check your GPS before you walk out the door Before you put the battery in, look at the first four numbers on the second line of the inside sticker- this will be your build number - 1010 for example would be oct. 2010 - Seems those that have 1008 build have problems with 3 button recovery.
I created a new user guide/sticky/faq - see if does you any good. Click here to check it out.

Cognition us built on froyo leaks with improvements
Assonace, perception and a couple others are built on i900 base froyo but optimized for the Captivate
Axura is based off of a Vibrant leak but is solid
I would suggest reading the threads in captivate development and finding what you feel comfortable with.
I am currently using assonance and axura, obviously not at the same time but going back and forth
To do a backup you will need to root but you do not need to root to flash roms
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
If you plan on flashing your phone with a custom rom. I would suggest getting insurance or make sure you only do it within the 30 day return policy. It's nice to have insurance incase something goes wrong and your brick it.
Also make sure you get a case. This is typically the best one to go with. http://www.otterbox.com/Samsung-Captivate-Commuter-Series-Case/SAM4-CAPVA,default,pd.html?dwvar_SAM4-CAPVA_color=20&start=2&cgid=samsung-captivate-cases

All I can say is to go through the different ROM threads, look at the screen shots, get a feel for the thread itself and check out the change logs. One of the most important things is to ensure you are happy and that the ROM you choose is one that will do you good. Keep in mind you can always flash back to stock and choose a different one.
PS. I am the dev of Axura and it is blazing fast, GPS works great and the animations are to die for.
Have fun on the Captivate.

Okay I literally just got this phone yesterday and I see all this talk about Gingerbread and how great it is so I decided I want to try it. I know next to nothing about all the technicalities about this phone so I youtube'd how to do it and found this video that I plan to use to help me in the process. - watch?v=YuURgkUYn1A
So if I follow that process and use the files he uses, I should have Gingerbread and still have my connection to AT&T, GPS, and WiFi? Also, when AT&T finally does release it officially, will I be able to just go to Software Update on the menu and get the official AT&T Firmware and not have to worry about all this technical stuff again?

Try THIS link out, its got pretty much everything you want to know to get started(including vids). The only things that don't work on GB currently HDMI and on some of the roms, bluetooth. If you want to get the official OTA when it drops you will have to go back to stock, easiest way is to use THIS method. Also when GB does drop, Devs most likely will make their own roms based on the official GB.
Once your rooted and have recovery installed use THIS thread to find the ROM you want...
This is just a rough overview, so make sure you READ carefully and take your time, any question you have is usually answered in the appropriate thread.
Here is a link to the latest AT&T Gingerbread leak. Use Odin to flash it, and if you stick with the included stock kernel, everything works as it should. It looks very close to being ready for release. If you want it rooted, flash Entropy's kernel and then use CWM recovery and the Superuser zip you can find on here to install su. Then, flash the stock kernel again to keep everything working (video, bluetooth, etc.).:

That's legit Dman, it seems you learn a new trick on a daily basis; ports, roms and now kernels. I'm loving how the infuse development is still kickin!
So back on topic lol. Xia, Dman's CatyRom is one of the most recent GB roms (and plenty more), it's based off of the leaks from At&t. Once your ready, look into that!
Edit: Nevermind my question, dman, thanks anyway for what you're doing.
To the OP, a good AOSP Gingerbread rom that I keep coming back to is Serendipity VII. I hope that MikeyMike will still come back to update that one when we get the official AT&T Gingerbread.
You can find that here.: http://serendipityinfuse.weebly.com/

Hello First time poster , but ive been reading for a while now. Im a complete noob, but i successfully rooted my phone through the guides here, so ive done some extensive searching through the forum.
I really like my rooted infuse, but i totally envy my gf's gs2 . I wont be able to renew my contract until next year, so for now, i want to use my phone to its full potential. Opinions are welcomed,
I basically have a rooted stock phone running froyo 2.2.1. Read through a bunch of comments how froyo operated better than GB on the infuse, what are your thought on that?
Reason i ask is because i would like to run a custom rom, i really like MIUI, CM7, and ZEUS. I went through endless pages but im tied between them.
Which would you recommend. Im looking for performance, style and stability. I know its a matter of opinion, but im open to what many have to say.
Bit a confusion too, since i have a rooted 2.2.1 froyo will doing a custom rom automatically, upgrade me to gb or even maybe ics.
I also have seen in some threads where many mention that some of the roms come with a custom kernel already. Which ROMs would those be?
Im a noobie, but i did search the forum. You can lead me into the right direction that'd be great
Please and thank you

First off, welcome to the forum. When it becomes to roms it all depends on ur liking. We have a lot non official custtom GB roms. This is the beaty about android, flash until u find the one you like and that goes for modems and kernels. I would suggest to start flashing and keep reading. GL and I hope you the one for you.

Hey thanks for the welcomes and not bashing the noobie.
ima flash today, hopefully everything goes good.
so far after some more research came up with a little summary of steps,
Im running rooted infuse 4g, froyo 2.2.1
so far what i got from it is,
-install 3e recovery
-clockword mod
-nandroid back up
-insert preferred rom to sd
-boot into recovery via clockword
-clear data/cache w.e
-install zip
-reboot
and done, did i forget a step? enlighten me please.
Another thing Zeus requires me to have a GB Bootloader, how would i go about doing that?
please and thank you
any help ?

You're on the right track.
Get the roms and files downloaded to your pc and your phone.
might want to make a folder on your phone (ex:roms or flashhappy)
put all those files in there.
good to have entropy's latest kernel, superuser signed pak in doctorz roms too)
if you want, it may be simple also just to use sgskernel flasher from market, flash gtg infused kernel if you're on froyo and boot into cwm and go from there.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220090
i have a fail safe method that i use. learn to use heimdall and install a driver on one port on your pc - and save that one port for only heimdall.
use adam's uckj4 heimdall package. flash it once, flash again with boot loader checked (this will give you gb bl) then flash defuse kernel in second post and then flash your rom

good luck
Thank you very much, greatly appreciate it.

Its been available for I think over 2 months now. ATT just sucks. But yes, there is an official GB update but that update has been on the forums as an unofficial release (KK4) for a long while. I highly recommend the update and then I recommend immedaitely flashing a custom rom as the stock update isnt much of an improvement upon 2.2 Froyo.

Yep. Have it rooted with corn kernel and its smooth and fast enough for me.

The "official" upgrade is the KK4 build that leaked about 3 months ago. They're exactly the same. So if you've tried the stock KK4 or any KK4-based custom ROM then you've experienced it.
I'm running a KK4-based ROM. It's reasonably stable; however, it's much smoother and (for me) more stable if you flash the most recent Corn kernel (7.06) on top of it.

It's not that I didn't search (in fact I already discovered the thread you linked to), it's that we're looking for a one-click method rather than using odin. Are there any solutions for the problems we're having with Super One Click? Or perhaps another one-click solution that we're not familiar with?
There are two threads in this forum just below this one that provide all the info and files you need. Take a look. Worked for me ( and thanks to OPs for that). Flash gb, then a kernel that gives you root. I tried a few, like corn 7x best. Were not any one clicks out there for gb root a month ago, may not be yet.

Download the kernel file directly to your phone, use an app from market to flash it, no odin. Try SGS.

There are no one click methods that I know of. You really should learn to use Odin. Its not hard at all and opens alot of doors as to what you can do with your phones. I mean, its laid out step by step in that thread. Just follow instructions. I imagine we all can do that.
Thanks for all the info guys. I followed the instructions from the link below and everything went smoothly. Thanks again for all the input.

Ok I'm looking for somthing simple... And there are tons of UCLB3 leaked roms that have been modded and I just get so much lag on the lock screen - I have used the "Heimdall return to stock UCLB3" which does not have the lag. Tried another ROM via CWM that was "stock" with the daily driver kernel (lagged like hell). CWM to stock kernel with the ROM that was marked stock - still lagged.
I could not for the life of me get the Heimdall one click (above) to root with OneClick or the batch available. So I'm looking for somthing based off UCLB -leaked or the release with not much more then a root on it, And the correct Kernel whihc at this point I have no clue what it should be.
Currently I'm running:
FWV
2.3.6
BBV
I997UCLB3
Kernel
2.6.35.7-I997RUXKG3-CL366622
BN
GIBGERBREAD.UCLB3
I know this may seem easy, but to me this is getting fustrating. I have used so many roms... and the best one with the least lag was the return to stock - which I couldn't root (I have rooted many phones)
Any help would be great, or links/suggestions.
What ROMs did you try? Lag...wow...not on any the roms I've loaded....think your install has something to do with your lag....
Do you see the links in my signature if you're on your pc click those links....do some reading....
..I'm humble enough to say it could be my installs... but it's kinda hard to mess up a CWM flash - I'm clearing everything prior. The majority of the lag is on the unlock screen.
As for Roms.. Serendipity...Revolution... and a few others I'm not sure it it's a rom issue or a kernel issue.
I was just a little thrown off by the one click to factory (in your sig) gave me no lag, but I at least get lag on the unlock on all others.

Running your rom, Not too shabby - the animations are a little over the top... Do you have a suggestion for kernel?

The kernel its running is what I've found to run best with it. But you could try entropys kernel

Turn off animation will help...in the displays option...or put it for some amination
Just wondering wht DEV is missing the samsung email app... but you kept the AT&T family mapper... I need to find my email apk... or use k9 I guess.

Somehow the ATT family mapper apk was left in. Must of slipped passed my eyes. And I took out the email app to make a bit more room. As a lot of people just use Gmail so I kept the Gmail apk.

No king or anything....just an average joe..
Well then..."Joe Know's -Links-"
The DEV Rom is working nice, like I before all I can see is the missed bloat and for some of us who may use our devices for work and need to seem semi professional by responding from the correct email, email.apk. Other than that a toggle for the odd-ball animations would be nice... it may grow on me, the jury is out right now.
I'll run this for a while and possible fash over a differnt kernel or two and see what I come up with.
Thank you both for your time.

I suspect that the lockscreen lag you're seeing is related to underclocking when the phone is locked... Potentially with one of the Infusion kernels.
Consider running Entropy's kernel.
Or the stock kernel... But that locks you out of stuff like CWM and Voodoo Sound / Lagfix.
Need to root the "official" Samsung UCLB3 leak or the official AT&T Gingerbread release for the Infuse 4g, and still want to do it yourself on your phone? See this how-to that I just worked up.:
