Replacing stock clock app - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was using stock clock and to be honest missing a few things like timer smart alarm from my SGS is there any way to replace the stock app with say SGS app after all they are very similar.
Any input would be appreciated.
PS I was looking at honeycomb media player install would using similar method allow me to replace stock app?

the difference between the SGS and the SNS is that the SGS phones use the Touchwiz framework, so my understanding would be that in order to get the clock ported over you would also need the relevant section of the framework for it to even work

It's what I was afraid, is there any replacement for standart clock it's poor to say the least ok for the moment but would need to do something with it, there is a talk of porting some of TW codecs over to support more media playback.
Any other info would be apiciated

Doues anyone elese has any input?

I tried Alarm Clock PlusV2 based on your recommendation in another thread.
Doesn't work properly on my phone.
I can set an alarm just fine, and I can hear the alarm tone just fine when selecting which one to use, but when the alarm actually goes off, the sound is always so muted I can't hear it unless I hold it up to my ear. I uninstalled it because of this.
No such problem with the stock alarm clock.

that's interesting yet odd...
since it uses the system audio
or you can select from another source if you have apps like Ring Droid installed
also you can select between normal vs. gentle
then for each of those you can select between Ring Tone vs. Music
both me and my wife phone have it installed, and it's loud and clear

Yeah, it's really weird. I only use system ringtones when testing it. I almost never use and alarm clock, my internal one works pretty damn well, but if I'd been relying on this app during my testing, I would have certainly overslept.

I'm using one of the sense style clocks by factory widgets, the glass style one in particular, easily found in the market.

[Q] Modifying musicwidget.apk?

Hi All,
Is there any way to modify the musicwidget.apk in stock 2.3.3 ROM so that it can work with ADW Launcher?
After using the new stock music player, I have started liking it too much and want to get rid of all 3rd party music players. The only issue is that the music widget cant be used on other launchers. Can we make some changes like changing the manifest file or some other code so that it will work in the 3rd party launchers?
I need to know how to modify all widgets to use them on other lunchers ..can some one help us?
yes . its possible , ill look into it tonight . can you pm me a link for the music player? also pm for further info .

ok, no go on this yet. meanwhile I have been discussing offlist with phillu97 on the possibilities and found out that there is a widget in the market called "Phantom Music Widget" which works with all stock and most 3rd party music players.
It works by emulating the headset button event. However the implementation is too buggy. Anyone here willing to experiment with the codes from Phantom widget to see if it works out for the musicwidget? I have the app and can attach the apk if someone wants it for experimental purposes.
its way too ... complicated. I just wont budge no matter what. But try widgetsoid. I'm thinking of building that from ground up, but only with the play, pause, fwd and rwd features. its sorta gonna look like the powercontrol.
unless anyone else have any ideas?

Why not re-use the skin & graphics from the existing widget? In anycase the stock widget has those 3 buttons only.
cos that defeats the whole purpose since you cant use it on other launchers

What would you like to see implemented in CM10?

So, now that CM9 is stable, and CM10 is under development, what are you hoping the developers merge?
Personally, I have a few changes I'd like to see.
One, I'd like Apollo to be replaced, or repaired. No landscape support, a white-holo theme that doesn't fit with the black-holo stock ICS/JB look, and downloading album art from a data connection rather than using the embedded album art...all in all, I hate Apollo music, and I think many would agree that it is an inferior music player. At the very least, allow a setting to use the embedded art, and give it a black, rather than white, UI.
I'd like the lockscreen on phones to be enabled for landscape, and for tablet lockscreens to be enabled for portrait, and to either respond to the orientation settings, or the auto-rotate setting. So far, the lockscreen orientation is not well implemented. I know it is capable of using landscape, because in CM9, I disabled auto-rotate with the notification bar toggle, while in landscape, and was able to use a landscape lockscreen, so it's there. It just needs to be enabled.
Better unity between the Cyanogen tweaks and stock android. For example, the power toggles in the notification tray, and the power widget. The backlight setting is a good example - in the notification tray, it's dim, 25, 50, 75, 100, auto. In the widget, it's dim, 40, 100, auto. I'd like to see the widget either use 50 as the midpoint, or the notification tray to use increments of 20, rather than 25, so that it has 40 as a midpoint. Or better yet, make both the widget and pulldown toggles exactly the same - make the widget use 25% increments, or the notification bar use the stock settings. The backlight is only one example, but I think there are a few easy tweaks that would make it feel more "unified." Even the wallpaper menus - if you look at the menu for choosing the Cyanogenmod wallpapers, it has a slightly different UI than the menu for stock wallpapers. If you add the static menu button to the navigation bar, it is visually different from the "normal" menu button that shows when apps need it, even though it serves the same purpose. I'd like to see CM integrate cleanly with what remains of stock Android.
I'm not completely sure if this one is possible, because I don't think the GPU uses a governor like the CPU, but rather a set clock-rate, but if possible, I'd like to see the ability to set the GPU in the performance settings.
Ringtones. So far, to enable a song as a ringtone, you need to use Apollo. So, for people who removed it for another music player, or kangs that don't have it, they can't set a song as a ringtone. Also, once you pick a song as a ringtone, it stays in your ringtones menu, so after a while, it gets cluttered. I think a cleaner implementation of ringtones is in order. Rather than implementing the song as a ringtone, once you choose a song, it should gray out the default ringtones, and use the song. Something like "enable custom ringtone" checkbox, and once checked, it gives you a file browser to pick a song, and grays out the stock ringtones, or something along those lines. This would allow people who don't use Apollo to set a song as a ringtone, and would prevent clutter in the ringtone list.
The Galaxy S3 has a feature that allows the phone to stay awake while you are using it. Rather than timing out if it detects no input, it will use the front camera with face detection to see if you are still looking at the phone, and if you are, stay awake. This would be nice to put into the settings.
And lastly...a file browser. CM7 had one, so I don't get why they would take a step back and remove it from CM9. It's not hard to get one, but it would be nice to see integrated.
And yes, I know Steve Kondik won't read this. But, where CM is a community ROM and anyone can submit code, I think this would be a good place for users to submit ideas and feedback, while being exposed to developers. I'm willing to bet if the community submits ideas that the developers like, it can greatly increase the quality of Cyanogenmod, which is already the best out there, making it perfect.

The lock screen portrait for tablets and vice verse is weird an uncomfortable. For music, god get Google play music or a new Apollo theme its not so hard. The only GPU all that does good is chain fire 3d, which is incompatible with jellybean. Ringtones can be implemented without Apollo. The stocky feeling is still there. The Ui can't be completely the same as stock. And for a file browser, devs are already including oi file explorer in jellybean and if not, DOWNLOAD IT. DON'T BE LAZY. And suggest these to your phone devs, not here. As I am already running a non alpha stable release of jellybean on my phone, there are many things you can do to fix these yourself.

i would like to have two diefferent volume controls for media
one for the normal phone speaker(s)
and one control for headsets, etc.
another feature i would like to have is:
app folders in the app drawer of trebuchet (not only on home screen) (couldn´t find an option to enable it yet, if there is one)

i know there is a control to set the volume down if the volume is very loud and you switch to your headset to take care of your ears
but it doesn´t turn the volume down before switching to the headset so the music could be loud for 1 or a half second
and it is good if you want to hear music with another volume on phone speakers then headset
the feature is not to important but i hope that they could fix it, that the volume changes after switching
Hi if these can happen in cm10 it would be fantastic..
1. Sounds of call and music can be played through different speakers ie headset, Bluetooth or speakers separately.
2. Two or more media players able to play on different speakers.
3. We can mix call and music so the person other side of call can here music also..
4. We can record audio from different source like Mic,call,FM or music separatly at same time
5. There should be a mixture interface from which inputs and output can be controlled independently..

good ideas, but do your really want to hear music while calling someone
and i don´t know if this is realizable (don´t you need more than one sound card to do this or something like that?)
good 8mp camera please
more elaborate volume controls
more governors and io schedulers and a touch recovery would also be great

Music during call mean low volume background music. Although it is possible to play MP3 on poweramp and videos on Mx during call but the other side party only hear Mic input..

How about separate volume controls per program? Using A2DP with the cars stock stereo works amazingly well for almost everything. Phone calls and music are fine, but navigation is almost impossible to hear and alerts are deafening. It would nice to be able to adjust the volume of just Google maps versus the rest of the programs, for example.
I actually like Apollo, just wish it rotated.
As for a complete longshot: Maybe a better car dock? I don't know how many people use car docks, but they're almost all terrible and completely unintegrated with the programs. The dock's I've tried just launch the music, podcast or maps program...I could do that with the stock launcher. Also, with the phone in dock mode it's hard to hit the buttons. The touch interface is expecting a decisive press or swipe, but that's difficult when the phone is at a fixed point (on the windshield, for example) and you're finger is hovering around it...hitting bumps and whatnot.
Better gesture actions. Some very cool stuff is offered out of the box by the Samsung SIII and incorporating that into CM10 would be great.
Selfishly, I'd love to see support for popular older phones (Droid Inc) but I see why they are dropping support for older phones - you have to keep the new shiny phones working before you bother with the old ones....

This one I especially would like to see, too. Its the one and only feature I miss from stock Samsung, and the replacement apps available in play store are, well, not perfect to say the least. Despite this, face awake is certainly a feature that should be included in the ROM (assuming of course it is wanted - but as you point out, its a wish thread :fingers-crossed.
Regarding Apollo, my two cents are that it should probably be split off from CM development entirely. Not sure what the rest is thinking, but personally I don't use it anyway, and giving it to a dedicated team might help getting some load off CM development after all its "only" a music player. Again, just my personal view from a complete naive outside point of view.
File Browser - I'm actually undecided. Personally, for example, I use a replacement anyway. But on the other hand its a basic component of Android OS, so it also has some logic to keep a rather simple one as fallback option in case of problems.
I disagree a bit with the performance tweaks. For sake of release stability I'd actually keep them out completely, since users really knowing what they do in these advanced options can easily use community build kernels optimized for this. Same argument as above: keep CM focused (and avoid unnecessary bug reports, too) and leave the luxury-addons to dedicated teams. Use the strength of the community :highfive:
And, last not least, also my thanks to all people involved in CM development. It is outstanding work, providing us with a competitive alternative and a great example of community-driven development Keep going! :good:
The pop up text that CM recently implanted in source I think, for every cm10 rom
this right here......is my.. pretty boy swag!
I'd love to see more integration with JB UI, list mode rather than this tiles in 'artist section' - i think all of those should look the same. Also music controls on lockscreen - I'd really love to have that sony's solution - when u see lockscreen you just swipe clock for music controls, swipe back to see clock - it's lighter, more elegant and u don't always unlock your phone to change music, the current look is a shame. I hope apollo won't be forgotten cuz currently it stands out comparing to rest of the software : C

[Q] Apps safe to remove/Freeze?

I am coming from the SGS Fasciante, so am quite familiar with all this flashing and stuff...but I just (FINALLY) got my upgrade to the SGS3 and I wanted to make sure of a few things before i go messing around.
I have rooted and unlocked and installed recovery...root works fine..even AdFree app works...
Using pure stock rooted..no rom has been flashed...Android 4.0.4 IMM76D.I535VRALHE
I remember reading somewhere that this phone now has some checker built in that will give an error that "Unauthorized software detected"...or something...if you modify the os too much...
Is this still true...? I want to remove or freeze the crap apps that come with the phone, but don't want it lock up the phone on me...Is it better to delete the app, or use a freeze program...any suggestions?
What about OTA updates with this phone?...do I need to be concerned about that... will it one day just deiced to update and i loose root etc....
Also, I flashed the DSP Manager.zip i used on my Fasciante..and it is working..most of the time...doesn't seem to affect Amazon MP3 like it did on the Fascinate...DSP Manger also won't stay on a lot...keeps reverting to stock sound quality....keep having to start stop player app and tweak DSP app to get it to tun back on...any ideas...?

You should only get the "unauthorized software detected" message if you attempt to flash a custom kernel (Or ROM that contains a custom kernel) when you haven't unlocked your bootloader, the latest version of ez unlock (1.4 I believe) will tell you it unlocked the bootloader and flashed a insecure aboot. Check out this guide and this guide for apps that are safe to remove or freeze on your phone (If you think you may need the app again sometime just freeze it rather then remove it that way if you need it latter you can unfreeze), also pay careful attention to the guides and make a backup before removing or freezing any apps. I personally use Titanium Backup for any application freezing or removing needs. If your running the stock Verizon ROM and your rooted there is always the possibility of them pushing an update along that breaks root (Fortunately you can restore a CWM or TWRP backup when you did have root, or use odin to restore the factory image). Further more, an awesome app by the name of OTA RootKeeper allows you to keep root even if Verizon issues a OTA update. I'm guessing DSP manager and Samsung's music player equalizer options may be interfearing with eachother causing the issues you mentioned. Technically this version of DSP Manager is for the international GS3 but it should still work on our Verizon version (As always make a backup before flashing anything). Plus not all parts of the Fascinate DSP Manager zip may be compatible with the Verizon Galaxy S3 once again causing you random problems. Well hope I helped let me know if you need more help .
About DSP manager...work fine in all players..including the Samsung player for flac files..but not for mp3...I did find winamp player works perfectly though with dsp manger I flashed..will have to try the one u linked to...

I agree, while the Samsung music player has a couple cool features and awesome UI most of the features seem kinda gimmicky like the sound alive settings, like you said I personally would stick with winamp, which is still a realy soild music player and the great sound and customization of DSP manager.

Yea..now that i can transfer my media player to the SGS3, my Fasicante officially gets retired..
There is only 2 other things with he SGS3 I am annoyed with at the moment:
Email and Gmail apps are ugly white versions...(special Touchwiz version I assume)I am not sure if there are blacked out versions of these for stock...I tried adding in the Email and Gmail .apk I was using from ICS for the Fasciante...but it wouldn't work....may just need to find another app from the market...
There doesn't seem to be any settings to adjust the toggles on the notification drop-down....don't need some, and want to add brightness toggle.......

I probably will...eventually...but I want to keep stock as much as possible...maybe once the final release of JB for this device is out...and the bugs are worked out.
Use titanium backup to freeze ur apps... Great program, should be mandatory for root users and ROM flashers (imo) . As far as what to freeze, general rule of thumb, dont freeze anything that starts with com or has andy the android as the icon. Be careful freezing any launchers and definately make a nandroid backup prior to any freezing.

Does anyone have a clock app that doesn't have the really weird alarm?
If you go into the clock that comes with, and set an alarm, the time selecting interface is really terrible.
I don't understand why google changes things that are clearly not broken.
I'm not exactly sure if it meets your requirements, but Timely is far and away my favorite clock app. Gorgeous UI, syncs across devices, wake up challenges, gentle alarm cycle, Now integration, etc and allows entering alarm times from a traditional "keypad"-esque interface if you wish.

I like Timely, but I get annoyed that the alarm volume is tied to the media volume rather than the alarm volume.

Love Timely... I've been using it since it first came out. Definitely the best alarm UI I've ever used.
You can also use double twist alarm clock

Used to use Circle alarm - it's worth checking it out, but since 4.4 I came across some issues where it wouldn't go off(although this might be connected to deep sleep states I've got in my kernel settings - never really took effort of investigating it further), so now I just use stock. Besides, I really like it.
Is it there any way to install Cyanogenmod/AOKP Clock on rooted stock Nexus 5?
I like default Clock app, but there is no CM options like flip over or shake to snooze... This options missing in Timely too...

Alarm help on stock Rom

I am running a fairly stock Rom that's fully rooted. Can anyone tell me how to get the stock alarm to use an increasing volume? Is there a Rom i can download and extract the clock app to add this feature? I want to start using the stock app rather than say alarm+ due to its integration with google now.

Google now will ask you what alarm app you want to use the first time. So you can use pretty much anything. I use circle alarm.
You may have to go into settings ...apps...go to all apps. Find the stock clock app and click it and clear defaults. Then if you have another alarm app, Google now will ask which you want to use.
If I completely misunderstood your post...apologies.
