[WIP] HDMI Development - EVO 4G Android Development

Hi All,
I am planning on making an app that unlocks the HDMI capabilities of the Evo. However with limited documentation and secretive programmer's manual for the HDMI chip on the Evo, this is almost impossible.
I tired searching for the register reference or programmer's giude for the SiI9024A HDMI chip but found nothing on the web (they only released it to HTC and other manufacturers). If anybody has these documents and would like to see the Evo with full HDMI, please private message/email me these docs or a link to them.
I will use this thread to update on project's progress, link demos and what not.

This is something I've been wanting to see for a while. I don't have any documentation to offer, but once you get something going, let me know if you need any help testing.

Or you could just wait for cm7; talk of the town is that they may have that feature.

Thanks rrr1986, but these docs are not what I need to develop for the chip. What I need may require me to sign an NDA with SI, which I am willing to do if there are no fees.

Thats very much like what i want to create.

that app for the droid x is a step forward, but by no means ideal lol. The screen on the phone stays in the app and doesn't reflect what the phone and hdmi output is doing?
Sounds like a LOT of hit or miss and frustration for those users lol. Picking the right app/shortcut sounds bad enough let alone typing something

This is because the developer chose to create an app instead of a service.

Here's the action I'm looking for out of an HDMI out utility:
http://androidspin.com/2011/01/06/c...ptima-2x-with-tegra2-chipset-and-gingerbread/
Enjoy!

Hoping for this in CM7, but I'm not holding my breath. Have a pico projector that works with HDMI out in sense roms, but the audio comes out of the speakerphone..! Grr.. And only works in gallery movie player, and maybe youtube. That's it.
:-/

let the people of other forums know about this thread. androidcentral and many other sites. maybe someone throw a key information about the hdmi of the evo

This would be great if you could get full mirroring. Do any of the new htc phones coming out have the same hdmi chip? Maybe you could steal the mirroring drivers from it haha

I don't know if this helps as I have written about it before in another thread but didn't get much results. In the RUU_101107T105508(which boots and will function...but without bootloader screen..you have to remember which key functions make it go into what you are looking for) and the next one RUU_Speedy_Sprint_WWE_1-2.17.651.1_Radio_1.07.00.1129_NV_SPCS_1.52_1103_release_160079_signed and RUU_Supersonic_1.17.651.1(it is the eng-build that you can get when you use the 3 step Simple Root method.....it has HTC utilities that allows you to either select HDMI mirroring or presentation mode. However, the toggle will only let you select presentation mode. If someone knows how to change the default from "false" or to "allow" I am pretty sure it would allow HDMI output. It is a matter of going through all of the files to find the toggle switch to allow it to work. It states it is only for Supersonic and it shows pictures from the Vancouver Google Convference.....so....all of you in the know.....maybe this will help....It has a whole bunch of HTC utilities that only came with the first EVO given out at the Google conference. You can check all types of things.....WiMax included....the same settings that CM is using to make WiMax work now....I just don't think it has/was a top priority and might be an easy fix.....

Skype 2 video available

The latest Skype update for Android is available to everyone, but it only enables video chat on four specific handsets. Fortunately, impatient modders have gone some way to correcting this profound injustice, by creating APKs that activate video calling on other handsets too. So far we've heard of successful ports on the Samsung Galaxy S II and the HTC Sensation, Thunderbolt and EVO 4G. If you've got some other handset with Android 2.3, a little experimentation with the APK might also be worth your while. However, we just tried it on an Xperia Arc and didn't get very far: the app ran, but efforts to communicate with an Xperia Neo resulted in one-way video, a locked landscape mode and plenty of awkwardness. Let us know if you fare better -- you'll find a Thunderbolt-specific download at the DroidLife source link, and a more general APK at TechPetals.
http://blogs.skype.com/en/2011/06/smile_skype_for_android_with_v.html
Figured I would drop this in here if anyone has some know how and wants to look into it to see if there is anyway for us to have this on our phone. Doubt it though considering it requires 2.3 which seems to be the standard for google video chat and stuff, but hey, its worth a shot!!!
Found some more info. Tested and still didn't work but apparently on our device but confirmed on the SGS2. Here is the link for the guy who got it working.

man, so much we can't do without gb. This phone should have launched with it.

Yeah, one of Google's big thing at IO was that they wanted to eliminate the fragmentation, yet I haven't seen anything to indicate they're taking steps to achieve this.
Unfortunately it's one big advantage Apple has... they take a hard line position that the carrier doesn't touch the OS software, nor prevent the deployment of the updates. Not sure why Google is such a wuss when it comes to holding the carriers accountable for the timely delivery of their updates. AT&T says it's because they have to ensure a quality user experience, but comon, what AT&T customer actually believes that crap? LOL

hey, this is gonna sound like a really dumb question and way off topic but can you tell me how your notified when someone posts. I personally have to try and remember the threads I participated in and see if someone replied. This seems very redundant but I don't see a better way to be notified. Thanks in advance
Is anyone's phone dying quickly after installing this. I even tried signing out and closing the app but my phone legit drains 10% an hour on standby. So I deleted the app. Now my wifi is turning on and off and can't keep a constant connection. Help?

The only true advantage that Apple has over Android is that they only more or less support one device. Android is spread amongst how many different devices? It's easy to put out lackluster updates to a single device, but putting out updates to 20+ different devices isn't so easy.
how are you guys even getting it to install? is it actually working?
yes please, can any one confirm that the video call on Skype is working on the infuse?
regards
no it is not working. installing the custom apk does give you the video call option, but if you press it, it goes into landscape to prepare for video call and then it does nothing. gingerbread is needed since it uses the frontfacing camera api.

Yes, my phone's battery started draining in about two hours after installing Skype, so I uninstalled and things are better again now.
Even if Skype supports video on the Infuse, I don't think I will start using it unless they address the battery usage.

HTC HML ADAPTER on MyTouch 4G Slide

I have an official HTC HML Adapter but the first TV I used with HDMI did not work.
It is an old Sanyo with only 1 HDMI Port.
The adapter says HTC EVO 3D and Sensation
The TV out on the same TV works instantly with the Zune RCA (Red-Yellow-White) adapter.
I will try a 27" Asus monitor with 2 HDMI inputs later.
Has anyone had success with their MT4GS and this adapter?
EDIT: No Good with Asus Monitor on either HDMI port.
I have a CECHA01 (750GB) PS3 that was updated to 3.60 with my knowledge. (I'll keep that anger away from this thread)
I will test the DLNA Media Server functionality of the PS3 if someone has not done so?
This is bad news that there is no MHL funcionality. NOT the same as Sensataion! I will have to sell this to one of my friends with Sensation that are running their fancy Custom ROMs while I sit and rot on Stock for the time! Perhaps I have a bad unit right out of the box? It's possible, but I doubt it?

Quoted for truth.
I believe we've already confirmed that the MT4GS, out of the box at least, does not support MHL. can't remember the thread where it was being discussed.
it would seem that it could be possible if you take into account the fact that the innards are the same as the Sensation and E3D, but we might have to dig to get it going. also, apparently some of the early demos of the MT4GS showed off MHL alongside the Sensation which leads me to believe we just need some small tweaks to get it working on the retail units.

This leads me to believe we need to donate to some devs to get this device in their hands. I am sick of checking the development thread to see if a there is a ROM available.
Every other device I have had, I always checked to see what was new for flashing. I think the that the timing of the Sensation and MT4GS may be one of the causes of the lack of development
What can you do....just wait and see. I have chose to wait vs getting the Sensation, which has not been easy as I have unlocked and flashed everyone in my area who has bought one, while I choose the joystick over screen res?
How much longer will this painful wait be?
Sorry for the rant.
Stock rom does not do TV out at all if you remove the TVOut apk.
Thus it follows that MHL will not work unless the correct MHL apk is present.
I would imagine the next course of action is to determine if the sensation rom contains such an apk while the mytouch does not.
Anyone have a sensation they can look at for us?

I think we're moving along nicely... less than a month since the device's official release and we have perm root & s-off already. rom development will take time. if you're aching for some changes, just head over to the UOT kitchen and have some fun there.

Well, since you are off the hook for the moment:
Does it require specific hardware to operate, or is it just code that matters?
I understand it's not supposed to matter for the connection itself - so using the MicroUSB would work on any device that had it - but is there any hardware that needs to be present within the device itself to make it work?
I think that's what I got from this before - but didn't verify anything or look into it too deeply because of the tv-out over 3.5mm and just wrote it off.
If it does require hardware support to function in some context, maybe we can see if we actually have that hardware in the device before you spend money again.
Or do you not care and just wanna buy and try? Fine either way - just curious?
Well, the seller stated its compatible for a reason, but might be an error on his side. Also im back at my money, so ill look into this more thoroughly, looking at local stores converters and their compatibility.
But yes, if someone could verify hw specification with htc or tmo that would save time.and yes it needs hw imho.

http://ifixsmartphone.com/iphone_repair/MyTouch_4G_Slide_teardown.html
That links to the only known public teardown of this device - it's showing how to replace part of the screen, but you have to take the whole device apart to get to that and pictures were taken at each step.
If we can determine that there is specific hardware needed and what it is, so far this is our best chance to see if it's physically there. (possibly?)
If any other public teardowns are found, definitely post here - and if anyone knows what hardware MHL requires the device to have please post it here so we can look into this.
Don't have the time to look too deep into this tonight, but i'll definitely post anything relevant I can find towards determining whether it's possible or not.
----
I just might buy that teardown found here:
http://www.abiresearch.com/research/1009325-HTC+MYTOUCH-4G-SLIDE+phone+teardown
...that _atlien_ posted about here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17482235&postcount=2
I've gone to that page probably once every 2 or 3 weeks since it was posted and thought about buying it, maybe next time but every time I get closer to going for it.
----
That aside though, any public resources along these lines anyone has found would be appreciated. I think the idea that it needs hardware makes sense or any device could just do it with the right code - but not sure and could be wrong. We need a conclusive determination on this.
well, ive found a local store with mhl stuff, i think these are pretty much the same converters. Going to give it a spin with the Sensation based rom and stock.

ok. i think MHL is a not going to work, looking and digging for it.
The chip is called 'sii9234' that sensation and shooter (evo3d) seems to have by default in the kernel. Looking for this chip on google related to our device I see nothing relevant...
there would be no sane reason to not include the driver if the chip is on board, that would be like worsening the market position of it. So i wont buy this cable, till someone can confirm that the sii9234 mhl chip is on the board.

Wifi Display / AirPlay / Android Transporter

Hi community,
based on ICS we developed "Android-Transporter" which is similar to WiFi
Display or Air Play. It allows you to transfer your display to another
device. For a demonstration see http://esrlabs.com/android-transporter.
To implement this efficiently we had to hack the platform, to allow us to
grab the screen content in the surface-flinger. The image is then encoded
with the standard media-encoder which uses the hardware acceleration of
your mobile. The result is streamed with rtsp to another device (the demo
shows another mobile, but this could also be a tv or media-center).
Right now this is just a hack, but we plan to continue our work on
this. The next steps on our road-map are:
- Dual screen support with accompanying SDK.
- WiFi Direct support.
- We plan to open-source our patches for the Android platform.
For the last point we thought of the brilliant cm9. Would this be of
interest for the cyanogenmod community? If you are willing to give this a
try, we would love to contribute to cm9.
Regards,
Christian Köstlin

Thanks for your interest. If you have two Nexus-S at hand I could provide you with an ICS-4.0.3-based images.
Both devices should already be in the same WiFi-network, as we do not
have WiFi-direct for the Nexus-S (for the demo I just created a
portable WiFi-hotspot with one of the devices). Additionally you need
two small apks (one one the client, one on the server, which I would also provide) to initiate the video-transport between the two devices. After a NFC-bump the connection should be established and the display mirrored from one
device to the other.
As this is not yet a final release, I would like to give you the links to the images and the apks by private message.

As the protocol is based on rtsp/rtp, our first version (altough with a
higher latency) was between one device and gstreamer or vlc on a
desktop pc. Right now the setup is a little bit complicated, but if
you have a Nexus-S at hand and are willing to experiment a little bit,
I could provide a link to a ICS-4.0.3-based system-image for you.
As the software is still in experimental stage I would prefer to give you the link only in a private message.

Actually NFC is not essential to the screen-transfer. It just makes the setup easier. Right now we just have the Nexus-S images, but we are also working on a Galaxy Nexus-port.
As a target we also did play with a Xoom (which worked out-of-the-box, but with a bad latency).
We would love to get some coverage on the portal, but we do not know what would be interesting for you guys. Also we would like to show you the hack on your own devices.

Hi conantroutman, your comment got us to think about a possible article for the portal. We really would like to show the stuff we did with Android Transporter. Possible content for an article could be:
Changes to the platform that we had to do.
Problems we still have and discussion with the community how to solve them (e.g. a big part of the latency is due to omx in the nexus-s)
Outlook to adaptions to the theme: "standard based transfer of screen content
Currently we are also preparing an audio track for the youtube video, to explain a little more about whats going on.
We really would like to raise the interest in this, so that we could get some chance and perhaps even help to integrate the patch into one of the bigger roms (like cm9).
Perhaps you could help us with the article to streamline it to the needs and interest of the xda-developers community.
hoping to hear from you!

This. Is. Amazeballs.
Christian,
I, as an owner of a Galaxy Nexus, would love to able to test this out for you guys. If there is ever a port for the GN or need some guinea pig to try out the software and provide feedback consider me your guy!
I have a question for you. When this is released, will it be open sourced? I ask because if you can stream the display, this could similarly be used to transfer large files as well. This functionality does not exist on many wi-fi direct devices.
Again, this. is. kickass.

Will this also mirror the Android's launcher/browser/etc. too?
I've been looking all over and found nothing that can do this.
EDIT: After seeing the video, I jizzed my pants. It's like you read my mind and figured out exactly what I wanted.

yes ... it can mirror everything that the device shows. even when the device uses the hardware-decoder e.g. for playing a movie (as shown in the demo video).
Count me in for testing.
I'm simply amazed by the demo video. Very nice NFC touch.

You need to have 2 nexus s devices since you need to run a modified system.
Also Christian,
Will this be available this year? And will it connect to computers too?

Skyrocket Appreciation

This phone is awesome. I have yet to see any posts showing interest in their phone, beyond changing ROMs like its a disease.
I recently found out I can use 'Six-Axis controller' to connect a ps3 controller to my phone and effectively have a portable n64 console with me. All I need to do now is find a Conker's Bad Fur Day or Banjo-Kazooie ROM.
I recently found out about LCD density changing and messed around with it a lot. 180 makes our Skyrocket look sexy. (But now I'm experiencing market compatibility issues so I need to look more into it).
I like organization, so SD-Maid was a nice find and I'm going to learn Titanium Backup to increase my battery life. Just need to find a freeze list.
I found the site My ColorScreen so theming will be a task soon undertaken, as soon as the necessities are figured out.
So come on, share some cool things about your phone. Whether it's a cool Llama task you made, new homescreen setup, an app you think people should know about, a ROM you like (AOKP + CM9, thank you guys), or an important tip you should know (I didn't know Titanium Backup could restore my folder settings in Nova Launcher, that would have saved time).
Be a little positive guys.
Why is it that an incorrect, naive post about an OTA update for Skyrocket can get two pages instantly full of people *****ing about how useless the thread is (then don't reply to it smartass).
While a thread with the capacity to help people find some cool things about their phone gets nothing.
I hear the app "LCD Density Modder Pro" can fix the market compatibility issues. It's a paid app though.
Any more info on the six-axis controller and how to use the phone as a "portable n64"? That sounds interesting!
Edit: Ah, a little bit of googling answered my question about that six-axis controller.. didn't realize it was an app. Makes sense now. Which N64 emulator do you use?
I don't root my phone but I love it to death! I also agree that negative posts get more responses than US news media stories.
That being said I love that flipboard app and I'm going to be buying a new Samsung LED TV. I've heard that we can turn our phones into remote controls for the actual TV, if not yet its on the horizon.
I also use mine for web browsing mostly and I'm looking for a cool app like MATLAB based or something that has Physics and Calculus formulas all over. I hope this thread gets going. Mad thanks to the OP. This is the first thanks I've used.

I currently have a Samsung TV, and it's true that we can use our phone as a remote control, as long as your TV has wifi and you connect your phone to the same network. You'll just need the app conveniently named "Samsung Remote" lol. It's free in the market. Works for their blu-ray players too I think.

Mupen64AE, pulled for free from the developers site here. You just run sixaxis and start the emulator, then map the buttons (less than 10 seconds) and you're good to go. Emulators were always a cool idea to me but they didn't translate well for certain games, but honestly with the analog sticks and actual triggers its a perfect experience.

Thank you! I hope it does too!

I was considering it, but I found a modded play store apk in our themes and apps section. It seems to be working so far. I've also heard of other ROMs that have 'per app dpi'. Which would be awesome.

Thank you! Now I have a mini project for tomorrow. I've never frozen an app before but I assume it's relatively straightforward.
You bumped your own thread because no one else would. You could have at least contributed the process of how to use the ps3 controller with the phone.

[Q] Extra S2 skyrocket. Uses?

I upgraded to the S3 a month or so back so I have a 4 month old S2 that I'm looking for uses for. I have nobody to give it to and don't really need/want to sell it yet, so I've been researching non phone uses for it. Maybe a streaming cam for home security, a media pc (with external storage of course), something along those lines. Any ideas?
One use: you can use it to test out roms and kernels without fear of damaging your only phone. I'm sure it'd help a dev out if they knew that their rom caused issues, and you have a phone to fall back on.
I'd be doing the same but AT&T bought my SR.
Stock ICS on my S3
Make a cell-bot!! ... I'm into robot things.. so it interests me. Then you could use the cell-bot for the home security. (recording.. and put a tazer on it) or make one of these YouTube Link but with the skyrocket interfaced somehow..
I would do it.. but just don't have the time.. I have a first gen Nao robot (from my university) that I code on. Mainly python or C++. Takes too much time lol
Sly's use is a good one too.. could always use people that aren't afraid to load up a fresh build and report non-bias info.
I assume that it will no longer have a sim card so, wifi only. I'm a little strange, I use my SR for about everything but a phone. I do use mine as somewhat of a HTPC at home. I have it on the nightstand connected to tv which has a small surround sound system. From there I use it for: clock, online streaming (hulu+, netflix, youtube, tedtv...etc.) music and movie streaming from main HTPC, downloading music and movies (faster than my home pc on same wifi). I also use Splashtop which controls main HTPC giving me all the functions of my computer.(tv tuner card and recordings web browsing, documents, printer) remotely with video and sound, So simple explaination: It's my Tv, stereo, clock, htpc for my bedroom. Although I have an MK802 that works pretty well, I'm getting the MK802 iii in a few weeks which will do all of this and be remotely controlled from my phone. Oh yeah I use it as a pc remote control also. These are just the home uses.
But, you could also donate it to a good charity. The "davietr" charity foundation. LOL!
Attach it to a rocket and make it skyrocket!

I'd LOVE to make some kind of surveillance bot (think rover, tank bot thing) but although I'm in a very experenced in building eletronic things my coding skills are lacking.

Give it to Adam Outler so he can figure out an Unbrickable Mod for this phone. It would serve the community in a huge way.

This crossed my mind as well, I was going to make a quad-rotor using the s2 as the I/O controller. It has the perfect setup, all the sensors minus a ground proxsinity sensor. Wiring it all up is no problem, the problem lays in my lack or programming knowledge.
I knew I had seen that one in the video somewhere... but couldn't understand what he was saying
http://www.brookstone.com/rover-remote-control-spy-tank-for-ipad
If I had my hands on that one I would tear it apart and put an Arduino in it (personal preference for building bots -- and simple to use)
Wish I knew more about interfacing a phone with this type of hardware application.
I know the cell-bots website has *some* info..

Ive read up on Arduino some time back, looks like lots of people were thinking along the same lines as I. First thing i'd do with that thing is replace the cam with a better one, maybe a servo to enable some movement of the cam, also pull out those motors and put in some brush less higher torque ones. I'd be willing to buy one of those bots (pending some research) and modding it with the s2 as an on-board interface if anybody has any knowledge of programming. I think it would be a good project for the community.
I need a new SR.....digitizer broke on mines... haha

I do have mine as my backtrack Linux desktop computer.
And as my netflix viewer.
This was with my CM9 setup, since moving to CM10 a couple of weeks ago, haven't tried any of that yet.
