how do i flash superuser via recovery mode? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was trying to install the superuser zip file from recovery onto my nexus s.
http://techie-buzz.com/mobile-news/complete-guide-to-rooting-nexus-s.html
This is the guide that i followed.
So my bootloader is unlocked.
I have pushed the recovery image over to the phone, but my recovery bootloader just looks the same.
Im guessing this is where it has failed?
PS when i type adb devices it said that no devices where found, but when i pushed the image it said that it pushed fine. any ideas?
PPS when i reboot into fastboot, it makes the sound that its connected, and PDA net is saying its connected but its not showing up under adb devices, and i cant see it in my task manager

Try following these instructions here.

No boot or recovery img

last night i flashed an update of clockwork mod through rom manager. i then went to do a back-up of my current rom. the phone re-booted to the fastboot mode and now says no boot or recovery img. when i scroll to recovery and click it, the phone reboots right back into the bootloader. i am trying to flash a new recovery through adb but i cant get anything to connect. when i do "adb devices" in the command prompt i get the daemon started and list of devices but there are no devices listed. "fastboot devices" does nothing either. i have the android sdk loaded onto c:\ and the drivers seem to be installed correctly. when i rooted the phone i used a different pc that i dont have access to now. i also used pdanet for the drivers so i have never had the google drivers set up correctly. i type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img and it says "cannot load recovery.img" i have downloaded the recovery-clockwork3.0.0.5-crespo.img to the "tools" folder and renamed it "recovery.img"
i have tried to explain everything i have done so far but i am sure there are some steps i have missed. i read some on odin and downloaded it but i am even more lost trying to figure that out. i really need some help here and i would appreciate anything i can get
when you're in bootloader, you're supposed to use "fastboot"
you cant flash a recovery using adb.
go into bootloader mode
fastboot devices
... if your device doesn't show up, then your drivers are not properly set up.. uninstall them and look for the sticky and reinstall your drivers using those set of instructions; assure your SDK is updated to support 2.3.X
when you get your device to appear in fastboot devices.
download clockwork recovery 3.0.2.5 (3.0.2.4 is buggy) or 3.0.0.5; 3.0.2.5 is found in dev forums; rename it to recovery.img
put it in /sdk/tools/
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
i guess i need help getting the device connected through fastboot. i have tried 5 times now to install the drivers verbatim to what the sticky says (using W0lv3r1n3's Great Windows Rooting Guide). adb command works and pulls up the adb help text. fastboot is still unrecognized by the command prompt. adb devices nor fastboot devices works. i have no idea what else to do. most of the stickies just graze over this part and have no trouble shooting guides.

if your device is unable to GET into bootloader mode... that wont get you anywhere.
when you plug your phone into the computer with the USB.. does that USB sound pop up? if it doesnt.. then its bricked.
ok i have fastboot devices seeing the device. but adb devices still wont see it. when i do fastboot flash recovery recovery.img it says cannot load recovery.img. i put the clockwork file in the tools folder renamed at recovery.img. do i leave it as a zip file though?
when i plug the usb in i dont hear a sound. the phone will only boot into "fastboot mode".
when i do fast boot devices i see "38328e03afbf00ec fastboot"

bootloader mode is for fastboot. you wont be using ADB to recover your device.
you unzip the file. it should be like: clockwork-recovery-version..blah blah blah.img
rename it to "recovery.img" assure that your "fastboot" appears as "fastboot.exe" and not just "fastboot." if it is "fastboot" you need to go into folder options and show extensions otherwise you'll be trying to flash "recovery.img.img" and SDK wont recognize it

Make sure you are typing the full file path, for example on my setup its "fastboot flash recovery c:\android\tools\recovery.img"
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
file extensions are being shown and it is named recovery.img. still saying cannot load "recovery.img" i have tried several recovery downloads from different sources. as for file size of the img its 3,988kb sound right? i tried fastboot oem lock and unlock and everything worked fine. is there another recovery img i can try. maybe a stock recovery or somehting?
ok so i tried "fastboot flash recovery c:\program files (x86)\android\android-sdk\tools\recovery.img" exactly and still nothing i have the path modified in the system so i was under the assumption that i didnt have to write out the whole path in the command prompt.

tried that path and still got nothing. i re-booted my pc thinking that would help and now i cant find my device with fastboot devices. adb isnt recognized either now. i just cant catch a break. although i suppose its my fault. i really appreciate you going back and forth with me like this. with all the trouble i am having does trying odin make any sense? i searched a bit but there dosent seem to be alot of info on that either

Odin is last resort. If fastboot devices shows your phone you will be able to flash recovery. Reinstall phone drivers and get fastboot to work. Then get back to trying to flash recovery. I really think it is some small mistake. Did you exctract the zip of recovery and copy the .img file?
The error you were getting means the appropriate file was not found in the file path you specified, so its not a phone error.

got it. the first line in my command promt kept saying c:\users\dana>. i couldn't delete it so i ignored it and kept typing in the path after that but i guess it was always looking in users/dana and that wasn't where the img file was. i put the img file alone in the users/dana folder and it worked. i guess i am a bit slow to understanding the command prompt. thanks again for everyone's help and patience

[Q] Nexus S not working...

I'm going to probably get a lot of hate for this because there are a ton of forums that might get me here. I did search for about 3 hours tonight and discovered some things but am still confused. I hope someone can help this be more simple. So a friend has a Nexus S that isn't working (I have a Nexus S by the by too). It's unlocked but no ClockWork on it. I can press volume up and power to get to fastboot mode. When I click on "reboot," the phone will just loop on the Google logo. If I click recovery, it starts to boot then shows the triangle with the exclamation mark. From there, I can press power and up or down on volume to get the blue screen which says reboot system now, apply update, wipe, wipe. You get it. I'm stuck...I can also turn off the phone, hold volume up/down and plug in the usb to get to "downloading..."
I want to get this phone working and back to stock. I have the SDK Manager (my phone isn't rooted so I use it to take screenshots) and pda net (which I still don't understand why or how to use with this) and two versions of Odin. It seems like Odin can get this working but I can't get it to work or find a clear guide on how to use it and which ones to use. This is a Tmob Nexus S, I think the i9020. Any help would be so greatly appreciated and I will give you all the credit. Oh, and i can pull up the device on ddms with the sdk manager and can explore the files but there is nothing. I can't find a way to drag a file on the phone to "apply update from /sdcard." Sorry again and thanks again!

It seems your boot.img file either corrupted or missing.
Find a working copy of file, flash it via ADB interface or fastboot. Flash recovery file CWM. If that doesnt work, Try flashing CM7 Rom or someother ROM.
Did you check http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895545 ?
Odin should be your last resort, if nothing really works for you.
If you want to return to stock, simply flash the NAND backup found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884093 .

Thanks so much for the quick reply. I think I've made some headway...I can "see" the device with cmd by typing adb devices. After that though, I don't understand how to get the stock nexus s rom on the phone. How do I move that file to my phone (what's the line of code I type)? I've tried "adb install <c:\grh78> but it says the syntax isn't correct. Any more help is so greatly appreciated and I appreciate the already prompt response. Thanks!!!

Download your rom of choice (stock, custom)
Flash Cwm via fastboot if you haven't already
Boot into recovery.
Use adb push to push your zipped rom to the sdcard (adb push file.zip /sdcard/file.zip)
Use cwm to flash this zip.

Wow fast responses. I bet it's annoying to help yet another person having issues (again, phone was given to me like this but yeah...) while you guys or gals already know how to do these things very well. Here's where I'm stuck. I enter this code in cmd:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo.img
and it just says < waiting for device >.
Here's a pic of the screen that I'm on with my phone when i enter the command.
http://imgur.com/Pey3W
If I'm just in the first screen by holding volume up and power, the computer won't read the phone. So I click recovery, the screen shows it's trying to install something then the triangle exclamation mark, i press volume up/down with power and get this screen and the computer can "see" my phone on cmd.
How do I get this flipping clockwork on this phone or get the stock image on my sd card? Thanks again for helping me out guys. I have taken a look at the links you have sent me and that's where i found the download as well as the code to enter. I will keep looking at them but if you find a faster solution, please let me know.
One more thing to be super clear on...when I'm on the screen on the Nexus S that says Fastboot Mode on top in red and Lock State - Unlocked...my computer won't read the phone, therefore I cannot fastboot the recovery img...

So you already tried "fastboot devices" while in fastboot mode?
Edit: Actually it sounds you really want stock so download the complete stock OTA ROM (including boot.img etc.), rename it to update.zip and put it on the root of your sdcard. Boot into the stock recovery like you did already and hit apply update.
EDIT: Go here to download the correct OTA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056062
Find the correct 2.3.6 "Full ROM" for your phone model. Sounds like in those instructions you don't need to rename to update.zip. Haven't seen stock recovery for a while so I don't remember.
If there is a wipe option in the stock recovery then do that first.
Yes I have tried fastboot devices in fastboot mode but nothing because my computer doesn't read the phone in that mode. And yes, I want to put the stock rom on there but that's the key, I can't get access to the root of my sdcard. I can't push anything into the sdcard to flash it. Any ideas what to type or how to access the sdcard? Thanks a million, billion.
Also, I can't get the phone to boot at all, like I can't get passed the Google Logo if I reboot so I can't access the sdcard in the traditional way.

If fastboot devices returns NOTHING then this is most likely a driver issue. Remove the device through device manager, make sure you have a recent SDK (for the USB driver) and let it re-detect.

If you can get into the boot loader and get a proper USB driver you should be able to flash a recovery.
Once you've flashed Clockwork Mod (recovery) you'll be able to push to the sdcard using ADB or possibly mount the sd card through the CWM menu (although I've yet to have that work).
In order to get a recovery flashed though you need to get fastboot to see your device (unless you can already boot into recovery, then just use ADB).

If he's stuck at the Google logo and has a trash boot.img it's not likely he'll be able to get a shell via ADB. Now, if the system is hanging starting a device or looping during boot then that's possible.

Indeed - I saw no clockwork and figured he'd toasted his recovery image as well, but it does look like stock recovery is there. ADB should push fine to the sdcard from recovery then.
More...so if i type in adb reboot bootloader in the recovery screen, it does just that...great. But then my computer makes a noise, a double tap if you will...like a dun dun, like something didn't work. When you plug in something to the computer it usually goes like dun na...but the phone clearly won't read when I'm in bootloader/fastboot mode. So when I type a command, nothing will work...

That noise is that it detects a device has been connected (assuming a recent version of windows). If you want to flash CWM you need to get the driver sorted for the device. No amount of plugging/unplugging is going to fix it.
If you have the stock recovery you can boot into the stock recovery, use adb to push the full OTA package to the sd card and then just flash that from the stock recovery.

Go to the stock recovery like you have done before and type the adb command I wrote above.
Thanks is all I can say. Okay so when I type in the command, this is what I get:
- exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -
the "stock recovery" I can get into is the picture I posted a link for. That's what I can access as well as the fastboot mode when I first turn on the phone with volume up/power. But when my computer makes the noise that it's connected (using Windows 7 64bit) it makes a different sound then the normal "device connected." Like it's corrupted.
by the way...if we can get this working, I'll post a picture of me holding the fixed phone!

Ok! first download : http://www.4shared.com/zip/XG506hyV/icsroot-fastboot-recovey.html
just unpack, connect your device and click run.bat.....Good luck!
I ran the .bat, but I get an error saying "Device already rooted", but it is still not recognized as rooted by SuperUser.
Alternatively, is it possible to completely wipe the phone of everything (including root) so I can start over with a fresh phone?
Of course you can, and might be the best idea if you don't mind doing it.
Make sure you have the latest CWM recovery on your phone, download the FULL ROM from this thread (i'm not american so i don't know exactly, but from what i know yours is the I9020T, so get that ROM) and copy it to the SDCard. Now go into recovery, wipe system/data and dalvik cache, then flash the ROM.
Do make sure you have the right ROM though. This will get you 100% fresh and untouched 4.0.3. You can probably clear out any non-personal folders on the sdcard too, but that shouldn't do any harm anyway.
After this, use the attached file from this thread to root, and feel free to update root/superuser.
Actually, that's what I did...I can't use CWM recovery because its displaying an error of no root. So how do I wipe this or fix CWM?
Is your boot loader unlocked? And are you trying to flash cwm through fastboot?
Note to backup your sdcard if unlocking the bootloader.

My bootloader is apparently unlocked and I'm trying to flash through fastboot.
Are you sure the following is satisfied:
-open padlock and google logo on boot
-fastboot (on phone) says "bootloader status: unlocked" or something of the like
-you are using: "fastboot flash recovery "C:\path\to\recovery.img""
-you are using the above command while connected to the PC via USB (with working drivers) and that you are in fastboot mode on the phone (turn off phone --> hold Vol. Up then hold Power TOGETHER for about 2 seconds, should give you reboot and recovery options)
It is necessary to be in the bootloader/fastboot interface on the phone when you run the command. Hopefully it was something simple that i said above, otherwise i'm completely lost.
1. Yes
2. Yes
3. I didn't use that method to root...
4. I'll try that.
3 is just flashing recovery, that is the code u type into cmd/terminal to reflash the recovery img. It isn't rooting the phone. 4 is how to get into the mode on the phone to use the command.
Its a bit confusing at first but makes much more sense once you do it one or two times.
Where do I go to get the recovery image?
The latest ClockWorkMod Recovery can be found on this page. Just scroll down to Nexus S and download 5.0.2.0 crespo .img. Then just direct fastboot to the folder you have it saved in while using the "fastboot flash recovery C:\path\to\recovery.img" command.
Ok. I've tried this, but in command prompt, I get the following error:
C:\Users\Bruce>fastboot flash recovery C:\Users\Bruce\Downloads\recovery.img
'fastboot' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
Check out this rooting guide, however only go up to step 5 (and do NOT type "fastboot oem unlock", do everything up until that point). This will setup fastboot for you, and setup drivers for your computer. Once this is done, do what you did above and it should work successfully.
Remember to cd (change directory) in cmd to where you unzipped that folder.
There isn't a link...
Sorry, stuffed that up. I fixed the link in my previous post pointing to NexusSHacks - How to Root Nexus S.
It's worked, but when I try to go to the recovery menu, the Google/unlocked padlock screen freezes or it displays an Android with its chest compartment open and a red triangular ! symbol.
I just had a really long reply and managed to lose it by closing the page..
That's the stock bootloader you see there, it probably didnt flash or you rebooted your phone. And make sure that you are flashing the latest CWM you downloaded before.
I flashed the latest CWM, but when I try to go to recovery, my phone freezes at the Google logo with the unlocked padlock.
Have you tried flashing it again, or maybe redownloading the file? And of course making sure it is the NEXUS S version which you are downloading.
Alternatively, try just "fastboot boot recovery.img", replacing recovery.img with the full name and path of cwm.
edit: btw, i'll be gone for an hour or two Bruce so i can answer any more questions/issues when i get back

[Q] Nexus s 4g locked up

Okay, first of all I know, I'm a total noob. I have followed these forums a long time and have successfully rooted a few phones. One of which was my nexus s 4g. I was trying to unroot the phone so I could get ics. This is when I ran into problems and right now I just want to be able to get my phone working again. Right now I am stuck on the Miui boot up screen and no matter how long I wait it stays on that screen. If I do a battery pull and hold down power and vol up I can get into the bootloader screen with the information as follows: fastboot mode, product name-Herring, HW Version Rev 34, Bootloader version-D720SPAKE1, Baseband version-D720SPAKE1, Carrier info, SPR, serial number-37308B81276A00EC, Lock State-locked. Then the different options I can choose are reboot bootloader, reboot, recovery, power off. If I choose reboot, it takes me back to the mius screen and stays there. If I choose recovery, I get the triangle with the exclamation point. I then hold power and up volume again and I get a screen that says Android system recovery <3e> with reboot system now, apply update from sd card wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition. I have tried all of these as well with no luck. When I go to apply update from sd card I get matrix-cfs_v15.5 zip, root.zip, update.zip and then what looks like apps such as Alarms/, Android/,MIUI?, etc. If I try to select any of the first ones such as matrix-cfs_v15.5 zip, I get Install /sdcard... , finding update package..., opening update package..., verifying update package..., E.signature verification failed, Installation aborted. Then it gives me the system recovery options again. Any help would be appreciated.
Did you try ADB fastboot method?
Not sure how to try that
I tried doing the adb, followed all directions and installed and when I go to the command prompt and type in anything, such as, adb reboot bootloader I get, adb is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
ok I got that working now but when I type adb devices and press enter I get a message saying List of devices attached and then it doesn't show anything and I get the command prompt again saying:c:\android\android-sdk\platform-tools>
also since the phone is stuck in either the miui screen or bootloader I can't get into it to put it in usb debugging mode. I am trying on my own to get this going and am stuck any and all help would be very much appreciated.

I think that means you have a locked bootloader.
And from what you're telling, I believe you have stock recovery.
Also, when you're in fastboot mode, I don't think adb commands apply. Use fastboot commands instead (i.e. fastboot devices).
Search for guides showing you how to install and use fastboot.
I did fastboot as well and the problem I think I am having is it's not recognizing my phone because usb debugging wasn't turned on before it locked up. How would I get it to recognize my phone or download an img to my phone if it is not being recognized. Sorry if this is a stupid question.
You don't need usb debugging in fastboot mode.
You either:
1. Don't have drivers installed.
2. Don't have fastboot installed correctly.
You really need to read a guide or two, through and thoroughly.
Bc it sounds like you have no clues.
Yeah dude. Take a step back and go over what you have installed and where you installed it.Yes, fastboot commands start with fastboot instead of adb. And you're on stock recovery.
Thanks for the answer that I don't need usb debugging in fastboot mode, I wasn't sure of that. I have downloaded and installed my drivers multiple times and when I use the device manager to update drivers it says I have the latest drivers installed already. Whenever I do fastboot commands I will type in fastboot devices and shouldn't my device serial number come up? It just gives me the line c:\android\android-sdk\platform-tools>
And is waiting on me to type a command in. And yes I have been looking at guides all night. I appreciate any help you guys might have and remember we were all noobs at one time.
The zip in this tutorial should help.
It has adb, fastboot, and the drivers needed.
And unlock the bootloader because it is locked.
Finally got it, I had everything downloaded that I needed already, but looking at different forums, etc, it seemed like everyone named it something different. So I just used the one link you gave me and did it exactly the same way and it worked. Thanks so much! and again thanks for your patience.

[Q] Error on Installing TWRP and Can't recover to ICS, same Problem?

I have had my TF700 for a while, and merrily went from ICS through the various OTA upgrades to 4.2.1
I have attempted to follow along the "All in One Guide" in order to get Rooted so I can install Cyanogenmod or alternative to get rid of the crapware delivered by Asus. But I seem to get stuck when trying to "Flash" anything. Or at least I think so.
I unlocked the bootloader using the apk provided by Asus. Bootloader shows as unlocked when booting.
adb devices shows my device attached. When booted into fastboot mode fastboot devices shows my device attached.
I have also done a complete data wipe, not that that should matter.
1st, I have tried to install twrp using GooManager, and the fastboot method. Using GooManager, the file downloads and then nothing seems to happen. GooManager will also not reboot to recovery. Using the Fastboot method I get "error: cannot load 'twrp.blob': No error". I have downloaded the file multiple times and it does not appear to be corrupted.
I have tried to roll back to ICS by downloading the correct firmware, renaming it and copying to my SDCard, then booting into recovery. US_epad_user_9_4_5_30_20120907_UpdateLauncher.zip I only get the Android guy with the red triangle until it reboots.
I have also tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1929712 but this does nothing as twrp is not installed and the regular recovery doesn't do anything.
What should I try next? It would seem like I'm missing something obvious.
When you download firmware from Asus, the file you need to put on your SDCard is not the file you downloaded, but the zip file contained within. Its a zip in a zip. Extract the file you downloaded and you will find another zip file inside and that's the one you rename and copy to your SDCard. Also make sure your SDCard is formatted FAT32. exFAT will not work and is the default Sandisk format.
Got rolled back to ICS but..
I successfully rolled back to ICS .30
Now adb fails to recognize the device. Previously it did recognize. I reinstalled the drivers in fastboot mode and "normal" mode. I have tried the universal naked drivers and the Asus drivers. fastboot reboot will successfully reboot the device, but nothing shows up when I do a adb devices or fastboot devices.
fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash recovery twrp.blob Gets the same error, error: cannot load 'twrp.blob': No error.
When I run through *** Rooting Your TF700 with Debugfs automated root *** I get the error "You must install device specific drivers...."
Fixed

I discovered that I couldn't install twrp as I was in the wrong folder when executing the command. I needed to cd to the folder that contained the .blob file. Then it was trivial to use twrp to flash the root.zip file and gain root, and then flash cyanogenmod 10.0, wipe, and then reboot.
Everything is fine, now downloading Google apps.

When I read "seems like I'm missing something obvious" from your original post I went back and re-read it looking for the obvious. It wasn't immediately apparent what was wrong. If you hadn't posted the name of the firmware file it wouldn't have been obvious to me either but I thought I recognized it as the downloaded not the internal zip file name and verified it with my downloaded firmware. Glad to help and that you got it all worked out.
