how to connect my phone to laptop via wifi to surf internet?

hi greetings to all. I am new in this foum. I have bought a new smartphone and it brought me to this forum for support.
I have htc s710 with wm 6. Is is possible to access internet on the phone by connecting it to the laptop through wi-fi in adhoc mode? I tried connecting it, and connection was established, I was as well able to ping the phone from my laptop but i was unable to use internet. I want to use laptop as a wireless router.
in the laptop i have ethernet connection which brings internet to my home, and i have enabled ics in that. the wi-fi card has been assignd ip address 192.168.0.1, and mobile has ip assigned 192.168.0.2.
is it possible in this way?
If your notebook has a bluetooth module built in, establish a BT ActiveSync connection and your S710 will then use the computer's internet access automatically.
i dont hava BT in my laptop. I just have a external orinoco gold wi-fi card.
is it possible through that.
I've never tested it cause I use a WAP router. ICS worked crappy when I tried it.
Did you try using DHCP instead of setting a fixed IP on your S710? ICS offers DHCP services and IIRC depends on it. Also remember that you normally can't set a DNS server on WinMo. Does ICS offer its services on all network cards or don't you have to activate the card you want ICS to serve on in its settings?
Thanks for the response. I have not tried DHCP, let me see today if it works that way.
Hi, I searched this concern before cause I wanted to use wifi too in the office. I'm not sure where the thread that I read had been sucessfull but it did gave me the idea to set mine and get it working.
Basically I have LAN connection in the office, connected to my Dell Latitdue d600 and created ad hoc connection to my HTC Touch.
I opened network connections, and right click my lan connection, advance tab, and enable internet sharing using wireless connection, thats the only thing i did, after establishing the adhoc connection, IP address in Pc is the same, 192.168.0.1 and subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 hope you get it working. I dont have a smartphone to test it myself
Hi piper. my problem is fixed now. i connected the phone to the laptop at adhoc mode, applied static ip. then ran network setup wizard. after the setup was complete i changed the ip setings of the phone. i set the phone to acquire ip form dhcp server.

Well I have tried that on my windows xp machine. However, when you enable ICS then I think it will provide ip to connected devices via DHCP. I just enabled phone to acquire ip via DCHP by going to the phones, Connection manager -- > Settings --> WLAN Settings --> Connection status ---> Menu --> IP Address --> And select Use server - assigned IP address.
Step, first enable ICS in your laptop -- > apply ip address to your phone like 192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0 and then connect your phone to your laptop in adhoc mode. Once the connection is established go to phone and change the ip address settings as given above ie. select server assigned ip address. i USED THIS MODE AS THERE WAS NO OPTION TO APPLY DNS IN THE PHONE.

Another wifi problem.

Hi everyboy, I have an Blue Angel with WM6.5.3 from sun_dream. I can't connect to my home wifi or any wifi. I configured my router like this:
DHCP off
Wirless all
WPA-PSK
TKIP
64bit
I can't connect even to open wifi accespoints(hotspots).
I start the wirelss manager, tap on wirelss on and after that the wireless network appears. I click connect and nothing happens. In the network manager the connectios is available, i click connect, it says connecting and than again it says available.(any hot sopt or the home network, for that at home i entered the mac into the router and have written the ip an dns to the phone wirelss card)
Pleas help, it is a great phone i like it but this is the only problem i have.
PS: I even commanded an bluetooth gps unit. Is there any way to change the hardware and install an "g" wireless card?
Shouldn't DHCP on your WiFi router be set to 'On' and also for the phone as well. It will select an IP address for your device, which will then pick it up.
Otherwise you will have to allocate an IP address on the router, and then set the phone to the same address. If they don't match it won't work
It's a lot easier to let DHCP do all the donkey work. In most public areas DHCP is used as it is a 'Start it and forget it' system.
I set dhcp off because i assign an ip adress to every pc manualy and even have an mac filter where again the ip is written. I set the same ip on the phone as i had written it in the router config.
I can't acces even public wireless spots. I have the problem that it says the connection is available and then it says connecting and instead of connected it says avaialble.

Like i said i am able to connect but nothing else. Any ideas?

[Q] Unable to tether after Ad-Hoc fix

I am unfortunately unable to post a reply within the original thread with this fix as it is in the Development forum. So here it is..
I have applied the wpa_supplicant fix from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033314
I can now see Ad-hoc networks but when trying to connect to it I am stuck at Obtaining IP Address.
Connecting to Infrastructure networks works fine. Other devices can connect to my Ad-Hoc network. But the Xoom will not obtain an IP Address.
I have tried setting static IP and using open DNS options such as Google's DNS servers but that doesn't work either.
I am using a canadian wi-fi only xoom. I have updated to the most recent US Xoom, Wi-Fi only firmware from Motorola and used this method for the root and unlock:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010568
I am trying to tether to a Samsung i5700 that is rooted using WiFi Tether or Barnacle. Both do the same thing.
I've also tried bluetooth tethering but the two devices will pair but not connect.
Mine does that too where it will hang on Obtaining IP address just make sure your phone is on meaning the screen is on (showing wifi tether.) For some reason it can run but not connect very well while the screen is off. Don't know why this is, but it's been only a minor inconvenience.
Even with the phone screen on, showing the wifi tether screen it doesn't connect. And when I assign a static IP address Wifi Tether never notifies that a client has connected.

[Q] Can a tethered PC see other PCs on the network?

My laptop does not have a wifi module yet, so I am using my cyanogenmod wildfire with tethering to access my home network. But it can't see any PC on it. I can ping the IP addresses but DNS does not work.
What I have noticed is that it is the phone which has the IP from my router and the laptop has an IP in another range. My network uses 10.0.0.x and the laptop has a 192.168.x.x.
My guess is that since the IP range is not the same windows restricts it from seeing the other PCs but it's just a guess. I have tried to set the IP manually but then it got no connection.
Is it impossible to use tether to access network PCs?
Bumping anyone?
