[Q] New OTA Update? - Captivate General

Today my gf (who is running Axura 2.4) received the following text message on her Captivate:
AT&T FREE MSG: AT&T is providing a free update for your phone. When asked to install the update, please select OK. Thank You.
Has anyone else gotten this? Are they about to roll out a new OTA?

Replacing Phone...

My apolgies guys, I've searched and tried to piece together the results I've found for an answer, but piecing together the results have left me confused and a bit worried in sending back. For some reason, I've lost data connectivity. I called T-Mobile and was supprised by the fact that they are sending me a new phone(I'll take it as I've been dissapointed by the build of my G1 being one of the few people waiting in line for the first series to come out.). So, my thoughts are, I have jesusfreke's latest update with root on my phone, and I would like to revert back to T-Mobile standard build before sending my phone back. Is there any links/help someone can provide to revert back to T-Mobile build? I know I'm going to get hit with the "search forum" responses, but I can't find one that lays it out in a straight forward mannor. I appreciate any constructive help anyone can provide.
Thank you in advance..

Rooting a new g1

T-mo just replaced my original g1. It arrived w/ the original 1.1 firmware. T-mo tech support says that they cannot update it as the OTAs have gone out. They strongly hinted that I should root my phone and actually directed me to some forums. As a 'rooting virgin' can someone direct me to a location to where I can download a simple rooting app. and get back to 1.6. I forgot how primitive the original G1 was. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First off, that sounds like complete bull from the T-Mobile tech support, as I've had my G1 recently replaced, and the OTA update was pushed to my phone within 24 hours. So, if all you want is to get back to Donut, I suggest waiting a couple days. But, if you do not get an OTA, read on.
It's not as easy as just installing a simple rooting app. Although, it is fairly easy. There are several how-to guides in the Dream forum. Check them out. Also, if you're more of a visual person, you can visit The-Unlockr.com, as they have videos for rooting and installing ROMs onto several Android devices.

Hope I helped.

Fiktipn,
Thank you for the quick reply. At the time of my post I only had my g1 connected for about 12 hours. During the night I received the update. I wish the tech support has told me that, it would have saved me a great deal of aggravation. I particularly appreciated the 'if you're a visual person' diplomatic reference to my being a tech neebie. That's very, very clever. Thanks again.
Hey, no problem. Welcome to XDA, stick around and you can definitely learn some stuff.

ICS Update?

So, curious... has anyone who claims finding that golden ticket in the Wonka bar of the new leaked ICS update passed that update file along to someone who can actually pick it apart to see if these are legit, or are we dealing with a bunch of trolls here?
*Mod, feel free to move this if needed. Thanks.

Look here:

Several of my dev counterparts and I have looked this one over extensively. It is legit, but so far ONLY for the Chinese release, and Middle East Aisia phones. There is still no sign of the US AT&T or any other international versions yet.

Yes, there are legitimate leaks of ICS for ME865 and non-AT&T MB865. See these threads:

Pretty much everyone here who's a dev or wants to be one at some point are taking a look at these.
So, are these updates being found via Cheesecake or do the lucky ducks in China (or wherever) not divulge where they stumbled upon it?
Also, I've been checking Cheesecake for a couple of weeks now, but occasionally I'll get a "Connection Failed" window that wants me to select from three different choices... is that right or am I not doing something right?
Thanks in advance for your responses.

Most likely being leaked from Cheesecake, unless they know someone who works inside at Motorola.
As for the connection failed window, whenever I get that window I simply restart my phone and the message will not show up again for a while. That message shows up I believe if you overload their servers by trying to connect too many times in a given time period.

Okay, good to know .I'll try a reboot next time I see that window pop up. Glad to know I'm not going about this wrong -don't want to lessen my already slim-to-none chance at getting the ICS update! lol
Please post in the correct forum. Development forum is not meant to make random inquiries. If you didn't make it it does not merit a new forum in development section. Also this has been asked before so please search before making a new thread. /moved to General.
Cheers

Please DON'T install any of these pre-release updates!
They really are not meant for "normal" use.
You are best to wait for one of us devs to create a stable ROM out of these updates for everyone to flash. Either that or wait about 2 more weeks and Motorola will release the real deal through the proper OTA channels. When we had the 2.3.6 leaks, it was about 2-3 weeks before the "Official" OTA came out.
If you flash this it has the potential to lock your phone down even more than it already is, that or make a brick out of it.
If you find an update the best thing to do is to upload it someplace like say dropbox... then post a post in the General section with the link to it, asking us devs to look it over.
If you don't have a dropbox space, see my signature, it is 100% free for 2.5GB of space, and if you refer people you get more free space.

"Connection Failed" just means that that server is down.. choose "Skip setup", switch servers and try again... no need to reboot.

My apologies prbassplayer, I thought that maybe this was out of step for this part of the forum -wasn't entirely sure. Noted and understood.

Gotcha, Jim. I have a dropbox account, but don't figure I'd be lucky enough to score the first ICS update for US and/or AT&T. At any rate, I'll keep on truckin' along just to help out...

You never know. I just hope that we hit these servers so much that we keep them pretty unusable, and MOTO gets so annoyed that they speed it up and get the stable version out faster.

Where do these servers come from, are they official Moto servers?

We can only hope! What differences will 4.0 have over our now 2.3.6 -why is this so sought after? (N00B question)
EDIT: Other than that which I have seen around the forum, being that the UI is different among other (seemingly indifferent) differences... at least to my untrained brain.

Soak test is back on WTF....

I got this email from Motorola today.....
Hi.
Thanks for signing up for the Atrix 2 software test. Our apologies for the delay in starting this test! The software will begin to be pushed out later this afternoon; however, it may take several hours for all targeted devices to receive the update.
We're eager to hear your feedback. Please share your experience on the private community provided, and via the survey I will send out after you've had some time to work with the software.
To ensure we hear you, please follow these guidelines:
•Please post all your feedback in our private community (link below). This also where you'll find help during the soak.
•Please do not call or contact Motorola, AT&T or your carrier support for help during the soak. Those teams are not yet ready to support this software.
•I'm not able to check private messages on the forums during soaks, so if you need immediate help that's not a good route to take. Post in the community instead.
•If you have any problems accessing the private community, please click here for help.
•Please do not post questions publicly, on our site or elsewhere.
Please start your visit to the private community here. You'll find additional important information in the Welcome message as soon as you sign in. (Note that you will not be able to post in the public communities during the soak test.)
Thanks so much for your participation! We really appreciate your time and insights.

I saw this in another thread. Once again, we're advising to download the leak but DO NOT install it. Extract it from your cache folder and upload it to give to one of the devs via PM.
DO NOT post it on the forums or in a thread.
Oh and waiting? Can you please edit your post so the gentleman's name from Motorola is not posted?
Thanks.

Does - "View release notes" actually give you anything useful?
67.21.125
nothing interested.
How long do we have to wait before we start blaming Motorola's sad update schedule on Google? Have we reached that threshold? They are, after all, the ones who laid off a bunch of Motorola staffers (potentially those working on the Atrix 2's update). I'll stop, because there's already been enough baseless conjecture around this, but at this point I think it comes down to Google.

I blame all the Indian ICS Atrix2 users for posting so many questions. It probably scared the Motorola company lurkers until they got quiet again.
But seriously, like you said, enough is enough. Mods please delete any new posts that try to start that stupid, tired argumentative thread again.

lol, kinda feels like you should have ended your statement with the ubiquitous "I'm just saying...". Seriously, I'm just glad we're getting an official build...
I am a soaker and my update fails, I removed root, TB, Cheesecake, and bootstrap verified all were removed and settings changed back what would be causing it to fail? I did also change my boot animation

You likely have removed some bloat or touched a file it checks. Your best bet it to copy the update to your SD card and FXZ to stock, update to 2.3.6, and apply ICS soak. As has been stated MANY times, once you are on this version of ICS you can't FXZ back. Good luck!

Just fyi, you can also check /cache/recovery/last_log.txt to see why it failed... but yea, once you go on this soak build, there's most likely no going back.

Samsung Captivate

Hi everyone, Just joined the site. I may only be here briefly to ask a question, Im going on a trip and need to take an unlocked phone with me and pic up a Sim when i arrive there. So i happen to have this old Samsung Captivate and wish to unlock it, i search the thread and it now seems to be closed. Rather than pay a guy down the street to unlock it i thought i could try myself. Is there any chance someone can send me the link to the little program to get the unlocker code off my phone? i watched a fella on you tube and got me to this site. seems pretty cool, never heard of a site that might help people before without chucking CC #'s out.
[email protected] is my email. Also this phone is so old should i fine a firmware update for it........its like 6 years at least its been in the cubord! anyhow thanks in advance if anyone can point me in the right direction........Cheers All

On Google Play search:
Galaxy S Unlock (Helroz)
I used that program and worked perfectly.
You are lucky it is still available on Google Play.
