[Q] Droid2 Global Underclock processor? - Droid 2 Global General

Ok I am a newbe.....so be gentle on me.
I have had my droid2 global for a week now..almost
My first one had rebooting(randomly on its own) issues and had to go back to the store.
This one is much better and my brother in law told me to root it and back it up and I did.
I also purchased an extended battery and am getting a little longer results.
So the Droid2 global has a 1.2 speed processor vs the 1.0 of the regular Droid2.
So I also notice battery life is shorter with the new global....probably due to the processor.
So I would assume it would be safe to UnderClock the processor to 1.0 and get a little more battery life...and less heat.
Brother in law says probably down to 800 but hey I don't wanna push it.
How do I go about doing that, I know most people wanna overclock...
Thanks in advance!

I use SetCPU to underclock to 1ghz. It saves bat and is still pretty fast. Download setcpu from their website free, or buy it from the marketplace. Cheers!

yeah, use setcpu to underclock, it supportst profiles so it changes frequencies depending on what profiles you have, which is very useful, i have mine overclocked to 1330MHz until it reaches 75% batterylife, which it is underclocked to 1150MHz, then at 40% i have it underclocked down to 800MHz.

Mines runs at 800 till 20% battery, then it goes to 600.
Mine is running Fission so its still pretty fast/responsive.

The processor could definitely be a part of it, but there is one other major difference between the Droid 2 and the Droid 2 Global that could account for a D2G draining battery faster than an identically configured D2. Namely the "Global" part of the Droid 2 Global.
The phone has two different Cellular chips, often referred to as "basebands", but being as "baseband" is a shortening of "cellular baseband processor" which is actually only part of the chip, I prefer the term "cellular modem", since the chips look to the main processor much like a cellular modem does to a PC (indeed they are often exactly the same chips).
One of these cellular modems is a 3GPP2 family modem (supporting CdmaOne CDMA2000 1xRTT, CDMA2000 EVDO Rev.A), which is the one used in the united states by Verizon.
The other cellular modem is a 3GPP family modem (supporting GSM, GPRS, EDGE, WCDMA (a.k.a. UMTS), HSDPA, and HSUPA). That is the one that that is used internationally, as very few countries besides the US have cellular providers that use 3GPP2 family standards.
Now back to the battery life. It will probably not surprise you to find out that having both Cellular Modems running, will use more power than just running one of them. So turn off the one you are not using. I'm guessing you live in the US, and are not using the GSM one.
To turn off the one you are not using follow the steps in the following video, except you will not be choosing global mode.
In case you don't want to watch the video, the steps are:
Go to the home screen.
Push the menu key.
Choose settings.
Choose Wireless & networks
Choose Mobile Networks.
Choose Network modes.
Select the correct option.
Now, which option is correct? Well that depends on how many options are in the list. There will either be 3 options, or more than 3 options. Unmodified phones will have only 3 options as fair as I know.
If you have three options, they are "Global" (Both modems on), "CDMA" (The one you want is the US), and "GSM/UMTS" (the one you want elsewhere).
If there are more than 3 options, for the US you want "CDMA / EvDo auto" for the US, or "GSM / WCDMA auto" elsewhere. "But wait", you ask, "What are the other options for?" Well, they let you choose to never use the 3G protocols, or only ever use the 3G protocols. They are not likely to be useful to most people, which is why the unmodified phone only shows 3 options.
So I would assume it would be safe to UnderClock the processor to 1.0 and get a little more battery life...and less heat.

Believe it or not, that would not really be underclocking. The processor turns its speed up or down based on temperature and use. TI calls this "Smart Reflex" technology. The processor in most laptops also does this, but Intel calls it "SpeedStep", and AMD calls it "PowerNow!".
The minimum speed for the Droid 2 Global is 300 MHz, and the maximum is 1.2 GHz. All you would be doing is telling the CPU not to go all the way to 1.2 GHz.
Actual under-clocking would imply the ability to run lower than 300MHz, which you probably don't want to do.
As others have pointed out the tool you use to set a minimum or maximum speed is called SetCPU. Unfortunately it only works on "rooted" devices, so you would need to "root" your phone first.

its actually a bit tricky, i use droid overclock by jrummy to overclock the processor using his !experimental! module which works on the d2g, and i have to use setcpu to actually take advantage of the overclock as it seems droid overclock doesnt actually set the cpu speeds i want on my d2g.

alright so download jrummys droid overclock and it sort of tells setcpu what the new max clock speed is, then use setcpu to set that new max speed?
edit: i cant figure it out. i went into droid overclock and changed the max freq under advanced/custom, saved the preset and applied it. nothing changed in setcpu.. :/ im not doin somethin right

Did you go into settings in droid overclock and enable the expirimental module? If you did, then set the frequency however high you want it, then in set cpu make a profile with the new frequencies. To get it to set I used quadrant score, don't know why but that seems to get it to work

so under CDMA settings it lists
Home Only
Automatic
of those 2 options none is default set....should I leave it alone or select on of the above

ok what exactly are your settings in droid overclock? and tell me like im a retard baby step by step what to do hahaha. i got it to do the overclock but it seems like the 2 programs might be interfering with each other it gets super laggy and doesnt like me.

Ok, open up do, press the menu button, in settings, there should be something about an experimental module, enable that. Then in the set cpu frequency thing, set the frequency to what you want. Make sure you don't have profiles for do, to ensure this, go into the menu with the bars for setting the min and max frequencies, you'll see a "profiles" menu. Open it and make sure profiles are not enabled. Then open up setcpu and go to the profiles menu. Enable profiles in setcpu and create a profile with the max frequency that you set, and make sure you set it to act when the phone is charging (make sure you're charging your phone). Then leave this and open up quadrant benchmark and run it. After this is done, your cpu frequency should have changed. I don't know why it only changes when I use quadrant, but after it changes you no longer need to use quadrant to have the frequencies changed. If its stable on the frequencies you set, then you can open up do and set the frequency class you have on boot.
Hope this helps.

I've been underclocked at 600mhz as of last night for a battery experiment. The phone shows no real signs of being slower except in the quadrant scores.
I hope its drastic. I've also shut down the gsm modem too.

@rusty815 I downloaded DO by jrummy and did the steps that you said but couldn't get it to work. Still max cpu says 1.2. I used set cpu to set a profile at 1.2 when charging/full, then quadrant standard to run a full benchmark. BUT nothing changed the max cpu settings. Am I doing something wrong? Do I set the max cpu through a droid overclock profile or some other setting?
Sent from my Rooted Droid 2 Global

You have to set the max cpu to be you're oveeclocked frequency, if you can't set you're overclocked frequency then something isn't right. When I change the frequency set, let's say to overclock to 1.3, tyen I can go to set cpu to go to 1.3, but it won't reach that speed until I run something cpu intensive I believe
Sent from my WICKED FAST Droid 2 Global with fission using XDA app

any of the speeds that setCPU shows you will be safe and stable. As mentioned above, you'd just be lowering the maximum available clock speed. I found 1000 felt just as fast as 1.2, though the quadrant scored dropped from ~1700 to ~1550. Even 800 feels indistinguishable, while quadrant scores drop to the 1200s. Need for Speed still runs snappy, though.

It is my understanding that those options really only make a difference in really old 3GGP2 (i.e. CDMA series) phones. With modern phones the system called a Preferred Roaming List is used in preference to that setting.
The PRL lists what towers your phone can roam on (i.e. those which Verizon has a roaming agreement). Please note that Verizon has agreements for free roaming with some US networks, which are part of Verizon's "extended network", and are not considered roaming for billing purposes under most plans, but is still technically roaming according to 3GPP2 standards.
The PRL also has an option as to what to do with towers that are not on the list. Most providers set the do not connect option.
Some (mostly tiny) providers though leave the option set to connect if there are no towers on the list in range. AIUI, that is the only case where the option you found has any meaning. The Home only option would not connect to those towers despite the PRL option, while the Automatic would.
For your purposes it really makes no difference, as I'd be shocked to find that Verizon's PRL was set to allow connections to unknown towers.

hi rusty815,do you see any significant improvement on the battary life?

Yeah, I can get a full day worth of batterylife now, before it would last me about 5 hours or so

Mytouch 4g Setcpu Optimization

So I've been searching the forums for a good thread on optimizing setcpu for specifically the Mytouch 4G. I couldn't find one so after i read up on it i created this profile. The tweaks that I've found make this run very fast and gets me easily 18 hours of battery life, and that is with moderate usage. These setting should work for most if not all devices. I don't get any real noticeable lag even when turning the screen on. I'm Using SetCPU 2.1.0 on a Grankin01 Kernel on a Stock ROM, and I'm also using "Autokiller Memory Optimizer" using moderate preset. Hopefully people will post there profiles anyway here it is.
Here is the thread for the Kernel I'm usinghttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876848
and here is a link for setcpu basics.

Alright here are my most recent setting I've been running.
I get around 20 hours of battery life on my phone with moderate use my set CPU settings are
Overclocked to 1.5 ghz minimum 245 ghz
Battery below 30% Max 1 ghz min 245 ghz
Screen off max 245 ghz min 245 ghz
Latest Cyanogen mod Alpha 7.0
I use max 1113 min 245 scaling on demand...screen off min 245 max 350

Pretty sure this is in the wrong place. I guess you read up on everything except where would an appropriate place to post this be.

Have mine set at 76800-1113600 on demand and I demand a lot and average about 8hrs. CM7, zinx kernel, with superpower.
I've been trying to get profiles and triggers down except I use CPU tuner inserted of setcpu. Is it possible to over clock yet still save battery? I doubt that somehow lol. If anyone can post full settings that save battery but still runs well I'd appreciate it. Ill copy one of you guys.
Questions though. What is all the governor stuff like performance, conservative, on demand, etc? What are the thresholds? What are the min max standards? Like if I have 300 and 1500, which does it user and why? Those are the only things I can't grasp

Check out this link it has all you'll need to know http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/210253-setcpu-guide.html
What you want is your device to throttle based on the load being put on it. When you aren't doing much i.e. reading a text it should be clocked at 245760 for example because that's not a demanding task. and versely when you play a graphics intensive app or something, it should use just over the maximum amount of cpu power needed to run the app so the app runs smooth. but wont waste battery by overclocking to 1708800 when only a speed of 1017600 is needed. For this i use "conservative" on SetCPU because it will allow more customization.
My advanced settings for SetCPU are as follow. i haven't use CPU Tuner but hopefully it's similar.
Sample Rate you want kinda low 200000 is what i have and i don't get much if any lag.
Up Threshold is at what percentage of processor usage that the clock speed is increased. for me its set to 60. in other words at 60% load on the processor it will start to increase the clock speed.
Down Threshold is the load percentage where the clock speed will be reduced. i have mine set to 33.
Ignore Nice Load will just ignore nice processes. This includes system i believe. i have mine set to 0.
Grabbed this from a mac forum but it should apply.
"A process's priority is determined with a complex formula that includes what the process is doing and how much CPU time the process has already consumed. A special number, called the nice number or simply the nice, biases this calculation: the lower a process's nice number, the higher its priority, and the more likely that it will be run."
Frequency Step is how much of a jump the CPU will take to meet the load. mine is set low, (12) because most processes and apps wont need a whole lot of boost to run smoothly. For my device on average it will be under 768000 which is what you want and is where the battery saving really comes in. Because the CPU is under-clocked most the time its using a lot less battery but is still running everything smoothly.
A lot of people set there devices to ondemand because it's, "very responsive." although true its responsiveness comes from big steps in clock speed as opposed to the small ones that will most likely get the same job done. i.e. a clock speed of 902400 is more then enough to run the process quickly ondemand will jump to 1708800 to handle the same task.
copied from the above link at android forums.
" * ondemand - Available in most kernels, and the default governor in most kernels. When the CPU load reaches a certain point (see "up threshold" in Advanced Settings), ondemand will rapidly scale the CPU up to meet demand, then gradually scale the CPU down when it isn't needed.
* conservative - Available in some kernels. It is similar to the ondemand governor, but will scale the CPU up more gradually to better fit demand. Conservative provides a less responsive experience than ondemand, but can save battery.
* performance - Available in most kernels. It will keep the CPU running at the "max" set value at all times. This is a bit more efficient than simply setting "max" and "min" to the same value and using ondemand because the system will not waste resources scanning for the CPU load. This governor is recommended for stable benchmarking.
* powersave - Available in some kernels. It will keep the CPU running at the "min" set value at all times.
* userspace- A method for controlling the CPU speed that isn't currently used by SetCPU. For best results, do not use the userspace governor."
Please post in General section, not dev.
Well i changed my setting a little to be a bit more responsive and i haven't noticed a increase in battery usage. I set my max speed to 1516800 and min to 368640 and its running quite nicely.
Anyone else getting good result with the conservative setting?

Frequency rules saves do save a lot of battery. Combine with undervolting and memory optimizations and you'll get big saves. But no setcpu is solely for cpu settings.
Whats the most stable speed to run this at?
So far i haven't had any stability issues on the Grankin01 Kernel. They ironed out most the stability issues in the Kernel its self. I do however keep my main profile around 1708800 - 1516800, generally 1516800, and min is set to 368640 and I've had no problem not even a signal freeze or crash. I've also run at 1708800 for most of the day plugged in and no issues other then heat. So i think is up to mostly prefrence.
I'm using a stock rom with bloatware removed and as i mentioned the Grankin01 1.7 OC Kernel.
Here is what I'm talking about. Sometimes the auto detect or something is wrong and I get this screen instead of the one you get. I don't understand why. I change ROMS a lot and I don't know if it is ROM specific or not. I'm currently on the cm7 preview from Zinx. Although I have seen it on other ROMS also as I posted before. Here is a pic.
Ignore the dropcap2 as I had just used it to take the picture.

Looks like from your screen shot that the profile SetCPU is using is on On demand, interactive or some default. What Kernel are you using? that may be the issue. If not a kernel issue. Then it may be a issue with CM7 and how SetCPU interacts with it. try disabling all your profiles and make sure that your main profile is for sure set to conservative.
Nothing else make a backup and try a different Kernel. Grankin01 has a few great ones and even a CM7 kernel with tunes and tweaks. As well as Gorilla. but id try the CM7 Kernel Grankin01 has first my buddy is running it and hasn't had problems. Just make you do a full backup to avoid a FUBAR situation.

Optimal CPU OC Settings for Droid X

I'm using SetCPU on my rooted Droid X and I wanted to see if anyone could help me find the best CPU settings for my OC'd DX. Right now I have it set at 800 MHz minimum and 1000MHz maximum with scaling on demand and 'Set on Boot' enabled.
Any guidance I could get on this would be greatly appreciated.
Battery life isn't an issue.
Thanks!
youre asking a really open ended question here bud
because what it comes down to is a multitude of factors
ie: what android OS youre using, what version, what rom, what programs you have to aid in overclocking, what do you use your droid x for on a regular basis, are you looking to tweak speed for mere benchmark results or to conserve power, do you game, etc etc etc.
youd have to give me more to go on bud
every phone is different also. i have the same setup as my phone on my friends, and he cant oc past 1.15 without hanging. personally, my highest profile in droid overclock is 1.25 ghz at 58vsel. and lowest 250mhz at around 28vsel
by the way on on liberty 2.0.1 with a theme and a few build.prop tweaks

setcpu

any good sensation guides for getting setcpu to work?
thanks
Setcpu should be self explanatory since we now have root. You set the frequency you want the device to operate at. That being said if you are looking to OC then you need a kernel capable of overclocking
but what option do i select when i first start it as the sensation is not listed
I too would like to know.

i think that there soon will be a update. so that we can select our sensation directly. but till than you have to select the tegra2 device.
thank you very much
decided to use this custom freq list that goes upto 1.19ghz so just under the sensations max threshold
put into root of sd and select the custom option

Thanks but this is stock, overclocking is making it do more than it should.
Thanks for the file tho, i'll modify that and see what i can get out of it.
Cheers for the building block
Went on with increments of 38400 however, even though the slider will show 1.5 the actual speed is still restricted to 1.18ghz
Bit weird, i've got no experience of creating these set cpu scripts so i really don't know what's the matter with it, i think the next increment needs to be a different number, as before 38400 it was something like 19000 roughly.

the speed is restricted by the kernel so you would need a Kernel that supports over clocking.. these should be everywhere shortly now most have s-off, I just used the stock for now to manage power i,e when screen is off, use 1/4 of the cpu (saves battery)

[Q] How to change clock speed on stock Verizon Samsung GS3

I have two stock Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3's. Both are running System Tuner. Neither CPU is running at speeds above 1GHz, despite the fact that each should be capable of 1.5GHz. I've tried increasing clock speed using ST and am unsuccessful. I've rooted one using the procedure at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439, and am still unable to get the CPU to run at anything above 1GHz. I've installed SetCPU, and still no success. I select 1500Hz, but SetCPU max remains at 1026Hz, even with "set at boot" selected and after restarts.
Questions:
- is this a limitation imposed by VZW or the kernel running on the phone?
- is it considered "overclocking" just to get the CPU to run at speeds higher than what it currently does (i.e. 1GHz) even if those higher speeds (up to 1.5GHz) are within the advertized specs of the CPU?
- what is needed to get past this? Is it even possible to increase clock speeds using the stock kernel/ROM, or is another kernel or ROM needed?
Thanks.

That's exactly what it was. I was only checking the governor settings with the CPU and never checked or thought about the Android level "Power Saver" mode. Once I unchecked the CPU box under "Power Saver", I was able to get much better speeds out of the CPU.
Thank you very much.

[Q] XT1032 CPU Frequencies won't stick

That's the problem. No matter what rom I flash, what kernel I use or what app I install to manage cpu frequencies, they just won't stick. My CPU is always at 1190 MHz Min / 1190 MHz Max, and when I try to change the min value, it'll only remain changed for a few seconds, then it just goes back to 1190.
Also, when I use a CPU manager app to see every core individual frequency, immediately the third and fourth core go off when I open said app.
I don't know if my device is defective. I haven't dropped it or anything, if I need to say it. Please tell me if this happened to somebody else or what can I do. Thanks everyone.
Qualcomm hard-limited the max CPU frequency in the Snapdragon 400. At least the variant used in the Moto G. You cannot overclock it.
I don't want to overclock it, I want to underclock it. At least I want to decrease the min frequency.
Ah, though I assume the same applies. The SoC won't listen to / obey requests to change those.
I have heard that it is just a visual issue. In fact if you use trickster mod or similar, you will see that most of the time the processor is not running at 1190

I think so, that sounds more realistic.
Thanks for the replies, I have found a solution after all, it was all about that thing called "mpdecision". When I turned it off with a particular CPU manager, I was able to change my settings without any problem.
