gps bug? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dont know if anyone else has noticed this but has happened to me a couple of times now. If I start up an app that uses gps i.e speed test then when I quit out of the app the gps symbol remains in the notification bar flashing. I dont know how to get rid of it and have to reboot my phone. Any ideas guys?

Is it possible that your app is still running in the background even after you quit? Some apps do that.May explain why gps is still running.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App

Hi. Yeah thats a possibility and have been thinking it through. Take for instance speed test, it has no exit key so you have to quit out of it by either clicking back or home. Maybe that is where the bug lies and its nothing to do with my nexus.
One other question I have if you could help me out is about multitasking. Say if I hit the home button when an app is running it still runs in the background. How long does it do this for with out resorting to using an task killer or similar?
Cheers

This problem is not unique to the Nexus S. I actually haven't seen it on the NS (yet), but I see it routinely on my SGS i9000.
You should be able to easily get rid of it by just turning on and off the GPS with the Power Control Widget. No need to reboot. Turning on and off Location Services in Settings screens for the phone should also do it for you.

Thanks ill try turning it off using the location settings next time it happens. I did try with the widget but when i turned it back on it returned and was still there.

From my VERY limited experience, some apps stop running as soon as you press home screen (e.g. website/forum apps), some you need to specifically exit the app (if there is an exit option), and then there are others that stay running until you force stop it. Seems like it depends on the design (or mis-design) of the app.
You can view what apps are still currently running under Manage Apps. You can also manually stop those processes there if need be.
Hope this helps.

Thanks. I've tried looking under manage apps/running apps before but the task I think the gps bug is coming from is never listed in there. Infact not a great deal gets listed in the standard gingerbread applications settings. Games that I know are still running in the background dont get listed either for some reason.

LauncherPro not staying in memory

Hi all, just got a TB and rooted it yesterday. It was one of the first things I did when I got my phone, so I can't say that this wasn't an issue beforehand, but it seems like LauncherPro isn't staying in memory. Every now and then, when I press the home screen, it will ask me whether to use HTC Sense or LauncherPro. This will keep occuring at random, even after I've checked to use LauncherPro by default. Is anyone else having this problem? Know a quick fix?
Nobody else experiencing this?
there's an option in launcherpro's general settings 'keep in memory'. have you tried that yet? are you using some sort of app-killer (like advanced task manager or ES)? is launcherpro ignored in that?
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
Ah, sorry, should have clarified. Yes, I have the keep in memory already checked and I am not using any sort of app killer unless there is a stock app killer that I don't know about.
ok, then. in the phone's settings menu, go to applications/manage applications, find launcherpro. is it selected to launch by default?

No defaults set, which is why I assume the settings aren't sticking. Should I just force stop, clear data, uninstall, reinstall to see if that works? Or do you know a nifty way to set it to the default launcher.

you could do what I did, and use Titanium to remove HTC Sense from the phone. No point in having it if your going to use a different launcher.
Haven't checked yet, but is removing HTC Sense one of the safe removable apps? Were you having the same issues as I was or did you just remove it because you didn't use it?
i don't recommend uninstalling sense. i know, launcherpro is good and all, but it's still a third party software, and if something goes wrong, you're left with no launcher, and that kind of sucks... and no, i don't know any way to make it default (other that choosing from the list when it pops up). but reinstalling might help!

i am running das bamf and removed every bit of sense I could get my hands on immediatly as I like what they did with the rom but hate sense. I also installed launcher pro right away and deleted sense.
I have never had launcher pro end up at a point where I couldn't use it anyone. I did this for 2 months on my evo 4g, and will continue to do so.
Just stuck to the tried and true method of clearing data. LauncherPro seems to be sticking now. Thanks for all the replies!
Ah, spoke a little bit too soon. Doesn't seem to be sticking any longer. When I rooted, the process went very smoothly and all root apps that I have run with no problems.
I'm just wondering if there's any way that rooting may have affected LP since no other users seem to be having this problem.
Bumping this.

I have had this very same problem since day 1 with my T-Bolt, and it's driving me crazy. I have not rooted yet, so rooting has nothing to do with it... just so you know...
Like with your's, I get that nasty launcher selection popup randomly; and if I exit from any streaming app or music app, it pops up EVERYsingle time the HOME key is pressed.
It also happens with ADW in exactly the same way as LauncherPro, so I would bet it happens with any launcher that is not Sense.
What have I done to fix it?
1. I have uninstalled / re-installed LauncherPro (and ADW), with no luck.
2. Just in case it was a conflict of Google restoring what I had on my Incredible to my T-Bolt, I uninstalled every uninstallable app I could, and then waited over night for Google to do it's backup ( to create a blank backup), and then did a hard reset the next morning, with no luck.
3. In Settings>Privacy, I unchecked the "Back Up My Settings" box and discovered that a window pops up that says, "Are you sure you want to stop backing up your settings and application data AND ERASE ALL COPIES ON GOOGLE SERVERS?" When I saw that, I saw no need to do the overnight thing and did this repeatedly with hard resets - all this WITH NO LUCK.
4. As a last resort, I took my T-Bolt back to Best Buy (thinking that maybe something went wrong in the provisioning process during activation), and they reactivated my T-Bolt with a new SIM card. Once again, NO LUCK.
I don't know what the heck is going on with it. Maybe it's a rogue app that's conflicting with the T-Bolt. I don't know. What I do know is that there is no problem if I'm using Sense, but I don't like Sense and refuse to use it, so I'm stuck with that darned popup.
I thought that rooting and using a different ROM altogether would get rid of the problem. Have you tried flashing a different ROM?
We have got to find out what's causing this, or at least a good workaround.

Thanks for the reply. Puts my mind at ease knowing that I'm not the only one with the issue and also helps to know that you're experiencing this on an unrooted phone. I have not tried flashing any custom ROMs yet, so perhaps the people who have flashed a ROM can report back on whether LP is acting up on their phones.
I hope it's as simple as LP needing to be updated for TB.
Had this same problem myself... Download an app called HomeSmack from the market. It is free and allows you to switch between Sense and launcherpro easily. Have not had the issue since. Also I can easily switch back to my sense home screen and vice verse without a set-up every time.
Hope this helps

Yeah, I forgot to mention that neat little app - Homesmack. I like it. It's the only way I was able to actually get to LauncherPro from Sense. Without it, for me LauncherPro was simply a *download* that I could not access.
However, it did nothing to keep LauncherPro in memory. It does allow you to clear data from Sense and actually kill it momentarily; but once you get back into LauncherPro (or ADW), the problem simply repeats itself on my T-Bolt.

If I have time, I'm gonna root my T-Bolt this weekend. And then I will immediately flash a ROM - ANY ROM - to see if this works.
From what I'm gathering with regards to the T-Bolt... there are lots of bugs with this phone; however, not all T-Bolts share the same problems, and some are way more common than others. My T-Bolt is, for the most part, flawless; except for the launcher staying in memory. My wife has the headphone jack problem with hers... not everyone is experiencing that, but there are a batch of T-Bolts with faulty headphone jacks. Guess that's what we get for being early adopters. What the heck though, every other 4G phone that comes out will have flaws too. If people are expecting these phones to be fully *worked out*, they should wait and upgrade to 4G next year.
In the meantime, I've found that hitting the *back* key instead of the *home* key bypasses the launcher pop-up selector altogether. It can't be relied on completely because there are some apps you can't get out of without hitting the HOME key.
btw, my coworker has a tb and has this issue of the launcher pro constantly asking to be the default launcher. looks like if you hold the home button to switch between tasks, it clears the default launcher setting. try not using the hold home to multitask function to see if that stops this from happening.
I can verify this behaviour, and it 100% reproducible. It 'forgets' the default launcher with 2 actions:
- Pull down the status bar notification.
- Long press home to switch apps.
It doesn't happen otherwise. I use Wave Launcher, and it doesn't affect the default launcher.
This only started happening this weekend. I have to go through the apps I added recently.
I'm not rooted.
Using Zeam launcher.

[Q] Slow Home Behavior

Hello everyone!
Let me start off by saying that i'm actually using an unrooted, officially update nexus 5, updated to the latest 5.0.1
I have no problem whatsoever, battery really seem to have improved, but lately i've been getting a strange behavior
After a period of use (it goes from a couple of days to a whole week) the phone oddly slows down when i press the middle button, to return back to the homescreen.
For example, if I'm using the facebook app, and watch a couple of videos along with opening a few external links, when i press the home button, the whole home "loads" from start. I mean, i literally see nothing for a second, then it slowly loads widgets and icons. After it's been loaded, everything works flawlessly again, but if i open facebook again, use it for a while and press the home screen, it loads again.
Mind that i have no custom drawer (i tried Themer, it gives me the same error, it says "loading homescreen" when the problem appears) but the problem is still there with the stock homescreen. I tried force-closing the apps i used, thinking about a memory issue, but to no avail. I have to turn off and turn on the device, and everything works wonders again.
Is there any app that could help me with this issue? I'd like to understand why it's doing this and which app is slowing down my phone.

I am not Sure whether this is 100% sure, But have heard that there is a memory leak issue in lollipop. Which might be the reason of ur problem. And the oly way get enough memory is to restart. But again, I am not Sure whether the above information is correct though.

I've heard that too, but it's strange that it has appeared only now. I haven't had this kind of issue ever since i updated it.
The FB app is just real buggy. My personal theory is whatever that app does exposes the Lollipop memory leak.

Yep i know about that, the FB app is just horrible script-wise. Nevertheless, i've never had THIS problem. And even if i forceclose it, it doesn't solve the problem anyway.

Pressing the back button to exit an app sometimes takes me to other random apps

I've been having this problem for a long time, accross different devices and OS's.
The thing is that, sometimes, if I exit an app using the back button, instead of going to the homescreen I'm sent to other apps that had been previously open (but also closed). Pressing the back button again in whatever app it opened, would often take me to other apps until I finally get the homescreen.
This doesn't happen all the time, but it is quite often and annoying.
Any Idea what can this be about and how to fix it?
I'm using Nova Launcher (prime), which I suspect may have something to do with it.
Thanks in advance.

This happens to me, too, on occasion. It seems that it always happens if I launch an app directly from the app I'm currently using, and with certain apps, every once in a while, I get what you're getting. My solution has been to use the app ATK, or Advanced Task Killer. It's simple to use - just kill apps when you're done using them - and it also drastically lengthens my battery life. I'd highly recomend it.

How to keep Apps running in the Background?

Hi everyone, ever since the update, my apps stop running in the background when I close the app. Example: I don't get Whatsapp notifications anymore unless I open the app and keep it open. If I close all open apps, I will no longer receive any of the notifications for any of them.
I went into the battery settings disabled battery saver mode but that didn't do anything.
I would appreciate any help you could provide.

It's apparently one of the issues with the latest OTA update, where closing all running apps will terminate the background processes associated with the apps closed. Prior to the update and the Close All button being added to the recent apps list, I don't think it had this problem (I don't use Whatsapp, but my Skype and Discord notifications still come through even if I don't have them on my recent apps list).
This is a little frustrating. Noticed that I wasn't getting any notifications from tasker, pushover, textra, hangouts, inbox and etc.
Also noticed that pushover will not update unless it is off of wifi. All my other devices receive notifications on this wifi. IE nothing blocked.
I have had to open all the programs that I want to receive notifications from, open. Not the best work around.
J
I noticed that on occasion there will be small text under the new button that says "long press to set up apps that could run in the background" I do it but it doesn't seem to do anything, maybe free up some of the RAM but that's about it. I'm wondering if there is a bug and if it's supposed to show something.
Has anyone else tried the long press?
As of now all I do is keep a folder on the desktop labeled background apps. It helps big time when I accidentally tap the close all button. But my solution as of now is to keep things open that don't seem to work in the background. I've been experimenting with what works and it seems like in some recent app updates they begin to work without being open. I know for sure that facebook and now facebook messenger work without being open, as well as some google services. I have a memory clearer app that I use when I'm not using my phone so it clears whatever it can without killing the apps. But that's what I have as of now, trial and error to figure out what I need to leave open and what I can close. And I strongly recommend the folder, I have had many times where I accidentally close everything and forget what I had to leave open.
It's a bummer though, I just bought the phone and then this update came out. Kinda kills the excitement of getting a new awesome phone if I have to deal with this frustration :/ Other than that, it's definately a nice step up from a Samsung S4.

Misbehave as in not show anything after a long press?
Yes, nothing happens anytime I try it. After reboot, the first time I pull up the running apps is when I get the prompt. After the first long press after a reboot, the prompt is gone. If I have an app open and then I do the long press, I am taken back to the desktop, but no matter what I try, nothing seems to happen after the long press other than being taken back to the desktop if I had an app open.
I have the same issue, I thought it was a Internet connection issue (see my thread) but after digging deeper realised my background apps werent running after closing them and the long press option does nothing.
I have the same problem. Any solution?

I've just installed the new update and it looks like the issues I had with background apps closing when clearing all apps has been fixed. I've got no apps running in the foreground yet can see Whatsapp, Fitbit, etc still running and I'm receiving notifications for them.

Switching to another app/Going to home menu causes a certain app to restart.

Hi,
Had this issue for a little while since after upgrading to Android N on my S7.
Prior to that, I could go to the home menu while Kingdom Hearts Union X is active or switch to another app, resume and the KH app would resume where it was.
Now it seems to start the app very briefly, then shuts down and requires a fresh boot of the app again.
Other apps I regularly use don't seem to have this problem, and I haven't seen any others complain about this issue for KH in particular, but I don't know what could be the cause on my phone?
I did try Greenify and S7 has some inbuilt thing to clear RAM and etc., but the same still seems to happen.
Anyone have any suggestions?
P.S. Also out of interest, I've read keeping all apps open on the multi-app screen is better practice than manually closing them? Is this true? And would they use internet data/resources in this state?
Thanks
