i've read the other threads about people not wanting to talk about it because thieves who steal phones change imei numbers to bypass an imei block when you report the phone stolen.
Well the reason for this imei "spoofing" would be for the ATT customers. They force smartphone/iphone users into having to pay for a data plan. That's 25 bucks for 2 gigs and $10 more for any gig over. Forget tethering and all that. The people who had unllimited data plans BEFORe this was enacted STILL have unlimited data to tether and watch videos all they want on their smartphones WITHOUT a 2 gb cap.
Solution? Here's what i've come up with (a theory/model).
A rom (like clockwork ) could implement a imei spoofer at boottime. You can only put in one imei number to change it to at the time of installation of the clockwork mod. It would be locked down though so you can only switch it back to the real one or that other one. So if you uninstall/reinstal/wipe the phone you can't change the imei again.
That one imei number that you put in should be an older phone you have (nokias, lg shine, aka anything that ISNT a smartphone). Everyone has older phones lying around before you upgraded to a smartphone. Just use that one and either destroy the phone or just make sure no sim goes into the dumbphone imei your using. Then you can get the original medianet unlimited available to non smartphones
What do you think of this?
also as of now im thinking of just getting the 200 mb , turning off all data connections (power control widget) permanently and just use wifi. ATT won't let you actually turn off the data plan (thus another need for this imei spoofing/changing)
I think it is absolute nonsense. Honestly..

nah.. the whole goal is to get ATT to switch their plans. Tmobile, verizon, everyone else has a real unlimited plan. PErhaps just limit the iphone users if its really a network problem.
Since they don't want to offer unlimited internet, this would be the only way to. People would do it the same reason they jailbreak iphones, root androids, etc.
also note:
"The new top-ranging data plan is called DataPro and gives users a monthly cap of 2GB for $25/month. Once customers fly past their monthly cap, AT&T will charge an additional $10 for another gigabyte of data. For example, if a customer uses 2.01GB of data, you'll be charged $35."
Have you ever considered the possibility that you might jeopardize someone else's profile by using his IMEI ?

No because You are supposed to use only imei's you own. Old phones in shoe boxes, closets, etc. I dunno about you guys, but my mom/dad/myself/others i know have always had old backup phones or phones they just keep in boxes when they get others. In fact I have a couple blackberries, palm treo 600/650, nokias, lgs & the such lieing around now.
Just like macchanger on linux allows you to change your mac, a imei changer at boot time could switch to that one so you could save money on your bill (regain the ability to disable all att internet instead of being FORCED to pay for internet if you have a smartphone... or just pay for unlimited)
Both options IMHO are better than the 200 mb cap, and 2 gb cap they offer
I see.. well in that case i misunderstood. There's a good IMEI tool on berryreview for these purporses.. but still.. not a big fan about the idea.. however, it should work

I thought it was illegal to do that, but will this let an android work on regular plans?
It is illegal as far as i know, since you violate the contract you made to a certain IMEI.
Plus not everything that is illegal is negative - sometimes there is nothing but a protection for consumers behind.

If you can afford so many devices, you might be able to pay for a decent plan too.. that's an advice with good intention..
Let me kn ow if anything comes of this as I am interested in hobnobbing this IM3I trickster. I have an older samsung Eternity that I have wanted to test and switch IM3I numbers with my Captivate.
Another thing that i was looking into but never went anywhere was ROMing a Galaxy S so it would work WITHOUT a SIM card. simply using the WIFI only "off the grid"
It does not seem too impossible at all and I dont understand whay this is not been looked into.
I cant run my Captivate without a SIM or I get major NAGing
I'm affraid you'd have to google yourself, since I don't want to put myself into trouble.
But there are tons of tools for that out there...

Yeah. The one I have now is an aria though (they were giving them away free in exchange for a 2 year extension). I should have done my research first about ATT's new policies. Sure 2 gb isnt the end of the world, but I would love the ability to choose no internet at all. That way I can just use wifi. Since I am forced into paying for some kind, I would love to pay for unlimited so I can tether or use it however way I want. They charge $20 or $25 on top of the original $25 to tether (so 45-50 bucks) and you still have the same 2gb cap. nomore bandwidth although you paid 20-25 bucks more. That is not right.
I will check that app out. If push comes to shove though, I will just keep the 2 gb and just keep data off (thanks to cyanogen!) and just use wifi. the $25 for the 2 gb is less than the $30 I paid for unlimited on a normal phone (which they just removed 2 days ago when it sensed the aria)

I had a Blackberry Bold with the original $30 unlimited data plan before I got my Captivate. After I got the Captivate I just had to call up AT&T and they transferred the plan to my Captivate's IMEI number with no problem.
The reason I'm researching this is for when I get my Motorola Atrix next month. I'm going to transfer my unlimited plan to the Atrix's IMEI number but change the IMEI on my Captivate to the Atrix's IMEI number also. That way when I use the Captivate as a backup phone I would just move my SIM card over and not have any data network problems.

So, if I were to switch the imei and device id I could name T-Mobile think I'm using my old note 5? My kid broke his and I can't get it replaced because it's now been too long. If I can change the s4 and spoof the note 5 for a day I can get it replaced. Would this work?

Hey guys, I need to cancel my data plan on my account with AT&T, and the rep told me b/c it's a smart phone it requires a data plan with it.
I installed that one program that disables network connections so no data is transferred at all, but I'd still be paying the $30/month.
Does anyone know of a program to blind the IDMI or w/e number so that AT&T doesn't know what phone I'm using? I mean, yea I can just put my SIM in another phone and use that and cancel the plan just fine. I'd LIKE to continue using the fuze as a normal phone b/c it has wifi and is an all-around better phone than say a moto razor. This way I can call from a razor, cancel the plan, and put the SIM back in the Fuze and according to my account online it won't know I've switched back to the Fuze.
Ideas? Thanks.
tell the rep that he/she is a liar and a jerk. You can remove your dataplan. the only phone out there that requires you to have a dataplan is the iphone. get yourself a rep that actually knows what they're talking about.
Last time they told my gf that her only option for txt mssging is to pay for the unlimited and i kept telling her you can get 200 for $5 and the rep says no, I told her to get another rep and that rep set it up for her.
You actually do need a data plan for any smartphone, if you upgrade to another smart phone theres no way to get out of paying $30 for data

I have to agree with mputtr. Keep trying until you get a rep that will do it for you. By the way, I've upgraded twice over the past 3 1/2 years with ATT smartphones, and I was never required to get a data plan. I still don't have one to this day.

Not true anymore, since September 6, it's now AT&T policy that every smartphone requires the $30 data plan, not just the iphone (BBs included). The only way to get out of this is if you had a smartphone BEFORE that date and either didn't have a data plan or had a cheaper one and therefore you're grandfathered in. You could try to find a rep to do it for you, and even in the rare case you do find one, once AT&T matches your IMEI, they're gonna put the data plan back on and possibly charge you for trying to circumvent the policy.

He's right. Though, how long do you think it will take for them to match up the IMEI's? Because I've switched my SIM through several Winmo phones (shh, off the record) and never been asked about it.
I'm hoping AT&T will be lazy because I really don't like this idea

Yeah, it's either hit or miss I guess. At times my Fuze will go unnoticed after using a dumbphone, and then all of a sudden it will show up in OLAM, but I've had the Medianet plan on the Fuze forever, so no worries
But from what I hear AT&T is more aggressive in searching for people, so all I can say is good luck!
I've got three phones on family data & family texting... $60 total for all three. Fuze, BJII and Samsung Eternity. I want to upgrade fuze to Tilt2 & BJII to better smartphone, but I don't want to get jacked by AT&T forcing a move to data plans. Anyone know if you can switch back thought the website once you've signed up for data plan?
I've had a Tilt forever. I need to uprade, hopefully to a HTC Pure, however already having a family plan with 5 phones, I don't need or want a data plan o top of that expense. Is there a way of using an unlocked phone to avoid the ATT Nazis? Thanks for any help. Hoping that I won't have to go back to an iPaq Pocket PC.
the only real way of doing it is after upgrading the phone wait a month or so while paying for data then put the sim in a old razr or something and go online change your IMEI and then call and say u lost the new one and have them take data off.
then just swap sims later and hope they dont notice
Here's a quick fix that always works: (I've done this many, many times)
1. Get yourself a dumbphone, i.e. non-winmo/BB/iPhone devices like those Nokia's or SE's
2. Get the IMEI# of the dumbphone ready because the rep would want to register that with your account.
3. Call the rep from the dumbphone, and tell him/her that you're NOT gonna use your smartphone anymore and that you would want the data plan to be removed.
OR
This would also be the chance for you to downgrade your data plan to the cheaper $15/mo MediaNET, most dumbphones will be eligible for that.
4. Hang up and put back the SIM card into the smartphone again, voila.
The trick is to NEVER call the rep from the smartphone as they're able to detect your IMEI from the network.
Good luck.
Hey guys, I'm new to Android and
just coming off a feature phone. I want to keep the Captivate, but can't justify spending so much on the data plan. Is there any way to fool At&t into thinking I don't have a smart phone? I've heard some things about people messing with apn's.

Long and the short of it is, you can "try" but good luck. IMO its worth the money as the Captivate is a data hungry device. ATT tracks phones by IMEI numbers and as soon as they detect your phone theyll add a data plan for you.
BTW if you actually get through and are able to have ATT block a data plan for you good luck with the data charges .....Unless your always connected to wifi you will most likely get some charges.
IMO if you get a smartphone its worth the money for a data plan, if you dont ahve one unless you are around wifi it almost defeats the purpose.

So basically you want all the features of a smartphone without having to pay? Don't we all.
I understand where you're coming from. Even the "lower" cost of $15 a month is $180 a year. The way cellular plans and data plans work in this country is absolutely ridiculous. They are expensive.
But what are you going to do? It boils down to if you want it, you gotta pay for it.
I am a person that travels the world. I used to think the same way, that this that or the other is way expensive. Until I started doing buisness abroad. Data plans in other countries are more expensive than ours, less bandwidth and restricted usage. So yeah, as much as I hate to have to pay, it could be worse.
One way is to grab the IMEI of a non smart phone and get someone at AT&T to input it manually. That will only last till you need to contact support for any reason. Then you are back to square one. Sooo, if you want to play you will more and likely have to pay.
My friend had the same thing. When he we went to the att store, they said it's absolutely mandatory to have the data plan as it is with the iPhone. My friend told them that he had a blackberry and it's mandatory for a data plan and he was able to block it by caling in head quarters. Then another guy made up some bull **** and said "after september 1st, 2009, we no longer block internet to internet required phones". Doesn't make sense, but what ever. We explained that to him, but he said "well ATT usually gives a 1 time courtesy". The next morning, he calls ATT headquarters and askes to block the internet. took about 10 minutes on the phone, and it was completely blocked from here on out.

There's a lot more to do with smartphones than use a data plan. My first year with a Touch HD I didn't have a data plan. Finally decided to get one some months ago and I've maybe checked out 5 websites. That's all I've done with it.
So I can totally understand why some people could care less if they had a data plan and would rather not pay for something they aren't going to use.
I don't see the point in this. If you don't want to pay the $30 a month dataplan, then just buy a normal cell phone and an iPod Touch.
nah the capti can still be pretty useful without data in my opinion.
Also, you're best bet is to call them and ask to talk to higher ups. Be honest and tell them what you want. If they say no, say well i guess i'll have to find a service provider that is more understanding. See how they grovel after that. And if they don't do it for you, call again.
Many of the apps and games dont require a data plan, so if you purchase them directly from the publisher and sideload them onto your phone, you'll be saving that 15-30 bucks a month. It's all really about what you want out of the device. I'd rather have an android w/o a data plan than no android at all..
I have heard if you call with a flip phone and say you lost the other phone, then you can cancel the data and have them put a block on it. I have heard of success doing it that way. But it is worth it to pay the data IMHO.

This is absolutely ridiculous that you guys are brainwashed into thinking a smartphone is useless without data. It is not, my brother wants a smartphone and he's mostly at home around wifi. But most of all he wants android and to play the games and emulators that you can use on the phone. He doesn't want to hunk around a gba, psp, ds, etc. Just wants a music/video playing, high quality camera, video game, ebook reading, app installing mini computer. Doesn't need data and some people don't like iOS.
The only reason I need data mostly is to use google maps. Thats practically 80% of my data usage.
Hey guys I just wanted to ask one question before I actually buy the desire hd. When i got my Tilt 2 one year ago, I told them I didnt want a data plan and they told me it was ok because i have been a customer for 5 years. So question is are they going to force me to get a data plan when i get the desire hd. thanks in advance.
you cannot get it without the data plan, this is ATT's policy now. that said, android OS works much differently, and not having a data plan would probably not work simply because of the way android OS works. you can try it though, curious to hear results...
from what i was told in the past, if you get a cool rep at the store, which i have come across in my area.

Once that person makes their first phone call with their phone, the network registers their IMEI and puts them on the correct data plan.
Nice try though.
The ATT policy aside, because android uses data for so much, I doubt you could even set up the phone unless near WiFi. When out and about away from WiFi, so many parts of the OS reach out for data that it would be very different than what one might realize. It's not like the old windows mobile days where data can just be shut off. But this is why I'm curious to see the results though.
I called att support and they can block data on your line so you never get any data ever, you could turn off data plan that way

2 things, you can't drop a data plan as far as i know with at&t, they are changing stuff every week right now however trying to get some sort of edge it seems.
I turned on an old tilt this past week for my kid and they no longer require a data plan it seems on older PDA's. It was a ridiculous rule. So i have data blocked on it and he uses the wifi. Finally one tiny issue solved.
More good news.. (remember you get a different answer with every rep)
I was able to turn on the 2gig plan for 25 instead of the normal $30 its been.
And i was told i can turn on a 4 gig plan now for 40 with 250mb roll overs @ 15$ per.
This is news to me ive only seen the 200mb and the 2 gb plan up till now. Tmobi is like 5 gb a month (unlimited) so its nice to see this (since i swear the 4g is eating up data on me)
I've heard from my aunt, who "worked" for att, that if you were grandfathered in, since the old days where you didn't need a Data plan for a Smartphone, you can still get one without a plan. (I remember my first WM Smartphone was bought this way)
You just have to be sure to specify this point, that you are Grandfathered in.
Since she knows this, Her Son, bought a BlackBerry for his daughter, and insisted on no Data plan, the Rep. allowed it because he was Grandfathered in.
I intend to Buy an Inspire, later this week, using my Mom's upgrade; she actually uses a Blackberry, without a Data Plan too! ;D
It should work the same, my dad says we should be Great-Grandfathered in, cause we were there when it was still Cingular and the First $10.00 Unlimited Data Plans came out.
As far as I know it doesn't work that way. You are already grandfathered in because they are allowing you to use a smart phone without data. But as soon as you get a new phone you will automatically be forced to upgrade to a data plan. My wife tried the same thing, she had a blackberry with no data but when she got a new phone they automatically gave her a data plan.

The only way to get something like this to work is to use a device from another carrier not already on at&t. Even then they may still nail you depending on what apn you are using.

Ha Ha yes it happened to me and it didn't even take a full 24hrs
3pm had $10 unlimited and by 6am the next morning, I was switched back to a gay tiered plan.
Anybody who wants to try this, just save yourself some time and use the iPhone 2G trick. Worked for me.
you can get it to "stick" if you have an older grandfathered plan. If you have a new plan, you can make them change it back by just calling them, and they will switch it back to the medianet plan, as long as you have a different IMEI that is NOT a smartphone. They will also back date it to the date their system changed to the more expensive plan. BUT, you will have to keep doing this over and over again. I actually had them "fix" my account so it never changes, and it doesnt matter what phone I use. You will have to get to the technical department, and have them do it. Their plans are based on bytes, not speed. So they cannot charge you for the same amount of bytes, only based on your device. If they had different speeds, ala internet service for your home, then it wouldnt be an issue. But since their data plans are only based on bytes, the fact that they have a "unlimited" plan only makes sense for everyone to utilize it, and it matters not what device you use, because a byte is a byte is a byte. They dont provide different upload and download speeds in their data rate plans. I have been with the company since it was originally PacBell, so I have been able to get them to do certain things that arent normally done for customers.
i know what you're talking about with making it stick. you can either use a smartphone NOT from ATT, or call in and give them an IMEI for ANY phone not from ATT (ie unlocked unbranded nokia) or any other phone you have lying around (ie tmobile). They will then lock this into their system as the IMEI for your data plan and you won't be switched over. I used this trick for 2 years with no issues, switching back and forth between my e72 and my tilt2 every day or two (i know, im odd). i watched my data consumption and always stayed under 2 gb because i heard of people getting caught this way, but i'm pretty certain that if you have tech support 'lock in' your IMEI of a dumb phone/non-att phone, you're SET.
unfortunately, i had to upgrade to the 2gb data plan when i purchased my inspire (they wouldn't give me the subsidized rate unless i did this) and my dad got pissed at me for being a cheat too lol

55gb I'm sure they would never notice that
Let me get to the point. I just got my G2x yesterday, swapped everything from my N1. On WiFi, np, I can access anything thru the internet. W/o WiFi, I still get MMS and can trick my phone in getting short data, like my current weather in a widget, etc. but when a browser is pulled up, it tells me I have the wrong data plan and I have to update.
Now, I know exactly what this is, my question is more if there is a way of circumnavigating it? I have the same plan I had w/my G1, which was just before the data plans changed and I don't want to have upgrade to one of thier new limited-unltd AND pay more on top of it. I was planning on rooting it anyway as I have my past to Androids (thanks by the way XDA, w/o this site, I couldn't have done it), but was waiting for CM7. I know there are several great ROMs out there though, many more than when I originally flashed my G1 and if by rooting it, I would work around whatever is relaying my phn info.
Oh, and so everyone knows, I haven't updated my imei yet w/TMo, but I've never experienced this before even w/o my imei being updated.
Anyway, hope my rambling has at least stayed near the tracks of reason and someone can give me an answer. If I have to update my service then I have to, I just don't like being "forced" to , makes me think AT&T and I would LOOOOOOVE to get around this!
Thx all...
Call T-Mobile and tell them what you're seeing. They'll probably first tell you that you'll have to upgrade, or pay more. Tell them that is unacceptable and you'd like to be grandfathered in.
See if that works, I've heard that some people who used T-Zones back in the day are grandfathered in at $5.99 for unlimited web. I'm not sure how valid this may be, but try your luck with T-Mobile and post back here what the outcome was.
I'll give it a try, but I'm going to give hope a chance and hold my breath hoping that maybe, just maybe, this can be circumnavigated by freezing and/or removing some sort of pre-installed mothership progam hidden in one of the many bloatware by TMo...
im grandfatherd with the 6 dollar tzones but it cut off on me last week like when i go to the web it tells me my plans not sufficent for it so idk what to do but im not gettin a data plan
If you are on T-Zones I really doubt you will be able to keep it. What I would do is call retentions and try to get them to put the grandfathered $20 Android plan on there so at least you get it for a little bit less.
Pretty much the same thing I'm getting, it redirects me to web2go.com and tells me I have to update my data plan.
Don't get me wrong, if the TMo commercial chick dressed up like a dominatrix, I would make it my screensaver among other things, it doesn't mean I long for my provider to act the role...
Did you renew your contract?? I am still using the $25 plan I got when I had my G1. At some point (can't remember if I was still on G1 or Nexus One) but I had to switch to the "Android Data Plan" instead of the G! plan (to get Visual Voicemail). My price remained the same, just the name changed. But, I didn't renew my contract when I bought this phone.
Nope, no contract.

Do you know the name of the actual plan you have? I am a Tech Care rep and the only time you would need to change from a grandfathered plan is if you had a generic smartphone plan instead of an android specific plan.
You may have to upgrade to the android specific, but there are ways around paying the higher cost. Retentions is a good way, got a guy the $20 buck plan yesterday to match his loyalty Blackberry internet plan through retentions.
Glad I'm on Simple Mobile can't beat the price

True but good luck with any customer service or tech support.
I just got my G2x today coming from my N1. I was able to keep my Myfaves + unlimited android data, in fact it was recommended i keep it because it has a 5gb cap and the new plan would be 2gb

Ive been with them since it was available ,never had to call customer support and never had an issue...
as far as i have tried the t-zones or t-web plan will not work, i had to finally ditch mine after 7 years, i did call t-mobile and asked to speak to a loyalty rep. which i then explained that i was not going to pay more than 20 for a plan with a new 2 year upgrade, which did not take to much convincing they gave me the unlimited Android data plan for 20 bucks a month. Trust me i did not want to let go of my 9.99 plan which worked great with my HD2 with 3g speeds, but for an extra 10 bucks a month its worth not having to worry about will it work and trying to find the right settings.
Yeah, I'm sure I'm going to have to buckle as well. Going to flash the CM build that was just released. After that, go the loyalty route I guess.
Oh, and...
GO POKES!
So can anyone confirm you have to upgrade from the g1 plan to take advantage of 4h data speeds?

That is just a name change - has no effect on speeds.
Still on my "Android Unlimited" for $25 (after changing from "G1 Plan" for VVM).

Which is great, but if one day you need it, they don't have a contact number/e-mail listed on their website and T-Mobile can't help you.
Well, I added the "data throttling removal" patch because at least a few of the posts sounded as if by using this Paul O'Brien patch they circumnavigated the need to change plans. Alas, to no avail, although now, I shouldn't have to worry about data throttling should I downgrade to the (limited) unlimited plan.
It appears than my Holy Grail continues to elude me! At this point, I would even just accept some Knights who say "NI!" I'd trade a shrubbery for a resolution...
