The next time you get a text from ATT saying update available - Captivate General

Take the time to install it and confirm that it is in fact Froyo before posting the 100th thread proclaiming the official froyo rolling out now.

What is this Froyo thing that you speak of ???

I doubt even having this as a sticky would prevent people from posting "I just got an AT&T Update alert!!" posts.

Id also like to note that if you are on anything other than jh7 and you receive a text message, At&t just wants to get you to jh7 for a good install. Most people post please do sticky this so we can avoid newb threads

att keeps trying to force update on mine and im not running jh7, postphone 3 times then it goes to install or cant x it out o notification bar, try install it fails and then reboots phone and back to normal

Rooting and ROM upgrade question

Noob question: If I root my stock AT&T Captivate, will I need to un-root to upgrade to the final Froyo ROM when it is released?
Thanks...
You should be able to update just fine if you are rooted. I was rooted and had no problem updating OTA ATTs last update. That being said, consider the cognition ROM if you want to get the best system with the least amount of work.
Is it possible to disable OTA updates from ATT if you have a custom ROM and don't want to risk getting things screwed up?

The OTA isnt automatic. It will notify you if there is an update, but not automatically install it for you
rooting is simply just adding files to your system. No stock files are deleted. You should be able to OTA just fine while rooted and nothing else.

I call bs, there were way too many threads about the problems rooted users had updating.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I had no problems doing the ota while I was rooted, lag fixed and partial bloatware removed. However on my new captivate the ota failed so I updated using kies mini and it was like I did a factory reset and I had to do a factory reset because my ext system was there but one click root didn't recognize its and said I didn't have enough space for fix.after reset I had no problems.

Obviously you didn't read enough. I posted in half of em a well as others like the guy above this post who had no problems. Might wanna lower the bs flag. Lots of people have problems, most don't. Just cause one guy posted his doesn't mean the other 99 have the same issue.
If you mess with the rom, you will have issues with any phone with any ota update.

This is the Captivate forum. Please post to the proper forum and always do a search before starting a new thread. The user you responded to probably does not have that phone anymore, but you'd be better off sending him a PM rather than posting to the wrong forum.

Hi I am trying to help my friends with a phone that they are going to buy. I only know that it is a Nokia E71. I need to know if they can root it or jailbreak it. I need to know which one. Can they tether with it? Thank you. I had to Google the question and it took me here. Hopefully I can find my way back to this part of the forum!
GSM phones
I don't know if there are any GSM phones listed on this site. I entered in the Nokia E71 info in the "find your device..." box in the top right hand corner on the screen but nothing came up. I was wondering if anyone knows if the phone can be rooted or jailbreaked and if it can be used for tethering. I don't know if GSM phones from Walmart's Straight talk plan are hackable. If you would let me know it would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou.

How to downgrade to 2.1 and install newest firmware (Captivate)

Take the following steps to downgrade to 2.1 and download the newest firmware for the Samsung Captivate.
1. Master Reset
2. Revert to Stock 2.1 (using odin oneclick)
3. Download MINI Kies from samsung's website
4. reboot phone
5. plug in captivate
viola! took me awhile to figure it out but i got it... testing the ground for when the official 2.2 comes out.
2.2 was laggy for me... while the features are great I hate when things do not work correctly. Let me know if this worked for you.
Jh7? Our is there a newer one
Yay no more fc
still JH7 but no more lag!
How exactly do I revert back to Stock 2.1? Where do I even get it?

Samsung official FROYO firmware release

No more having to hackup custom froyo ROM's from the I9000.
I'm downloading Keys mini to get my hands on the firmware. Is anyone using this as a base for a custom ROM?

Unbelievable! Doesn't anyone bother to even look at the thread titles before posting? Zelendel, do that thing that you do so well.
I am aware of Cognition 4 and Torch but I did not see them mention that they are using the latest firmware as base.
Also, how did they build a ROM on the new firmware 2 days ago (when cognition 4 came out) when the firmware was only released today? I never even saw a leak for the newest samsung firmware.
I wish there is a 'No Thank You' button that decrement the Thank You points to negative.

i'm sure this isn't everything in the package.
That is the update that was rolled out on 07/08. The main point of this update was to fix the random reboot issue that plagued a large number of Thunderbolt owners. There were some other minor improvements, such as the option to turn off 4G. Enjoy this update, as the next one (Gingerbread) is still a mystery as to when it will come.

Its the MR2 update. When I first got it I thought it was gingerbread.... only to have my hopes squashed...

[Q] 2.3.3 to 2.2?

I'm a bit confused. I've been reading online for a while, and don't fully understand the ROMs available and what not. (I am a computer programmer, so I'm fairly tech savvy).
Basically, my evo shift has 2.3.3. I did a factory reset hoping it would back down to 2.2, but it did not. Now, I'd like to install 2.2 so I can root my phone. Is there a way I can do this? I've also seen a few roms (ie: evervolv) that are rooted. How can I install these (i'm using a mac).
Also, what do you guys recommend? Should I install a ROM, downgrade to 2.2 (how?) and root, etc?
Thanks!
You cannot downgrade to Froyo.. Sorry. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218580

You can only temp root right now with 2.3 on the Shift. A factory reset just wipes everything and basically gives you a clean OS...it's like getting a new phone. The good folks at HTC should be releasing the the source code and kernel between now and EOL of the phone.

When ppl aren't sure what they are reading they have to ask. It may seem stupid to ppl who aren't new but to someone new, I can see it happening, especially if they don't want to brick their phone!
just my 1.5 cents worth
Yeah, I've read lots. I posted because it's good to have clarification.
I've read that you cannot "downgrade" to 2.2 from 2.3, but that doesn't necessarily answer my question if I can flash a 2.2 ROM..
I know 2.3.3 isn't rooted yet, but that doesn't necessarily mean I can't flash a ROM with an older, rooted version (very common in modchips for gaming systems.. If the company releases an update, you can usually re-flash the chip to the old update and be good to go).
So, it seems that if my phone is 2.3, my *ONLY* option is to temp root, is that correct (impossible to reflash, reprogram, etc)?

You need root and recovery (or the old hboot) in order to flash anything. So yes, until a new root method is found your only option is to temp root.
