Hello
A I travel a lot, and live in several countries in Europe, North America and Central America, I am desperatly looking for a smartphone with the following :
-Android at least 2.1
- All the basic : camera, GPS, Wifi, bluetooth
- GSM Quad Band
- and G3/3G+ with UMTS-WCDMA 850 AND 2100 MHz : thus last point is, for me the most difficult to find.
- unlocked
I have been searching for weeks know, I found the Acer Liquid Metal, but finally it seem it is only UMTS 900/2100 on expansy.com
I know that many Nokia like the X6 comply with all my requierments but are runing under Symbian 3. I do want Android for the Marked and all the free apps.
Does someone know that "perfect" phone for me ?
Thx for your help
Regards

Another option for you (no more head-ache): Using 2 phones!

Hey i will be buying one of these phones / pdas tom
either a mpx 300 with GSM 850 / GSM 1800 / GSM 1900
or xda 2s
or xda 2i
plz help which one should i buy - price is not a factor i just need something thts real good more like the best out of the 3
You do know that the XDA2i is 900 triband, right? (Just asking because you specified the 850 model of the MPX)
yup
Yeah i do know tht but well i m just confused about which cell to get formyself - i hav the option of getting any of these right now - comeon ppl ust a one word reply would do
I can't recommend the MPX -- it doesn't have enough memory (only 32MB, IIRC). If you don't plan on running lots of applications, that may be OK for you. If you do go for the MPX make sure you get one of the production units; as I understand it, the pre-production units can't be upgraded.
So that leaves the IIi or the IIs. If you're planning on using the phone in the US (especially on Cingular), go for the IIs; Cingular's network in many places uses the 850 MHz band, which the IIi doesn't have. I've had a SX66 (basically the IIs without the camera) for almost 4 months now and have been very happy with it.
I'm planning to find a way to flash the european 3g rom on a verizon 3g xoom (xoom has onboard a world chip that works on usa/europe/world frequencies) to let me use my 3g verizon xoom on italian carriers. I know, I know, may be a suicide solution (thanks ozzy ) but give me an european 3g rom and a couple of beers and I'll find a way
Anyone got already a 3g european xoom and want to share?
Thanks in advance
M.
No 3g euro xoommers out there ?
I am also in the same position, trying to Europeanize my Xoom
I live in GREECE (HSDPA 3G/GSM) and own a Verizon Xoom! (XOOM MZ600 ?)
according disassemble photos from ifixit & pdfdevices:
It uses the Qualcomm MDM6600, which is a dual-mode GSM/UMTS and CDMA2000-1xRTT/EVDO part capable of even doing HSDPA 14.4 on the downlink
I tried to find the datasheet for the chip, to see if different supporting electronics are required depending on the baseband but had not success. If one can verify this, it would be very helpful for our quest.
If same peripheral electronics are required, or Motorola implemented them both, a switch between MZ600/1/4 might be possible.
I am willing to try a euro flash by the way

Hi everybody
I bought an ACER Z3 (Z130) in France. Very nice and simple device. I like it and i use it for Internet & mail with my provider SOSH (Orange F) without problem.
On 14th october, i'll leave France to Canada for 1 year and i want to keep my cellphone.
I searched a Canadian cellphone provider in Edmonton, AB.
I found Roger, Telus, Bell .... Cellphone plans are very expensive in North America than Europe ! (~$CA 40 for 150min, 200Mb 0_o)
And ... I found "Mobilicity" and "Wind mobile" ! That's good ! Cheap and unlimited Internet plan without time engagement.
But, i read that you have to get an AWS-1 compatible devise.
My Z130 is worked on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz Band and UMTS 900/2100 MHz band.
Unfortunately, Devise have to work on UMTS 1700 and 2100Mhz to work on this type of network.
My question is : Is it possible to update my cellphone to work on this AWS band by a software ? An another ROM ? Or it's impossible due to hardware question ?
Thank you for any information you can give me.
Sincerely
Tyto~
NB: Sorry for my "basic" English ^^
Hello everyone,
I purchased a Blu WinHD in the US last week (my N820 broke down while I was abroad), but I was actually deceived at the store (even after explicitly asking) and I was given the W510 U variant, which supports only 850/1700/1900 MHz 3G networks (details pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=6802&view=1&c=blu_w510u_win_hd). Unfortunately, this means the device cannot connect to any Italian 3G provider, as most used bands are 900 and 2100 MHz.
However, I discovered another variant supporting those frequencies does exist (W510 L), and features the same phone controller:
pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=6801&view=1&c=blu_w510l_win_hd
<
Is there **any** way to make my variant work with those frequencies (firmware flashing, modding, etc..)? Otherwise this phone is now beatiful but useless to me...
Thanks in advance

Question:
Are the FDD-LTE bands universal?
Let's say a certain country lists their FDD-LTE bands as something like:
900/1800/2100
And the phone lists their bands as:
800/850/1700/1800/1900/2100
It should work because there is overlap right? As long as one frequency is the same, it should work?
This is such a basic question I should have been able to find it, but my searches were fruitless. (maybe because they are universal and my question is pointless?)
(I will ask questions about CDMA/GSM in another thread so as to uncomplicate the issue)
Background (you can skip reading this if you want):
My question arises for the simple reason that I travel pretty regularly between the US, Japan and sometimes other countries in Asia (and in February I'm going to Turkey) and I want to buy an unlocked phone that works pretty much anywhere. I am phone shopping and decided on the Asus Zenfone 2 ZE551ML 64GB (Amazon has a sale on this phone for under $300). It looks like it has all the 3G/4G bands for all the countries I want to visit. But Japan is.... weird when it comes to these sort of things (This is the country that invented DVD regions for Christssakes.). They always seem to do something to make their technology a little different to isolate their market (and rake in more cash). On the Asustek site it lists the LTE bands as:
2G :
EDGE/GSM :
850/900/1800/1900,
3G :W-CDMA 800(6)/850(5)/900(8)/1900(2) /2100(1)MHz
4G :
FDD-LTE: (JP version)
2100MHz(1)/1900MHz(2)/1800MHz(3)/1700/2100MHz(4)/850MHz(5)/800MHz(6)/900MHz(8)/1700MHz(9)/800MHz(18)/800MHz(19)/700MHz(28)
Notice how they put "(JP version)" in front of the frequency list? Does that mean the Japanese version of the phone? or do they have a "special" FDD-LTE network in Japan?
It is very important to me that the phone works in Japan as I spend most of my time here.
Thank you in advance, I have always received great responses to my questions here.
I think they mean the Japanese version of the phone. See if you can find specs of other regional versions of this phone (US, or EU).
The LTE band numbers are universal, FDD-LTE + a frequency is not necessarily universal.
Here's a list of the defined bands and technical parameters of each one:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-UTRA#Frequency_bands_and_channel_bandwidths
Here's a list of the LTE bands used in each country. Japan uses quite a lot bands: 1, 3/9, 11, 8, 21, 26/18/19/5, 28.
