I'm considering a move to the Nexus S from a Desire HD, but I find plain Android rather dull Are there any decent phonebook apps that add a bit of dazzle?
I know of Phonebook 2.0, but for some reason that wont download at the moment on the Nexus S.
I'm also trying Contapps which is kind of nice.
You could throw dialers into the mix. I'm using Dialer One at the moment, anything better out there?
Are there any other alternatives?
Youlu is a nice application ;-)

I agree with Youlu. Its my default, I had to get a new dialer as stock one would FC for me if I set LCD Density to anything lower then 200, But now new rom seems to have fixed stock dialer problems but I'm still sticking to Youlu as its just a better dialer

I'm looking for a sense dialer app (or similar). Basically, one that will query contacts AND the call log as you dial. Do any exist?
don't think so. but you can search for NubDialer in the market - made by Wysie. Or you can also try the dialer one. it's something quite similar to sense dialer.

Dialer One doesn't query the call log or tell you the number you are calling (e.g., mobile, work, etc.). I just checked and NubDialer doesn't either.
Re: Sense dialer app (or similiar)
has anyone found an app to do this yet?

current version of dialer one does all these things.
Re: Sense dialer app (or similiar)
the search widget does this too. as you type it searches your contacts.

This isn't accurate. If I called 1234567890 a week ago, but it isn't in my phonebook, I cannot type 456 in DialerOne and have it retrieve that record. He has thrown in a new "group by call log" which will sort the query results by most frequently called, but that is it.

Right... but again - not looking for contacts... Looking for call log.
me too.
i tried "dailer one" and its not bad. it searches for contacts while you dial. but i dont like the ui.
i would prefer something more sense like...
does somebody know where to find it?
maybe if somebody could pull it from a sense rom?
EDIT: actually the ui of dialer one is far better if you set the the system wallpaper as background.
i think dialer one will become my phone app;-)

I'm working on making a theme to sense dialer, I will make a thread for it today
As all HTC apps need & use HTC's framework, none of them can be used on a normal Android ROM. The only way is installing a Sense ROM. But as people told you, Dialer One & NubDialer are the best dialers out there.
Is there any dialer app which resembles the SE 2.1 dialer app (with dialer, call log, contacts and favourites, and allows to add new contacts directly, etc)?
I have just found Youlu. Looks nice. Any other ideas?
I am using "Dialer One" and it is good.
youlu address book......it's the besttttttttttttt
I installed youlu yesterday and today have deleted all other phonebook/dialer/calllog applications. Youlu no doubt is excellent and has a cool widget too.
I also like the youlu dialer, but there is one problem.
Because I wanted to fix my lowres contact pictures, I have linked all pictures to my facebook account and until now I have not found any app that can show these pics.
I don't want to change the pictures for +200 contacts again to use this app.
Is there anyone who has found a different dialer app that can show the facebook pictures ?
grtz

I'm enjoying Youlu too. However, I have a problem. When I dial a number ou select a contact in it, it opens SE blue background dialer. Should it be like that?

You can set the facebook pictures directly to your contacts with syncmypix. Then every phonebook will show them. The app also has a high res setting.
Cheers

No, it shouldn't be like that.
Delete the defaults for Youlu (in Settings->Applications->Management) and repeat the action, when prompted select Youlu as default.

I tried, but didn't work. Any clue? My x10 is a 2.1 version...Keep using the low resolution picture when I dialed a number, I didn't have the same problem back in 1.6
is there a dialer which allows conference calling my old tilt2 i could have 6 callers at once.

Uninstalled, reinstalled, but there was no option to choose it as default... Did I miss anything?
Being old skool, i'd like a answer/ reject button not a slider like on stock 2.1. Is there a way of doing this. I currently run Dialer One and its awesome, just not the answer slide bar...

2.1 dialer is the best, I really don't understand why they abandoned it.
The dailer on the note is not very good esp compared to htc's are there any better ones? The way it looks up contacts and allows you to set default phone numbers for people for example seems very clunky.

I tried several dialers, so far I like TouchPal the best.
I'm having the same issue, but how do you make these alternative dialers the default, so it shows when you try to call someone?
RocketDial is quite good as well
I use the MIUI dialer, Its called exDialer; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329172

A dialer is just an app. You need to replace your phone shortcut with a shortcut to whichever dialer you just installed.

Was using Go Dialer EX, Touch Pal, Contapps, but have downloaded exDialer and find it the best. It's able to clear missed calls in notification and uses default contacts to adding new contacts or editing contacts. Wothte the dialers I had discrepancies between the 2 contacts databases with regards to linked contacts and edited contacts.

Which dialer allow for video call like Samsung dialer ?
How is the exDialer able to clear missed call notification? Doesn't work for me.
I vote for DW Dialer - i used to use dialer one, but it got a bit slow then i found DW Dialer (the free version does everything, the pay one just costs to much...)
Kicks ass on configurable options and does it all and looks nice on the note.
There's a little ergonomics issue with all these dialers. In the Galaxy Note stock dialer, when you make a search with the number pad, the options are listed just one line above the number pad, with a dropdown box in case there are multiple options. When you click, there's a new window that pops-up, which shows the contacts. These are all reachable with your thumb when you use only one hand.
When I utilize any other dialer, they put the matching names at the top of the screen listing them down. But I can't reach the top with single hand operation.
Would you know any other dialer with "easy reach"?
The s3 stock dialer is blazing fast,i have searched this forum but couldn't find any port to your note, so you guys please request for the Dev to take notice, yes the stock note dialer is crap, by any standards, slow n its not even optimised to your screen size

I prefer exDialer with the black theme, its free on the market so enjoy..........
Would someone be so kind as to share the People app apk that comes with vanilla ICS? (I hate the Samsung version of contacts app)
Thanks!

I found an alternative to the dialer, look at ex dialer on the "play" market (I really hate this new name, I wish Google go back to Android Market) and apply the ICS theme.
It looks and works great

I don't really want to start a war of the texting world. But what are your preferences for texting apps and why?
Hand cent, GO, etc.
Thanks all. Just want friendly discussion.

hate em all. only one I like is the stock android one. i do use handcent, but only for the emoji. if the stock sms app got an addon for that I would switch back in a heartbeat.

AOKP has a stock ICS SMS app that has Emoji. I love it.
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using XDA
Although it has a large footprint like Handcent, GoSMS is terrific for a lot of reasons. First, it has two plugin downloads for emoticons/Emojis. It comes with standard happy/sad/confused faces, but one plugin adds elaborate faces, symbols and icons (probably close to 300) and are much more detailed. The second plugin adds something like large vector art.
And some may be asking "how can my recipient get these things in their messages if they are not supported--or if one of these items turns the message into an MMS?
Well that's the most nifty thing about it. It had a service that is linked to the app which routes it around their servers and straight to your recipient as a data-based MMS. In other words, even if you cannot typically send MMS because your APN is wrong or whatever, this app makes sure your texts get through...essentially it's an SMS-over-IP service. Plus, your recipient does not need to have it installed.
Lastly GoSMS can be infinitely skinned. I am not sure what Handcent can do, but I use images for the background of my conversations list and my actual conversion (which can be customized for each recipient). It also scans all other apps for any fonts it can use, and offers them to be used as part of the UI..
Sent from my HTC One-S (rooted), stock ROM
I prefer GoSMS. I don't like the stock sms client and originally used Handcent until it started force closing all the time. If this had not start happening, I would probably still use handcent. GoSMS is highly customizable which I like.
I'm using the inverted AOSP Stuff out of this forum from he_stheone64. Because it's look very smart and clean for me and it's much easier to handle than this htc sense stuff..
thats my opinion why I had chosen them.
