Is the display screen for the Gtablet a hardware or software issue? - G Tablet General

I read in some blog that the g-tablet uses a netbook LCD screen, but I have saw netbook screens that looked better when viewing in an angle.

as many people have said on here it seems like a hardware issue but only because it almost seems as if they put the screen in upside down. if you turn the portrait mode upside down and have buttons in the bottom left the screen looks 10 times better.

LMFAO....I just turned the screen upside down and noticed how much better the viewing angle is...Now that I have the TnT lite rom installed this tab is so much better, but the viewing angle is horrendous. Well if this is true Viewsonic's manufacturing dept. are a bunch of tards. I wish there was something they can do on the software end to make it better, but after viewing the screen upside down it's more than likely a hardware issue.

I wonder if there is a contrast adjustment that can be accessed somewhere, it seems that it would be much better if we could just adjust the contrast...

some of my friends actually think that the screen is better the way they made it since its almost as if its like a privacy screen since people cant see what you are doing if you dont want them to see anything.

The stock screen isn't all that bad when it comes to landscape orientation. But due to different viewing angles on the vertical axis (15 degrees "up" and 30 degrees "down"), portrait mode is painful to use. In portrait mode, one eye sees a normal screen, but the other eye sees a washed out screen, which combined gives it a 3D look to it.

Video is bad but text is pretty good. I assume the manufacture thought it would be used for text more often?

Think you're right, They (viewsonic) making it in purpose.

G-Tablet hurting my vision?

I've owned a large range of devices, and I understand viewing angles, so I am hoping I have a bad LCD production run model.
When I hold the tablet in portrait everything seems... 3D? As in blurry, as if each eye is slightly off. It really messes me up for an hour. I know that many laptop screens are similar and I have been playing with them at different angles but I don't get that effect.
Anyone see that, or should I take it back for an exchange?

Yeah I know exactly what you are talking about. Its from the viewing angle issue. One eye sees the screen perfectly crisp and the other sees it with a slight blur, so it messes with your brain. Its even worse for me because one eye already sees blurry.

Kind of like in the movie The Jerk, when people's eyes go cross-eyed
The screen is upside down. Im unsure exactly why they designed it this way, but it is. I'm sure theres a good reason, just wish I knew what it was. If you find your eyes becoming fatigued, you can do a few things.
* Flip the Device upside down. Viewing angles are better, at least for washed out colors and tilted viewing.
* Move the device further back from your face. May not be possible, but that "two feet" rule exists for a reason. (or four feet depending on how rabid your companies ergonomic's "expert" is... I swear its a scam)
* Keep the device directly in front of your face, the center of the screen should be exactly where your nose is.
* Use it less? Hmm.. Thats why its last
Truth be told, this is a problem with all LCDs, from your desktop to phones, TVs, etc. Its just more appreant with a tablet as it sits close to your face. It sucks, but until OLED or eink become usable (in the way we want it to.. ie LCD quaility. Theyre both excellent for long time viewing, but lack speed, or the price is too high) we'll have to live with it.

It's also more apparent with tablets because we hold them at all sorts of angles while with nb & LCD monitors for desktops we pretty much set them to our tastes...
Anyways, I find that I can read text fine(portrait) in FBReader but many other apps I do note the portrait mode oddities, esp. the ones that force portrait mode. I've also used spare parts to turn off compat mode, which I've done on every tablet that I've used so far w/no problems.
Can the brightness on the G Tab be hacked/changed to be even less bright? Even at the lowest setting reading ebooks at night, I find it to be too bright.
I wanted to love the G-Tablet but the display issues finally became a deal killer for me. I have been struggling with the viewing angle problems and last night when I tried to read some comics I got that 3d effect mentioned by the OP.
I don't know if it's a bad batch of displays or if that's just the way they are made but I'm taking mine back to Sears for a refund. One would think that a company that specializes in video displays would have gotten this right.
My wife has an Ipad and it doesn't have ANY viewing angle problems, I guess it uses a different technology.

I can't read this thing with the "Day" mode (black on white background). I use Aldiko in Night Mode and then just turn down the brightness to my liking.
Some have mentioned that the 50 Mhz setting might be increasing the eye fatigue, which might have some validity.

My $.02 on viewing angles

yes, viewsonic (formerly one of the best monitor manufactures) should have put in a better display. yes, the viewing angle sucks, sorta ..
I mainly work in landscape mode.. When i have the tablet sitting on my lap at lets say probably +30 deg from perpendicular the screen looks, well gritty.. The pixels get a little funny to say the least.. However, this is when the volume buttons are at the top, if i spin the tablet around so the volume buttons are on the bottom, the grit goes away.. it still looks a little washed out, but not too bad .. Added bonus, i'm a lefty and now the menu buttons are near my left thumb.. double win..
All in all, this is what i consider a personal device, do i care that the person 6 feet away can't read my screen due to bad viewing angles, nope not at all..
justsayin
I agree. I think that if I want to show someone something on it, I would hand it to them to see, or point the darn thing at them.

This!
I understand the beancounters have to keep profitability up... but come on. I don't think I've ever had a bad Viewsonic monitor.
i remember back in the day, when 100lb CRTs made everyone drool, viewsonic owned the market.. They just can't compete now with sooo many other manufactures ..

The upside down screen saga.

After much reading here, it seems pretty clear (pardon the pun) that the G tab's screen has been installed upside down. Certainly I am one of the many who think that the screen is excellent when viewed upside down.
I thought I would summarise the solutions and suggestions I have read so far (in no particular order):
1. Install ADW which will let you rotate home screen (I don't know if this lets you rotate other stuff like videos)
2. Install CyanogenMod7 because it has ADW in it
3. Remove the screen, turn it around and put it back on (unfortunately, I read that the cable behind the screen is too short to allow this)
4. Somehow trick the G tab into orienting itself 180 degrees the other way (software?, hardware - rotate the sensors?)
Please feel free to add to these in this thread, just so we have the info all in one place.
I am a complete newbie with no software nor hardware experience, so I don't know how to even think about solving it, but it seems to me that the screen problem is currently the biggest issue with this device.
If there is anybody who can suggest a better solution for this, I'm sure there are many of us who would appreciate it very much.
I just realised that number 3 suggestion is silly! That would just mean that you have to hold the tab upside down and the angle would still be bad.
I think a way of "tricking" the tab might be best. Anyone?
I'm curious about the 'camps' people are in here:
1) The camp that believes that the viewing angles are better when the device is upside down suggesting some kind of manufacturing defect when the screen and polarization filters were installed - I am not in this camp, the screen is equally bad up or down for me
2) Those who feel due to the placement of the speakers and other ports, they'd prefer the screen orientated in the other direction
3) both
Is there another camp we should be aware of? Cast your vote, which camp do you belong in?
And I agree, lets try to consolidate just to this thread, too many 'screen orientation' threads going at the moment
I was hoping this thread could just be for suggestions on how to consistently view the screen upside down.
I don't think there is a good consistent way. YouTube (for example) and other apps will default to the standard orientation no matter if you use ADW to rotate your homescreen. I understand why you feel the way you do, but in my opinion they made the right choice for panel orientation. If you flipped the panel and then tried to dock the tablet the viewing angles would make it impossible to use unless you were looking at it from the bottom up. When I'm holding it in my lap I can always adjust the way I view it to compensate for the panel deficiencies. So long story short I think the panel orientation is correct even though it is not always ideal.

Thanks for your reply. I don't understand this part above?
The screen looks best to most of us when looking slightly downwards at it, so that would mean when it's in a dock the top of the tab would need to be tilted towards you to get the best angle.
When you dock it, does the top of the tab tilt towards you? I would have thought it sloped slightly away from the viewer at the top?

[Q] Screen Brightness Not Entirely Uniform?

If I look at an all-white screen at certain angles, I see a subtle effect where the top inch of the screen (in portrait mode) looks slightly darker/grayer than the rest of the screen with a sort of faint line dividing it. It's easiest to see it on the lowest brightness setting for me (which is what I use most of the time indoors).
Does anyone else have this issue? Or is it likely that my Charge's screen has a defect? It's something that I can live with, but still bothersome nonetheless.
An easy way to get a full white screen is to go into a browser and browse to about:blank
I don't see that at all, I think you've got a bad screen.
OK thanks, was pretty sure it couldn't be normal. Will probably actually go and exchange it now that I can't stop thinking about it.
i had this same issue with my infuse 4g!

Display viewing angle / hue shift

Received my pixel earlier this week.
Immediately after opening the box I was quite disappointed that the display noticeably shifts towards a blue hue even at the slightest change in angle other than straight on.
I have looked at a bunch of phones on display in stores since, some of which are showing similar symptoms to varying degree.
I understand that AMOLED displays are more susceptible to color shifts at different viewing angle but this seems very extreme.
Anybody else notice the same or bothered by it?
I notice it a little bit, but it doesn't bother me until at extreme angles. I figured it was just a characteristic of AMOLED displays, I see the same shift on my watch.

I have noticed the same on my device, 1/3 of the display at the bottom has a blue tint on light screens while holding it regularly, facing me. If I tilt the phone forward (not facing the eyes), it is better, but a very small angle change and that third of the screen is blue again. I have compared my device to another one and on the other device, it happens a lot less. Instead of just a third of the display it's the whole display that changes slightly color but in positions you wouldn't normally hold your phone. I am considering returning the device...
What have you done yourself? Do you think it is an issue?
Didn't notice until this post. That's probably because I had the same issue on the Nexus 6P. In fact, it ought to be better than this when Google are charging extortionate prices for this!

After 4 days of back and forth with play support they have finally agreed to exchange. I looked at a lot of other phones in stores and mine certainly seemed to be worse than most of them. Worth a try. Luck of AMOLED draw I guess.
AMOLED actually has the best viewing angles of ANY display, really. My 4K LG TV's look incredible from any way I look at them.
Pentile AMOLED as seen in today's phone screens is different and the cause of this issue. The color shift occurs because of the inconsistency in sub-pixel layout... RGBGR rather that straight RGB.

I have received a replacement phone and the new device hasn't got the problem as much , I guess the first device was slightly imperfect and I was noticing the amoled blue tint more coming from a LCD display before on my previous phone.
The viewing angles and hue shift on my lg v10 ips screen is worse..
It's the luck of the draw most manufacturers source hardware from different vendors resulting in slightly different variations. Ie the different ram used in pixels, making some slightly faster than others.
