Hey there XDA.
i'm in the IT department for a big-time company, and we (obviously) have specific security parameters on our network.
Recently, with all of the talk about android tablets because of CES and other factors (i personally own a Viewsonic G-Tablet running VEGAn 5.1b) the team and i have come to wonder if we would be able to put an android tablet onto the domain the same way we would a regular old Windows PC/Laptop or a Blackberry phone onto the exchange server.
We use Citrix clients/servers as well as pc/laptops, and so far, as i've been scouring the market, i've been able to find a Citrix app, and a Wyse terminal app, which could be used to open VPN sessions on the server, as well as the obvious app which allows an android device to be connected completely with Microsoft Exchange Server. So, XDA, i figured, where else would i go but here, to the most well versed android development website on the interwebs, to ask if you guys might know of anything at all, or if something could be done.
Any ideas?

This looks good: Splash-ID. Has a desktop client as well. I don't use it so I can't say much else about it.
I personally use B-Folders which is a Free app and works great for me.
Security
I am a little suspicious about installing and using certain apps. Many state that they have full access to the phone and internet, meaning they can send all of my personal information elsewhere...and in an e-wallet application, that can be devastating. A goldmine for ID theft criminals... learn some code, and write an e-wallet application. Make it free and watch the information roll right in!
Can b-wallet be trusted? They are based in Spain and Bulgaria. Not much information out there about them.
Splash ID looks great and legit, but $30 is a ridiculous price for this software. $10 maybe for both desktop and phone.
Like the other guy said, B-folders does the exact same thing Splash ID does, and it's free, they are asking way too much money for that app

Open source, no internet access (internet access not requested in the manifest upon install) & has an open source desktop counterpart too!

I was a long time eWallet user and contacted them recently because they don't have Android or WebOS clients. They said that they have no plans to create anything at this time for other platforms.
Seems like they are not doing well these days. I looked at Splash ID and while it seems okay, they way they license desktop software is insane and I hear that databases are not compatible with other version of their software so if you get a new phone you'd be out of luck.
I am now using CallPod's Keeper. It is very simplistic which I hate but it works with most major phones and desktops (PC & Mac, etc) I run it on my iPhone and Android.
Having used eWallet for a long time, on all platforms (pc, iphone, winmo), I hope they make ewallet for android soon.
Otherwise I have to find a new password program as well...

Otherwise I recommend lastpass(.com). Not ecsactly the same as ewallet, but really good. However, it requires internet access...
I am actually hoping for SPB Wallet to made for Android. SPB did announce Mobile Shell for Android so I am hoping they are gonna port more of their software library over as well.
I've been hassling Illium for ages about this, they don't seem interested in the slightest
**EDIT** Hang on, Splash actually charge you more if you buy the desktop and phone client together than if you buy them seperate! How does that work!?!?!

It is OPEN SOURCE and it does not require internet connection.
And it has desktop app as well, which is good.
For this kind of app which we use to store "sensitive information", I cant easily trust any closed source app.
That's why I am heading to KeePass when I got my Android device (ordered).

Well your wish was partially granted eWallet Viewer.
You can sync with your windows PC and view on your Android, but you cannot add or edit.
awesome, at last..
Now hopefully they do a full version also.. I see a lot of WM6.x users switching to Android at the moment...

Viewer is good enough for me. It sync's to the desktop too (I've even paid for an upgrade to v7 so this works )
I would like to introduce keywords like AES or encryption on this post. I have been looking on and off for days for an encryption package for Android and pretty much drew a blank, with a couple of notable exceptions. It was only through trying to find out more information about JointLogic (makers of B-Folders) that I stumbled upon this very useful discussion. I also deeply distrust the anonymity of these vendors. I am deeply sorry if I offend them, but these days we are used to look a gift horse in the mouth. JointLogic is trying to make us suspicious of Google with backdoors in their engine, yet we are supposed to trust an anonymous company in who knows where?
I read somewhere that an android version of Ascendo Data Vault could be out sometime soon. Anyone know if there is any truth to that?

I am still new to using the android system and just bought the viewsonic g tab and I must say that this is a real good toy and has some oportunity for future developement. Looking at the replacement ROMs they all seem like all you get is a phone instead of a true replacement operating system that acts like a computer.
Is there anyone working on something like windows 7 for these or even anything close?

That is the android operating system. The release of honeycomb will give you a more tablet look but what is it you want to do that you cant with this OS?
I have a convertible Windows 7 Tablet PC. Most days it sits at home, even more so since I got my G-Tab. Why? Because it is not designed to be used with a touch interface, and doing things that SHOULD be simple like rotation can become a big issue. Plus if you want one that runs all day, you are going to add an extended battery with all sorts of extra weight to go with it.
FWIW, Windows won't run on an ARM chip or Tegra, so Windows 7 won't be ported to the G-Tab. You might (?) be able to get Ubuntu or another Linux running if you want the desktop experience, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
As has already been pointed out in the thread, there is very little that you could do in Windows that you can't do in Android - and most of those things are because of the physical limitations of the device, not the OS.

Plus ive already invested in skinomi and a cool android decal.

Thanks for the FAX trick! I love my g, my laptop blue screened and crashed, couldn't have happened at a better time.

I thought allot about this last night after playing with the GTAB and downloading a few free aps. I'm not knocking the android system maybe just the way it's current UI seems geared more to people used to smart phones. Maybe that's the whole idea and I'm not getting it as I'm too used to using a computer and don't use a smart phone. Hopefully Honeycomb will make it be more of a tab and the update will be made available to current GTABs like mine.
I still think the thing is great for surfing the web while waiting for my coffee to brew in the morning and I found a app to let me open office documents to I should be able to use it for some of my work files.
Honeycomb may give you less of a phone experience. You could also install the GAdam rom for more of a tablet feel
I would love a bi modal interface. One interface that works as a tablet when the machine is in tablet mode and another where it goes into netbook mode when it's plugged into a dock. This would definitely make the machine more useful for me. I could do some remote development on it (via ssh) or download a pdf document for reading on the couch or something.
I was really hoping for something like meego to take off and perhaps offer something like this. Oh well....
I just read that SAP is working on a BI for android . What would be great now if a usable VPN client and Lotus notes could be used.
windows 7 is been ported to tegra 2 says CEO of microsoft(i read somewhere). But it will be a long time before all the drivers are up and running.
Hmmmmm........now that they are with a phone company maybe we'll see something happen with tab
development for dual usability, work and personal use?

yes, M$ is back in the business of porting their primary OS to other CPU archs, but it'll likely die again as noone will want to hobble their devices with a windows version.
In any event, you realize that you won't be able to run the vast majority of windows sw right? (i.e. it'd be essentially useless unless you actually like windows look & feel...) It's ALL been compiled for x86 arch, and I find it unlikely that ARM version of many apps would ever be available unless something highly unlikely happened and windows for ARM actually got off the ground...

I find the gtab is much more than a toy. With my gtab I can access my company's network via VPN. My gtab can RDP to Windows servers at work. I can also access NTFS file shares on these work computers with my gtab. Access to my work LOTUS notes email and calendars is through IMAIL via the gtab and Dolphin HD browser. Any Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, or PowerPoint presentations I have for work can be read, modified, or created on my gtab. Reading PDF files is a snap on the gtab.
Whenever it is time to read the latest Preston / Child's or Dean Koontz novel I download it from Barnes and Noble and read it on my gtab. I can access my home network and stream media files from my NAS to my gtab. My gtab can access the Internet over wifi at home, work, restaurants, stores, anywhere there is a wifi hotspot. This includes my rooted myTouch 3g's ad hockey wifi hotspot. My gtab can play several audio and video formats. If I am in the mood for radio or TV I can stream full episodes or albums from Internet TV or Internet radio sources to my gtab.
My gtab has system tools that can be used to update its operating system kernels and ROMs, access and manipulate filesystems, and backup applications and data. I have utilities to monitor and benchmark the processes that run on my gtab. I am able to connect to my personal Windows 7 laptop or myTouch 3g phone via Bluetooth connection and access and manipulate their files and directories from my gtab.
I use my gtab as a remote control for my XBMC application on my Windows HTPC. My gtab can use the GPS on my phone to create a larger screened GPS. Sometimes I play Angry Birds on my gtab.
My personal calendars and task lists are kept current and meaningful with several of the calendaring and task apps available for the gtab. Current weather and news is but a click away on my gtab. Banking, credit card, and financial apps on my gtab let me monitor my finances. Shopping apps on my gtab allow me to peruse online catalogs and order merchandise from the likes of Target, Kroger, Best Buy, Amazon, and Newegg. I am able to access insurance records and medical records for my family / pets with apps on my gtab.
These are a few of the little things that I do with my gtab. I find the gtab to be quite versatile and consider it to be a quite powerful little ( size wise ) computer powered by the Android 2.2 Froyo OS. My gtab seems quite stable and I am able to address any issues that arise with the aforementioned system utilities.
Thanks to the incredible support that the gtab gets from the XDA developers and the Android app development community I believe the gtab has matured beyond toy status and has arrived as a useful tool equal to the challenges of everyday life.

I am new to BeagleBoard and Android Development. Recently I had someone literally drop a Android Dev project into my lap. Sweet! He gave me a BeagleBoard and three main objectives. 1. Get android working on BeagleBoard. (completed) 2. VNC Server running without being "rooted" or needing ADB. 3. Ethernet over USB. (usbnet may work just fine) After extensive research I found no usable open source vnc server for Android. (I'm sure I may have missed something with Google or here on the XDA-dev forums. I'm thinking of porting a open sourced java based VNC Server over to Android and am needing suggestion and tips. My main questions is this, must a VNC server require root access to Android or is there a way around this. My client was pretty specific on this requirement. I am using TI-Android-Gingerbread-devkit on a BeagleBoard XM Rev B. the rom is on a 2gb sd card (would a 4gb be better as I may have to purchase that an invoice my client. Something I'd rather not do) So to reiterate, what would be the best way to get a VNC Server running on Gingerbread without the need for ADB or root accress? Thanks for all the great people here and thank you XDA Developers for having such a great site (also thanks for the HTC Inspire tuts that I'll need once I get my grubby hands on it after this project is over )

I will preface this by an apology if I am putting this in the incorrect place, or this is a topic that is well covered; but I so far have not been able to get solid information on this.
From what I understand, ICS is going to include and/or support Cisco AnyConnect . However, that does not help the many users out there still using legacy Cisco VPN solution at our workplaces.
Specifically AnyConnect (at least on android, the only flavor I have had experience with) does not support Group Authentication, and neither do the default VPN clients included on Android.
So far I have had success on my Samsung Epic 4G running Froyo using VPNC to connect to my corporate network, but now I am shopping for a tablet. Likewise I have friends at work who want an android tablet but since they can't easily connect to work to do very basic things, they haven't bought.
I don't want to need root just to get a proper VPN connection up and running. For one thing that leaves me dependent upon a tun.ko being available for the tablet, not to mention just getting root in the first place isn't always easy as it was for the Kindle Fire or my Epic. And I certainly am not going to recommend that for my less technical friends.
So all that exposition out of the way, it comes down to this simple question - will ICS have a built in client that will support IPSEC group authentication , or will such client be available to install without root and needing to install modules?
Thanks for your patience if this is covered elsewhere, but most everything I have found in searches here (and elsewhere) for is based on AnyConnect and my company's VPN doesn't support that, and they aren't going to change that anytime soon.

I am looking for this information as well. I certainly wish Google and Cisco could sit down and get this figured out. Apple did and the iPads at work can VPN in but not my Transformer Prime. I knew this before I purchased it, but went ahead with it hoping this would be added/fixed with ICS.
I havent had a chance to try it yet on my GN but you can now create "IPSec XAuth with PSK" (AKA Cisco VPN). If you have the GSM version of the GN you might run into problems though:

I'm new here, but I've visited frequently for rooting instructions and things like that. I'm very impressed by the work that this community has put out, and I figure that I'd ask a favor directly. I only assume that some, if not all, of the members simply mod for fun, nor do I don't know how difficult it is to modify code, but I'm going to ask anyways and hope that I don't come off like an idiot.
I go to school at the University of Alaska Anchorage, and the printing system here allows for mobile printing. The problem is that I traded my old laptop for a Windows RT device, and although my vivotab is jailbroken and does properly run ported apps, it doesn't want to run the mobile print exe. I looked up the problem on google to see if I could fix it myself only to learn that the exe for mobile printing installs a pharos popup client along with the printer drivers and that Ohio State University has an open source club that solved the problem for Linux laptops by installing CUPS.
I don't know if anyone is interested in helping or if this is even possible, but I thought I'd give this a shot. Also it sounds relevant since RT is somewhat catered to the college student, and it looks like at least a handful of universities use the same type of system? I don't know. I'm in over my head, so thanks!
