Swiftkey Question: - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Are there more options/features in the full paid version than what's shone in the trial version? I'm running the 30 day trial right now, and so far, liking it. Just wondering (hoping) if there's more customization before I commit. Thanks.

No, the free version is a full version, it just times out after 31 days.
I'd become a big fan of Swype, but SwiftKey is so much faster, especially once it starts learning how you write sentences. It just keeps getting better and better the longer I've had it.
Don't pay full price until you have to (30 day times out). I got it at a sales price; you never know when they might lower it for a day again.

The free beta program has the latest and greatest version. It is about to close but you can still get in:
SwiftKey VIP

I see. Thanks for the responses and suggestions.
Anyone else notice that you can't use the cursor icon from Gingerbread? It just disappears after a second. I was hoping the paid version would give the option to not have this happen, as I use it to move my cursor around to help edit. Otherwise, Swiftkey is growing on me.

I've registered and my account has been activated by Swiftkey mods... but I'm not sure how to find the free beta program...? It just leads to either the free trial version (for 31 days) or the full paid version.
Edit: Beta is over. Only the trial and paid versions exists now. Oh well. Thanks for the suggestion anyway. I'll make my decision when my trial is up.

The beta is open to new people until the next cycle starts on 1/18/11:
http://www.swiftkey.net/vip
In the mean time download the 30 day free trial from appbrain: url=http://www.appbrain.com/app/swiftkey-keyboard-free/com.touchtype.swiftkey.trial
or just search for swiftkey in the market.

Thanks K5. I signed up and look forward to the Beta on Jan 18th.
My impression of Swiftkey so far is that when it works and predicts full sentences accurately, it's impressive and intuitive. However, this happens very rarely. More often than not, the prediction isn't what I want to say, and I end up thumbing out almost all the letters to a word anyway. And because I'm so busy making sure the next prediction is what I want to say, I end up taking longer to type out messages than if I was just thumbing them out manually with a more responsive keyboard. I suppose more time is required for it to "learn" how I write, but for now, I am not sold.
Typing on the Nexus S (and on Android platform in general) remains a very sore spot for me. It just feels like a second rate experience trying to type. I've experimented with lots of different keyboards and can't find one where I can thumb out words confidently.

I'm actually trying out the Better Keyboard Beta 8 that's open right now... and finding very impressive results so far. Seems to be far more fluid and accurate.

Swype...

Forgive me if this was mentioned elsewhere, but any chance on a swype port for HTC Hero?
I heard it may be working on Eris.
There is a video showing a demo of a similar application running on the Eris....
looking into it, I guess it's not out yet, but yeah
First, this would be better in the apps forum. It is a cross device app so it fits better there. Regardless, check out ShapeWriter on the Android Market. It does the same thing and IMO it is amazing! Seriously thinking about buying it (which I never do). Takes some getting used to but they have a 30 day free trial. Definitely recommend.

I dont think so but I'm not sure. My biggest complaint with it is the fact that it has the comma button so close to space and so big. I always hit too many commas. But I would recommend we all support this developer as this app is awesome. I have nothing to gain but I think that's what Android needs. More devs like this making kick ass apps.

agreed, well except for the comma issue, I haven't hit it very many times yet.
but yeah, we need to get this dev to build us more stuff.
I'm running the trial for now, I'll prob purchase it after the holidays.
(not too much money, just extremely busy)
I bought it flat out, and completely happy, no regret. And I will say that when I want to hit period, I hit question mark, when I want to hit question mark, I hit 123 and switch layouts, ugh...otherwise...
Also, if you have problems with a word not picking up, it probably doesn't know it, type it out manually, hit add, then it finds it just fine, was my only major complaint, but SO simple to remedy. Really love this.

I havent really noticed. I have been running it for a few weeks and it seems fine for me. I run my Gutted rom with Apps2SD and I have Advanced Task Manager set to close apps every hour so I keep a good amount of free memory around anyway. But overall, I havent noticed any decrease in memory when using this over the HTC IME.

[APP] New Xscope update version 6

Had Xscope lite on my Nexus as the default browser. The reason I loved it was because of the look, it was "lite" unlike the other browsers like Opera (which do run faster) I liked xscope because the top bar was minimal and scrollable.
With this new version they COMPLETELY changed it! Now it has a watermark that reads "trial version" totally TACKY! And two navigation bars!!! How can they make such a drastic change?!
Needless to say uninstalled. Now going to try to find an apk for the older version.
SUCKS BALLS!
I was very surprise too this morning when i install this new update going back to previous one too.
Please let me know if you find the previous version.
why not just stop being cheap and help support the dev by buying the full one?

because the browser isn't even one of the top 5 available.
the dev hasnt been shy about charging more than it is worth becuase google "takes too much"

Aye, dolphin did the same thing.
The original one had a very simplistic tab bar, but now with the HD version you need to swipe all the way to the corner of the screen to call upon a stupid popup tab bar.
I need to find how to save old apks, anyone know which folder they're stored in?

About the dev charging too much?...its three dollars? You could find that on the ground in one day. Damn...I mean damn do we (Android users) need to support our devs...look, I have to say this on a dev forum
Full version is worth the price to many, but in a few weeks all of the old features that are missing at this moment will be replaced. Wait and see...this browser is going to be so complete. It's already number one in my book.
yeah. Xscope 5 is the best browser available. Its a bit slow and laggy on Vibrant, but its still very good. V6 changed everything, i downgraded immediately to V5 and emailed developer to maybe try to change his mind and go back to developing V5 (some extra features, more optimization, but keep the GUI)

Improvements to v6 will be coming from the dev. On my phone its running faster then the older version...by far! Instant back and forward, faster page loads, ..better everywhere. Dev said he will be adding in more features that were left out but it does take time. He needs to make sure he does it right, or there would be bugs.

Yeah it definitely loads pages faster, but accessing tabs is a little more of a pain in the ass. You can't have the tab bar open by itself, the stupid control bar always has to be open at the same time.

Personally, I hope he keeps doing what he's doing.
Sure there are things that aren't in the new one that were in the old one (such as a custom user agent per favourite), but the dev. has already said the additional features are coming.
There may be some ppl who don't like the new look, but others do, and it seems a lot faster than the old one. It's a total re-write, so I'm sure he's coded it much better having learned some lessons.
But hey, I only supported the guy 6 months ago when I bought it, so I'm sure my opinion doesn't count as much as those who are freeloading the unpaid trial version...
To avoid three presses to get to bookmarks, you can make bookmarks your home page, and start an extra tab leaving the bookmarks tab available. You can swipe between tabs to get to your bookmarks tab.

Swype v2.4.44.10912 Confirmed working on Incredible

This thread confirmed working Swype 2.4.44.10912 for HTC Incredible. Be sure you download "SWYPO v2.4.44 - WVGA English" version.
Came across other versions (eg 10814) that did not work.
Perform an "upgrade" of the package and dictionary is saved.
Hope this makes it easier for you guys to find a working version!

Almost every person on this forum that likes Swype has said that they would buy it if it was available. Closing a Beta and making APKs that expire only leave people with limited choices. Either find a copy that works, or choose another product. If you make someone have to buy another product, why would they switch back to your product once its ready, especially if you have to pay for that one as well?
That being said, Ultra Keyboard seems awesome. I will probably buy it after my trial is up unless I find something about it I don't like. Thank you for the suggestion.

just checked this out via the free trial, definitely doesnt seem like a bad alternative. i recommend trying it out if you, like me, cant find a working swype link.
I am trying ultra keyboard. It has more features than swype, but so far it seems less accurate. In other words, I make a lot more mistakes. It could be a matter of getting used to. Also, the keyboard is ugly compared to the red Swype version which was beautiful.
I'm in Swype beta, this is my current version. Although mine ends with 10912.t100
Not sure if that matters or means anything.

Anyone having issues with it, try out SlideIT - I have used them both and love the responsiveness and accuracy of SlideIT>Swype. I have no affiliation with it, just giving my sure to be met with harsh criticism opinion lol
I am not interested in the morality of possessing "swyped" software, or the argument thereof. I am also not interested in the substitutes-i have tried them and don't care for them. I am simply concerned with locating a functional version of swype
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
All these different versions of swype being canceled over and over again is really annoying
Nice! It's great to be swyping again. Confirmed working on my Incredible running Virtuous v3.0.1. It also looks a lot cleaner than the version 1.61.37.8128 of swype I was running previously which had "expired" yesterday.
Ultra is better than slide it. I would gladly pay for swype if they made it available on the market.
Ultra does have allot of features but not as accurate as swype.

The upgrade also works for me, using Skyraider vanilla 3.0 RC. I don't understand swype's strategy. Why don't they just put it on the market? I'd pay for it.

I write awfully slow on this, but I guess you'll learn!
That looks terrible. It can only really be used with one hand and would be terrible to use while walking. It's cumbersome and not really that intuitive as well unlike Swype. I can't see this catching all at all.

It was almost a year ago when they tried to get into the market with their unusual keyboard, and until now it's a big fail. It's not a comfortable keyboard imo, although I appreciate this 'out of the box' kind of thinking.

That looks terrible, just my $.02.
At least when I first saw Swype, I saw the potential in it. And after a few weeks of awkward learning, it was by far and above my favorite keyboard on android. I can't see 8Pen even being an option for me.
Wow that looks terrible
My 14 YO daughter uses this keyboard and her words per minute are incredible. I tried it and can't get it. I think it has to do with my mind being so programmed for QWERTY. The pattern for creating words with this keyboard is so different that I have to think of every step. My daughter, on the other hand, has used alternate keyboards for so long (i.e. T9) that her brain was able to adapt very quickly. Personally I prefer the swipe style keyboards. My favorite is ShapeWriter before being acquired by Nuance. The current market version sucks, Google for version 3.0.9.
interesting video and an interesting app. :heads up:
I tried it and hated it... I don't feel like I should have to completely reprogram the way I think just to use a keyboard. I guess eventually you'd get it, but who wants to spend a few weeks learning to use a keyboard?

I'm with davtfor here. I'm not super slow but I'm a lot faster using better keyboard. I used 8pen exclusively for about 3 weeks and I'd still have to periodically have to lift my thumb to find a character.
But it is an interesting experiment. I might use it for another couple of weeks again.

Why Swype is better, way better, than SwiftKey

Since i stepped into Android, by one thing i was amazed and it was/is Swype. Then other keyboards appeared and SwiftKey X was the most popular among them. So i used it for two weeks to see how good and efficient it is then went back to Swype. Why? The video proves why.
I am on 102°F while i was typing (in fact that's the reason why i have done this video as i had nothing to do, lol), so take 30-45 seconds out from both the video.
I would like to find a more simpler article as base, but couldn't find any by simple Googling.
Regards.
PS: If already this has been done by some fellow member please pardon me, i haven't searched
I agree with you totally, imho after swype any other keyboard in android makes me sad panda =(
I actually like SwitKey better... but I use Swype. I like being able to type with one hand.
P.S. not sold on the new Swype beta - I love the prediction, but it seems to be a bit of a hog.
I am a FlexT9 man myself..
No offense, but you seem to be pretty slow at typing and I think that's why you are faster with Swype. I think it really comes down to peoples personal typing styles. I am a fast typer but end up making a decent amount of mistakes especially with the stock HTC keyboard. I recently started using the trace function on the stock keyboard on my Evo 3D (custom ICS rom though) which is basically the same thing as Swype. While I did enjoy it more than normal typing and it made me faster, I ended up correcting a lot of errors and inputting new words. I then bought Swiftkey 3 and after setting it up, fell in love. It's just a lot smarter than Swype. It's like it knows what I want to say before I even start typing. Also I love the new cobalt theme they have.
So it really depends on your personal typing styles.
I use the stock HTC keyboard, which has Swype-like "trace input" (basically a blatant clone of Swype, but IMO a nicer looking keyboard; I did install Swype before I found the option to enable trace input) and I think it is absolutely fantastic. However, on my Blackberry Playbook, the built in (and non-changeable ) keyboard is made by SwiftKey, and is apparently very similar to the Android version, only themed differently. I have to say it is quite excellent, it can often predict the next word I want to use, preventing me even having to type some words at all, and at times only makes me type the first letter or two before it guesses. Main reason I haven't tried it on Android is because it costs, and I am perfectly happy with the HTC keyboard, which is free.
If there was some amalgamation between Swype and SwiftKey, with the swyping of Swype and the prediction of SwiftKey, it would undoubtedly be my keyboard of choice.
Stock ICS keyboard FTW!
I prefer the one handed operation of Swype 3.25. Swiftkey has been ruined. I used to use it and its pumpkin theme because it disabled the keypress pop up. Now it's in every theme. And there is still no dedicated enter key.
The new Swype sucks, after nuance bought them out. I hate the mandatory Swype connect process that runs, the large footprint, etc.. 3.25 is probably the last acceptable version. If anyone has apk's of builds produced after 3.25, please post them as I'd love to try them out.
Also if anyone has a stock ics keyboard apk that was pulled from a ROM, not the market version, post that too please.

I did notice that and consider it, but to be honest, the screen on my phone is a bit cramped for "proper" typing, so I decided to stick with my HTC trace input. I'd probably only go for SwiftKey if it added a swype/trace like function.

I have used lots of keyboards of every type and I always come back to Swype. I like Swiftkey's prediction but I've had tough life with predictions. And anyway, my main concern is the speed which Swype most definitely provides me. It depends on your typing habits and screen size, of course.

I always liked ai type until I tried the SwiftKey beta. My only wish is that SwiftKey would do voice to text like Ai type does using the ics real time transcription rather than the old one. I never liked swype mainly because I drive for a living so my use case makes it tough to swype and drive. Much easier to peck but even easier still to speak.

I used swype quite a lot but found it would remember everything I'd typed. So it would end up changing the correct word to a captcha I'd typed in months ago. Now I use SwiftKey to get round that problem
I also find Swype beta to be faster than swiftkey.. Nevertheless, both keyboard make people's eyes looks like this O_O
I type faster than my friend's BlackBerry using only my thumb

The fact is that, with SwiftKey, you can tipe without watching the screen. If you use Swipe, you must watch it! Or I'm wrong?
Nah, its just getting used to your phone... Somehow I Swype blindly, just a matter of time for everyone.
