovery, then installing a custom ROM like CyanogenMOD or AOSP.
B) Search and download the stock firmware file, extract the files, and then flashing it to your phone using mfastboot excecutable.
You can find the files and the info here in XDA thread, just do it carefully and read instructions.
If you can't find something say it and I can help, but won't spoonfeed you.
Good luck.

Stock and yes, 1045.
I've fixed the issue by restoring the phone through the fast boot (but lost all my data because I couldn't create a backup at all).
Case closed, thanks.

I'll migrate to the Oneplus 3 soon, but just so you know, I'll root the phone later on, couldn't find the cause of the problem and had to wipe the phone in order for it to work, so that's it, case closes. Thanks.
Good to know ...

If you run into the issue again at any point, your apps and some data can be backed up to your Google account. Additionally, it is worth rooting your phone and installing Titanium Backup (free) available on Play Store to back up all your data. Once rooted, make sure you backup your phone through recovery and copy the contents on your phone over to your computer from time to time, particularly the recovery backups and the Titanium backups. If you haven't created backups on your computer of all your phones folders in the internal and external divisions on your phone through a USB connection, another solution, in the event you lose USB, is to take out your SD card, insert it in a card reader and create matching folders for both internal and external (SD Card) on you computer and copy all the contents over directly from the card.
Takes a little time but backups can save your ass when needed.
