Just a heads up for anyone not impressed with the stock mms app(I wasn't)...I installed mms.apk from cm6 with root explorer without any problems..looks much better imo. Just move it to system/app,delete the old apk,and odex,set permission 644,reboot,profit!
I have been using MMS.apk from CM 6 beta for Vibrant and it works great too. I hate threaded/buble SMS interface, it wastes half of the screen space for stupid bubbles which only make it look ridiculous.
Yeah it really looks ridiculous. Just a stupid copy of the iPhone app...

Like vanilla/stock android,'cept more options...black background,back to all threads,etc...
Ive recently converted to using handcent, has heaps of options for how you want to display the "threads", also mms just attaches like a email and shows up in the msg

I'm pretty happy right now using the leaked 2.2 froyo, with Touchwiz + Launcherpro + Beautiful Widgets, etc. However, one thing i really don't like is the bubble theme in messaging. Is there any way to change it to the vanilla Android messaging theme? (For some reason my friends' Epic 4G has it in that format instead of the Bubble theme, and she didn't change it.)
I don't really want to use a complete SMS replacement app since I didn't like Handcent much.

You can just replace it with the vanilla (or a variant) Mms.apk.
Oh, thanks, I don't know why I didn't think of that... anywhere I would be able to get that file easily? or just download a vanilla android ROM and extract it?
Download cognition Aosp , look in framework and steal the mms.apk .
Use root manager set to R/W
Remember to backup the orignial in system/app before you swap it. Not sure if you have to delete mms odex but hey, give it a try.
hmm okay thanks for the advice, i'll just run a nandroid backup and then start experiment. i expect the stock mms.apk will break the touchwiz puzzle piece screen, too bad.
I've been using aosp mms for the last couple of days and I mostly like it but it doesn't read my contact in the conversation thread and it doesn't seem to size right inside the messaging thread. So I'm hoping someone has a flashable zip of the original HTC sense mms apk ? I'm running freshes latest Rom if that matters .
just adb push the Mms.apk to system/app

I'm not sure if that'll work since it's tied to Rosie. However, I do recommend Handcent SMS. It has iPhone-style bubbles and other themes and has a quick reply popup that will come up in any app you're in. I too found the stock Messaging app lacking but this made it much better.
If you do decide to use this app, be sure to turn off notifications in the stock app or you'll get two notifications for each message you get.

Thanks for the advice. I used handcent for a long time on my g1 and it was alright except for a few bugs . I may consider it in the end

There are plenty of themes for the messaging widget, making it more transparent or changing the colors of the buttons to access it, but the inside of the app itself is still white and uninteresting.
So, can someone please theme one? Or, if it's been done, send me to where I can find a themed stock messaging app? Maybe a black background and green text? or hell a black background and many options as to the color of the text. Just something that isn't that drab white. It doesn't go with any rom I've flashed.

1. The widget is full screen, transparent and simple. Hancent you consistently have to click on the little picture, then menu, then "all threads"...it's annoying. Also, in most themed sense roms, the widget is themed but not the app itself. So in myn's rom, everything is dark and transparent...but when you open the app, it's boring and white. It's like you're only trying to make the home screens look better and nothing else. Also, you can't theme the widgets from chomp or handcent, so unless your theme happens to look like their widgets, it looks out of place and you're boned anyway.
2. Handcent and Chomp have ads. Ads are annoying and make the product look cheap. I even paid for chompsms ads to go away and they came back. I left a strongly worded e-mail...and review...and i tell people not to get it.
3. the stock app is faster and takes up less space than the 3rd party ones and can't be uninstalled. You HAVE to have it, so why can't someone spend some time and make an app you HAVE to have look a little better?
4. Gmail, menus, the drawer launcher, the drawer itself and various other stock programs are themed all the way through, why not the messaging app too?
I would ask for the stock sense mail app too but I don't use it enough to really care. The messaging app I use 200 times a day minimum.

I love the look of the stock messaaging app in CM6 and would like to have the same thing on a sense rom. Im sure its possible some how.

I've always wanted this also. I didn't think it was possible since no one has a themed mms.apk in their rom, so I never posted about it. I did use the cm6 version of AOSP but for some reason mms never worked. Hopefully some of the great developers on xda can get this done for us.

1) With LauncherPro plus you can have a messaging widget that displays messages from what ever messaging program you use. Its great, I love it!
2) I've never tried ChompSMS because I love Handcent and I've never once seen an advertisement except for an ad for one of their own services within the settings menu. Such a tiny infraction is something I cannot fault them for given how long I've been using their otherwise ad free app.
3) You're right on this one but its really not a concern. On my old MyTouch 3G, I worried about it, absolutely. However, given that Froyo offers the ability to install apps to the SDcard there is absolutely no reason to worry about space. Its just silly. Its akin to being worried about fitting a six pack of beer in a Suburban.
4) No clue, so I'm not going to address it.
i was just curious to see if anyone would post there original sms apps so i can try them out on my phone i have an optimus v i know most wont work but just wanna try if anyone is willing to share ! just post you messanger app i think in most they are mms.apk but not to sure ...

ive treid handsent and i do currently use go sms pro they are great i just like to try
other mms/sms app for other devices (stock) just to mess w/ and i liked the stock sms app for a lil bit until i saw it as just bland white and annoying and no style to it but poit it i just want to try other stock sms/mms apps !

I have tried Go SMS too, but the flood of colors, blingage isnt what I want...but I do like the folder structure it has. All I am looking for is an sms app that displays sms msgs in folders and I can move a message from Inbox to a Save folder. Also if I can see msgs I deleted in a Delete folder, giving me an oportunity to move any to a different folder, respond or simply clear the delete folder.......

I love my Infuse but the only thing is I absolutely HATE TouchWiz. I love HTC's Sense but unfortunately AFAIK there isn't a way of getting that on here.
Anyways back to my main point, what is the easiest way to get rid of TouchWiz and Samsung's Dialer, E-Mail Client and SMS Client? I much prefer the stock Android version of everything so if someone could please point me in the right direction that would be great.
My phone IS rooted BTW incase that makes things easier

CM 7 is in the process of being ported to the infuse, check the development section - still doesn't have all bugs worked out yet, but that's your only alternative to TouchWiz

Until CM7 is available you could change the launcher and use market apps to do SMS, Email, etc...
Just delete/move or freeze the APKs using a root-enabled file explorer or Titanium Backup. Then you can install some alternative apps, lockscreens, and launchers.
Alternatively, you might want to check out some of the ROMs in the dev section. You can easily get a close-to-AOSP feel with Infused v2 and the lockscreen addon.
Yeah I'm always watching the CM7 thread to see what's new, etc.
Am I able to get the AOSP APK's for the dialer, sms and e-mail from somewhere? I would change my launcher but without the AOSP APK's I don't see the point
I am currently on Infused V2 with the lockscreen addon, just want to get rid of the Samsung feel ;-)

the dialer and contacts would be difficult to permanantly change. way back designgears tried an aosp look rom for the captivate and he wasn't able to change the dialer. you can get go contacts/dialer which is a single app much like aosp with added features and is themeable.
you can change the sms to aosp I believe but I'm not sure why you'd want to, it is really limited. there are many market apps you can use. go sms pro and handcent are very popular.
and there are many launcher in the market for you to choose. the gingerbread one from Eugene373 is same as gtg puts in his roms I believe.
I guess I will just wait until CM7 is all ready
I like simplicity, I think the Samsung SMS, E-mail and dialer are way too bloated. I look at it this way, if the main used functions of my phone are simple and basic then I won't have too many problems with the phone with daily use.

well it sounds like you might like go dialer/contacts then, it has some additional features but isn't very complicated at all. only issue is that every time it gets upgraded the defaults get cleared and you need to set them back to go contacts for like 4-5 different scenarios. it is a good app but the defaults system on android can get annoying. and I do believe aosp sms will work on this phone, just haven't seen it tried. it was done many times on the sgs phones because earlier versions of tw sms had weird problems with the time stamps, especially on custom roms, that and the theme was pretty gross.
Well I know SMS is possible for sure because I was using Refuse 1.7 before I upgraded to Infuse and it has the AOSP SMS which was nice
Hopefully CM7 gets finished up sooner than later
