So the makers of Shazam decided to make a so called premium app which comes for $5.99. It features unlimited tagging, lyrics, biography, discography, directly purchasing through the marketplace, watching YouTube videos related to the tagged songs and that's pretty much about it.
First I was like "wtf? What tagging limit?". Then I saw and installed the update that came for free Shazam today. And guess what. Tagging is now limited to 5 times a month. Not to mention that the free version of course doesn't offer any of the goodies the premium version comes shipped with. Premium doesn't even have a trial to check out if these additional features are really worth the price. And oh.. If you update your free copy of Shazam, you'll quickly notice that it disappeared from the apps list, just to be found in the games hub now. What the heck? Since when do music related apps belong there?
Shazam Encore, which the premium app is correctly named, doesn't even integrate in the Zune hub, which in my opinion would make sense.
What do you guys think about what Shazam is pulling off there? Is this restricted to WP7 only? Or does it affect iOS and Android apps as well?
No this is not limited to wp7, this happened on iOS and then on android as well. This seems to be how they operate and since I do not have my phone right now and will have to reload all my apps I am sure I will get stuck with the downgraded free app.
If that's the way they go now, I'm pretty sure they check the version of the app we use and if it's not the limited free version, they'll just refuse the service.

I read a shazaam feature is coming with Mango. It will be built into Zune, Shazaam wont be needed anymore.

Yeah, Bing Audio. The question is just, if it's as good as Shazam is. Seeing that bing maps doesn't even support most of the countries in Europe. Works pretty well for larger cities in Germany, but there's still lots of unknown places. If Bing Audio ends up the same, I'm afraid it won't be any thread to services like Shazam. But we'll see.
If Bing Audio is as ****ty as Bing Map is in my country I suppose it will be mediocre and we will still need Shazam for a long time.
Anyway, thanks for the tip, I will not update Shazam.

Word on different forums is that if you have installed the free Shazam app before May 11th, you will have no tagging limit. That was supposed to be some sort of launch bonus. I haven't tried it yet after I installed the update. But I'll do so tomorrow and report back.

I did, and indeed I have no tagging limit.
So you mean, if ever I update Shazam - and only if I update - then the limit will appear?
No, I think it has to do with your original "purchase" (install) date, not the date of the version currently installed. If you locked in prior to the change, you should always have free tagging. You just won't have the rest of the new features of Encore (which do sound pretty nice - but still not worth $6 to me).
I downloaded the update this morning, and I don't see any limits appearing in the app so far. My original install date was January 5th.
[Edit] Correction -
Apparently if you originally downloaded prior to the change, you also get some of the Encore features. From the Marketplace description of the free version:
Start your music journey and enjoy Shazam to:
• Identify what song is playing and buy the track direct on Zune Marketplace
• Read album reviews, artist biographies and discographies
• Watch YouTube videos for tagged artists from within the App
• View lyrics and sing along to tagged tracks
• Sort tags by date, artist and track
• Store your tagged tracks and easily view your tag history
This App gives you 5 Tags per month*. For unlimited tagging and exclusive features try our premium App – Encore.
*If you’ve been using Shazam on your current Windows Phone 7 phone since before May 11, 2011, you’re still entitled to unlimited tagging.
Thanks RoboDad for this very detailed answer.
One more question, since you updated, is Shazam located in the Game Hub?
Thanks
Yeah, something is wrong somewhere. It shows up in both the app list AND games hub for me. But, I had previously pinned it to Start, and that link no longer works. And to aggravate things even more, I can't pin the new version to Start at all. I assume they'll fix it soon.

Many thanks. One more good reason not to update.

Since the update it movied out of the app list and onto the Games Hub... had to repin it (from inside Games Hub).
Am I the only one to think that Shazam's attitude is not very fair?
Basically, Shazam is proposing an update that will actually limit your app and make it worse (e.g. tag limitation, app installed in the game hub, etc.)
Their goal being to make you purchase their $5.99 version.
It's their program, they can do this if they choose. ATT used to charge a monthly fee for this type of service. Do they still do that? It's still functional as a trial app though.
The game Triangula did the same thing. It was a free game with no ads.
The most recent update, added ads to the free version and required you pay to get the updates and go ads free.

I think you miss some major points here. Triangula is fully playable, even with adds. Shazam on the other hand is barely usable upon its limitation to just 5 tags a month. Triangula full comes for what? Like 1.99? Shazam goes for 4 bucks more. So it's extremely cut in its functionality while costing 3 times as much as Triangula.
Of course it's their product and they can do whatever they want to. But I believe they're gonna lose a whole lot of customers this way.

D'oh! You're right, of course. I was trying to pin from the [defunct] shortcut in the app list. Thanks!

Not to pick nits (OK, so I like to pick nits, so sue me ), but that isn't quite the way things went down with Triangula (or with Shazam, for that matter).
If you had already downloaded the free version of the game before the paid version came out, you got a free upgrade to the paid, ad-free, deluxe version. Well, at least I did .
And it's the same with Shazam. Users who secured their "purchase" of the free version prior to the release of the premium version still get unlimited tagging. So no one is losing anything. If someone didn't take the time to download the app prior to the change, then they never had the promise of free, unlimited tagging.
And, as has already been mentioned, this is no different from the way the app is already marketed on Android and iOS, so it isn't exactly news.
mine dissapeared from my app list and is NOT found in the games hub but when I find shazam on the marketplace on my phone, it just gives the option to share (as if it was already installed) this happened after the update. It is as if it is installed in a repository that is unable to be reached by windows phone (or the shortcut was broken by the update). Anyone else experience this?
I cant even find it in the marketplace anymore 0.o on my pc and on my phone its not even their. Is it not their for anyone else?
I have seen a lot of people with the same issue I have. I download an app from the market, and it sucks so I uninstall... but now It's tied to my account forever.
When I flash, or get a new device, I like to use the web based market to re-install my apps. But I have pages and pages of apps I will never use again.
I proposed the following to Google to fix this.
If you agree that this is a good idea and would like to see this feature.. or if you have a better idea, please let Google know. They will only change this stuff if enough people request it to be changed.
I submitted a request here:
https://support.google.com/androidm...tact_type=market_phone_tablet_web&paginated=1
This was my request:
There needs to be a way to remove unused applications from our market accounts. I have many applications that I tried, dont like, and will never install again. Every time I get a new device or do a factory reset, I have to search through tons of unwanted applications just to find the apps I'd actually like to install. I understand giving the user the ability to delete apps that were paid for and the possibility of accidental deletions can become a support nightmare. To solve this I’d like to propose an “Archived Apps” section. Users can Archive applications they do not use. The application is then moved into a special Archive section where it can remain tied to the users account without being “In the Way”. Applications in the Archive section should have a “Restore” (button rather than install) that when pressed, would move it back to the users regular account and become active and installable again. When searching in the market mobile app, these apps will also show with the status Archived rather than purchased or installed. Selecting the app will give the option to “Restore” it to your active applications at which point it can be installed.
i actually have an open ticket with them regarding this problem
google tech support says it's a known issue, and they have no way to fix it yet.

Awesome!
It's a lot of work for them to fix, and my concern is that it wont be on the radar unless it's highly requested.
Same thing with Amazon's store. I chatted with a rep, and they said there was no way to remove them, but they are aware people are interested in doing this.
Just curious:
Let's say I purchased an app from the Marketplace, and it was later delisted. Using Windows Phone Device Manager, I can back up the individual files for my apps, but is it possible to also restore them? Say I had to do a hard reset, or uninstalled an app, not realizing it was delisted. Is it possible to put the app back on my phone? Additionally, it's my understanding that pirated Xbox Live games will not have achievements available to them. Therefore, if there IS a way to restore apps that I've uninstalled (or otherwise lost), will it enable Xbox Live functionality if it's backed up from my phone and restored to my phone?
I did a search of the forums, but didn't find an answer, so I apologize if this has already been asked. Thank you for your time.
This won't work. There's more to an app than just its install files; it also needs to be registered with the AppMgr (this is what does things like put it in the app list) and also needs a security chamber (basically, a user account) created with custom permissions (each app runs in a different chamber).

So there's no way to ever reinstall a deleted app if it's no longer in the Marketplace? ... Damn. That sucks.
Still, thanks for your reply. Much obliged!

There should be if you check your dl history on the WP site. You can redownload apps from there and if it works anything like the Xbox marketplace, this will include delisted apps. Haven't had to do it myself yet, so cannot be sure but worth a try.

FYI, the Marketplace does not work like that for WP7. If you try to redownload an app that you previously had (free or paid) that is NO LONGER on the Marketplace, with the Reinstaller App for example, it will not find the files to do the download.
However, if you know who the developer is/was, might be able to contact them and have them send you the XAP....
I have searched this forum and the web, still surprised about the poor integration of multiple devices in Google Play.
Can anybody tell me if there is any easy and fast way to transfer most of your app's to a new device?
I am amazed the lack of usability in this matter? Why is there not a column based page with all your registered devises from left to right and all the app's downwards, then a box to "tick" on each device to install or delete multiple app's in one go??? How hard can it be???
I know you can use Titanium but you need to be rooted and still go by each app individual or take all in one go, this do not make any sense since a newer device might not need all the app's.
On Google Play I can see all my app's and then install them one by one with a confirmation box for every one? long and boring task.
A column based set-up where you choose which app's to be installed on what device you have registered seems like a "no-brainer" to me but I have not been able to find anything that resembles that??
Does it exist and am I a knob or is this a major oversight by Google???
All suggestions are welcome.
Robert
The key here is you need to tell Google to restore your phone once you install an OS. If you did this, the Play Store automatically downloads all your previously installed apps.
Also, in Titanium you have the checkboxes on the side as you're asking for, you just deselect the checkboxes besides the red apps pretty much...
The Sansung Gear Apps app is much improved, but it is frustrating for a seller like me. I create an app and upload. Then I sit and wait for weeks for someone to discover it by accident.
Example: I have a novelty watchface that shows the time in a cipher -- a code that looks like gibberish, but if you know how to "decode" it, you can tell the time, date, battery power, etc. pretty easily. Sure, it's geeky, but it's unique as far as I can tell.
The problem is that even with the new "New" apps list, it does not appear in the 350 app list (I think that is how many there are. Not sure.)
I sent feedback to Samsung and they explained:
"Regarding your inquiry, we would like to inform to inform you that our store is operated as 'Curated Store', it means all applications cannot be displayed under each category.
"The applications are displayed on the list based on the number of downloads, price’s value and sales period, so please understand our store concept."
How can a new app that no one knows about be downloaded if it doesn't appear in the available lists?
In my case, the app is called "Alien Invasion Cypher" and I now have one download after many weeks. The guy must have searched on one of those words from the app name and my app popped up. Otherwise he never would have seen it.
There's got to be a better way. Why not a web site with unlimited lists of apps? Or a new app list that shows new apps, not new apps that have been downloaded?
While it seems no one is interested, I have an update. The new Gear App shows new apps even if they have not been purchased yet. Thanks, Samsung!
yeah I think absolutly the same as you...the gear store is such a chaos...and very hard for new developer so for examples I made some watchfaces and some has still only 10 download after a month...and it is really too hard to find new good apps like your new app :/
