check your GPS before you walk out the door Before you put the battery in, look at the first four numbers on the second line of the inside sticker- this will be your build number - 1010 for example would be oct. 2010 - Seems those that have 1008 build have problems with 3 button recovery.

I created a new user guide/sticky/faq - see if does you any good. Click here to check it out.

Cognition us built on froyo leaks with improvements
Assonace, perception and a couple others are built on i900 base froyo but optimized for the Captivate
Axura is based off of a Vibrant leak but is solid
I would suggest reading the threads in captivate development and finding what you feel comfortable with.
I am currently using assonance and axura, obviously not at the same time but going back and forth
To do a backup you will need to root but you do not need to root to flash roms

If you plan on flashing your phone with a custom rom. I would suggest getting insurance or make sure you only do it within the 30 day return policy. It's nice to have insurance incase something goes wrong and your brick it.
Also make sure you get a case. This is typically the best one to go with. http://www.otterbox.com/Samsung-Captivate-Commuter-Series-Case/SAM4-CAPVA,default,pd.html?dwvar_SAM4-CAPVA_color=20&start=2&cgid=samsung-captivate-cases

All I can say is to go through the different ROM threads, look at the screen shots, get a feel for the thread itself and check out the change logs. One of the most important things is to ensure you are happy and that the ROM you choose is one that will do you good. Keep in mind you can always flash back to stock and choose a different one.
PS. I am the dev of Axura and it is blazing fast, GPS works great and the animations are to die for.
Have fun on the Captivate.

Has anyone reported high battery usage with this ROM? I have this installed, with one of jt1134's "Built from EC10 source" kernels. So far it has been killing my battery, so much so that sometimes with it plugged in, the charger won't keep up and the battery still goes down. Could be that the battery needs to be calibrated, but I didn't seem to have any issues like that before.
Battery stats show Display is main user of power. I've been doing a lot of downloading, so I'm going to give it a couple of days and see how it goes.

Okay, I finally got my Mez flashed.
I used Odin to apply the 2.2 update from this thread and everything looked good. In fact, all my apps were there! yay.
Then I installed this SC 2.9.2, now my apps are all done and my app drawer has switched from the left/right scroll to the vertical scroll, which I hate.
Did I do something wrong, and more importantly, am I stuck in this state now?

You can use Odin to restore back to stock or flash the PnP rom to go back to Touchwiz. You won't get your apps back unless you backed them up first though. Also, you posted this in the Showcase forum. Hopefully you didn't flash their stuff to your phone or you may be in even more trouble.

Is the gb rom worth it??

im starting this thread so that everyone can discuss the GB rom that was released to us.
just so everyone knows if you didnt already, the GB rom we were given is not a real release by samsung and has many errors with it.
samfirmware devs made the GB rom compatible with our phone so its a dev build
as of right now we cant us CWM nor can we customize the rom at all
so in personal opinion maybe everyone should stick to froyo with all its mods and tweaks
also flashing the GB rom causes the GB bootloaders which are really i9000 bootloaders to stick even after flashing back to froyo :/ so maybe the noobs should stay away from the rom until the devs finish building it correctly
So if i flashed this am i screwed with the bootloaders even if i oden back to froyo?

You can get the bootloaders back once you flash KC1. Not the deodexed rooted version but the stock one that is with the md5 files.

That's scary to hear! Well I like gb but with the stuff I've been reading, so far to me its not worth dipping your feet in the deep end until a more solid GB is released. I'm always happy to test but the leak GB hasn't been worth it. Just my opinion.

Wow. That's pretty discouraging.
So let me get this straight...
If you flashed the leaked GB Rom at any time you will not be able to enjoy anything else coming out, say, via CWM Recovery?
There's a lot of confusion IMO about this release of GB. I know you'll say, "READ!" Because of how fragmented the information is, do you think it would be helpful to have a compilation of all the known pros and cons, risks and rewards, broken and working components in one stickied post? I would do it, but I'm not sure about everything that is working and not working (and my job could consume any time available to update the post at any moment). I'm using the deodexed version, but I'm walking as if on eggshells with my app usage so as to not break anything (I use it for half personal and half production... I know, illadvised, but could not resist GB).
EDIT: Sorry if there is such a post that I'm suggesting. I just have not seen one. I'm trying to piece together myself what works and what doesn't and the hows.
When I saw how you all were having problems at the very beginning I stayed away and just watched. I'm glad I did. I'm noob.
THANK YOU All for testing people. You saved some of us. Remember that.

Do we have a Odin flashable STOCK KB5 FW somewhere that contains the original boot.bin and sbl.bin files? that really would be the better FW to go with as it was the original that came with the device. Anyone wanna chime in on this theory?

Rooting Mesmerize already running 2.3.4?

I picked up a Mesmerize yesterday and was surprised to find it already running 2.3.4. I'm not sure if that's already a common thing on these, but coming from the Captivate world (still have it for personal use, the Mez is for work) it seemed very surprising.
Anyway, I definitely want to root this thing and get rid of the bloat; Is there a specific process for rooting these things with 2.3.4? I keep seeing stuff for Eclair and Froyo, but am unsure if GB uses the same Z4Root process or not.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Good luck.. there is NO development going on for this phone.

There doesn't appear to be any way for users to root GB on our phones at the moment. The only solution that I've found presented so far is to flash a pre-rooted ROM.

To the best of my knowledge, you basically have to flash in a rooted image - the older root exploits used apparently were finally patched in 2.3.

I've counted about 10 or so Gingerbread ROMs available for the Mesmerize, 2 AOSP and the rest TW-based. Roughly half have had some sort of activity within the month.

ya i'll have to disagree too, there are lots of TW and non-TW based roms out there, personally I use MIUI...honestly unless u have to root specifically for an application and don't want to use a custom rom rooting the stock rom is useless, since the mes has an unlocked bootloader you can just flash clockwork whenever you want and load whatever rom suits you.

[Q] Help with Gingerbread installation...

Okay I literally just got this phone yesterday and I see all this talk about Gingerbread and how great it is so I decided I want to try it. I know next to nothing about all the technicalities about this phone so I youtube'd how to do it and found this video that I plan to use to help me in the process. - watch?v=YuURgkUYn1A
So if I follow that process and use the files he uses, I should have Gingerbread and still have my connection to AT&T, GPS, and WiFi? Also, when AT&T finally does release it officially, will I be able to just go to Software Update on the menu and get the official AT&T Firmware and not have to worry about all this technical stuff again?

Try THIS link out, its got pretty much everything you want to know to get started(including vids). The only things that don't work on GB currently HDMI and on some of the roms, bluetooth. If you want to get the official OTA when it drops you will have to go back to stock, easiest way is to use THIS method. Also when GB does drop, Devs most likely will make their own roms based on the official GB.
Once your rooted and have recovery installed use THIS thread to find the ROM you want...
This is just a rough overview, so make sure you READ carefully and take your time, any question you have is usually answered in the appropriate thread.
Here is a link to the latest AT&T Gingerbread leak. Use Odin to flash it, and if you stick with the included stock kernel, everything works as it should. It looks very close to being ready for release. If you want it rooted, flash Entropy's kernel and then use CWM recovery and the Superuser zip you can find on here to install su. Then, flash the stock kernel again to keep everything working (video, bluetooth, etc.).:

So back on topic lol. Xia, Dman's CatyRom is one of the most recent GB roms (and plenty more), it's based off of the leaks from At&t. Once your ready, look into that!

To the OP, a good AOSP Gingerbread rom that I keep coming back to is Serendipity VII. I hope that MikeyMike will still come back to update that one when we get the official AT&T Gingerbread.
You can find that here.: http://serendipityinfuse.weebly.com/
I'm sure what I've done is no new news to the other devs

Couldn't help seriously laughing out loud to this comment. I consider myself to be pretty computer literate but still have to step away from the electronics everyonce in awhile for fear of judo chopping my own. My best advice to all noobs is... take your time and read. Its all right there in front of you. That is all.

Untouched UCLB3 Rooted

Ok I'm looking for somthing simple... And there are tons of UCLB3 leaked roms that have been modded and I just get so much lag on the lock screen - I have used the "Heimdall return to stock UCLB3" which does not have the lag. Tried another ROM via CWM that was "stock" with the daily driver kernel (lagged like hell). CWM to stock kernel with the ROM that was marked stock - still lagged.
I could not for the life of me get the Heimdall one click (above) to root with OneClick or the batch available. So I'm looking for somthing based off UCLB -leaked or the release with not much more then a root on it, And the correct Kernel whihc at this point I have no clue what it should be.
Currently I'm running:
FWV
2.3.6
BBV
I997UCLB3
Kernel
2.6.35.7-I997RUXKG3-CL366622
BN
GIBGERBREAD.UCLB3
I know this may seem easy, but to me this is getting fustrating. I have used so many roms... and the best one with the least lag was the return to stock - which I couldn't root (I have rooted many phones)
Any help would be great, or links/suggestions.
What ROMs did you try? Lag...wow...not on any the roms I've loaded....think your install has something to do with your lag....
Do you see the links in my signature if you're on your pc click those links....do some reading....
..I'm humble enough to say it could be my installs... but it's kinda hard to mess up a CWM flash - I'm clearing everything prior. The majority of the lag is on the unlock screen.
As for Roms.. Serendipity...Revolution... and a few others I'm not sure it it's a rom issue or a kernel issue.
I was just a little thrown off by the one click to factory (in your sig) gave me no lag, but I at least get lag on the unlock on all others.

Running your rom, Not too shabby - the animations are a little over the top... Do you have a suggestion for kernel?

Somehow the ATT family mapper apk was left in. Must of slipped passed my eyes. And I took out the email app to make a bit more room. As a lot of people just use Gmail so I kept the Gmail apk.

No king or anything....just an average joe..
Well then..."Joe Know's -Links-"
The DEV Rom is working nice, like I before all I can see is the missed bloat and for some of us who may use our devices for work and need to seem semi professional by responding from the correct email, email.apk. Other than that a toggle for the odd-ball animations would be nice... it may grow on me, the jury is out right now.
I'll run this for a while and possible fash over a differnt kernel or two and see what I come up with.
Thank you both for your time.

I suspect that the lockscreen lag you're seeing is related to underclocking when the phone is locked... Potentially with one of the Infusion kernels.
Consider running Entropy's kernel.
Or the stock kernel... But that locks you out of stuff like CWM and Voodoo Sound / Lagfix.
Need to root the "official" Samsung UCLB3 leak or the official AT&T Gingerbread release for the Infuse 4g, and still want to do it yourself on your phone? See this how-to that I just worked up.:
